Abstract:
In a world where conflict is common, effective programs for reintegration of the combatants must exist for the post conflict societies. There is also a growing presence not only of gangs, but also of reintegration programs for those that chose to leave said gangs. To find what parts of those processes are alike and what parts are different is the objective of this thesis. For the former combatants, the thesis focuses on those of the former rebel group, meaning the illegally armed group. The reasons for comparing the two processes are that they outwardly look quite similar in the sense that the both deal with reintegration of formerly armed groups. Both groups have also been involved in some sort of violent action, and they are both being reintegrated into a society that they are not actively full members of. The research is carried out through a desk study using the method of a qualitative research through and abductive approach. The theoretical framework that is used is the inclusion-exclusion framework from the security-development nexus. This is also combined with the use of an analytical framework which was created using three different parts of full reintegration, namely social, political and economical reintegration. Through the usage of the case study of El Salvador, the thesis found that there were both similarities and differences between the two types of reintegration, however, the differences far outweighed the similarities. The thesis also found that while the two processes may be alike from an outside perspective, they are dealing with people of quite different needs. However, some potential can be seen for changes in both processes in order to improve their efficiency, though more research is needed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Som slutsats är möjligheterna för additiv tillverkning mycket lovande med flera olika riktningar utvecklingen kan gå.<br>The key to progress within every form of engineering in addition to product development whihin all markets is the capacity to manufacture new and improved products. The demands and need flr better and better products has brought forth a constant evolution within manufacturing systems from the traditional methods as forging, drilling and casting, to the modern additive systems.  This work, created in association with KTHs Department of machine design, examines and investigates 5 out of the 7 major families of additive manufacturing with the purpose of trying to define the future potential of additive manufacturing. In addition, for each system, a possible product or profession is suggested, made possible by the system in question. This is done to clarify the characteristics of that system.  This work also demonstrates the product development of a highly customized product, protective shells for small models, motivation behind the additive system of choice and the result of the iterative design process.  The investigation, the product development as well as expert opinion resulted in a discussion that both considers additive manufacturing future potential as well as how this potential is affected by the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020.  As a conclusion is the future for additive manufacturing very promising with several different directions in which development can go.

Abstract:
The purpose with this study is to examine on which arenas and on what places in the arenas students have experiences that bullying occurs. Another purpose with the study was to examine student’s experiences of the different shapes of bullying, which shapes are most abundant and why they are most commonly practiced. A qualitative method was used so the purpose of this study could be achieved. All informants in the study were students who went to high school. The results of the survey show that students have experiences that bullying mainly occurs in school. The corridors were the location of the school where the bullying was most common. The classrooms, the physical training and the dining room were places at the school were bullying also occurred. Bullying also occurs in other arenas like internet, fitness facilities, stations and central meeting places where students meet after school. The informants felt that it was unusual for someone who was getting bullied to be exposed to bullying at two or more arenas at the same time, but it did happen sometimes even if it was unusual. The results of the survey also shows that the verbal shape was the most common form of bullying that occurred. But even the psychological shape of bullying was relatively common. The informants experiences of the digital and the physical shapes of bullying were the most unusual forms that was being practiced. The different shapes was often used in various places so the bullying would not be detected. Some informants however hade experiences that bullying occurred open and public. Some people who was bullied were exposed to several forms simultaneously. The result also shows what shapes appear on the different arenas and places and why certain shapes occur in some places.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Former Lives of Buildings is a novel about thirty-one-year-old architect Adelle Corey. Adelle is a woman in denial. A nightmare figure called the Baron steals memories of her closest relationships and most poignant experiences. He hides the memories in Adelle's dreams, where he reconstructs them into buildings. The only way she can recover the memories is by cutting or tattooing these buildings into her skin. Adelle uses notebooks, mnemonic devices, and academic trivia to keep track of her daily routines. The novel takes place in contemporary times and opens in the burn unit of Bridgeport Hospital, Connecticut, where Adelle has been recovering for two months. She does not remember her stay prior to the opening day of the story, but she retains her memories from this day forward. Adelle's parents, her husband, and the mysterious woman Celesse St. Armand, who has been given charge over her care, refuse to allow Adelle to see her six-year-old son, Ben, until she can recover the missing days. Adelle suspects that something has happened to Ben. She seeks the help of Sam, her tattoo artist, to recover memories. The search uncovers painful truths about Adelle's childhood and marriage, ultimately forcing her to face that the Baron is a device she created to protect herself, not an outside force acting upon her. Adelle goes from a lonely, untrusting existence to a willingness to form deep friendships. She gains the capacity to face the whole truth instead of selecting only the comfortable parts. She does not find her son in any of the buildings. However, confronting the experiences hidden there gives her the strength to accept that she has passed her memory problems on to her son, who has not been able to remember his family since the fire. Although their marriage does not survive, Adelle and De learn to work together as parents.<br>M.F.A.<br>Masters<br>English<br>Arts and Humanities<br>Creative Writing

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this work we studied structural and dynamical aspects of highly fragile C10 H18 Decalin. Trans Decalin is locked into a pseudo-flat centrosymmetric conformation, while cis Decalin interchanges dynamically between chiral, pseudospherical ground states. On investigation of the phase behaviour trans Decalin was found to crystallise rapidly and cleanly; its crystal structure could be determined. From the crystal structure the dynamics of crystalline trans Decalin could be calculated using ab-initio lattice energy calculations and compared to measurements. Using neutron diffraction and mol. Dynamics simulations the amorphous structure of Decalin was investigated. The difference in structure to the common molecular liquid Cumene is significant. The features of the amorphous structure of sphere-like cis Decalin show strong resemblance to the ones of Argon and metallic glasses. The dynamics of Decalin were investigated in the slightly supercooled liquid range. Using neutron scattering and optical spectroscopy, data was collected for a wide spectral range and several temperatures. The data suggests high fragility for the generic Decalin mix, which is in agreement with reported results. By contrast to previous estimations, an extrapolation of our data indicates cis Decalin to be only slightly less fragile than the generic mixture. Finally a lower limit to the four point susceptibility function chi4 could be calculated and the number of correlated molecules determined. The evolution of this value as a function of Tg /T and relaxation time are in agreement with literatur

Abstract:
Long-term changes in soil profile characteristics and important soil physical, chemical and biological properties were evaluated and compared at 4 paired sites in NE Scotland, 44-61 years after the afforestation of agricultural soils planted with either Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.)) or Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris (L.)). At each paired site five profiles were studied in the afforested and five in the control agricultural soils. Comparison made between various properties in the pairs of soils showed a number of significant changes, which are summarised in Tables 2.18-2.20. The surface (O) horizon of the afforested soil could be differentiated into L, F and H horizons. The O horizon was rich in organic matter, crumb structured, porous and well-drained and was differentiated from the A horizon below by an irregular boundary. The A horizon was moderately well to excessively well-drained with a subangular blocky to crumb structure. This horizon was differentiated from the B horizon below by an irregular boundary. The agricultural soil profile was characterised by compact O and A horizons with a subangular blocky structure; each horizon was separated from the one below by a gradual, smooth horizon boundary. Afforestation increased the combined thickness of the O and A horizon by 0.21 cm yr-1. It caused a significant decrease in bulk density and had no effect on particle size distribution. At most sites % organic matter, C, C/N ratio, CEC and NH4+ concentration were higher and extractable P concentration lower in the O horizon and most of the A horizons of forest soils, compared to the agricultural soil. The concentration of N increased significantly in the O horizon. Soil pH, exchangeable Ca, Mg and K and % base saturation decreased significantly in most forest soil horizons compared to the agriculated soils. Exchangeable Na concentration increased in the B horizon. Accumulation rates of each element since afforestation were also calculated.

Viney, Howard. "Identifying strategic content among former public utilities." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2001. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/13436/.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance of privatisation and other forms of market liberalisation as tools of economic and political policy is well documented, and the concepts continue to command prominence in a large number of economies across the globe. Most academic research undertaken to date has focussed upon its macro-economic motivations, the importance of regulation, and increasingly assessments of the economic benefits of instituting privatisation programmes. The literature indicates a dearth of empirical research on the managerial aspects of privatisation: the strategic responses of the companies emerging from such privatisation programmes, and the key influences which have shaped their strategic responses. In general, the industries which have witnessed privatisation have tended to be former state owned enterprises, or industries of strategic importance, where low performance standards and quality failures have been characterised as being endemic. Clearly, there is a real need to learn from existing responses, so that models of best practice can be established to smooth the transition of organisations encountering strategic reorientation, and to prevent the development of new sets of operating difficulties. In addition, the literature suggests that existing managerial models which aim to provide business decision makers with viable strategic responses to changing circumstances have not been adequately tested in non-traditional market conditions such as those experienced by companies following a major privatisation. Accordingly, this study aims to identify the content of corporate and business level strategy among a sample of recently privatised former public utilities: the Regional Electricity Companies of England and Wales, and to understand the nature of the strategi~drivers which have helped to shape these strategic responses. In so doing, the research aims to create an understanding of the suitability of a range of corporate and business strategy combinations for application in a partially regulated environment, in order to enable a company: to identify and pursue the appropriate strategies in pursuit of competitive advantage; manage its relationships with a variety of strategic drivers; to fulfil its public service obligations; and in so doing to navigate a potentially uncertain environment in a time of profound change. In addition, the study aims to review a series of existing managerial models in the light of the experiences of the RECs, and determine the degree of confidence that can be said to exist in their applicability in non-traditional market situations. In particular, the thesis comments upon the applicability of the Miles and Snow typology of organisational strategy, structure and process in a regulated environment, and suggests some tentative amendments. This research is identified as being primarily exploratory, based as it is upon a study of a single industry. While the author has confidence in the validity of the findings, this thesis is intended to be the first stage in an extended research project which would see these findings subjected to rigorous verification in a wider sample of companies of this type. As discussed earlier, the need for research of this nature at this time is identified as being compelling due to the current proliferation of privatisation programmes, the severity of the problems that they are trying to resolve, and the unique position of UK industry to provide recommendations based upon practical experience. The research utilises a broadly phenomenological method. An extensive review of the literature revealed not only limitations in existing knowledge, but the work of various authors in identifying the available corporate and business level strategic options available to organisational decision makers. These lists of options provided a broad framework for the identification and gathering of data, and its inductive interpretation. The process of data collection was undertaken initially using a form of content analysis of published sources, against a framework derived from the literature and a series of exploratory interviews. From this process a series of observations, in the form of tentative propositions, were drawn. These propositions were then tested deductively using multiple in-depth interviews within three case study companies and the degree of confidence in each proposition established. The case study companies were selected on the basis of their ability to represent the industry as a whole, based upon their current approach to growth; the research having earlier identified three distinct sub-groupings of behaviour in respect of strategies for growth. The research resulted in a number of key findings. Firstly, that despite expectations that differing patterns of strategic response would emerge following market liberalisation, the companies remaining within the industry appear to have gravitated towards three basic generic responses; broadly defined as concentrated growth, organic market development, and market development by acquisition. Consequently, there is a large degree of strategic symmetry although tactical differences do remain. Secondly, that the importance of regulation as a driver of strategy can not be underestimated, even in those parts of the industry which are theoretically free from regulatory influence. The findings suggest even allowing for the importance of regulation, other factors such as ownership, leadership, as well as other external and internal factors all need to be accounted for. The general conclusion here was that the impact of strategic drivers was situational. Thirdly, that companies have little or no flexibility in their choice of the business/competitive strategy that they pursue, with a combination of market regulatory and consumer expectancy factors dictating their terms of competition. Finally, the research suggests a need for the amendment of the Miles and Snow typology before it is applied in regulated environments, as well as suggesting that a degree of caution is exercised in the use of some other established and externally verified managerial models. The research produces a wide range of recommendations for further study. These recommendations concern (a) verification of conclusions drawn by the research and (b) exploration of issues which emerged during the research process. The research extends the existing literature's understanding of strategic content decisions among companies adapting to situations of strategic reorientation. It provides numerous examples of the responses organisations followed to a variety of strategic drivers, and identifies options which have been identified as viable in the UK energy industry as it currently stands. The research fills a number of gaps identified within the literature in relation to: the nature of organisational responses to strategic change; the relationship between strategic content and strategic drivers; the ability of long standing managerial models to perfonn in non-traditional market situations; and most importantly the viability of strategic responses in regulated environments. There are a number of limitations which can be identified within the research. The qualitative nature of the research reflects a reliance upon interpretive analysis and opinion, either by the author or the industry managers who provide the majority of the primary data. However, the author has striven at all times for objectivity and has utilised techniques such as triangulation of data sources and collection methods to ensure objectivity. In addition, the focus upon a single industry may be viewed as a limitation upon the applicability of the findings to a wider business audience. However, in both of these cases, the author argues that the exploratory nature of the research and the acknowledgement of the need for, and intention to pursue, external verification overcomes any concerns that may exist in relation to these possible limitations. The thesis comprises thirteen chapters. Chapter One introduces the study by providing a brief critique of the literature and establishes the study's aims and objectives. Chapters Two and Four provide a review of the relevant literature in relation to the general management literature and the literature concerning issues relating to privatisation. The methodology and research design are outlined in Chapter Three. The remaining chapters present the analysis and interpretation of data in two stages: the preliminary stage in Chapters Five to Seven, which is summarised in Chapter Eight; and the primary stage in Chapters Nine to Eleven, summarised in Chapter Twelve. The thesis is concluded in Chapter Thirteen where the major findings and recommendations for future study are annotated.

Parnell, Andrew Christopher. "The statistical analysis of former sea level." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2005. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/10284/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides the first template for estimating relative sea level curves and their associated uncertainties. More specifically, the thesis estimates the changing state of sea level in the Humber estuary, UK, over the course of the Holocene. These estimates are obtained through Bayesian methods involving Gaussian processes. Part of the task involves collating data sources from both archaeologists and geologists which have been collected during frequent study of the region. A portion of the thesis is devoted to studying the nature of the data, and the adjustment of the archaeological information so it can be used in a format suitable for estimating former sea level. The Gaussian processes are used to model sea-level change via a correlation function which assumes that data points close together in time and space should be at a similar elevation. This assumption is relaxed by incorporating non-stationary correlation functions and aspects of anisotropy. A sequence of models are fitted using Markov chain Monte Carlo. The resultant curves do not pre-suppose a functional form, and give a comprehensive framework for accounting for their uncertainty. A further complication is introduced as the temporal explanatory variables are stochastic: they arise as radiocarbon dates which require statistical calibration. The resulting posterior date densities are irregular and multi-modal. The spatio-temporal Gaussian process 2 model takes account of such irregularities via Monte Carlo simulation. The resultant sea-level curves are scrutinised at a number of locations around the Humber over a selection of time periods. It is hoped that they can provide insight into other areas of sea-level research, and into a broader palaeoclimate framework.

Abstract:
Our mind purpose in this research is to try and understand the mechanisms of apprenticesship. Our wish has beeen to investigate the ways and the conditions of the act of learning but also to examine the methods of formation of both teachers and trainers. We have wished to sketch in fine the bases of a better learning and a better training. The process of training people facing difficulties led us to set the various problems of the act of learning and those of the act of formation in the specific context of alternantive formation, which is the guiding line along the technological and professionnal way. It is important to remind this singular educative way and more particularly alternative formation have been for several years as an alternative proposal to the general and traditional method. Bey and those incitements to give people and to give oneself an alternative formation, incitements sometimes havardsing the charm of a spell, it see med to us that is was pertinent to consider the plus values that alternative formation can bring, precisely as regards the act of learning and the act of training. In that search we started progressively from a prime question : how does one learn in alternative formations ? to proceed towards the following question : what are the conditions required for an alternative formation to facilitate apprrenticesships ? We assume that those formations do not a priori permit to offer to the public they receive an adequate context to apprenticesships or even reapprenticesships. In our research we wish to propose the conceptual frame of an act to learn in alternance, so that alternative formations may lead the learners to success

Thomas, Lindsey Juhl Jean. "Fostering resilience: exploring former foster children's narratives." Diss., University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1775.

Full text
Abstract:
Children placed in foster care are the most at-risk youth group in the U.S., often experiencing negative events and outcomes before, during, and after foster care. Despite the availability of statistical data centered on (former) foster children, little is known about how these individuals make sense of their often negative and rupture-laden experiences. One way that individuals make sense of rupture in life is through narratives. Narratives are important to examine because they allow for better understanding of the experience(s) and what experiences mean to those who have lived through them. Specifically, narratives might also illuminate differences in (former) foster children's emergence from foster care as resilient, or with wellbeing intact. Thus, this study aimed to explore adult, former foster children's narrative sensemaking and whether types of stories told correlate with narrator participants' (self-reported) resilience scores. Using mixed methods, I employed narrative thematic analysis to qualitatively analyze narrative interviews, looking at how participants made sense of rupture experiences. Independent coders conducted a content analysis, coding each story as one of the four emergent types, to allow for quantitative comparisons. A Kruskal-Wallis test revealed that resilience scores differed significantly among story types. Follow-up tests determined that narrators of Thriving after Rupture, in which narrators achieved personally because of foster care-related experiences, and Transformation for Self and Others, in which narrators both achieved personally and assisted others because of past rupture experiences, displayed significantly higher resilience than did narrators of Ongoing Rupture, which framed narrators as stuck in rupture and sensemaking cycles. Narrators of Helping Others and Giving Back, who talked about assisting others in the foster care system because of their own experiences, also trended toward displaying greater resilience than Ongoing Rupture. These results indicate that framing might be as important to wellbeing as lived experiences. Thus, it is important to continue to explore narrative therapy as a means to bolster (former) foster children's resilience.

Abstract:

Abstract:
During the month of November 2017, the President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe was taken into custody by Zimbabwe’s military. This was a move in order to shift the governmental power after which Mugabe after almost 40 years as President of Zimbabwe resigned from his post.   The thesis contains a Ccritical Ddiscourse Aanalysis of articles published by one of the world’s great newspapers during this shift of power. The newspaper analysed is the British newspaper ‘The Guardian’. The analysis studied which characters and major topics are represented in the articles and how they are represented to see what fits inside The Guardian’s news reporting on the final events in the shift of power in Zimbabwe. In order to find these discursive attributes, pictures linked to the articles were analysed, the context in which the events happened as well as the discourse used in the articles from a perspective of orientalism, post-colonialism and ideology. Other theoretical aspects used are framing, representation and critical Critical Ddiscourse Sstudies.   The empirical case in this research project involves three articles collected from T‘the Guardian ’ reaching from the reporting of Mugabe’s firing of his vice President, Emmerson Mnangagwa to the reporting of Robert Mugabe resigning as President of Zimbabwe.   The interest in this study is springing from the normative approach of news media to provide an objective story to the readers while providing the whole picture. With this mission many different challenges come along of orientalist and post-colonial character, as ‘the Guardian’The Guardian is a British newspaper and Zimbabwe being a former British colony.   The results concluded an absence of post-colonial and orientalist representations in the news frames regarding Zimbabwe and its population, the most ideologically charged instances rather revolved around Robert and Grace Mugabe.

Abstract:
As an intern with URS Corporation, I participated in several remediation and wastewater treatment projects during the year 2004. A groundwater remediation project was selected to present in this record of study for my Doctor of Engineering degree not only because I spent more time on it than any other project, but also because it represents the broadness and depth of a typical URS remediation project. In this report, findings from previous environmental investigations were summarized and used for computer modeling and remediation strategy evaluation. Computer models were used to simulate site conditions and assist in remedy design for the site. Current pump-and-treat systems were evaluated by the model under various scenarios. Recommendations were made for the pump-and-treat system to control the contaminant plume. Various remediation technologies were evaluated and compared for their applicability at the site. A combination of on-site remediation and downgradient plume control was chosen as the site remediation strategy. Treatability studies and additional modeling work are needed for the remediation system design and optimization.

Abstract:
Focus of on-going cross-cultural investigation has throughout the time shown that inadequate language skills paired with absence of knowledge of cultural practices and norms within the receiving society would create a number of stress behaviors among immigrants, often manifested as lowered mental health status- depression, anxiety, confusion; feelings of marginality and alienation; psychosomatic symptoms and identity confusion (Berry and Annis, 1988; Greenberg & Greenberg, 1989; Kessler, Turner and House, 1988; Shams and Jackson, 1994; Vega et al., 1986; Vinokur, Price and Caplan, 1991; Winefield, Winefield, Tiggermann and Goldney, 1991). It was further noticed that refugee populations across the world are adapting to the receiving societies in a much slower rate then other migrating groups (Greenberg & Greenberg, 1989), and yet due to sensibilities surrounding research of a refugee population, there are still questions surrounding this process. In addition, it appears that the attempts to demystify acculturation and uncover objective underpinnings of it, has further reduced the current concept undermining validity and reliability of the findings. Therefore need for subjective experience and definition of acculturation, as well as reconsideration of complexity of the phenomenon (acculturation) was recognised by this research. This study was designed to offer a qualitative insight into the acculturative differences within a family unit among refugees from former Yugoslavia. 21 women, recent refugee- arrivals were requested to participate in the open- end interview. In the semi- structured interview the women were asked to give a detailed account of their personal, their partners’ and their children’s experiences concerning the emotional, social, economical, occupational and psychological aspects of their and their family- members’ acculturation processes. The obtained data was analysed through the means of narrative and Erickson’s analytic induction. The results showed that cultural incompatibilities have spread into diverse spheres of living, thus complexity of the acculturation-related problems was acknowledged. The results showed that (1) split families (due to immigration), (2) inability to establish new social ties in the novel environment and (3) decay in professional status were often reported in connection with eroded physical and mental well-being of the participants and their families. The research also looked at cultural diversities, and gender differences, concentrating on concepts of resilience and coping strategies within the acculturative practice. It appears that cognitive restructuring and the ability to “let go” of the previous lives was the best coping mechanism.

Ireton, Shannon Kathleen. "Former rebel groups and the politics of apologies." Thesis, Queen's University Belfast, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.602548.

Full text
Abstract:
Within the field of transitional justice, knowledge of many aspects of post-conflict reconciliation continues to evolve, including the use of public apologies. This thesis considers in particular the role and politics of post-conflict apologies by former rebel groups, attempting to fill a gap in the current literature on political apologies that fails to consider apologies by rebel groups. It provides initial insights into the question, 'why do rebel groups apologise in some cases, but not in others?' This is achieved by comparing three cases - two where rebel group apologies are present, Northern Ireland (Provisional Irish Republican Army) and South Africa (African National Congress), and one where there is no rebel group apology, Cyprus (EOKA) - through three variables, security, politics, and society to determine possible influences on the apology outcome and the motivations of rebel groups to offer an apology, or refuse to apologise. Within each of the independent variables, specific factors are scrutinised and compared to determine their relative influence on the rebel groups' apology outcome. These include factors such as community violence and decommissioning, international influences, public opinion and elections, civil society, symbolism, and reconciliation. Comparative analysis of these factors revealed several motivations behind rebel group apology outcomes. Specifically, I argue that the transition to politics results in rebel groups behaving in a manner similar to that of states in relation to political apologies; that civil society has a stronger influence than formalised truth or reconciliation commissions; that the 'Age of Apology' has normalised the use of political apologies and had a positive socializing effect on rebel groups to offer an apology; and that apologies are used both for the purposes of reconciliation and for political gain. The conclusions of the thesis have implications beyond the specific groups analysed. The large number of societies emerging from civil conflict, grappling to deal with post-conflict trauma often count rebel groups among the relevant stakeholders. The question of how to transition and diffuse these groups will continue to pose dilemmas for policy makers and peace workers, making academic study of rebel group apologies a priority.

Keith, Rebecca Loomis. "Learning as development| Reflections of former Montessori students." Thesis, Saint Mary's College of California, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3641394.

Abstract:
<p> Possible long term effects of previous Montessori education on college age students are relatively unexamined. In this descriptive, exploratory, qualitative study, 13 students who had earlier attended Montessori schools for at least six years were asked to reflect on their just-completed freshman year. Thematic analysis of their in-depth, semi-structured interviews revealed similarities in how they experienced themselves as learners; understood the construction of knowledge, opinion, and truth; experienced themselves as growing and changing; and viewed the influence of their Montessori education. Though their level of epistemological maturity was not measured directly, their responses suggested a more advanced level than usually achieved by comparably aged college students. Their patterns of response also correspond to characteristics Montessori described as the fourth plane of development, which would be achieved by adolescents whose earlier educational experiences had successfully brought them through the first three planes. These findings suggest that further research is needed into the possible long term effects of a Montessori education on individuals as they reach adulthood. Although altering current educational models would be enormously challenging, further examination of this alternative is recommended.</p>

Kelly, Jane Frances. "Narratives of gang desistance amongst former gang members." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/29549.

Full text
Abstract:
Gangs are found all over the world, including South Africa. In Cape Town specifically, gang involvement is a critical problem in need of intervention. Despite this, little research has explored the perspectives of former gang members on leaving and staying out of the gang. Understanding how and why individuals desist from gangs has important implications for policymakers, the criminal justice system, and in the development of effective interventions, which is particularly important in low- and middle-income countries like South Africa, where very little is known about desistance from gangs, and where economic and other conditions that may lead to gang involvement are different from those in high-income countries. Drawing on a narrative theoretical framework as well as the theory of critical realism, this research sought to examine how former South African gang members understand and make sense of their desistance from gang involvement, focusing on exiting the gang life as well as maintaining a reformed lifestyle after exiting, despite the challenges this may present. Two rounds of life history interviews were conducted with twelve former gang members from a Cape Town community with a high prevalence of gangsterism. Thematic narrative analysis was used to analyse the interview data. Findings revealed that the participants’ narratives of desistance focused on a profound transformation in identity in which they moved away from the hardened, stoic gangster identity and embraced a more prosocial identity, such as that of a positive role model in the community. This transformation was a process punctuated with key turning points (such as incarceration or becoming religious) that prompted active reflection on the gang life and contributed to their decision to desist. The participants’ narratives also focused on their agency in the desistance process, which included forming a purposive intention to change their lives, committing to and maintaining this change, in spite of challenges they faced (for example, a relapse into drugs), taking personal responsibility for their pasts and striving for more independence in the future. Importantly, it also involved actively drawing on protective resources (such as meaningful and practical support from loved ones and religious belief systems) and prosocial identities (for example, being a caring husband and father) available to them within their environments, thus illustrating how the desistance process is an interaction between inner and outer resources. Therefore, it is imperative that interventions that assist desisting gangsters are targeted not only on an individual level, but a contextual level too, ensuring that individuals have access to the kinds of resources in their environment that will support their desistance.

Abstract:
In the transmission process of a photography medium, from analog to digital, a phenomenon that occurs at the end of the 20th century, most of the analog photo factories are being shut down. As a result, production of photo equipment dies and centuries-old tradition of analogue photography is disappearing into history. In the case study of Fotokemika factory (1947-2012), once a famous and respectable photo equipment factory during Yugoslavia, later the Croatian Republic, I am showing what this transmission process means on a local and global level. This paper, trough case study of Fotokemika factory, as an example of shut down industrial unite that produced equipment for processing analog photography, is trying to contribute to a better understanding of position of analog photography process and technique in 21st century. The study examines the history of the factory, the achievements in the fields of science, technology, technique, advertisement, design and its influence on developing of analog photography in the territory of Croatia creating criteria for valorization of analog photography heritage. The research aim is to examine how museums like an institution for protection and safeguarding of heritage, especially after the new definition, can give a solution in maintaining industrial heritage in a process of reusing former industrial buildings into museum; RESUMO: Ao longo do processo de transmissão do suporte fotográfico, do suporte analógico ao suporte digital, fenómeno esse que vê a luz no fim do século XX, a maior parte das fábricas de suportes analógicos vêm os seus dias contados.

Tomlinson, E. J. "Former carers' views on assisted dying in dementia." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2013. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1407695/.

Full text
Abstract:
Overview This volume is in three sections. Part 1: The literature review examines the available research into the views of the general public, health professionals, people with dementia and carers towards assisted dying in cases of dementia. It considers the evidence for factors associated with people’s views. Seventeen studies of variable quality met the criteria for the review. Health professionals appear to hold the most restrictive views on assisted dying; however opinions within each population group are divided and associated with factors such as age, ethnicity, gender and religion. The methodological limitations of the reviewed studies are discussed and recommendations are made for further research. Part 2: The empirical paper reports on an exploratory qualitative study of former carers’ views on assisted dying in cases of dementia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 former carers; transcripts were analysed thematically. Whilst support for the right to die with dementia was common, the complexity of assisted dying in cases of dementia was also acknowledged. The motivating factors for and against an assisted death are revealed and former carers’ views about talking with a health professional if contemplating an assisted death are described. Part 3: The critical appraisal is a reflection on the process of designing and executing the research presented in Part 2. It discusses some of the methodological issues which arose during the study before finally attending to the influence of the research on the researcher, which reference to personal reflexivity.
