Full textCross-docking is a strategy originally introduced to optimize operations inside a warehouseas part of the optimization of the Supply Chain. Like traditional warehouses, productsare collected from numerous freight yards such that suppliers, factories, manufactures, etc., usingtrucks, and are moved towards processing centers named cross-docks. At cross-dock yard, productsfirst get unloaded on inbound dock doors. Afterwards, they are sorted according to theirdestinations and are immediately transferred, using handling devices, to appropriate outbounddock doors to be sometimes consolidated with other products of the same destination and arereloaded into shipping trucks. Unlike traditional warehouse where storage period of productsis indefinite, for cross-dock, goods are unloaded and reloaded the same day without waiting intemporary storage area or can wait less than one day. In this PhD thesis, we study an NP-hardoptimization problem raised by cross-dock referred to “Cross-dock Door Assignment Problem(CDAP)”. The CDAP consists in assignment of incoming and outgoing trucks to inbound andoutbound dock doors of cross-dock, respectively. The goal is to minimize the total transportationcost inside the cross-dock. The standard quadratic formulation of the CDAP includes theGeneralized Assignment Problem as subproblem. In this dissertation, we perform an extensivecross-docking literature review. Then, we carry out a broad analysis of the standard quadraticformulation as well as the standard linearization of the CDAP. From this in-deph study, wepropose several new non standard Mixed Integer Linear Programming models for the CDAP. Todetect the best linear model among those we propose and those existing, we compare the performanceof these models on instances proposed in the literature. We next propose a LagrangianRelaxation approach to produce the best new lower bounds to optimal solution value. This LagrangianRelaxation is applied to the model that produces the best LP relaxation bounds. TheLagrangian dual is solved using a subgradient algorithm. According to the experiments it seemsthat large-scale instances cannot be solved with an exact method in reasonable running times andmemory requirements. Thus, we propose and implement two heuristics based on “ProbabilisticTabu Search” to operate efficiently with larger instances of the CDAP. To assess the effectivenessof these proposed heuristics, we compare their performance, first between them and thenwith recent heuristics in the literature. The results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposedapproaches on data sets from the literature

Full textWe present a mathematical and a numerical study of mixed and hybrid formulations for magnetostatics 3D in an unbounded domain, discretised with well-chosen finite elements. This study deals with isotrope materials without any condition on the boundary of the magnetic domain, the external problem is solved by an integral method. The first chapter is devoted to the theoritical sights of a first mixed formulation where the magnetic field and the vector potentiel are the unknowns. The existence and the unicity of the solution are established. After the discretization, the matrix system is solved by Uzawa's method. The second chapter presents a perturbation method of the linear system. Good results are obtained for the Problem 13 of the Team Work Shop. We also compared these results with those obtained when the continued problem is perturbed. We, then, deduce that our method is more advantageous than the latter. The third chapter sets out the tree-cotree technic in order to impose the unicity of the vector potential. The fourth chapter introduces the lagrange multipliers used to relax continuity constraints: the continuity of the tangential component of magnetic field and the continuity of the normal component of the induction. Linear systems obtained have block diagonal matrix. Uzawa's method and static condensation method are used to solve these systems. Good results with good accuracy are obtained. Finally, an appendix relates the purpose of a polynomial preconditioning and a code is implemented for a domain having a constant permeability

Zinc oxide is a widely used compound in rubber industry due to the excellent properties that shows as activator for sulphur vulcanisation. Despite its superior characteristics, there is an increased concern about its environmental effects and several research studies have been carried out in order to reduce the ZnO levels in rubber compounds or substitute it. Between all the alternatives proposed to reduce the ZnO levels, the use of nano-sized ZnO particles with high surface area seems to be promising. Another approach to reduce the ZnO levels that has been studied by many authors is the use of alternative metal oxides, such us CaO, MgO, CdO, CuO, PbO and NiO. In this work, novel activators with reduced zinc content have been developed in order to reduce the environmental impact of the rubber industry. Mixed metal oxides nanoparticles of zinc and other metal have been synthesised with the aim of profiting from its size and to take advantage of the behaviour of both ZnO and MgO in sulphur vulcanisation. Another environmental problem related to the rubber industry is the management of end of life and waste rubber, especially tyres. The environmental impact of waste tyres, together with the economic problems related with the management and disposal, has led to a great variety of studies to develop technologies to re-use and recycle waste tyres. The use of reclaimed or regenerated rubber in blends with virgin rubber has been investigated by different authors. However, the migration of chemicals between the crumb and the matrix has not been considered as an advantage in order to use tyre crumb as an activator and, therefore, reduce the zinc levels employed in rubber compounds and introducing new applications for the waste rubber from end of life tyres. This approach has been investigated in this thesis.

This thesis introduces systematic ways to use mixed-integer programming (MIP) to solve difficult nonconvex optimization problems arising in application areas as varied as operations, robotics, power systems, and machine learning. Our goal is to produce MIP formulations that perform extremely well in practice, requiring us to balance qualities often in opposition: formulation size, strength, and branching behavior. We start by studying a combinatorial framework for building MIP formulations, and present a complete graphical characterization of its expressive power. Our approach allows us to produce strong and small formulations for a variety of structures, including piecewise linear functions, relaxations for multilinear functions, and obstacle avoidance constraints. Second, we present a geometric way to construct MIP formulations, and use it to investigate the potential advantages of general integer (as opposed to binary) MIP formulations. We are able to apply our geometric construction method to piecewise linear functions and annulus constraints, producing small, strong general integer MIP formulations that induce favorable behavior in a branch-and-bound algorithm. Third, we perform an in-depth computational study of MIP formulations for nonconvex piecewise linear functions, showing that the new formulations devised in this thesis outperform existing approaches, often substantially (e.g. solving to optimality in orders of magnitude less time). We also highlight how high-level, easy-to-use computational tools, built on top of the JuMP modeling language, can help make these advanced formulations accessible to practitioners and researchers. Furthermore, we study high-dimensional piecewise linear functions arising in the context of deep learning, and develop a new strong formulation and valid inequalities for this structure. We close the thesis by answering a speculative question: Given a disjunctive constraint, what can we reasonably sacrifice in order to construct MIP formulations with very few integer variables? We show that, if we allow our formulations to introduce spurious "integer holes" in their interior, we can produce strong formulations for any disjunctive constraint with only two integer variables and a linear number of inequalities (and reduce this further to a constant number for specific structures). We provide a framework to encompass these MIP-with-holes formulations, and show how to modify standard MIP algorithmic tools such as branch-and-bound and cutting planes to handle the holes.

Over the past decades the Topology Optimization Method has become one of the most popular methods in industry and academia as a mechanical design tool for conceptual projects, and for this reason a lot of advances have been made. Although its maturity, only recently researches have proposed the adoption of non-conventional formulations of the Finite Element Method in order to handle the presence of stress constraints, check board pattern, incompressible media optimization and pressure load problems in Topology Optimization. In this sense, the present dissertation explores an alternative formulation for the topology optimization of continuum structures. The formulation adopted is the Hybrid-Mixed Stress Formulation (HMSF), in which the stress as well the displacement on the domain and on the boundary, are the main variables. A minimum compliance with volume constraint problems fully described in terms of the stress is examined with the compliance computed trough the calculation of the complementary energy. Moreover, to examine the potentiality of the formulation the stress constraint problem was performed and evaluated through a P-mean norm. The formulation has shown to achieve freely checkboard designs, good agreement with available references results based on classic Finite Element Methods and moreover optimized layouts with no fading on the edges. Concerning the stress constraints problems, the formulation has shown to alleviate the stress concentrations regions, agreeing with the results found on the literature, although not achieving layouts with maximum stress lower than the prescribed limit.

Full textThis work focuses on the continuous emulsification process (using SMX static mixers) of bitumen for concentrated and highly concentrated emulsions. This work uses an approach that integrates the process, the physic-chemical formulation and composition parameters, with the main objective of controlling the drop size of the emulsions. It was shown that the emulsification carried out at high bitumen concentrations and high temperatures favours the production of emulsions with very small droplets sizes (mean diameter ? 1 mm). This is in contrast with emulsification process in batch mode, in the same concentration and temperature conditions. These results demonstrate the competition between energy and physic-chemical formulation aspects. It was also revealed that when continuous emulsification is carried out at 90 % wt. of bitumen, droplet sizes are not a function of the energy provided and, hence, the emulsification process is controlled by the formulation parameters. Morphological analyzes, coupled with kinetics of emulsification obtained by in-situ monitoring of the viscosity, allowed the description of the mechanisms occurring during the emulsification at high internal phase ratio. It was possible to identify two principal steps in the mechanism: a catastrophic phase inversion followed by a droplet reduction by agitation, the largest size reduction being achieved thanks to the effects of shear and elongation in the static mixer. An inline process viscosity measurement methodology was developed. This methodology, based on a Poiseuille analogy, allows the evaluation of the rheological behavior of a fluid through flow rate and pressure drop measurements

Full textNowadays in the aircraft industry, structural optimization problemscan be really complex and combine changes in choices of materials, stiffeners, orsizes/types of elements. In this work, it is proposed to solve large scale structural weightminimization problems with both categorical and continuous variables, subject to stressand displacements constraints. Three algorithms have been proposed. As a first attempt,an algorithm based on the branch and bound generic framework has been implemented.A specific formulation to compute lower bounds has been proposed. According to thenumerical tests, the algorithm returned the exact optima. However, the exponentialscalability of the computational cost with respect to the number of structural elementsprevents from an industrial application. The second algorithm relies on a bi-level formulationof the mixed categorical problem. The master full categorical problem consists ofminimizing a first order like approximation of the slave problem with respect to the categoricaldesign variables. The method offers a quasi-linear scaling of the computationalcost with respect to the number of elements and categorical values. Finally, in the thirdapproach the optimization problem is formulated as a bi-level mixed integer non-linearprogram with relaxable design variables. Numerical tests include an optimization casewith more than one hundred structural elements. Also, the computational cost scalingis quasi-independent from the number of available categorical values per element

Full textThe general framework of the developments constituting the matter of this thesis deals with the finite element modelisation of simple material continua. More precisely they concern the extension to large deformations of a rate mixed finite element method developed in previous works for small and quasistatic transformations of continua. After a first chapter devoted to the statement of classical results and notations needful to the comprehension of the following ones, a mixed variational formulation involving the velocity and an objective rate of the Cauchy stresses is proposed, in the frame of large deformations and for a particular class of incremental elastoplastic constitutive laws involving interpolations. Two consistency conditions of the constitutive equations are stated in order to ensure the existence and the uniqueness of the solution of the resulting mixed variational problems. Then the problem of the time-integration of the stress and displacement fields is tackled, and an easy to implement but strongly algorithm is proposed. Its accuracy is analysed through a set of numerical simulations of academic problems. The topics relating to computer programming are also examined, and the routines added to the mixed finite element code EMILI1. 0 in order to extend it to large deformations are described. At last some numerical results coming from simulations with increasing complexity are presented

Full textThe oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) is a complex heterogeneous catalytic reaction allowing the direct conversion of methane to ethylene, at a lower energetic cost than the current industrial processes. OCM requires a temperature higher than 700°C at atmospheric pressure. Hence, there is competition with total oxidation. In the numerous studies reported in literature, the limit of 25% C2 (ethane + ethylene) yield could not be overtaken. Proposed mechanisms are not relevant for all active materials or on all operating condition ranges. A new way to approach the reaction would be to take into account the wider possible panel of parameters involved in this process, from formulation to reactors targeting at process optimisation. The present study permitted to extract relevant descriptors of OCM process from experimental data and establish relationships between descriptors and performances. LaSrCaO catalysts were selected and tested in a parallel fixed-bed reactor and the data obtained were used to validate a micro-kinetic model in this reactor. Experiments were also performed successfully in a dense membrane reactor to improve ethylene productivity. The role played catalyst surface composition was also identified and a critical analysis of the global method implemented concludes this work

Automated driving is an emerging technology in the automotive industry which will likely lead to significant changes in transportation systems. As automated driving technology is still in early stages of implementation in vehicles, it is important yet difficult to understand the nature of these changes. Previous research indicates that autonomous vehicles offer numerous benefits to highway traffic, but their impact on traffic in urban scenarios with mixed autonomous and non-autonomous traffic is less understood. This research addresses this issue by using microscopic traffic simulation to develop understanding of how traffic dynamics change as autonomous vehicle penetration rate varies. Manually driven and autonomous vehicles are modeled in a simulation environment with different behavioral models obtained from the literature. Mixed traffic is simulated in a simple network featuring traffic flowing through an isolated signalized intersection. The green phase length, autonomous vehicle penetration rate, and demand rate are varied. We observe an increase in network capacity and a decrease in average delay as autonomous vehicle penetration rate is increased. Using the results of the simulation experiments, an existing analytical network queueing model is formulated to model mixed autonomous and non-autonomous urban traffic. Results from the analytical model are compared to those from simulation in the small network and the Lausanne city network, and they are found to be consistent.
