We investigate the resolved star formation properties of a sample of 45 massive galaxies (M* > 1011 M⊙) within a redshift range of 1.5 ⩽ z ⩽ 3 detected in the GOODS NICMOS Survey (Conselice et al. 2011), a HST H160-band imaging program. We derive the star formation rate as a function of radius using rest frame UV data from deep z850 ACS imaging. The star formation present at high redshift is then extrapolated to z = 0, and we examine the stellar mass produced in individual regions within each galaxy. We also construct new stellar mass profiles of the in situ stellar mass at high redshift fr

The formation time scale of axisymmetric vortex rings is studied numerically for relatively long discharge times. Experimental findings on the existence and universality of a formation time scale, referred to as the ‘formation number’, are confirmed. For vortex rings generated by impulsive motion of a piston, the formation number was found to be approximately four, in very good agreement with experimental results. Semi-analytic models have suggested that scale lengths in dark matter halos may be determined by the onset of the radial orbit instability. Abstract:
Hard turning, i.e., turning hardened steels, may produce the unique “hook” shaped residual stress (RS) profile characterized by surface compressive RS and subsurface maximum compressive RS. However, the formation mechanism of the unique RS profile is not yet known. In this study, a novel hybrid finite element modeling approach based on thermal-mechanical coupling and internal state variable plasticity model has been developed to predict the unique RS profile patterns by hard turning AISI 52100 steel (62 HRc). The most important controlling factor for the unique characteristics of residual stre
