Abstract:
Canton Neuchâtel comprises 29 000 ha of forests from which 170 000 m3 of wood are harvested each year. Forest vegetation forms a particularly varied mosaic with a predominance of beech cum fir forests. The origins of forest legislation in this canton lie in Prince Berthier's decree of 1807. Silvicultural practice is based above all on the positive experience accumulated by the employment of a selection system. In addition to the three functions of the forest stipulated in federal law, the judicial system in Canton Neuchâtel has a fourth: that of maintaining biodiversity. Foresters share with the population and the authorities an awareness and appreciation of the forest that is encapsulated in the slogan: «Neuchâtel's forests: cultural heritage, prime resource, emotions».

Abstract:
Forest health is an important aspect of sustainable forest management. The practical significance of health assessments of forest ecosystems is becoming more and more prominent because good knowledge about the health level of forests and the causes of unhealthy forests enables the identification of proper actions for enhancing sustainable development of forest ecosystems. This paper evaluated the health status of the forest ecosystem of Mount Taishan using the spatial analysis technique of GIS (Geographic Information System) and local forest inventory data. A comprehensive indicator system that reflects the health status of forestsin the study areawas established. Based on this indicator system, the health level of each sub-compartment of the forests in the study area was assessed. The results show that the high-quality grade forest (80.4 ha) and healthy grade forest (2671 ha) accounted for only 23.5% of the total forest area of Mount Taishan. About 60.5% of Mount Taishan forest was in a sub-health status. The area of unhealthy forests was 1865 ha (accounting for 16% of the total forest area), of which about 98 ha was inextremely unhealthy conditions.Asmore than two-thirds of the forests in Mount Taishan are in a sub-health or unhealthy state, effective measures for improving forest health are in urgent need in the study area.

Abstract:
The present study deals with structure, diversity and regeneration of Sal (ShorearobustaGaertn.) forests in Kumaun region of Central Himalaya. Twoforest types were investigated i.e. Sal dominant forestandSal teak (Tectonagrandis Linn.) mixed forestin KumaunHimalaya.Tree, sapling and seedling density was 650- 911, 36-1303 and 400-6656 ind.ha-1, respectively. Salshowed reverse J-shaped curve representing good regeneration and T. grandisshowed reverse bell shaped indicating fair regeneration in community management system while Sal showed poor regeneration in the government management forest. Sal showed comparatively good regeneration in Sal mixed forest in community managed while poor regeneration in Sal dominantgovernment management system. Over exploitation Sal species for basic needs of people consequentlyimpart the negative impact on regeneration of forest. Thus it is suggested that mixed forests with higher number of species reduces the pressure on individual ones species as can be brought by local people so should be managed and conserved sustainably.

Abstract:
A multiresource forest inventory can be defined as a coherent group of methods used to collect the information required for integrated forest management. It represents a management tool that can provide a common data base to evaluate simultaneously wood production, wildlife habitat quality and sensitive ecological variables. The objective of this study was to develop a multiresource inventory adapted to the needs of wood and wildlife habitat supply analysis in Quebec's public forests. Special attention was given to identifying the additional variables needed in the present forest inventory to adequately evaluate wildlife habitat quality. Most of the critical habitat variables used in Habitat Suitability Indices Models for a large number of species are already integrated in Quebec's forest inventory. However, two critical habitat variables should be added : the shrub layer and snags. The former plays a major ecological role for the survival of most not hibernating herbivores such as snowshoe hare and moose. These species are major game species and the staple prey of many furbearers. The low shrub layer provides both browse and escape cover. Large diameter snags are a limiting factor of many species for nesting. Moreover, those two components are vulnerable to an intensification of forestry practices. In certain situations other variables could be added, notably vegetation physionomy and coarse wood debris.

Abstract:
Abstract. This paper investigates the endurance of a national forest management programme in Burkina Faso called Chantier d'Aménagement Forestier (CAF), which focuses on the participatory sustainable production of fuelwood and is widely supported by international donors despite evidence of its shortcomings. We analyse the surprising persistence of the CAF model as a case of the territorialisation of state power through the reproduction of “political forests” – drawing on the work of Peluso and Vandergeest (2001, 2011). Analysing some the shortcomings and incoherencies of the model, we bring to light the role of non-state actors in the reproduction of the CAF as a “political forest”. We show that informal regulatory arrangements have emerged between state and non-state actors, namely merchants and customary authorities, over the production of fuelwood. We call these arrangements “fuelwood territorialities” because they have contributed to keeping the CAF's resource model unquestioned. With fuelwood territorialities, we draw attention to the role of non-state actors in the reproduction of “political forests”, that is, the process of state territorialisation through forest governance. This analysis helps clarify how certain areas, such as the CAFs, keep being officially represented as “forest” even though they are dominated by a patchwork of fields, fallows, and savannahs and do not have the ecological characteristics of one.

Abstract:
Palavras Chave: Sensoriamento remoto, análise temporal, usos e cobertura dos solos, Campos de Cima da Serra Temporal Analysis of Use and Land Cover in the Municipality of São José dos Ausentes, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil ABSTRACTThis research presents the collection of data on changes in land use and land cover in the region called Campos de Cima da Serra, northeast of Rio Grande do Sul state, in order to identify the plant formations more impacted over the last twenty years. LANDSAT5 satellite images were used for the years 1985 and 2009 and digital processing techniques were performed resulting in NDVI imaging, color composite and change image, supervised classification, and generation of use and land cover maps of the region. The data collected show the decrease of 24.42% in native forest class, between the years 1985 and 2009. In foresting class there was expansion of approximately 514% compared to 1985. There is a decrease of 4.93% in the area of grasslands in relation to the year of 1985, however it is important to stress that the extension in the area of grasslands, for the year 2009, may be less due to spectral confusion related to the development stage of pinus s.p. over the fields. Changes in land use and cover over the past twenty-four years in the municipality of São José dos Ausentes indicate the strategies maintenance of rural properties facing the economic constraints and the stewardship with introduction of new uses of soil. Agricultural crops of potatoes and planting exotic forests (Pinus s. p) in native grassland linked to traditional activities associated to extensive livestock farming, is a proprietary strategy contributing to changing the landscape of Campos de Cima da Serra. Keywords: remote sensing, land use e land cover, Campos de Cima da Serra

Abstract:
In Canada, there are still extensive tracts of boreal forest consisting of stands that have resulted from natural disturbances. The country's forests are a mosaic made up to a large extent of old-growth forest that is beyond commercial harvesting age, especially in the boreal forest of eastern Canada. As areas of boreal forest under management steadily expand, as demand for forest products continues to grow and as rotation periods become shorter in response to silvicultural practices, the forest cover will inevitably become younger, causing changes to the structure and composition of the mosaic of forest stands that will affect the aspect of entire landscapes. These changes may have an adverse impact on biological diversity. Forest birds are one group of living organisms that may respond quickly to the advent of younger forest landscapes, thereby acting as a biological indicator. In this paper, we discuss some of the problems that birds face as a result of the truncation of the age-class distribution of managed forest landscapes in eastern Canada's coniferous boreal forest, using data obtained from our research in the Clay Belt region of Quebec and Ontario. More specifically, we look at how birds respond to changes in forest structure and composition in terms of time since natural disturbances, and to variation in dead trees availability. We then consider the impact of the prospective rejuvenation of the forest cover in managed forest landscapes, and possible solutions aimed at mitigating that impact through new management strategies based on the maintenance of forest ecosystem diversity. The ability of these new management strategies to maintain the ecological integrity of bird communities provides an indication of their potential as tools for contributing to the maintenance of biological diversity in a broader sense. Abstract:
The Ivorian forest is facing advanced degradation. To preserve it, Côte d’Ivoire has drafted Law No. 65 - 425 dated 20 december 1965 on the Forest Code and its implementing regulations. But first legal instrument of protection was not as effective as expected. Indeed, sectoral scope , forest law can govern the entire forest area. Other sectoral legalization as the 1965 Law on hunting, the Water Code, the 1998 Law on rural land law will step in to fill the legislative gap in the forestry code. The result is a law on the forest and its uncoordinated and non-integrated resources, the consequences are obvious risks of overlapping jurisdiction, sources of conflict and blocking and duplication. To ensure appropriate legal framework for the protection of the Ivorian forest, this legal integration must take into account all socio-political and economic dimensions of forests, ensuring the participation of all stakeholders, allow the integration of text content and require a cooperation of management structures

Abstract:
A new approach to modelling the interaction between droplets and the carrier phase is suggested. The new model isapplied to the analysis of a spray injected into a chamber of quiescent air, using an Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. The conservative formulation of the equations for mass, momentum and energy transport is used for the analysis of the carrier phase. The dispersed phase is modelled using the Lagrangian approach with droplets represented by individual parcels. The implementation of the Discontinuous Galerkin method (ForestDG), based on a topological representation of the computational mesh by a hierarchical structure consisting of oct- quad- and binary trees, is used in our analysis. Adaptive mesh refinement (h-refinement) enables us to increase the spatial resolution for the computational mesh in the vicinity of the points of interest such as interfaces, geometrical features, or flow discontinuities. The local increase in the expansion order (p-refinement) at areas of high strain rates or vorticity magnitude results in an increase of the order of the accuracy of discretisation of shear layers and vortices. The initial domain consists of a graph of unitarian-trees representing hexahedral, prismatic and tetrahedral elements. The ancestral elements of the mesh can be split into self-similar elements allowing each tree to grow branches to an arbitrary level of refinement. The connectivity of the elements, their genealogy and their partitioning are described by linked lists of pointers. These are attached to the tree data structure which facilitates the on-the-fly splitting, merging and repartitioning of the computational mesh by rearranging the links of each node of the tree. This enables us to refine the computational mesh in the vicinity of the droplet parcels aiming to accurately resolve the coupling betweenthe two phases.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/ILASS2017.2017.4671
