Abstract Potassium formate aqueous solutions have been considered as heat transfer fluids or coolants for electronics cooling applications. Electrochemical corrosion tests were performed on high purity silicon specimens in 42% potassium formate solutions between 298 K and 348 K, with a magnetic stirring rate of 400 RPM. Open circuit potentials were recorded, and corrosion rates were calculated from Tafel scan curves tested at a scan rate of 0.4 mV/s, and the influence of temperature was assessed. Abstract This paper describes the corrosion of carbon steel equipment by an MDEA solution at about 260°F. The corrosion correlated well with the levels of carboxylic acids present, specifically formates and acetates. Plugging of filters and the amine contactors was a major operating problem. Improvements included installation of austenitic and duplex stainless steel equipment, water washing of the sour gas before contact with the amine, periodic caustic additions, and use of an antioxidant chemical.
