This essay examines the structural relationship between the folktale and the gothic novel with focus on characterization. This study will present a clearer definition of the now problematized gothic genre and show how newer genres are influenced by the older ones. This examination is done by doing a close-reading of Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto, which is generally known as the first gothic novel, and comparing it to formalist Vladimir Propp’s findings on the functions of the Russian folktale. The argument of the thesis is that the literary forms of Thomas Merton's prose writings embody theological claims he makes elsewhere at the level of content. Specifically, the five chapters of the thesis show that Merton not only writes about the themes of self-denial, simplification, observing the 'thereness' of the world, and (in two distinct ways) apprehending God in darkness and obscurity, but that he also enacts those themes in the way he writes prose. I argue that a contemplative strain of aesthetic theory, indebted to the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer, informed a version of modernism propagated by Bloomsbury before the First World War. This creative practice-led research examines how Vladimir Propp’s formalist structural analysis of Russian fairy tales may be applied to the writing of revisionist cinematic adaptations where the traditional literary villain is transformed into an anti-hero. We derive results in the ergodic theory of symbolic dynamical systems. Our first result concerns β-expansions of real numbers.
