Despite the importance of regular physical activity for maintaining health, large proportions of the population are sedentary or inactive, presenting a considerable challenge to public health. It is argued that the best way to increase the activity of those who are least active is through encouraging more everyday activities such as regular walking. There is a large body of research demonstrating that more walkable urban characteristics such as high density, mixed land use, better connections and closer destinations, are positively associated with walking. In this thesis, we study the properties of lossless systems using the concept of quadratic differential forms (QDFs). Based on observation of physical linear lossless systems, we define a lossless system as one for which there exists a QDF known as an energy function that is positive along nonzero trajectories of the system and whose derivative along the trajectories of the system is zero if inputs to the system are made equal to zero. Using this deffnition, we prove that if a lossless system is autonomous, then it is oscillatory. We also give an algorithm whose output is a two-variable polyno

We study sums of squares formulae from the perspective of normed bilinear maps and their Hopf constructions. We begin with the geometric properties of quadratic forms between euclidean spheres. Let F: Sm → Sn be a quadratic form. For every point q in the image, the inverse image F⁻¹ (q) is the intersection of Sm with a linear subspace wq, whose dimension can be determined easily. In fact, for every k ≤ m+1 with nonempty Yk = {q ∈ Sn: dim Wq = k}, the restriction F⁻¹ (Yk) → Yk is a great (k-1) - sphere bundle. Abstract:
<p>Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) is a neuroimaging technique used to study brain functionality to enhance our understanding of the brain. This technique is based on MRI, a painless, noninvasive image acquisition method without harmful radiation. Small local blood oxygenation changes which are reflected as small intensity changes in the MR images are utilized to locate the active brain areas. Radio frequency pulses and a strong static magnetic field are used to measure the correlation between the physical changes in the brain and the mental functioning during the performance of c

Rapid developments in the educational system significantly facilitate the popularisation of education, making education more accessible. The learning process should be systematically analyzed to assist teaching, however, traditional learning systems provide limited support for educators. The learning analytics dashboard is, therefore, becoming a popular tool to provide insights into the learning process by analyzing and interpreting the collected data with effective visualizations. With the purpose of improving pedagogical decision-making, it is of importance to provide a comprehensive overvie

Abstract:
Abstract A cardiorespiratory system is highly regulated via the autonomic nervous system (ANS), whose function can be quantified noninvasively by analyzing electrocardiogram (ECG), blood pressure (BP) and respiration signals. Several conditions and illnesses are linked with imbalance of the ANS. This thesis aimed to develop methods for describing the ANS regulation of a cardiovascular system from short-term cardiorespiratory measurements. More specifically, the role of breathing rate and its effects on traditional frequency domain based cardiovascular indexes describing ANS control is addresse

Abstract:
The dorsal dentate gyrus (DDG) of the hippocampus plays a role in the expression of different forms of flexible behaviour mainly due to its ability to sustain neurogenesis throughout life. In the present thesis, we examined the role that the DDG and its adjacent areas, both collectively referred to as dorsal medial hippocampus (DMH), play in flexible, adaptive behaviour and cognitive processing. We used the neurotoxin, colchicine, to induce lesions of the DDG, which were found to affect neighbouring areas. Thus these lesions will be referred to as lesions of the DMH. In the first experiment, r
