Full textThis thesis identifies threats to, and strengths in, the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) deployment in East African developing country Rwanda, and discusses what effect these characteristics may have on the long-term sustainability of the project. The main data collection method used is interviews, performed during a two month field study in the Rwandan capital of Kigali. By using a framework based in the field of technology transfer, a comprehensive picture of the project is presented, covering the whole process from early decision making and acquisition to the potential assimilation and development of the technology. The most important strength in the OLPC project has proven to be a strong will and commitment of the local organization as well as the country’s government to see it through. A well-adapted organization of support and technical assistance has also proven to work well so far. However, as the project increase in size over the next few years, several threats are also identified. These threats include a lack of financial means and skilled personnel, strong technical dependency on the OLPC organization and insufficient plans for the future expansion. We argue that the project would become more sustainable if expansions were to cease and a larger focus was put on securing the current deployments.

This qualitative study examined the psychological demands of Formula One Racing, and the psychological skills former Formula One drivers utilized to meet those demands. The participants were nine former drivers, from six different countries, who have competed in at least one Formula One World Drivers Championship grand prix. The qualitative data were gathered using a semi-structured interview framework, developed by the researcher, to explore the psychological skills established from other validated psychological skills questionnaires, such as the Test of Performance Strategies, (Thomas, Murphy, & Hardy, 1999). Eight of the interviews were done via Skype, and one interview was performed in person. The interviews were transcribed verbatim, and then sent to the participants to make any edits or corrections. Once the transcriptions were approved, the data were coded by the researcher using constant comparative methods as described in Charmaz (2006). Three phases of coding resulted in four themes and 14 sub-themes. The themes that emerged include: (1) Applied Sport Psychology in Formula One, (2) Psychological Skills, (3) Uncontrollable Aspects of Competition, (4) Career Components. Drivers used various psychological skills in a focused effort to aid their performance. Drivers discussed the important role psychology plays in their sport, and the psychological resources available to them during their career. Drivers discussed the danger element of their competition, and how they and their competitors managed the fear associated with racing. The drivers in this study competed in an era that was much more dangerous than the current era of Formula One racing (Barnes, 2013). The drivers' use of psychological skills, and perceptions of sport psychology, may guide consultants working with race car drivers and those working with other populations that have similar psychological and physical demands.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The experimental observation of the quantum Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas posed an intriguing question to theorists: Why is the quantization of conductance so precise, given the imperfections of the measured samples? The question was answered a few years later, when a connection was uncovered between the quantum Hall effect and topological quantities associated with the band structure of the material in which it is observed. The Hall conductance was revealed to be an integer topological invariant, implying its robustness to certain perturbations. The topological theory went further than explaining only the usual integer quantum Hall effect in a perpendicular magnetic field. Soon it was realized that it also applies to certain systems in which the total magnetic flux is zero. Thus it is possible to have a quantized Hall effect without Landau levels. We study a carbon nanotube in a magnetic field perpendicular to its axial direction. Recent studies suggest that the application of an electric field parallel to the magnetic field would induce a gap in the electronic spectrum of a previously metallic carbon nanotube. Despite the quasi onedimensional nature of the carbon nanotube, the gapped state supports a quantum Hall effect and is associated with a non zero topological invariant. This result is revealed when an additional magnetic field is applied parallel to the axis of the carbon nanotube. If the flux due to this magnetic field is varied by one flux quantum, exactly one electron is transported between the ends of the carbon nanotube.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die eksperimentele waarneming van die kwantum Hall effek in ’n twee-dimensionele elektron gas laat ’n interessante vraag aan teoretiese fisikuste: Waarom sou die kwantisasie van die geleiding so presies wees al bevat die monsters, waarop die meetings gedoen word, onsuiwerhede? Hierdie vraag word ’n paar jaar later geantwoord toe ’n konneksie tussen die kwantum Hall effek en topologiese waardes, wat verband hou met die bandstruktuur van die monster, gemaak is. Dit is aan die lig gebring dat die Hall geleiding ’n heeltallige topologiese invariante is wat die robuustheid teen sekere steurings impliseer. Die topologiese teorie verduidelik nie net die gewone kwantum Hall effek wat in ’n loodregte magneetveld waargeneem word nie. Dit is ook moontlik om ’n kwantum Hall effek waar te neem in sekere sisteme waar die totale magneetvloed nul is. Dit is dus moontlik om ’n gekwantiseerde Hall effek sonder Landau levels te hˆe. Ons bestudeer ’n koolstofnanobuis in ’n magneetveld loodreg tot die aksiale rigting. Onlangse studies dui daarop dat die toepassing van ’n elektriese veld parallel aan die magneetveld ’n gaping in die elektroniese spektrum van ’n metaliese koolstofnanobuis induseer. Ten spyte van die een-dimensionele aard van die koolstofnanobuis ondersteun die gapings-toestand steeds ’n kwantum Hall effek en hou dit verband met ’n nie-nul topologiese invariante. Hierdie resultaat word openbaar wanneer ’n bykomende magneetveld parallel tot die as van die koolstofnanobuis toegedien word. Indien die vloed as gevolg van hierdie magneetveld met een vloedkwantum verander word, word presies een elektron tussen die twee kante van die koolstofnanobuis vervoer.

Full textComposite materials as carbon fiber reinforced polymer are often used in many industrial fields, specially where lightweight design is the prerogative to extract performance from structural components, some examples are automotive, aerospace, or sports equipment structures. Anisotropy is the main feature of composites materials, on one side this property is cleverly used to obtain a remarkable performance/weight ratio on, but on the other side there's a complex stress state to evaluate. The present contribution deals with the evaluation of the normal component of interlaminar stress in curved composite laminates subject to remote loads. Although those stress components are usually smaller than their in-plane counterparts, the comparably limited adhesion strength of the interlaminar interfaces causes the experience of delaminations, specially in curved laminates, resulting in reduced stiffness and strength of the structural component, and even a higher probability of failure or need for premature component substitution. A Finite Element (FE) model is nowadays usually required during the design phase in order to evaluate composite components behavior by a stress and stiffness point of view. Shell finite elements models are often used for composite components due to their computational efficiency and modeling flexibility mixed with discrete accuracy in terms of displacements results and in-plane stresses estimation. Nevertheless, the customary shell finite element formulation neglects the contribution of the Interlarminar Normal Stress (ILNS) component to internal energy and to the stress state characterization. A good estimation of what is the interlaminar stress state of a composite component could be obtained with solid FE models, or mixed 2D/3D FE models, or cohesive elements and surfaces. But a model developed for post-processing and implemented with linear shell element types may represent a good opportunity to maintain the FE model complexity at reasonable levels. The model for the evaluation of ILTS under investigation requires information about curvatures that can be obtained by a simple shell FE model, and it is applied on a four point bending test case which is usually adopted for ILNS evaluation of composite components. The experimental results and the model results are compared and a solid FE model is added to the comparison. Furthermore, the applicability of the model on a more complex matrix is investigated, using as a case study a Formula One front wing. A test case consisting in a static loading is evaluated and also a dynamic load case involving a modal transient analysis.

Full textLightweight concrete has been the subject of several studies towards the development of new building materials. Emphasis has been given on the particle size effect and nature of aggregates used as raw materials. The present study includes an analysis of the materials that make this kind of concrete, analyzes of mechanical properties such as compressive and tensile strength, in addition to assessments of the interface concrete aggregate/matrix interface, porosity and absorption profile of chloride ions in lightweight concrete based on expanded clay. The experiments were carried out by molding cylindrical samples 100 mm in diameter and 200 mm in height. The dosage experiments were performed without additives or with the addition of minerals: (T1) 1: 2.01: 1.10: 0.78 (T2) 1: 2.00: 1.32 : 0.62 - (T3) 1 :1.93 :1.54: 0.47 (cement : sand : expanded clay 0500 : expanded clay 1506).The water to cement ratio was set to 0.43. Expanded clay minerals with different average particle sizes were used, i.e., 9.5 mm/0500 and 19 mm/1506. The larger aggregate was coated by a glassy layer, yielding lower water absorption characteristics to the concrete. The results showed that the use of light expanded clay aggregates is a technically interesting solution to the production of lightweight concrete for construction applications

Incluem-se neste estudo a altera??o de tra?os e dos materiais que comp?em esse concreto, analisando altera??es nas propriedades mec?nicas como resist?ncia ? compress?o e tra??o por compress?o diametral, al?m da interface agregado/matriz, porosidade e perfil de absor??o de ?ons cloreto no concreto leve ? base de argila expandida. Os experimentos foram realizados atrav?s de moldagem de corpos de prova cil?ndricos, com 100 mm de di?metro e 200 mm de altura. A dosagem experimental foi efetuada sem aditivos ou adi??es minerais, nos tra?os unit?rios em massa: (T1) 1 : 2,01 : 1,10 : 0,78 (T2) 1 : 2,00 : 1,32 : 0,62 - (T3) 1 : 1,93 : 1,54 : 0,47 (cimento : areia : argila expandida 0500 : argila expandida 1506); fixando-se a rela??o ?gua/cimento em 0,43. Para tanto, utilizou-se como agregado gra?do uma argila expandida, nas gradua??es 9,5 mm/0500 e 19 mm/1506. A argila de gradua??o maior era revestida com uma camada vitrificada, o que propiciou menor absor??o de ?gua pelo concreto. Os resultados mostraram que a utiliza??o da argila expandida como agregado leve ? uma solu??o tecnicamente vi?vel na produ??o de concreto leve para Constru??o Civil.

Full textIn order to have some say and to scrutinise the government all member states of the EU today has established an institution within their national parliaments, the Committee of European Affairs. This institution, however, has very different rights and regulations depending on the country it is established in. This study uses two rather similar countries, Sweden and Denmark, and investigates what differences and similarities the two committees show.
By constructing a comparative case study of four units of analysis, the governments and committees of European Affairs in Sweden and Denmark, the formal and informal power relationship between government and committee in each country were studied in order to determine similarities and differences and whether the committee had an impact on the governments’ EU policies. Further they were compared, assessing whether the Danish Committee of European Affairs was more powerful than its Swedish counterpart because of its legal basis in an EU document.
The theoretical framework was built on empirical institutionalism and Lukes’ first and second dimension of power. The similarities and differences were accounted for and compared. In conclusion, the Danish Committee of European Affairs has more formal power than its Swedish counterpart but regarding informal power the Swedish Committee of European Affairs has a slight advantage. Both committees have an impact on the way their government handle negotiations with the EU.

Full textThe aim of this thesis was to examine possible improvements in the inventory management and procedure of ordering at Bygg Ole Saltsjö-Boo. A combination of aspects from both Systems Engineering and Industrial Engineering and Management has been used. In the report, a Guaranteed Service-Level model based on historical data of sales in combination with relevant theories about inventory carrying cost has been applied. The study was limited to specific chosen products with high sales from two selected suppliers of Bygg Ole. All these products in the study except one experienced low seasonal variety in demand. Furthermore special consideration was taken to service level, cost of capital and variability of demand. The result was that an implementation of the model would yield lower inventory levels and therefore lower carrying costs of inventory. The conclusion from the report was that the model could be implemented, although with possibly high administrative costs in the beginning. Bygg Ole also has a possibility of using an ordering system based on the mathematical GSL-model (Guaranteed Service-Level) in combination with forecasts of demand conducted by the sales department of Bygg Ole. This could potentially increase precision in the inventory management. The current inventory carrying charge is compounded relatively low and therefore decreases the calculated savings from implementing the model. If the carrying charge would be higher, the benefits of implementation would be more evident. The recommendation for Bygg Ole is to apply the recommended GSL-model in combination with a demand forecast planning system on a few selected products and then evaluate the result.

Full textIn this thesis, we study algorithms for a problem of finding relations in one or several variables. It generalizes that of computing a solution to a system of linear modular equations over a polynomial ring, including in particular the computation of Hermite- Padéapproximants and bivariate interpolants. Rather than a single solution, we aim at computing generators of the solution set which have good properties. Precisely, the input of our problem consists of a finite-dimensional module given by the action of the variables on its elements, and of some elements of this module; the goal is to compute a Gröbner basis of the module of syzygies between these elements. In terms of linear algebra, the input describes a matrix with a type of Krylov structure, and the goal is to compute a compact representation of a basis of the nullspace of this matrix. We propose several algorithms in accordance with the structure of the multiplication matrices which specify the action of the variables. In the case of a Jordan matrix, we accelerate the computation of multivariate interpolants under degree constraints; our result for a Frobenius matrix leads to a faster algorithm for computing normal forms of univariate polynomial matrices. In the case of several dense matrices, we accelerate the change of monomial order for Gröbner bases of multivariate zero-dimensional ideals

Resumo: O objetivo desta pesquisa é reconstruir a trajetória de jovens de camadas populares, analisando suas experiências de escolarização, educação não formal, inserção no mercado de trabalho, assim como as expectativas quanto ao futuro. Metodologicamente, a pesquisa trabalha com história oral registrando as múltiplas visões sobre o passado que permitem construir ou reconstruir os processos identitários de um grupo de jovens da periferia urbana do distrito de Sousas em Campinas, no Estado de São Paulo. Os jovens entrevistados foram selecionados dentre aqueles que tiveram participação no projeto Educação Não Formal, Memória e Cidadania: os Distritos de Campinas/SP e nas oficinas de educação não formal desenvolvidas, em 2005, pelo Centro de Memória da Unicamp (CMU) e que continuam ligados à organização não governamental Centro Comunitário Irmãos André (Cecoia), localizado no distrito de Sousas (Campinas, Estado de São Paulo). Estes jovens, oriundos de grupos sociais de baixa renda, habitam espaços urbanos degradados, têm percursos escolares dispares, com inserção intermitente no mercado de trabalho, sonham em poder ter empregos estáveis e decentes, isto é, trabalho que seja portador de sentido, qualificado. Também sonham em continuar estudando, como possibilidade de mobilidade social e de conquista de uma profissão. Finalmente, a pesquisa evidencia que a metodologia da história oral possibilita transformações não só no pesquisador, mas também nos sujeitos pesquisados.
Abstract: This present research aims to reconstruct the trajectory of the lower classes youth by means of analyzing not only their schooling experiences, non-formal education, insertion in the work market, but also their expectations to the future. The research is carried out using the oral history, recording the multiple views about the past which allows to construct and reconstruct the identity processes of a youth group from the urban suburb of Sousas in the city of Campinas, State of São Paulo. The interviewed youths were selected from the ones who attended the project Non Formal Education, Memory and Citizenship: the Districts of Campinas/SP and in the non formal education workshops carried out in 2005 by Centro de Memória da Unicamp (Memory Center of Unicamp - CMU) and are still linked to the non governmental organization Centro Comunitário Irmãos André (Cecoia), located in the district of Sousas (Campinas, State of São Paulo). These youths coming from lower income social groups live in degraded urban places, where the routes to school are calamitous, with intermittent insertion in the work market, dreaming of getting stable and decent jobs, that means, significant and qualified job. They also dream about continuing studying as a possibility of social mobility and achievement in getting a job. Ultimately, the research evidences that the oral history methodology allows transformation not only to the individual subjected to this research but also to the researchers.

Full textThe present article focuses on the educational actions, and relationship practices on the part of “Mães e Pais de Santo”, who are frequenters of the Houses of Àse, and on gender relations. Results were obtained by means of visits and interviews carried out from December, 2013 to February, 2014. During this period, the researcher spent three weeks with the House of Àse’s members. She took part in rituals, as well as on their preparation, including the initiation process of Ìyáwó. Throughout this experience formal and informal dialogues were exchanged among the houses’ members. Observations yielded unexpected answers to the questions posed. The study investigated specific institutions of the AfroBrazilian religion through verbal reports from Pais, Mães and filhos de Santo. Methods, the teaching of culture, the doctrine and gender relations were analyzed, as well as their influence on the process of “being” and “doing” in the context of the Houses of Àse. Bearing that in mind, and given the investigative character of this study; one searched for information about the interviewed, as well as their ancestors’ religious past and origins amongst other background information.

Full textThis is a study of a partnership between the Municipal Secretariat of Citizenship, Welfare and Social Inclusion (SMCAIS), a nongovernmental organization (NGO) and a public school in a town in the state of S?o Paulo (SP) . This partnership is developed through socio-educational activities for children and male adolescents, aged between 6 and 14 years, against the school schedule. The overall objective is to identify as non-formal education has been conceived and proposed within this partnership. Specifically, it aims to examine what they are and who should receive these socio-educational; discuss the presence of instruments and valuation models, both of public policy interest in the field of non-formal education and, finally, to identify the ( s) form (s) of existence of dialogue between the various bodies that compose this public assistance policy. The research methodology consists of: (i) review of key concepts such as non-formal education, evaluation, non-governmental organization, public and social policies, (ii) research on documentary material relating to the partnership, especially SMCAIS and NGOs (Resolution No. 01/2009 municipal, annual management reports, news articles, bylaws, work plans for 2009 and 2010 annual technical report of 2009 activities, organization chart) and (iii) semi-structured interviews with one representative from each of the institutions that make up this partnership (the educational coordinator of the NGO, a psychologist at the City Office and vice director of the school). We used a qualitative approach and the empirical material has been reviewed and organized according to categories constructed along the analytical process. As final results, we found that the non-formal education in our case, seems to be designed in ways contradictory, since while he assumed the defense speech of social transformation, in practice this character is not evident. These contradictions were analyzed in so-called socio-educational activities, forms of dialogue established between the institutions and instruments of evaluation. With regard to assessment procedures used were able to identify weaknesses and limitations, when it is adopted as reference the concept of formative evaluation: the tools are focused on the bureaucratic, technical, financial and quantitative development of the project, and are is centralized by a single institution, the SMCAIS. We believe that this research will bring significant contributions to advancing the discussions on educational concepts present in the forms of partnership between state public sector and private sector, from a broad view of education.
Trata-se de um estudo sobre uma parceria entre a Secretaria Municipal de Cidadania, Assist?ncia e Inclus?o Social (SMCAIS), uma organiza??o n?o-governamental (ONG) e uma escola p?blica estadual de uma cidade do interior do estado de S?o Paulo (SP). Resumo: Este estudo teve como objetivo conhecer e analisar o cotidiano dos trabalhos desenvolvidos por uma importante e conhecida ONG (organização não-governamental) de São Paulo, a Associação Meninos do Morumbi, para retirar possíveis implicações de sua metodologia de trabalho para a educação formal, de modo que os êxitos por ela obtidos em termos educacionais apontassem caminhos e/ ou alternativas para a melhora da qualidade do ensino nas nossas escolas. Para a escrita desta dissertação recorri a diferentes linguagens, dentre as quais destaco a linguagem literária, através de crônicas sobre minha vivência na Associação, e a linguagem plástica, através de códigos ilustrativos. Além disso, em anexo há um CD Rom que ilustra o ambiente acadêmico em que este trabalho foi defendido. Trata-se de uma mostra artística que se concretizou a partir da interpretação do conteúdo do trabalho por uma artista plástica. A intenção de apresentar este estudo rompendo as formas usuais adotadas pela Universidade, tem a ver com a pesquisa no/ do cotidiano e com a confluência que quis fazer entre várias linguagens para abordar um mesmo assunto, no caso a educação, através de outra escrita que ¿não seja o seja o aprisionamento e a morte das significações¿ (AMORIM, 2004, p). A vivência no cotidiano desta ONG mostrou que mesmo que se parta do pressuposto de que a educação não-formal é complementar à educação formal, que seus objetivos são diferentes, ambas devem buscar a construção de um fazer próprio, local, atrelado a uma visão de ensino inovadora
Abstract:This study aimed at knowing and analyzing the day-to-day work developed by an important and well known NGO (non-governmental organization) from São Paulo, the Associação de Meninos do Morumbi - Boys Association of Morumbi, in order to withdraw possible implications from its working methodology for the formal education, so that the success they have reached in educational terms could indicate ways and/or alternatives to improving the quality of teaching in our schools. For the writing of this dissertation different kinds of language were used, among which the literary language, through narratives of my experience in the Association, and the plastic language, through illustrative codes . Besides that, there is an attached CD Rom which illustrates the academic environment in which this work was carried out. It regards an art exhibition that was made real from the interpretation of this work¿s content made by a fine artist. The intention of presenting this study by breaking with the usual forms adopted by the University, has to do with the research in / of the day-t0-day life and with the confluence of several kinds of language to approach the same subject, in this case education, through a different kind of writing that ¿ is not the imprisonment and death of the significations¿ (AMORIM, 2004) The experience in the day-to-day life of this NGO showed that even when one assumes that the non formal education is complementary to the formal education, and that their objectives are different, both must aim at building their own, local way of doing things, coupled with an innovative vision of teaching

Full textIn view of the low level of literacy among students of elementary and middle schools in Brazil and, meanwhile, the astonishing growth of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) working in the educational field in recent decades, this work tries to establish a connection between those two faces of education in Brazil. We intend to understand the dynamics and influence of NGOs in Brazil, and more specifically, in the field of reading for the development of literacy. Therefore, we did a qualitative study with ethnographic characteristics founded, above all, in remarks made at the field of the activities we saw, which later were examined/analyzed using the reading conceptions proposed by the psycholinguistics scholars (Smith, 1989, 1999) and the Aesthetics of Reception scholars (Jauss, 2002). In this way, we hopefully wish to contribute to the many studies on reading and, in particular, to move forward with these new educational possibilities that are, today, presented by the civil society which is searching for alternative solutions to a problem that has been worrying educators for decades in Brazil. Our main hypothesis would be that public schools could benefit themselves and improve the level of literacy of their students, as well as expand the number of proficient readers / competent, if they could establish a partnership with institutions of civil society / NGOs who already have a consistent project. Thus, by means of an exchange of ideas and experiences, the non-governmental educational institutions could contribute to the development of the quality of our public school, without, however, replace it in any way, leaving what is the governmet responsibility for the government itself.

Ce travail s inscrit dans le cadre théorique de l Analyse du Discours (AD) française de base énonciative, qui voit la langue comme étant opaque et polysémique et les discours comme des pratiques discursives qui s établissent et se matérialisent dans les dires et les actions, obéissant à des systèmes sémantiques définis historiquement et socialement (cf. MAINGUENEAU, [1984] 2008). Plus spécifiquement, cette recherche a comme base principale la proposition théorico-méthodologique d Alice Krieg-Planque (2003; 2010) sur la notion de formule discursive, qui instrumentalise l analyse de la circulation et de la production de sens de syntagmes qui, linguistiquement figés, se révèlent, dans leurs usages, des lieux de tension, des points de convergence sur diverses questions sociales débattues dans l espace publique. De manière complémentaire, des lectures parallèles dans d autres disciplines contribuèrent à l analyse et à l interprétation des données, parmi lesquelles nous relevons celles liées à la Nouvelle Géographie de Milton Santos (1994; 2000) et ses réflexions sur ce qui est tangent à la période technico-scientifique informationnelle et à l importance des techniques et des pratiques dans notre conception de temps, d espace et, enfin, de société. Nous cherchons à retracer le parcours de ―cultura de paz‖ dans l espace publique brésilien depuis sa genèse institutionnelle jusqu à nos jours, en passant par les conditions de production qui permirent son émergence en 1989, lors du Congrès International sur la Paix dans l Esprit des Hommes, organisé par l UNESCO à Yamoussoukro (Côte d Ivoire), et en vérifiant sa consolidation et son fonctionnement en tant que formule discursive durant la période connue comme étant la Décennie Internationale de la Promotion d'une Culture de la Non-violence et de la Paix au Profit des Enfants du Monde (2001-2010 - ONU). Ainsi, nous souhaitons montrer comment un effet de consensus est produit dans la surface linguistique d un syntagme qui, en circulant, est mobilisé par diverses interprétations qui partent majoritairement du sème central ―vivre ensemble‖ (des personnes, des religions, des partenaires sexuels, avec la nature, etc.). Comme point de départ, nous avons fait un recensement de ses occurrences dans les journaux Folha de S.Paulo, O Estado de S. Paulo et Brasil de Fato, diffusés à l échelle nationale, vérifiant ensuite une circulation plus expressive via une vaste recherche réalisée sur des moteurs de recherche, parmi lesquels principalement Google Search décision qui impliqua des considérations d ordre méthodologique qui firent partie de la recherche. Il convient de souligner que nous considérons plus important la diversité de sources plutôt que la quantité et la répétition d occurrences, considérant les cas de plus grande dispersion comme indices importants de la propagation sémantique de ―cultura de paz‖dans l interdiscours et, par conséquent, de sa condition de formule discursive. De cette manière, nous analysons les différentes interprétations qui caractérisent les discours d acteurs sociaux qui mobilisèrent le syntagme, largement utilisé lors de rencontres et dans des documents internationaux et nationaux, englobant diverses questions politiques et sociales, cherchant à vérifier les pratiques qui le figent et qui sont, en même temps, instituées par lui-même, dans un paradoxe constitutif.
Este trabalho se inscreve no quadro teórico da Análise do Discurso (AD) francesa de base enunciativa, que vê a língua como constitutivamente opaca e polissêmica e os discursos como práticas discursivas que se estabelecem e se materializam nos dizeres e nas ações, obedecendo a sistemas semânticos histórica e socialmente definidos (cf. MAINGUENEAU, [1984] 2008). Mais especificamente, tem como base principal a proposta teórico-metodológica de Alice Krieg-Planque (2003; 2010) acerca da noção fórmula discursiva, instrumentalizadora da análise da circulação e da produção de sentidos de sintagmas que, linguisticamente cristalizados, mostram-se, em seus usos, como lugares de tensão, pontos de convergência de questões sociais diversas debatidas no espaço público. De maneira complementar, contribuíram para a análise e a interpretação dos dados leituras paralelas de outras disciplinas, dentre as quais destacamos as referentes à Geografia Nova de Milton Santos (1994; 2000) em suas considerações no que tange ao período técnico-científico informacional e à importância das técnicas e das práticas em nossa concepção de tempo, de espaço e, enfim, de sociedade. Buscamos rastrear o percurso de ―cultura de paz‖ no espaço público brasileiro desde sua gênese institucional, passando pelas condições de produção que permitiram sua emergência em 1989, no Congresso Internacional sobre a Paz na Mente dos Homens, organizado pela UNESCO em Yamoussoukro (Costa do Marfim), e verificando sua consolidação e seu funcionamento como fórmula discursiva durante o período que ficou conhecido como Década Internacional de uma Cultura de Paz e Não Violência para as Crianças do Mundo (2001-2010 - ONU) até o momento atual, a fim de mostrar como é produzido um efeito de consenso na superfície linguística de um sintagma que, ao circular, é convocado por interpretações diversas que partem majoritariamente do sema central "convivência" (entre pessoas, com a natureza, entre as religiões, entre parceiros sexuais etc.). Como ponto de partida, fizemos um levantamento das ocorrências desse termo nos jornais Folha de S.Paulo, O Estado de S. Paulo e Brasil de Fato, de abrangência nacional, verificando posteriormente uma circulação mais expressiva do sintagma com uma vasta pesquisa realizada em buscadores, dentre os quais, destacadamente, o Google Search decisão que implicou considerações de ordem metodológica que fizeram parte da pesquisa. Cabe enfatizar que consideramos mais importante a diversidade de fontes do que a quantidade e a repetição de ocorrências, entendendo os casos de maior dispersão como indícios importantes do espraiamento semântico de ―cultura de paz‖ no interdiscurso e, portanto, de sua condição de fórmula discursiva. Desse modo, analisamos as diferentes interpretações que caracterizam os discursos de atores sociais que mobilizaram o sintagma, amplamente utilizado em encontros e documentos internacionais e nacionais, abrangendo questões políticas e sociais diversas, procurando verificar as práticas que o cristalizam e que são, ao mesmo tempo, por ele instituídas, num paradoxo constitutivo.

Full textThe goal of this thesis was to study definability questionsabout finite-state transducers and in particular two-waytransducers. It is known that two-way transducers cover a larger classof transductions than one-way transducers. Then the first question wetackled is the one-way definability problem: is it possible torealize a given two-way transduction by a one-way transducer? Thisproblem was shown to be decidable for functionaltransducers (we also show as a side result that one-way definability becomes undecidable for non-functional transducers) but the decision procedure had non-elementary complexity.We proposed a characterization of one-way definability thatallows us to decide it in double-exponential space, and provide anequivalent one-way transducer of triple-exponential size. We firststudied this question for a restricted class, namely sweepingtransducers, for which the decision procedure and the construction ofthe one-way transducer take one less exponential. For suchtransducers, our procedure is optimal in the sense that we have shownthat there exists a family of functions that are one-way definable andfor which an equivalent one-way transducer requires doubly exponentialsize.The study of sweeping transducers raised other definability questions: Is a given transducer equivalent to some sweeping transducer? And to some sweeping transducer that performs at most k passes? We showed that those questions are decidable and the decision procedure, as well as the equivalent transducer, have the same complexity as in the one-way case. Moreover, as we have shown that there exists a bound on the number of passes required to realize a transduction by a sweeping transducer, we managed to obtain a procedure to minimize the number of passes of a sweeping transducer.Finally we tried to characterize sweeping transducers in other models for regular transductions such as Streaming String transducers (SST) and MSO transductions. As we obtained an equivalence between the number of passes of a sweeping transducer and the number of registers of the equivalent SST we provided a minimization procedure for the number of registers of a large class of SST's. To conclude, our work allowed us to provide a good overall understanding of the definability questions between the models for regular transductions and in particular regarding the resources, whether it is the number of passes (and of course one-way definability is crucial in that aspect) or the number of registers

Full textThe present study investigates lexical similarity perceptions by students of Swedish as a foreign language (L3) with a good yet non-native proficiency in English (L2). The general theoretical framework is provided by studies in transfer of learning and its specific instance, transfer in language acquisition.
It is accepted as true that all previous linguistic knowledge is facilitative in developing proficiency in a new language. However, a frequently reported phenomenon is that students see similarities between two systems in a different way than linguists and theoreticians of education do. As a consequence, the full facilitative potential of transfer remains unused.
The present research seeks to shed light on the similarity perceptions with the focus on the comprehension of a written text. In order to elucidate students’ views, a form involving similarity judgements and multiple choice questions for formally similar items has been designed, drawing on real language use as provided by corpora. 123 forms have been distributed in 6 groups of international students, 4 of them studying Swedish at Level I and 2 studying at Level II.
The test items in the form vary in the degree of formal, semantic and functional similarity from very close cognates, to similar words belonging to different word classes, to items exhibiting category membership and/or being in subordinate/superordinate relation to each other, to deceptive cognates. The author proposes expected similarity ratings and compares them to the results obtained. The objective measure of formal similarity is provided by a string matching algorithm, Levenshtein distance.
The similarity judgements point at the fact that intermediate similarity values can be considered problematic. Similarity ratings between somewhat similar items are usually lower than could be expected. Besides, difference in grammatical meaning lowers similarity values significantly even if lexical meaning nearly coincides. Thus, the obtained results indicate that in order to utilize similarities to facilitate language learning, more attention should be paid to underlying similarities.

Full textIn this work, we have introduced the underlying concept of PUFEM and the basic formulation related to the Helmholtz equation in a bounded domain. The plane wave enrichment process of PUFEM variables was shown and explained in detail. The main idea is to include a priori knowledge about the local behavior of the solution into the finite element space by using a set of wave functions that are solutions to the partial differential equations. In this study, the use of plane waves propagating in various directions was favored as it leads to efficient computing algorithms. In addition, we showed that the number of plane wave directions depends on the size of the PUFEM element and the wave frequency both in 2D and 3D. The selection approaches for these plane waves were also illustrated. For 3D problems, we have investigated two distribution schemes of plane wave directions which are the discretized cube method and the Coulomb force method. It has been shown that the latter allows to get uniformly spaced wave directions and enables us to acquire an arbitrary number of plane waves attached to each node of the PUFEM element, making the method more flexible.In Chapter 3, we investigated the numerical simulation of propagating waves in two dimensions using PUFEM. The main priority of this chapter is to come up with an Exact Integration Scheme (EIS), resulting in a fast integration algorithm for computing system coefficient matrices with high accuracy. The 2D PUFEM element was then employed to solve an acoustic transmission problem involving porous materials. Results have been verified and validated through the comparison with analytical solutions. Comparisons between the Exact Integration Scheme (EIS) and Gaussian quadrature showed the substantial gain offered by the EIS in terms of CPU time.A 3D Exact Integration Scheme was presented in Chapter 4, in order to accelerate and compute accurately (up to machine precision) of highly oscillatory integrals arising from the PUFEM matrix coefficients associated with the 3D Helmholtz equation. Through convergence tests, a criteria for selecting the number of plane waves was proposed. It was shown that this number only grows quadratically with the frequency thus giving rise to a drastic reduction in the total number of degrees of freedoms in comparison to classical FEM. The method has been verified for two numerical examples. In both cases, the method is shown to converge to the exact solution. For the cavity problem with a monopole source located inside, we tested two numerical models to assess their relative performance. In this scenario where the exact solution is singular, the number of wave directions has to be chosen sufficiently high to ensure that results have converged. In the last Chapter, we have investigated the numerical performances of the PUFEM for solving 3D interior sound fields and wave transmission problems in which absorbing materials are present. For the specific case of a locally reacting material modeled by a surface impedance. A numerical error estimation criteria is proposed by simply considering a purely imaginary impedance which is known to produce real-valued solutions. Based on this error estimate, it has been shown that the PUFEM can achieve accurate solutions while maintaining a very low computational cost, and only around 2 degrees of freedom per wavelength were found to be sufficient. We also extended the PUFEM for solving wave transmission problems between the air and a porous material modeled as an equivalent homogeneous fluid. A simple 1D problem was tested (standing wave tube) and the PUFEM solutions were found to be around 1% error which is sufficient for engineering purposes
