Abstract:
We investigate the resolved star formation properties of a sample of 45 massive galaxies (M* > 1011 M⊙) within a redshift range of 1.5 ⩽ z ⩽ 3 detected in the GOODS NICMOS Survey (Conselice et al. 2011), a HST H160-band imaging program. We derive the star formation rate as a function of radius using rest frame UV data from deep z850 ACS imaging. The star formation present at high redshift is then extrapolated to z = 0, and we examine the stellar mass produced in individual regions within each galaxy. We also construct new stellar mass profiles of the in situ stellar mass at high redshift fr

Major horizons in radar reflection profiles may correlate with contacts between stratigraphic units or with structural breaks such as fault surfaces. Minor reflections may be caused by clutter or, in some cases, may indicate material properties or structure within stratigraphic units. In this study, we examine the physical basis for major and minor reflections observed in a shallow, unconfined, fluvial aquifer near Boise, Idaho, U. S. A. We compare a 2D profile from a surface ground-penetrating-radar reflection transect with the 1D modeled reflection profiles at three wells adjacent to the sur

The formation time scale of axisymmetric vortex rings is studied numerically for relatively long discharge times. Experimental findings on the existence and universality of a formation time scale, referred to as the ‘formation number’, are confirmed. The formation number is indicative of the time at which a vortex ring acquires its maximal circulation. For vortex rings generated by impulsive motion of a piston, the formation number was found to be approximately four, in very good agreement with experimental results. Although gold nitride has been produced by Siller and co-workers by irradiating a gold film with low energy nitrogen ions, the unsuccessful reason for previous attempts to produce gold nitride is not clear yet. In general, nitrogen concentration depth profile probably influences gold nitride formation. But it is difficult to measure nitrogen concentration depth profile in the N-implanted layer at a low implantation energy of 500 eV. Ion concentration depth profiles in amorphous solids can be determined rather accurately in the case of low implantation fluences using TRIM code. The sputtering e

Heartwood is the dead, inner layers of wood in the tree which no longer transport water. It is usually dark in colour and has increased decay-resistance compared to the sapwood. Heartwood forms in the transition zone when the ray cells die and deposit chemical extractives in the surrounding xylem. These chemicals convey natural durability which is of value to the forest and timber industry. Despite its value the formation of heartwood is poorly understood.
