Novos formatos de loja surgem constantemente. Estimulados por diferentes aspectos de seu ambiente de negócios, os varejistas estão sempre inovando em seus formatos para atrair mais consumidores, atender melhor seu público, para superar a concorrência ou ainda aproveitar vantagens decorrentes do avanço da tecnologia. A estratégia traçada pelo varejista está diretamente relacionada com o formato da loja. Este formato, por sua vez, é resultado da oferta do composto mercadológico – características básicas deste varejista utilizadas para satisfazer as necessidades dos consumidores. A diversidade de formatos e de estratégias dos varejistas de confecção é grande. Apesar desta variedade, não foi encontrada na literatura uma classificação única, consensual e amplamente aceita, nem uma descrição destes formatos. Devido ao grande potencial do mercado de baixa renda aliado à importância econômica do varejo de vestuário, este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar como as empresas varejistas de confecção estão organizadas em relação ao seu formato, isto é, em relação às variáveis do seu composto mercadológico (produto, preço, apresentação, pessoal, promoção e localização). Assim, este trabalho pretende derivar empiricamente uma taxonomia dos formatos varejistas com base no composto mercadológico das lojas por meio de uma análise de agrupamentos. Os resultados apontam para a existência de quatro grupos atuando no segmento de confecção para baixa renda: Amadoras, Barateiras, Especializadas e Consolidadas. As principais características dos grupos são detalhadas neste trabalho. São apresentadas também as diferenças e semelhanças entre eles. Os grupos aparentam estágios distintos no seu desenvolvimento estratégico. De maneira especulativa é possível identificar um caminho evolutivo entre estes grupos de lojas.
New retail formats emerge constantly. Driven by different factors of their business environment, retailers are always evolving their formats to keep and attract costumers, to overcome the competitors or to benefit from the technology development. The strategy outlined by the retailer is directly related to the store format. This format, in turn, is the result of the retail mix offering – the retailer basic characteristics that are established to satisfy the consumers' needs. There are many different formats in the apparel retail segment. Despite that, it was not found in the literature one single, accepted and consensual classification for these formats. Given the great potential of the low income segment and the economic importance of the apparel retail business, the objective of this research is to investigate how apparel retailers develop their formats and organize their retail marketing mix (product, price, presentation, people, promotion and placement). This investigation is focused on a taxonomic analysis of retail formats based on the stores' retail mix, using a cluster analysis. The results indicate four store groups in the low income apparel retail segment: Non Professional, Cheap, Specialty and Professional. The main characteristics of the groups are detailed in this study. It is also presented the differences and similarities among the groups. These groups are apparently in different stages of strategic development. Speculations are raised about the way these groups of retail formats evolve.

This paper aims to explore the advance of the diffusion of the financial logic on the national clothing retail in the promotion of consumer credit in Brazil. In this sense, it looks to verify how this advance is configured in a new organizational arrangement that is signed by the formation of partnerships between the financial institutions and the retail companies, as well as to analyze the administrative strategy to manage this new model, in view of its Social and labor implications. We analyzed eight companies in the national retail clothing sector that have a strong expression in consumption in Brazil, from 2008 to 2016. The companies of this sampling are Marisa, Renner, Riachuelo, Pernambucanas, Cia. Hering, Arezzo & Co, Restoque Commerce and Garment Apparel and Grazziotin Group, which previously had the commercial object of trading merchandise and today deal with consolidated variables in the financial Market. In this work, it is analyzed how the mergers and acquisitions movements involving financial institutions and retail companies are shaping the domestic market, and also how organizational models are managed after the adoption of partnerships with financial institutions and which Impacts of the expansion of this model on labor relations. The results obtained point to a better understanding of the need to adapt to the process, which requires a gradual change in the current organizational structure and consequent prevention of damages related to labor issues, values added to shareholders or positions of CEOs, obliged to increase a series of variables that result in change in the segment. These factors exemplify the materialization of financialization strategies among the largest national apparel retailers, and also show how the banking process is affecting the profile of the commercial model of the national retail sector.
Este trabalho tem como objetivo explorar o avanço da difusão da lógica financeira sobre o varejo nacional de vestuário no fomento de crédito para o consumo no Brasil. Nesse sentido, busca-se verificar como esse avanço se configura em um novo arranjo organizacional que se firma pela formação de parcerias entre as instituições financeiras e as empresas de varejo, bem como analisar a estratégia administrativa para gerir esse novo modelo, tendo em vista suas implicações sociais e trabalhistas. Foram analisadas oito empresas do setor varejista nacional de vestuário que desempenham forte expressão no consumo no Brasil, ¬¬¬¬de 2008 a 2016. As empresas da amostra são as lojas Marisa, Renner, Riachuelo, Pernambucanas, Cia. Hering, Arezzo&Co, Restoque Comércio e Confecções de Roupas e Grupo Grazziotin, que antes tinha como objeto social a comercialização de mercadorias e hoje lidam com variáveis consolidadas no mercado financeiro. Neste trabalho, é analisado como os movimentos de fusões e aquisições que envolvem instituições financeiras e empresas varejistas estão modelando o mercado nacional e, ainda, como os modelos organizacionais passam a ser gerenciados após a adoção de parcerias com as instituições financeiras e quais os impactos da expansão desse modelo nas relações de trabalho. Os resultados obtidos apontam para uma melhor compreensão da necessidade de adequação ao processo, o que exige mudança gradativa na estrutura organizacional vigente e consequente prevenção dos danos relacionados a questões trabalhistas, a valores agregados aos acionistas ou às posições de CEOs, obrigados a incrementar uma série de variáveis que resultam em mudança no segmento. Esses fatores exemplificam a materialização de estratégias de financeirização junto aos maiores varejistas nacionais de vestuário, e ainda, demonstram como o processo de bancarização está afetando o perfil do modelo comercial do setor varejista nacional.

Space is one of the most scarce, expensive, and difficult to manage resources in urban retail establishments. A typical retail space broadly consists of two areas, the customer facing frontroom area and the backroom area, which is used for inventory storage and other support activities. While frontrooms have received considerable amount of attention from both academics and practitioners, backrooms are an often neglected area of retail space management and design. However, the allocation of space to the backroom and its management impact multiple operational aspects of retail establishments. These include in-store labor utilization, delivery schedules, product packaging, and inventory management. Therefore, the backroom area directly affects the performance of the store because it impacts stock-outs, customer service levels, and labor productivity. Moreover, extant literature suggests that backroom related operations contribute to a large fraction of the total retail supply chain costs. Thus, optimizing the management of backroom spaces is an important lever for store performance improvement. We address the gap in the extant literature related to space management of retail backrooms by investigating the following three questions: First, what is the effect of pack size on inventory levels and space needs in the backroom? Second, how can a given backroom space be efficiently utilized through optimal inventory control? Third, what is the optimal amount of space that should be allocated to the backroom in a given retail establishment? To address the first question, we evaluate the effect of two discrete pack sizes, order pack size (OPS) and storable pack size (SPS), on inventory levels and storage space requirements in the backrooms. While SPS drives the space needs for a given inventory level, OPS drives the amount of excess inventory and therefore, the space needs. Using inventory theory and probability theory, we quantify the amount of excess inventory and the expected stock-out probability for a given OPS in the case of a normally distributed demand. To address the second question, we discuss an inventory-theoretic approach to efficiently manage a given backroom space within a limited service restaurant. Specifically, we formulate a mathematical optimization model using mixed-integer linear programing with the objective of maximizing store profit. Applying this optimization model to real store data in collaboration with a major US retailer reveals cost implications related to constrained backroom space and the sensitivity of backroom space requirements to changes in OPS and SPS. The proposed model can serve as a decision support tool for various real-world use cases. For instance, the tool can help the retailers to identify (i) items whose contribution to the store profit does not justify their space needs in the backroom, and (ii) stores that are constrained in their profitability growth by backroom space limitations. To address the third question, we introduce the notion of interdependency between the frontroom and the backroom of a retail establishment. Such interdependencies yield nontrivial trade-offs inherent to the optimal retail space allocation. Demand can be lost due to unavailability of inventory (or inventory stock-out), which is a result of scarce amount of backroom space, or due to unavailability of sufficient frontroom space (or space stock-out). Furthermore, constrained backroom spaces increase in-store labor cost and the ordering costs incurred per unit of revenue generated in a retail establishment. The strategic decision model formulated in this chapter accounts for revenue, inventory cost, labor cost and ordering cost to determine the optimal amount of backroom space that should be allocated within a retail establishment. Sensitivity analyses with respect to the change in input parameters is used to connect the backroom space allocation and its impact on store profit to the different supply chain levers that can be managed by the retailers.

Thailand has been one of the emerging markets in Asia in recent decades. The pattern of consumers has dramatically changed due to the arrival of various modern retail trade formats. Thai consumers have been shifting from traditional retail formats to modern retail formats and frequently do ‘outshopping’, particularly from rural areas to town centres. This has led to the decline of rural retailers. To improve this situation, the concept of developing retailers in market towns has been adopted. However, it is unclear what form (i.e. store format) this takes and on which factors (store image attributes and customer characteristics) the role depends. This thesis examines the effect of store image attributes and customer characteristics on retail agglomeration format choice for a regular grocery outshopping trip. The conceptual framework is constructed following the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) model. The concept of store image is applied as the stimulus, and the customer characteristics are proxy variables representing the organism, which lead to the choice decision as the response. The discrete choice model is applied using the mixed logit modelling approach. The choice set includes (1) a traditional agglomeration retail format (TAF), (2) a modern agglomeration retail format (MAF) and (3) a non-agglomeration retail format (NAF). The unit of analysis is a household in a regional city that does grocery shopping regularly. The stratified random sampling divided the population into an urban area and a rural area. Then, a random sample was drawn within each stratum by a simple random sampling − a store format. A systematic random sampling was applied by intercepting each household representative in order to maintain randomness. The chosen area is Nakhon Ratchasima province which is one of the regional cities in north-eastern Thailand. It consists of 2,600,000 people (around 830,000 households) and about 75% of the total population live in a rural area. The total sample consists of 1,521 households. The choice experiment is adopted by a computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) survey. The parameters are estimated using the simulated maximum likelihood approach. The models are built, and then marginal effects are used to examine the effects of store image attributes and customer characteristics to the retail agglomeration format choice. Reliability and validity are tested. The results from the chosen model reveal that increases in seven store image attributes: product quality, customer service, price, travel time, atmosphere, accessibility, and range of products, affect the probability to shop at TAF and MAF with the same degree, while in store attributes have less effect on the probability to shop at NAF. The product quality, customer service level, and price are the most important attributes affecting the retail agglomeration format choice, following by atmosphere, accessibility, and range of products, respectively. The results indicate that consumers in rural areas are likely to shop at TAF and NAF than consumers in urban areas. Older rather than younger customers tend to shop at NAF. Finally, the higher income households have more opportunity to shop at MAF than the lower income households. This study employs the theory of cumulative attraction as theoretical lens of the study. However, this study contributes to the theory by examining further dimensions. The first contribution is to the theory of cumulative attraction by considering a location dimension. It investigates the role of retail agglomeration formats in market towns. The second dimension contributes to retail management by focusing on retail management style as traditional and modern retail formats. Another contribution of this study is the taxonomy of retail agglomeration formats. It indicates how retailers are planned and constructed, to what extent they are managed and marketed, and what their management styles are. This classification system can categorise existing retail formats, e.g. weekend markets, periodic markets, night markets, tourist attraction retail sites, and exhibition retail outlets which cannot be classified by the previous studies. The application of this taxonomy is applied as retail agglomeration formats in this study.

This dissertation is a collection of three empirical essays in industrial organization using data from an anonymous retailer. All these chapters examine some facet of consumer behavior. The first chapter estimates demand for store and national brand over-the-counter pain relievers. There is evidence that the substitution patterns between store and national brands are starkly asymmetric- price cuts by national brands steal more share from store brands than store brand price cuts steal share from national brands. Another distinguishing characteristic between store and national brand products is that store brands can be found at only one retailer while national brands are found virtually anywhere. I find that an increase in the number of competing local retailers is associated with an increase (decrease) in store brand (national brand) share, which is consistent with the unique availability of store brands. In the second chapter, I investigate consumer inventory behavior and find that the increase in quantity resulting from a sale is in large part due to stockpiling motives. For example, using field experiment data, the estimated increase in consumption (net of stockpiling) is close to zero for the product categories mouthwash, diapers, and chocolate. I also identify a selection bias when one uses store-level data to estimate the impact of price on quantity. The third chapter evaluates the effectiveness of lowering prices versus just claiming prices are lower on demand, and how this relates to consumer price knowledge. Using a large-scale field test in which we varied both actual price (in the absence of any cue) and claimed price, we find that the response of these two effects is positively correlated.
(cont.) A likely explanation for this positive correlation is that customers simply care more about the prices of some products than others. Also, customers respond more to low prices on items for which they have good price knowledge, but respond more to low price claims when their price knowledge is poor, although this is a second order effect.

Impulse buying is a widely pervasive phenomenon. Statistics shows that more and more shoppers are experiencing irresistible urge to purchase unplanned and in most cases unnecessary product. Existing researches fall short in identifying most suitable tools that marketers can adopt in order to promote impulsive sales. Therefore, this thesis provides deep analysis of those, controllable factors that influence impulse buying. Particularly four external cues are examined: product display, promotional signage, sensory elements and social atmospherics. Research has deductive approach. First, existing academic articles and research papers are analyzed. Then two different methods of primary data collection are covered. Self-reported online survey is used as a main research tool. Received data of 193 respondents is analyzed in SPSS software using Pearson correlation test and standard multiple regression analysis. Results of store experiment and interviews are covered next. The research concludes that product display has strongest impact on impulse buying, influences and encourages consumer unplanned purchase decisions. Thus, marketers are advised to promote product presentation in the stores.

Most companies' desire is to create customer relationships and the working methods have changed as a result of the increased e-commerce. Because of digitalization, the retailing field has changed dramatically. Consequently, physical stores are facing competition from online companies. Previous literature has stated that physical stores now have to focus on what happens inside the store in order to generate a pleasant experience. The research question focused on examining how Elgiganten, the largest consumer electronic store in Sweden, use customer experience and customer value in order to influence store attractiveness. This was carried out by using a qualitative approach, an exploratory nature and by conducting in-depth interviews with consumers and the company's head managers. The main findings of this study suggest that customers can not take advantage of some services when buying through e-commerce. This ability to provide service is an important part of the handling of competition from e-commerce. The retailers need to find the right balance between engagement and emotions in the physical retail environment in order to appeal to the consumers’ desires of trust & reliability in order to create an attractive experience point. By means of this, the thesis emphasised the imperative of creating experience in offline retailing.

For that matter, we investigate the factors that influence employee engagement in sporting goods retail stores, and the impact of relationships interactions between the team and the manager.   Method: This study was conducted through a deductive approach. The data was collected from two sporting goods retail stores: Stadium and Intersport, located in Gävle, Sweden; through questionnaires for both store’s employees, and face-to-face interviews to the store managers and employees. Finally, data was analyzed with the programs Microsoft Excel and SPSS.   Result  &  Conclusions:  We  found  out  that  sporting  goods  retail  store’s  employees  were mainly motivated by personal factors, job satisfaction factors and intrinsic factors, such as belongingness to the team. It appears that employees give significance importance to the relationship  they  have  with  their  manager  and  coworkers.  We  also  found  out  that  the relationship with the customers has a huge impact on employee engagement. Suggestions for future research: This research was conducted in a geographic area in a specific  country  (Sweden).  Additionally,  it  is  based  on  the  sporting  goods  retail  market. Thus, it could be interesting to extend this research to others sectors and markets, or to do the same research in another country. Contribution  of  the  thesis:  While  theories  about  employee  engagement  consider  the relationship between employees and co-workers, and employees and manager as important for  employee  engagement,  we  empirically  discovered  that  the  relationship  between employees and customers influences employee engagement significantly. This thesis considers consumer perceptions of large stores in Japan. A lack of published English language research concerned with consumer behaviour in Japan was noted, despite strong and growing interest in the Japanese consumer market. Japanese distribution is reviewed as the background to an empirical study of store perceptions in Japan. This review considered Japanese wholesale and retail structures in detail in order to provide information necessary to understand the situation of large retail stores in Japan. The possibility of substantial store 'loyalty' in Japan was considered on the basis of an observed hierarchical structure to store preferences. A review of the literature pertaining to consumer 'loyalty' revealed that genuinely 'loyal' behaviour is likely to be rare. Consumepr reference was considered, and the development of hierarchical preference was identified. - An empirical study was carried out over a one year period in Japan. The study involved a two part survey employing repertory grid interviews and a questionnaire survey. Four regional cities and five consumer types were employed for the survey. This approach proved successful in collecting a large volume of detailed data. The use of repertory grid as a technique for data collection was considered in the light of its use with Japanese consumers in the Japanese language. It was concluded that Japanese consumers have clear and detailed perceptions of the large stores available for their use. Some differences were identified between consumer types and different geographical locations in Japan.

The purpose of this single case study was to explore the strategies used to minimize absenteeism and increase productivity outcomes for organizational effectiveness at a retail store in northwest Florida. The targeted population included managers who had success with minimizing absenteeism and enhancing productivity in the retail store. Herzberg's 2-factor theory was the conceptual framework, and semistructured interviews with 5 participants were the primary data collection technique. The secondary data sources included employee absence data and gross profit reports for 3 years (2014 through 2016), publicly displayed goal charts, and the absence policy that employees sign to document receipt and understanding of the policy. Methodological triangulation was established by analyzing and comparing data from the semistructured interviews with the company documents. Based on the NVivo coding tool used to identify word frequencies and thematic analysis, 3 primary themes emerged: leadership support and comradery, effective communication, and competitive compensation. The implications for social change included the potential to provide retail managers with the tools needed to decrease absenteeism, enhance productivity, increase organizational effectiveness, increase profitability in retail stores, and develop quality customer service to improve living conditions.

The purpose of this thesis is to explore how stores in the retail sector and in business to consumers´ relations, are engaged in the CRM systems use and management. The purpose is also to see if the information that is gathered by the headquarters is transferred down to the stores.   The research follows a realistic philosophy combined with an abductive approach and a qualitative method. The choice of design to this research was an exploratory research combined with a case study strategy over a cross-sectional time horizon. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews with managers in the six different retail stores.      The findings from this thesis showed various results when it came to the use of the CRM system and the amount of information that the stores got access to from the headquarter/partner. None of the stores managed their CRM systems themselves, it was only managed by the headquarters or partners of the retail chains. The amount of information that was transferred down from the headquarters or partners, affected how much the stores used the CRM system. The stores that got much information had more knowledge about the CRM system and used it a lot more than stores that got less information.   The limitations that can be found in this thesis is that it is only a small amount of stores within the retail market that has been examined, this might give a misleading result for the rest of the retail market and the global market as whole.

This study employs three ordinary least squares regression equations to analyze retail grocery store prices. The grocery stores studied were from the Tucson metropolitan area. The price data collected consisted of a typical market basket purchased in this market. Different price categories were analyzed in order to determine the relevance of interstore comparisons between two different brand categories, national brand and cheapest brand categories. Grocery prices for the two brands were tested to determine if the organization of retail grocery stores (chain and independents), location of the store, store neighborhood average income, and size (in square feet) of the grocery store affected price.

Zara leads the fast-fashion industry introducing over 12,000 unique items per year [5], selling in over 2,000 stores and generating rch16091 [British pound symbol]11.6 Bn in yearly sales [8]. Critical to this success, Zara's Distribution Department continually focuses on improving the algorithms and programs which the company uses to move clothing through the supply chain. Demand variability and short product lifecycles make this task extremely challenging, especially when coupled with limited storage space in many Zara stores. This thesis helps stores which are challenged by low storage capacity and high consumer demand by testing three inventory management methods. The first method creates a virtual cost in the inventory redistribution algorithm, which decreases the likelihood that an over-capacity store will hold an item. This method decreased the amount of post transfer inventory by 15 % in capacity constrained stores while only experiencing a .1% loss of profits when compared to the current process. The second method opens new transfer routes for capacity constrained stores to move inventory into stores which benefit from the additional items, while reducing the non-performing stock at the capacity constrained store. These store to store routes quickly transfer items while reducing the stock of the origin store. The final method improves existing capacity returns, which automatically move inventory from capacity constrained stores back to the Distribution Center. The new method optimizes the selection of items to improve redistribution to other stores, resulting in additional full priced sales, while removing the same amount of items from the origin store. The implementation of these processes will reduce stock management problems experienced at Zara stores, while ensuring that other stores have the opportunity to sell at full price.

A new retail institution type has emerged in South Korea that is unique in comparison to any previous retail institution type. The study of this emergence and its growth has implications for the future structure of retail both in South Korea and in other parts of the world. To proceed with a study of this new retail institution type, appropriate theory base and research findings about past retailing in South Korea were needed; however, a search of literature indicated that South Korean retailing has been the subject of limited and mostly fragmented research. Historically, many researchers have endeavored to study retail evolution in Western countries. Although extensively studied, used in conceptual work, and applied as foundation in empirical work, some limitations exist with previous retail evolution theories: inability to cover all types of retail institutions, lack of geographic universality, and limited quantification. In conjunction with these limitations, the historic evolution and current structures of retail institution types in South Korea, on the surface, appear to be very different from the evolution and structure of retailing in the Western hemisphere. Several reasons for this difference appear to involve the unique features of South Korea and its culture: retailing types were imported to South Korea within a very compressed time period, unique geography includes small land size and high population concentration in South Korea, the government control and the political insulation of South Korea are different from Western cultures. The purpose of this study was to examine the evolution of retail institution types in South Korea with a proposed model. To examine the evolution of retail institution types in South Korea and to develop a more universal research model to explain this evolution, a qualitative research design was used. Specifically, a modified grounded theory type of design, with a historical/ comparative analysis method, was used in this study. First, the grounded theory process was used to develop a graphical representation or model using information from previous research. Second, the researcher collected publicly available data in South Korea from government offices, trade and industry associations, public libraries, and websites on the Internet. Through comparative analysis, data from the South Korean retail industry were examined and compared to the working model. According to the data analysis, the CREM was partially supported. Regarding the spiral evolution, all types of indicators (e.g., sales, profit, market share, operating cost) did not continuously increase as retail institutions mature, which was in contrast to the CREM, but fluctuated whenever environmental influences interrupted the growth. Four spiral endings were found: (1) upgrade, (2) stay and eventually go out of business, (3) downgrade, and (4) change types of retail institution. In the conflict part, a new retail institution type started competing with its own type, other traditional retail institution types, and a new retail institution type; therefore, the conflict portion in the CREM was also supported. Environmental influences affected not only the emergence of a new retail institution type but also the conflict among retail institution types and the evolution process. In addition, a new reciprocal relationship was found between environmental influences and a new retail institution type and between consumer preference of store/product attributes and a new retail institution type. The environmental influence part was therefore partially supported. The consumer influence variables in the CREM were also supported. For future research, the final CREM could be the base of research in many types of retail institution and in any countries that have unique retail environments. Using the CREM from this study of retail evolution in South Korea, current and future retail institutions could predict both consumers' changes depending on environmental influences and what competitive advantages they must achieve to provide benefits to these consumers. In addition, researchers, both academic and retail, could use the final CREM to study the emergence and characteristics of a new retail institution type by analyzing current retail institution types

Background: Nowadays, customers tend to take product quality and positive brand image for granted, which makes the formation of a new marketing strategy even more vital. In an age characterized by information overload and lack of time, factors such as emotional, cognitive or symbolic values become increasingly valuable in marketing. In contrast to American retail clothing stores such as Abercrombie & Fitch, who to a large extent use ambience as a strategic approach, the authors have not experienced as strong ambience strategies among Swedish retail stores. Therefore, the authors want to investigate if Swedish retailers make use of ambience as a strategic marketing approach and how the ambience is perceived by the consumers. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explore if and how ambience (lighting, fragrance and music) is used as a strategic marketing approach by retailers in Sweden and how the ambience is perceived by the consumers. In addition the authors will examine if the consumers’ perception of the current ambience is reflected in their in-store behaviour (willingness to browse and willingness to buy). Method: In order to fulfil the purpose, a mixed method of explanatory and descriptive design was chosen, by collecting quantitative data in the form of a survey and qualitative data through interviews. The questionnaire consisted of 91 respondents from JC, Carlings and Dressmann. Interviews with store-managers from JC, Carlings and Dressmann were also conducted in order to reflect if and how the current ambience is used as a marketing approach. Conclusion: Swedish retail stores use the ambience merely as a means for creating a pleasant store environment. The perceived atmosphere varies for different customers. The three ambient factors, lighting, music and fragrance, differed in level of importance for the three chosen stores. One conclusion drawn from this is that the age-group plays an important role in how the ambience is perceived. The results show that there is a positive relationship between the consumers’ perception of the ambience, their feelings and in-store behaviour; within all three stores. This indicates that if the positive feelings increase in intensity, so will the consumers’ willingness to browse and their willingness to buy from the store. As a conclusion, Swedish retails should consciously use ambience as a strategic marketing approach to intentionally affect the consumers’ willingness to browse and buy.

O objetivo deste estudo é a avaliação da eficiência de uma cadeia de lojas de retalho que representa várias marcas internacionais de prestígio no mercado Português e a identificação dos determinantes que influenciam a eficiência. O estudo compara o desempenho das lojas compostas por 3 diferentes marcas do segmento Brand Equity e propõe melhorias no âmbito da melhoria da performance. Para avaliar a eficiência e os seus determinantes a análise é realizada em duas fases: na primeira fase a metodologia Análise Envoltória de Dados (DEA) é usada para determinar os níveis de eficiência e na segunda fase, os resultados obtidos na primeira fase são estimados através de uma regressão linear quantile de forma a determinar os determinantes da eficiência. Os principais resultados revelam que o número de lojas eficientes aumenta quando estamos perante retorno variável à escala e quando a variável renda é inserida no modelo DEA. As marcas e a localização comercial das lojas são os determinantes da eficiência.
This study aims to assess efficiency of a retail stores chain of Fashion & Accessories that represents several international prestigious brands in the Portuguese market and to identify the driving forces that influence efficiency. The study compares the performance among the stores of 3 different brands of the Brand equity market and provides insights into ways of improving performance. To evaluate the efficiency and its determinants we use a two-approach methodology: first Data Envelopment Analysis methodology (DEA) is used to determine the efficient scores and then a Quantile linear regression to determine the efficiency drivers. Main results show that the number of efficient stores increase under variable return to scale and when the variable rent is included in the DEA model. The brands and the retail commercial location are the factors that explain efficiency.

Phantom inventories result from mismatch in the inventory that is actually available at a store on the shelf and the existing inventory as per the data record at any retail store. Inventory on hand (IOH) record for each SKU(stock keeping unit) at any store is summation of on-shelf and back room inventory. Mismatch in this data impacts the product availability at a store and in turn results in lost opportunities of revenues for the store and the CPG (consumer product goods) manufacturer. A phantom inventory remains unnoticed unless an intervention such as regular shelf re-stocking, physical audit or consumer inquiry occurs at the store. However, even these interventions may not coincide with actual shelf stock out event and hence, the phantom inventory would continue to exist. This report proposes a Bayesian approach based on consecutive zero sales in the POS (point of sales system) while inventory IOH remains positive through the observation time. The daily demand is designed using a negative binomial distribution, which is used further to determine the posterior probability of phantom inventories given a specific set of consecutive days without sales of a SKU at a store. The prevalence of phantom inventories is then calculated using all the number of consecutive days without sales for each SKU store combination and is compared to a Gumbel distribution. This approach has been applied on one data set including POS and IOH data provided by a CPG manufacturer, where the prevalence was found to be 11.63%.

The research objectives were to determine (a) interrelationships among components of Korean apparel retail stores' management strategies, (b) effects of perceived environmental uncertainty on their management strategies, (c) effects of stores' management strategies on their performance, and (d) market-orientation strategies the stores have implemented. Four hundred top managers of Korean apparel stores in Seoul, Busan, Suwon, Daejeon, and Daegu completed a questionnaire. A structural equations model was used to test the hypotheses concerning relationships between the research variables. The exogenous variables include components of perceived environmental uncertainty (market turbulence, competitive intensity) and top management's willingness to adapt a changing market (top-management emphasis and risk aversion). The endogenous variables include components of market-orientation strategy (intelligence generation, intelligence dissemination, response design, response implementation), organicity of organizational structure (centralization, formalization, specialization), and satisfaction with store performance (relative to other Korean retail stores, relative to key competitors). Many of the hypotheses were supported. Perceived market turbulence positively affected stores' market-orientation strategies and functional specialization. Market orientation strategy positively affected stores' functional specialization and centralization of decision making. Intelligence generation positively affected satisfaction with store performance relative to other Korean retail stores and relative to key competitors, and response implementation positively affected satisfaction with store performance relative to other Korean retail stores. Some positive relationships were found between perceived environmental uncertainty and top management's willingness to adapt to a changing market. Also, seven of the eight tested relationships were significant and positive between market-orientation strategy and top management's willingness to adapt to a changing market. Top-management emphasis positively affected organicity of organizational structure. Formalization of store structure positively affected satisfaction with store performance relative to other Korean retail stores and relative to key competitors. A major conclusion is that Korean apparel stores' top managers did not view environmental conditions as important influences on their stores' performance, although their perceptions of environmental uncertainty affected their stores' strategic management in such terms as response design, intelligence generation, and intelligence dissemination.. In addition, despite the positive effects of perceived environmental uncertainty on stores' centralization and functional specialization, the top managers appeared reluctant to fundamentally change their stores' organizational structures.

This study uses four survey datasets across Britain and Taiwan to aim at conducting empirical and nationally representative cross-national consumer segmentation on four retail formats (Internet, hypermarket/superstore, supermarket, and traditional market) and two consumption trends (convenience and health trends). A diagnosis of equivalence, which precedes the segmentation process, suggests that the retail format data in the two countries are readily combinable, but the consumption trend data cannot be aggregated for cross-national consumer segmentation. Cross-national consumer segments of the hypermarket/superstore and the supermarket are found to be similar to each other. They are younger, financially better off, and living in the capital city. The only demographic characteristics that exist among supermarket shoppers but not hypermarket/superstore shoppers is gender. The female are more likely than the males to patronize the supermarket. This may be attributable to the notion that going to hypermarket/superstores often requires driving a car and taking bulky goods back home, which are arguably male tasks. On the other hand, hypermarket/superstore shoppers, rather than supermarket shoppers, are characterised by large household size. Cross-national consumer segments of the Internet and the traditional market, though found, are more real in words than in substance because of the significance of the national culture dimension that signifies the impracticability of the formation of pan-country consumer segments for each of these two retail formats. The result is understandable in the case of the traditional market, which has been widely acknowledged as a culturally bound institution. Yet the result seems astonishing in the case of the Internet, which has been noted as possessing very high internationalization capability and potential to transcend across national cultures. In contrast to the hypermarket/superstore and the supermarket, whose technologies have successfully transcended national cultures across Britain and Taiwan, Internet technology cannot successfully transcend national cultures across the two countries to the extent that cultural groupings are more influential than most of the personal background factors being considered in online shopping decision making.

Retail is changing. E-commerce is increasing its percentage of total sales while physical storesare closing. This affects how real estate companies work with retail spaces to minimizevacancies, and short-term leasing, also called pop-up stores, is one way to do so. Pop-ups haveexisted in different forms for a very long time. Seasonal stores and farmers markets are twoexamples. The modern-day pop-up, assessed and discussed in this study, is the one not alwaysused for sales purposes but also marketing purposes. This study aims to see how modern-daypop-ups can fill the void left by rapidly closing retail stores.The study was carried out by reviewing existing literature about pop-ups and how they work,followed by semi-structured interviews with real estate companies and consultants throughoutthe property industry. Emphasis was put on bottlenecks and problems with implementing shortterm leasing and how market platforms can aid real estate companies with this.The study shows that real estate companies and the industry as a whole are aware of the statusof traditional retail and that they have started to use short-term leasing to a greater extent thanbefore. The real estate companies were positive towards using short-term leases as a tool tominimize vacancies. However, it also shows some problems with implementing short-termleases from a real estate company's perspective. The main obstacles found during the studywere transparency issues regarding vacant spaces, how short-term leases can negatively affectproperty values, and the time-consuming aspect of signing short-term contracts. Concludingthat market platforms can solve certain problems regarding short-term leases, but others haveto be solved by the real estate industry itself.
Detaljhandeln genomgår en förändring. För varje år som går ökar e-handelns andelav detaljhandelns försäljning och antalet butiksvakanser blir allt större. Detta påverkar hurfastighetsbolag jobbar med sina butiksytor för att minimera det ökade antalet vakanser. Etttillvägagångssätt är att arbeta med korttidsuthyrningar, så kallade pop-up butiker. Pop-upbutiker har funnits väldigt länge och i olika former, så som säsongsbutiker och lanthandel. Denmoderna typen av pop-up butiker som kommer tas upp och diskuteras i denna uppsats är dockden som inte alltid är till för att maximera försäljning utan också för att använda imarknadsföringssyfte. Denna studie syftar till att undersöka hur moderna pop-up butiker kanhjälpa till att fylla det vakuum som lämnats av ett ökat antal vakanta butikslokaler.Uppsatsen skrevs genom en litteraturstudie av existerande litteratur om pop-up butiker samtsemistrukturerade intervjuer med fastighetsbolag och konsulter inom fastighetsbranschen. Härlades stor vikt vid de flaskhalsar och problem som uppstår i samband med implementering avkorttidsuthyrning samt hur marknadsplattformar kan hjälpa fastighetsägare att lösa dessa.Studien visade att fastighetsägare har börjat använda sig av korttidsuthyrningar i en störreutsträckning än tidigare. Fastighetsägarna var positiva till att använda sig av korttidsuthyrningarsom ett verktyg för att minska vakanser. Det visade sig också att det finns problem medimplementering av korttidsuthyrningar från ett fastighetsägarperspektiv. De största problemensom studien visade på var transparens av tomma lokaler, hur korttidsuthyrningar kan påverkafastighetsvärden negativt samt tidsåtgången för att skriva ett korttidskontrakt. Vissa problemkan lösas av marknadsplattformar för korttidsuthyrning medans andra behöver lösas avfastighetsbranschen i sin helhet.

O espaço em área de venda, identificado pelos retalhistas como o seu recurso mais dispendioso, assume um papel importante como factor explicativo das vendas, sendo dada relevância à sua influência ao longo de toda a investigação. Por outro lado, procura-se avaliar a importância do espaço e de outros factores para diferentes categorias de produtos e segmentos de loja. Este estudo serve-se de um exemplo representativo de lojas que operam no mercado português, pertencentes a um dos principais grupos retalhistas existentes, para avaliar esta problemática Relativamente à metodologia adoptada no estudo do grupo de retalho português recorreu-se a modelos econométricos - regressão linear, segmentação e modelos de mistura de regressão, usando informação da empresa e das suas insígnias. Concluiu-se que o espaço é um factor determinante para as vendas, cuja importância varia entre lojas, grupos de lojas e categorias de produtos. Estes resultados são importantes na tomada de decisão do retalhista, na medida em que contribuem para a realização de estudos de simulação de lojas, prevendo os efeitos das variações de vendas provocados por alterações de espaço. Os factores relacionados com o preço face à concorrência, rendimento per capita da população alvo e qualidade no atendimento também foram analisados e inferiu-se sobre a sua importância relativa. Os modelos de segmentação adoptados foram também úteis, porque permitiram identificar grupos homogéneos de lojas, facultando ao gestor informação útil para a definição de políticas direccionadas a estes grupos.
The following dissertation covers the field of identification of the determinant sales factors at the distribution market, with the emphasis on the retail sector. The sales area, which is considered by retailers as the highest investment outlay point, assumes an important role as explanatory sales factor and gets a relevant attention throughout the research according to its influential character. On the other hand, the ambition has been set to evaluate the importance of the retail sales area and of the other factors concerning various product categories and various segments of stores. This study operates with a representative example of stores working in the Portuguese market and belonging to one of the existing local retail groups, with the objective of analysing this problematic. As for the methodology applied to the study of the Portuguese retail group, the econometric models were chosen linear regression, segmentation, regression mixture models, survey information of the company in question and its store formats. To sum up, the sales area is a determinant sales factor, which importance varies between the stores, groups of stores and product categories. These results are relevant to the retail's decisions since they facilitate the realization of underlying studies predicting the effects of the sale variations provoked by sales area alteration. The factors related to the price contest in face of the competitors, the income per capita of the population as well as the service quality were analysed and studied its relative importance. The applied segmentation models proved to be useful since they allowed identify homogeneous store groups, delivering valuable information to the managers that facilitates the definition of particular attitude policies regarding these groups

"Malaysian department stores under-performed', preliminary desk research says. "Department stores need to monitor the consumers and use merchandising as a competitive tool", practitioners and academicians advise. Within this parameter, the thesis examined the relationship between consumers, department stores and retail merchandising. First, the author explored the impact of the changing market on this `universal provider' and underlined how the latter had coped (successfully/unsuccessfully) with these changes through its merchandising activities. Second, she investigated on the multifaceted dimensions of retail merchandising and established a framework for strategic merchandise decisions. Third, she tested this framework in the Malaysian market. Given that the key to effective merchandising depends heavily on defining and understanding the target clients, to test the above construct, a consumer survey was undertaken. Likewise, since fashionable items made up the bulk of department stores' merchandise, the research instrument was constructed towards uncovering the shoppers' attitudes towards fashion. The gathered responses were then subjected to factor and cluster analysis. The former technique was used to identify the fashion lifestyle orientations. On the other hand, the latter method was used to classify the `cases'. Through these techniques, five fashion lifestyles orientation were uncovered and seven types of customers with fashion lifestyle orientations ranging from as few as two to as many as five factors were underlined. Further analysis established that local department stores should concentrate on three clusters, which made up 77 per cent of the total market. A broad overview shows that although they are department store shoppers, they shopped in other store types as well and engaged in extensive cross shopping. Moreover, when making purchases, their main trade-off was `quality' and `price'. Although they generally did not seek the cheapest price, there were on several occasions that quality was compromised for a `better' price. This behaviour was mostly evidenced in the cluster that made up of many Chinese. Another significant discovery was, wide assortment, an attribute most notable in department store retailing, was not distinctively important to these target markets. At the end of the investigation, a strategic merchandise mix - set of merchandise that meet the needs and expectations of these three clusters, was offered. It is only through this attainment (a strategic merchandise mix) that local department stores can realise their true potential.

While much has been written about retail stores and the retail environment, franchises and organisational marketing, not much can be found on “host” organisations such as shopping centres and their role within the marketing mix. A unique disparity exists within shopping centres in that not only are they an organisation with their own brand identity and culture, but they also play host to numerous retailers and franchises with very clear brands and messages of their own. The question that is often posed to the landlord is therefore whose message or what message is the correct one to market to the common consumer-base targeted by both the shopping centre (landlord) and the tenant (retailers). When considering this, it is important to understand that a symbiotic relationship exists between landlord and tenant within shopping centres in that if a tenant is successful this will result in greater rentals for the landlord and if the landlord’s property is successful, i.e. popular, this will result in greater revenue for the tenant. Both parties therefore actively engage in marketing of their businesses and whilst the message is often noticeably different, what is unique is that this is often to the same consumer-base. Tenants in many shopping centres contribute towards centre marketing expenses as part of their lease agreements and as a result have certain expectations in terms of what message is being marketed. Shopping centres varying in size and tenant numbers make the landlords marketing role that much more complex and often generic messaging is employed to umbrella the wide offering available. This study aims at investigating the expectations held by retail tenants of their shopping centre landlords through the internal communications function. Corporate communication theory as well as public relations theory was used as a grounding.

Trends such as online shopping, fast pace of lifestyle and wellness issues are key drivers for consumers' preferences of shopping activities and product selection. There is evidence that food retail has shifted towards smaller in size stores and ready meals or food products which require less time for cooking. In fact, the frozen food market has increased recently and is projected to rise by 27% by 2020. This study focuses on energy efficiency of small size frozen food supermarkets. The investigation started with in-situ monitoring of energy use and environmental conditions in two frozen food stores with different HVAC but same refrigeration systems and store operation schedules. A dynamic thermal model of frozen food stores was developed using EnergyPlus and validated using the monitored data. The model takes into account interlinked heat exchanges between building, HVAC and refrigeration systems and was used to investigate energy efficiency improvements. Two HVAC systems were examined; coupling heating, air-conditioning and ventilation (coupled system) and separating heating and air-conditioning from ventilation (decoupled system). A number of refrigeration systems (remote, centralised, cascade, transcritical CO2 booster) and working fluids were investigated. Analysis of the monitored data has shown that energy use of frozen supermarkets is at the upper range of published supermarkets energy use benchmarks (1085 kWh/m2/annum). It was also shown that sales area temperature is highly affected by HVAC controls, refrigeration equipment and transient customers' pattern. The computational study has identified energy performance of sub-systems and their interactions. Results indicate that 61% of total energy use is due to the refrigeration system while HVAC and lighting are the next most energy intensive systems. Apart from lighting upgrade to LED which offers high energy savings (23%), energy efficiency can be improved for both coupled and decoupled HVAC systems by incorporating night ventilative cooling and operating remote LT cabinets with lower ambient temperature. Night ventilative cooling can lead to reduction of 3.6% in total energy use. Centralised refrigeration systems change the heating/cooling balance and can reduce the total energy use by up to 20% for a CO2 centralised system. The results of this research project are a contribution towards better understanding of energy use in food dominant supermarkets and their energy savings potential.

Small business owners can suffer fluctuations in profitability during the entrance of big box stores within their neighborhood that grab market share with more recognizable brands and change the retail environment. A multiple case study was completed to explore the strategies small business owners use to stay profitable during retail gentrification, looking specifically at the neighborhoods of Adams Morgan and Congress Heights in Washington, DC. Porter's five forces and the resource-based view served as the conceptual framework for the study. Seven small business owners with over 80 years of experience in their locations provided input through semistructured interviews and identified effects of gentrification on their neighborhoods and strategies they used to combat retail gentrification. The thematic approach to data analysis was used to organically code the data based upon reoccurring themes. As a result, 5 strategies were identified within the data: pricing, advertising, customer acquisition, shopkeeper mentality, and neighborhood engagement. The results of this study might provide small business owners with a toolkit of strategies to assist in staying profitable during a time of change. The implications for social change include the potential for maintaining small business profitability during gentrification, encouraging entrepreneurship, employing local residents, and retaining the authentic culture of the neighborhood.

Shanghai Street is one of the oldest streets in Kowloon peninsula. The street was once a main business street in the area before being replaced by Nathan Road since 1970s. As the main business centre was shifted to Nathan Road, some of traditional neighbor shops still remain at the street. The key issue to be addressed by this dissertation is that although traditional neighbor shops and their businesses still exist at Shanghai Street, these shops have gradually diminished due to revitalization and gentrification of nearby streets. Tangible and intangible character defining elements of the street are diminishing. This dissertation will focus on the traditional neighbor shops and their businesses at Shanghai Street, by means of cultural mapping, and analysis the street in terms of tangible and intangible character defining elements. Shanghai Street, as one of the oldest streets in Hong Kong old urban district, can reflect the spirit and characteristic of Hong Kong “Street Life”. The objective of this dissertation is to understand and document traditional neighbor shops and their businesses at Shanghai Street, before the existing characters are gone.

In Hong Kong, the popularity of supermarkets and a globalized lifestyle have led to the declined of the traditional rice trade and rice shops. This issue is illustrated by the case of Shing Fat Rice Shop (thereafter referred to as ‟Shing Fat’’), the last tradition rice shop in Yuen Long, a highly urbanized district in the New Territories that was Hong Kong’s centre of rice production from the 19th century to the mid-20th century. Facing stiff competition from modern supermarkets, Shing Fat closed in December 2013. The significance of this research is that it is the last chance to document the last traditional rice shop business in Yuen Long. While the rice shop is no longer in business, the people involved – the operator, his family and its former customers – can still be reached for their stories. If this research is not carried out soon, the first-hand knowledge of a traditional rice shop business will be lost as memories of people connected with Shing Fat fade away in time. The focus of the research is to document the tangible and intangible aspects of a vanishing trade, using Shing Fat as a case study. By mapping the shop’s (1) operational history, (2) interior layout and its relationship to the daily business operation, and (3) relationship with the community through its customers, the tangible and intangible aspects of a traditional rice shop in Hong Kong can be documented and analyze in order to give a better understanding to this vanishing traditional retailing trade.

Abstract: The aim of the work is to evaluate six different projects of the expansion of the company Tesco through opening new stores and choosing the best option on the general level. Shops differ from each other by their size (express, supermarket, hypermarket) and by the way of obtaining the required area (lease, building an own store). The whole thesis is divided into three parts. The theoretical part describes the development of the Czech retail market with food since 1996, when Tesco entered the Czech market. Methodology part describes different methods of evaluating investments. Practical part compare above mentioned projects with each other by using the methods described in the methodological part. The thesis found as the most suitable way of expansion the express format store, realized more likely by the option of lease than building a new store. However author mentioned that decision, if it is better to open the store in the leased place or built an own store significantly depends on specific terms of the project and it is not possible clearly decide on the general level. The thesis was written on the base of data provided for the purposes of this work by Tesco Stores ČR plc.
