Childhood is a normalising phase of life. Each individual’s subjective experience becomes the baseline for establishing a worldview and evaluating differences encountered in others. Yet scholars of childhood have demonstrated that formative years are often informed by political, cultural, and social trends. During the Cold War, citizen and identity formation at the hands of state and media influences was particularly strident. This chapter provides a practical application of childhood studies scholarship to undergraduate education in the context of a semester-long project assigned in an undergraduate history course at a Western university. Oral history projects that connect textbook narratives with the memories of living family and community members help to dismantle the East-West divide, generate empathy, and promote self-reflection of the students as agents of their own historical moment.

Abstract:
AbstractHuman trust can be construed as a heuristic wager on the predictability and benevolence of others, within a compatible worldview. A leap of faith across gaps in information. Generally, we posit that trust constitutes a functional bridge between individual and group homeostasis, by helping minimize energy consumed in continuously monitoring the behavior of others and verifying their assertions, thus reducing group complexity and facilitating coordination. Indeed, we argue that trust is crucial to the formation and maintenance of collective entities. However, the wager that trust represents in the face of uncertainty leaves the possibility of misallocated trust, which can result in maladaptive outcomes for both individuals and groups. More specifically, trust can be thought of as a scale-invariant property of minimizing prediction error within ascending levels of social hierarchy ranging from individual brains to dyads, groups and societies, and ultimately civilizations. This framework permits us to examine trust from multiple perspectives at once, relating homeostasis, subjective affect and predictive processing/active inference at the individual level, with complexity and homeostasis at the collective level. We propose trust as a paradigmatic instance of an intrinsically dialectical phenomenon bridging individual and collective levels of organization, one that can be observed in daily experience and empirically studied in the real world. Here, we suggest collective psychophysiology as a promising paradigm for studying the multiscale dynamics of trust. We conclude with discussing how our integrative approach could help shine light on not only the bright but also the dark sides of trust.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter is written into a situation conceived of as the era of the Anthropocene, expressing the new position of the human species in earth history with an irreversible and massive impact on earth’s planetary systems. In the notion of the Anthropocene I include the conception of humankind as many and not one, acknowledging the interconnectedness with other forms of life. A premise in the following is that the current sustainability challenges involving climate crisis, ecological crisis and global injustice, prompt a rethinking of pedagogy and education. If so, how may religious and worldview education be reconsidered? I examine three accounts of religious and worldview education – Andrew Wright’s critical religious education, Robert Jackson’s interpretive approach, and Wanda Alberts’ didactics of the study of religions. I particularly identify their conceptions of the purpose of religious and worldview education, exploring how they accommodate the ecological, existential, and political contexts. While these approaches pay limited attention to the crises in the Anthropocene, by primarily situating and reflecting on religious and worldview education in increasingly plural societies, they contribute to social sustainability. Furthermore, in their attention to the search for truth and student situatedness, a recognition of a global element, an formative dimension of education accommodating a critical, reflexive element they provide possible spaces and entry points for rethinking of an integrative religious and worldview education in the Anthropocene.

Abstract:
AbstractFollowing the collapse of the Communist system in the early 1990s, past decades have witnessed the re-institution of the Russian Orthodox Church in Russia and the Polish Catholic Church in Poland. As a crucial part of these developments, both churches have significantly increased their presence throughout several areas of public life and established ever-closer relations to their respective states and political establishments. This paper applies Jose Casanova’s conception of public religion to frame how these tendencies are perceived and experienced by the present young adult generation in Poland and Russia. The analysis of the Russian and Polish young adults’ views on the present-day role of religion in the wider society and public life reveal several concerns about the current church-state relations in both countries. Without necessarily taking a negative stance towards religion or religious traditions as such, respondents mostly expressed their views on the public role of religion in society through three interrelated main discourses: a discourse of differentiation, a discourse of diversity and plurality, and a discourse of tradition and modernity. In general, narratives are built upon the prevalent discursive formations on individual rights and freedoms as the natural and taken-for-granted states of affairs in modern democratic societies.
