Lightning is a powerful and potentially destructive force of nature; failure to include appropriate measures in the design and construction of buildings can have severe consequences. The electrical and physical forces released during a lightning strike can result in serious damage to structures, electrical infrastructure and the sensitive electronic components used in computers, media devices and electronic systems that have become crucial to the modern existence. Developments in electronics technology have resulted in the increased proliferation of PV systems and devices that incorporate

Abstract:
Reliability requirements of wind turbines become more important as the share of wind energy in the global energy balance continues to grow. Lightning protection of wind turbines has therefore become an issue of great importance considering the location and size of modern wind turbines. Analysis of lightning performance of wind turbines includes both lightning exposure and lightning response once a turbine is actually struck. In Chapter 1, lightning exposure and protection of wind turbines is introduced from a technical and field point of view, and common methods of analysis are mentioned.

Lightning is the strongest natural electromagnetic radiation source, emitting electromagnetic energy in the frequency range from ~4 Hz to ~300 MHz or more. The location of lightning is calculated based on the received electromagnetic waves. The received electromagnetic waves, or lightning sferics, propagate from the lightning radiation source to the receiver along the ground path and reflections by the ionosphere named sky waves. Particularly for a long-baseline (>400 km) lightning receiver array, the received electromagnetic waves are usually a mixture of the ground wave and sky waves, which

Abstract:
In the design of most of the modern systems, lightning threat needs to be considered at the design phase itself. This demands a suitable model and owing to associated complexity, only simplified modeling have been attempted. As a consequence, it does not provide adequate insight into the phenomena. Considering these, a more realistic time-¬ domain electromagnetic model for the return stroke current evolution has been developed by incorporating the following underlying physical processes: (i) excitation formed by the electric field due to charge distribution along the channel, cloud and that in

Abstract:
This project had as main goal to improve the perception of male surfers about the surf brand Lightning Bolt. It was proposed the creation of a collection of wetsuits as well as the “A Pure Source” Project to show the commitment of the brand with the surf community. To promote both several promotional activities are suggested such as the use of magazines, radio, banners and social media. To complement the distribution chain of the brand, a concept store and a mobile store are also recommended. With this project the brand will be able to double the number of current surfers that buy the brand i

Hanuta, Irene. "A lightning climatology for Manitoba using cloud-to-ground strike data from a lightning detection network." 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/7183.

Abstract:
While thunderstorm data have been traditionally collected at first order weather stations, this thesis uses lightning detector data with a higher spatial and temporal resolution as a source of thunderstorm information. Cloud-to-ground lightning strike data for Manitoba during 1985 have been analyzed for spatial variability and diurnal/seasonal distribution. Almost 68 000 strikes were detected over a four month period with July recording the most activity. Three areas of the province had the greatest concentration of lightning strikes, indicating some influence by topography and position of lar

碩士
國立臺灣科技大學
電機工程系
94
Abstract Lightning surge could causes short-circuit faults for power systems, which in turn may bring power distribution systems to sudden interruption. Lightning would even damage some power equipments and influence the quality of power supply. Choosing the lightning arresters which meet necessary requirements and installing them in proper locations could make the most out of the protection. The main purpose of this thesis is to discuss applying lightning arresters to lightning surge overvoltage protection for distribution power systems.
