Forest fragmentation is a continuing global concern. Human development destroys forest habitat, which separates and isolates forest fragments, decreases animal movement between fragments, reduces animal abundance and alters community composition. Forests are also becoming increasingly fragmented by linear forest clearings, such as roads, which are widespread throughout forests in tropical, temperate and boreal forest biomes. Various criteria are discussed and as algorithms for obtaining optimal designs for use in linear regression. Linear regression is used widely and effectively in forestry but the method of quantifying the linear relationship in terms of selecting observations or designing an experiment to obtain observations is often inefficient. Under relatively mild assumptions on the structure of the random variables present in the problem, the value function at every time stage is shown to be jointly convex in the history of the process, namely the random variables observed so far as well as the decisions taken up to that point. The species constituents exhibit life history characteristics significantly different from fynbos species, in that reproductive biology and recruitment are not coupled to fire.
