This study reports forest structure, regeneration and the soil properties from unlogged and logged forest in the Bulungan Research Forest, Malinau District, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Four sites were compared by using four 1-ha replicate plots in each of primary forest (PF), 5, 10 and 30-yr old logged forest (LF-5, LF-10, LF- 30). Forest canopy changes have subsequent impacts on sub-canopy snow processes. A simple, process-based point energy balance model was developed to quantify differences in energy balance characteristics between a burned and a healthy forest stand. I studied wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) movements and range use in response to roads and vehicular road use on the George Washington National Forest, Virginia. Radio-equipped wild turkeys used areas within 150 m of state roads less than expected and areas > 450m from ail roads greater than expected. Riparian areas connect terrestrial and aquatic environments. The objectives of this research were to compare the vegetation community composition and structure eight years after harvesting and to explore successional trends among buffer widths at year eight after disturbance and in a chronosequence. A series of small clearcuts were harvested in 1998 in a 70 year old second growth stand at the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest and 0m, 10m and 30m reserve zones were established adjacent to the streams. <p>The Miombo forest is represented in seven countries in the subtropical area of Africa and is an example of ecosystem adapted to the disturbance of anthropogenic fire. The forest yields a number of different ecosystem goods and services including fuelwood, honey and soil protection. Fire has found a worldwide acceptance during the last decade due to deeper understanding of their role in the ecosystem.
