Abstract:
The formex formulation of the topological configuration, geometry, load and support conditions of self-supporting or free-standing transmission towers is presented. In the formulation, a natural normat coordinate system is used. The tower topology is formulated according to member types and orientations within the tower. The formex formulation is implemented as a preprocessor for a general elasto-plastic nonlinear large displacement analysis program for transmission tower structures. The data generated from the formex formulation is transformed into an AutoLISP file that can be loaded and used by AutoCAD. Throughout the paper, it is assumed that the readers are familiar with the basic concept and terminology used in formex algebra.

Abstract:
In this work, a formex procedure is presented in order to provide a conceptually consistent method of formex formulation in the context of substructure analysis. Grids composed of beams with multiple web openings are treated for which substructuring is well suited. An open web beam can be regarded as an assembly of typical units. Formex formulations are produced for such typical units and for the whole assembly. The concepts of plenices are also employed in order to organise a suitable system for a formex representation of partitioned configurations. Also, a formex function is introduced which makes it possible to generate some distorted configurations from regular patterns. A reader with no familiarity with formex algebra may wish to consult Ref. 2 or Ref. 6 for a brief sketch of formex algebra and Ref. 7 for a quick reference on plenices.

Abstract:
The term ‘configuration’ refers to an arrangement of parts. For example, the elements of a structure constitute a configuration and so do the atoms of a molecule and the components of an electrical network. The most common usage of the term configuration is in reference to geometric compositions that consist of points, lines, surfaces and so on. The term ‘configuration processing’ refers to the skill of dealing with creation and manipulation of configurations. In particular, the term ‘formex configuration processing’ implies configuration processing with the aid of ‘formex algebra’. Formex algebra is evolved to perform processes needed for configuration processing, just as the ordinary algebra is evolved to perform operations needed for creation and manipulation of numerical models. The term ‘formex’ is derived from the word ‘form’ and it is meant to imply a ‘representation of form’. This article has two main objectives. The first objective is to provide a general feeling of how the elements of formex algebra perform configuration processing. This objective is achieved through simple examples, without involvement in too many details. It will be seen that working with parameters is a natural characteristic of formex configuration processing. Thus, a formex solution is, normally, for a class of problems rather than an individual one. This would allow consideration of different variants of a configuration by simply changing the values of the parameters. It will also be seen the ease with which freeforms can be created. The coverage also includes information about ‘Formian’ which is the name of the computer software for formex configuration processing. The second objective of this article is to record the story of the development of formex algebra from the beginnings in the mid-1970s to the middle of the second decade of the 21st century, covering some 40 years of development. Formex configuration processing is an effective and elegant conceptual tool for generation and manipulation of forms. However, there are also other approaches to configuration processing. In particular, there are now a number of highly successful software systems for configuration processing using various tactics. Formex algebra will be a natural complement for these systems.

Abstract:
Computer-aided structural analysis processes are highly dependent on the use of computer graphics. The objective of this work is to evolve techniques that allow structural analysts, designers and architects to work with computer graphics in a convenient manner. The formex approach of data generation is explained through a number of examples. This approach enables data to be generated very conveniently for the purposes of structural analysis. Also, introduced are the main features of an interactive programming language which acts as a vehicle to implement the concepts of formex algebra. An attempt to investigate the possibility of using the concepts of formex graphics in postprocessing stages of structural analysis is presented. This enables output of structural analysis programs to be graphically displayed so that plots of structural configurations can be shown in both their deformed and undeformed shapes. It is also shown that it is possible to employ the concepts of formex graphics in order to produce axial force, shear force, bending moment and torque diagrams in a manner that they can be visualized conveniently.

Abstract:
With the introduction of reliable and high speed computers in the past few decades, together with the demand of today's engineering problems which include the design of large and complex structures, the processes of data generation and organisation present a real challenge. The main theme of this thesis is to develop a new method of structural analysis which is based on the concepts of formices and plenices. This method simplifies the processes of data generation and organisation in engineering design. Formex algebra is a mathematical system that may be used to represent and process any form of configuration. In engineering design, the basic approach is to represent the interconnection pattern of a structural configuration by a formex. This information is then related to other relevant data of the structure which is needed for the analysis by a plenix. A plenix is a mathematical object that can be used to simplify the processes of data organisation and decision making in automated analytical procedures. The mathematics of formices and plenices provide a powerful and versatile tool for representation and processing configurations, and organising information.

Khabbazan, Mehdi Mohammadi. "The renection method for the analysis of spaceframes." Thesis, University of Surrey, 1989. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/847594/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an approximate method for analysis of dense spaceframes. The approach is based on transforming a dense spaceframe into a similar structure with lower density. The reduced structure is analysed in the usual manner and the results are employed to obtain an approximation to the behaviour of the actual structure. To assess the accuracy and limitations of the proposed method, a number of practical examples are analysed. The influence of irregularity of loading and support conditions have also been investigated. A comparison of the results obtained by the method with those obtained by the exact analysis has shown that the accuracy of the method is satisfactory for design purposes. In generating data and organising graphical output for the examples, the concept of formex algebra together with its programming language Formian have been utilised. The application of the method has been extended to composite spaceframes, consisting of skeleton double layer grids combined with concrete slabs. The proposed method is a natural engineering approach. It preserves almost all the particulars of the original structure but allows the analysis to be performed with much smaller systems of simultaneous equations. The method has the potential of being extended in many directions for analysis of other space structures. Also, it would be of interest to extend the idea to the dynamic response calculations and non-linear analysis of spaceframes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis concerns shape matching and shape retrieval. It describes four contributions to thisdomain. The first is an improvement of the k-means method, in order to find the best partition ofvoxels inside a given shape ; these best partitions permit to match shapes using an optimal matchingin a bipartite graph. The second contribution is the fusion of two descriptors, one local, the otherglobal, with the product rule. The third contribution considers the complete graph, the vertices ofwhich are the shapes in the database and the query. Edges are labelled with several distances, one per descriptor. Then the method computes, with linear programming, the convex combinationof distances which maximizes either the sum of the lengths of all shortest paths from the query toall shapes of the database, or the length of the shortest path in the graph from query to the currentshape compared to query. The fourth contribution consists in perturbing the shape query, to make itcloser to shapes in the database, for any given descriptors. This method is massively parallel and amulti-agent architecture is proposed. These methods are compared to classical methods in the field, they achieve better retrieval performances

Abstract:
This dissertation deals with a specific type of corporate remodelling called restructuring. The main hypothesis goes as follows: a corporate restructuring goes through the close linking of mechanics and a mystique setting up a three-element configuration within which myths, rituals and tribes are mutually supportive. In other words, mobilizing change forces happens through a mobilization of meaning buttressed by mediations and mediators who translate it and embody it within what is fundamentally the linking of a (symbolic) legitimacy and an (objective and operational) factuality at the juncture of forces and meaning. The demonstration will unfold through three moments. -first, a review of the existing literature will evidence a certain number of prevailing normative archetypes that refer to the existence of a utopian problemizing focused on radical renewal patterns instead of fixing schemes and this within a specific context where managerial scientism meets a desire of reenchantment. -second, a case study: the restructuring of the jerada coal mine (morocco) by the author between 1992 and 1994. Through a " reflective practitioner" posture and a "reflection in action" stance as inspired by donald schoen, the author reconstructs the composite genealogy of a specific case of restructuring as rooted in symbolic and material terrains, economic and institutional resources, identity-powered and profane levers. At the end of this investigation and the evidencing of a certain number of memories and reactivations related to moroccan history, the author sets to call his method of corporate realignment as a "neo-maraboutic" model of restructuring resulting from interactions and grafts between heterogeneous rationalities: the classical tradition of moroccan maraboutic power, the problematic of coal mining, modernistic and managerial acculturation, islam as background and foreground; -third, a certain number of oblique lights on the basis of two case studies (one initiated by the author and still in progress since 1996: lesieur, the other one dealing with the ratp experience under blanc's management from 1989 to 1992) will allow for a second reading of the jerada experience as well as some theoretical revisions specifically with regard to the so-called political model of corporate transformation. Such cross-confrontations reinforce the main hypothesis of successful corpora

Abstract:
The FFG conducted two calls for the "R&D Infrastructure Funding" programme in 2016 and 2018. The programme was developed to take into account the central role of R&D infrastructure in generating new knowledge and technologies. The assessment of the FFG programme "R&D Infrastructure Funding" is intended to review the central points of the programme format and to support the FFG in making improvements and tightening up the programme design. The assessment focuses on the question of the extent to which the programme in its current form and implementation succeeds in achieving the intended goals. Both the tender modalities and the formal funding conditions and evaluation criteria for the applications will be reviewed.
