Abstract:
Formulas exist in various kinds of documents with different formats. Extracting and normalizing them into a unique form are the precondition of mathematical retrieval. In this paper, an extraction and conversion method of formulas in Word documents is built for mathematical expression retrieval. Firstly, the mathematical expressions in Word documents are detected through the processing of OLE objects. Then, the matching rules of formula format conversion are defined. Finally, the extracted mathematical expressions in OMML format are converted into LaTeX format follow the defined rules and stored in a txt file. Furthermore, the formulas exist in MathType format are stored in bitmap documents and converted into LaTeX documents through formula recognition and reconstruction module. Experiments show the effectiveness of the designed approach.

Abstract:
Despite the importance of sparse matrices in numerous fields of science, software implementations remain difficult to use for non-expert users, generally requiring the understanding of the underlying details of the chosen sparse matrix storage format. In addition, to achieve good performance, several formats may need to be used in one program, requiring explicit selection and conversion between the formats. This can be both tedious and error-prone, especially for non-expert users. Motivated by these issues, we present a user-friendly and open-source sparse matrix class for the C++ language, with a high-level application programming interface deliberately similar to the widely-used MATLAB language. This facilitates prototyping directly in C++ and aids the conversion of research code into production environments. The class internally uses two main approaches to achieve efficient execution: (i) a hybrid storage framework, which automatically and seamlessly switches between three underlying storage formats (compressed sparse column, red-black tree, coordinate list) depending on which format is best suited and/or available for specific operations, and (ii) a template-based meta-programming framework to automatically detect and optimise the execution of common expression patterns. Empirical evaluations on large sparse matrices with various densities of non-zero elements demonstrate the advantages of the hybrid storage framework and the expression optimisation mechanism.

Abstract:
Abstract. Does the naming of clocks always require conceptual preparation? To examine this question, speakers were presented with analog and digital clocks that had to be named in Dutch using either a relative (e.g., “quarter to four”) or an absolute (e.g., “three forty-five”) clock time expression format. Naming latencies showed evidence of conceptual preparation when speakers produced relative time expressions to analog and digital clocks, but not when they used absolute time expressions. These findings indicate that conceptual mediation is not always mandatory for telling time, but instead depends on clock time expression format, supporting a multiple-route account of Dutch clock time naming.

Kariv, Ilona, Hong Cao, Phillip D. Marvil, et al. "Identification of Inhibitors of Bacterial Transcription/Translation Machinery Utilizing a Miniaturized 1536-Well Format Screen." Journal of Biomolecular Screening 6, no. 4 (2001): 233–43. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/108705710100600405.

Abstract:
This report presents the miniaturization of a HTS screen to identify inhibitors of prokaryotic transcription-translation in a 1536-well format. The in vitro assay design utilized the bacterial expression machinery to drive expression of a firefly luciferase reporter gene, which was read as an endpoint luminesence measurement. This multicomponent system permits identification of inhibitors at different steps in this pathway. Successful miniaturization required integration of homogeneous assay formats, robust liquid-handling workstations, and second-generation imaging systems. Comparison of data from a triplicate 1536-well screen of a subset of a target library that had been previously validated and followed up for hit confirmation in a 384-well plate format confirmed that triplicate screening yields data of higher confidence and quality, eliminates the time-consuming and potentially error-prone step of cherry-picking, and reduces the number of false positives and negatives. The substantial savings of reagents and reduction of the numbers of plates to process obtained in a 1536-well format as compared to a 384-well format allowed a full triplicate evaluation of the entire library of 183,000 compounds at lower cost and in less time. The triplicate-screen statistics are consistent with a highly reliable data set with a coefficient of variation of 14.8% and Z' and Z values of 0.57 and 0.25, respectively. This screen resulted in the identification of 1,149 hits (0.63% hit rate), representing a compound population at 2.5 standard deviations from the mean cutoff. Furthermore, the data demonstrate good agreement between IC50 values derived for this assay in a 1536-well format and 384-well format.
