The former are solutions of the so called isoperimetric problem, which is to determine the regions of least perimeter among regions of same volume in a given manifold. The latter are critical points of the area functional with Morse index one, i.e., minimal surfaces which admits only one direction where the surface can be deformed so to decrease its area. The trace form gives a connection between the representation ring and the space of invariant bilinear forms of a Lie algebra $L$. This thesis reviews the definition of the trace of an endomorphism of a finitely generated projective module over a commutative ring $R$. We then use this to look at the trace form of a finitely generated projective representation of a Lie algebra $L$ over $R$ and its representation ring. While doing so, we prove a few trace formulas which are useful in the theory of the Dynkin index, an invariant introduced by Dynkin in 1952 to study homomorphisms between simple Li

Human well-being at the national aggregate level is typically measured by GDP per capita, life expectancy or a composite index such as the HDI. A more recent alternative is the Years of Good Life (YoGL) indicator presented by Lutz et al. (2018; 2021). YoGL represents a refinement of life expectancy in which only those person-years in a life table are counted that are spent free from material (1), physical (2) or cognitive limitations (3), while being subjectively perceived as satisfying (4). In this article, we present the reconstruction of YoGL to 1950 for 140 countries. Since life expectancy

Abstract:
This paper applies probit regression models to a nationally representative household survey dataset collected in 2016-2017 to analyze the relationships between various socio-demographic variables and adult Body Mass Index (BMI) in Suriname. Our results indicate that women, the elderly, and couples either married and/or living together are more likely to be obese or overweight. As expected, this is also true for individuals who have chronic illnesses. The analysis also finds that individuals who engage in a sport or in other forms of exercise, even if modest, have lower odds of being overweight

Abstract:
This paper presents evidence on the evolution of both the complexity of the personal income tax system and the compliance costs incurred by personal income tax filers(PIT) in Canada. The complexity is measured using three indicators: ;length of federal income tax code(1971-2018), number of federal PIT expenditures(1981-2014) and length of PIT forms (2000-2015) .All three indicators show an increase in complexity. The compliance costs of the PIT are calculated using survey information gathered from individual canadians on time expanded and amount spent the following year for the 1985, 2007, 201

Abstract:
Background : Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasingly recognized as a cause of chronic liver disease, and often results in the devastating outcomes of decompensated liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma and is an important feature of metabolic syndromes and insulin resistance. The assessment of liver brosis is essential for predicting the prognosis and outcome of all forms of chronic liver disease. A liver biopsy is the gold standard for the assessment of liver brosis, but it has its limitations, which include life-threatening complications. Alternative methods of non-

This paper draws on current research and analyzes participant interactions in a 12-week leadership online training course with students from 14 Latin American countries. The paper systematizes the experience of the Inter-American Institute for Social Development (INDES) and constitutes a case study of an experience in a regional, non-academic online training course. The research concentrates specifically on the effects of and influences on different types of interaction, particularly taking into consideration the intricacies and interrelations of participation, critical thinking, achievement a

The Hydrogeomorphic (HGM) approach is used for developing and applying models for the site-specific assessment of wetland functions. It was initially designed for use in the context of the Clean Water Act Section 404 Regulatory Program permit review process to analyze project alternatives, minimize impacts, assess unavoidable impacts, determine mitigation requirements, and monitor the success of compensatory mitigation. However, a variety of other potential uses have been identified, including the design of wetland restoration projects, projecting ecological outcomes, developing success criter

Scientific languages are vehicular languages used by one or several scientitific communities for international communication. According to Michael Gordin, they are “either specific forms of a given language that are used in conducting science, or they are the set of distinct languages in which science is done”. Until the 19th century, classical languages such as Latin, Classical Arabic, Sanskrit, or Classical Chinese were commonly used across Eurasia for the purpose of international scientific communication. Plant community monitoring at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield (NB) focused on the restored tallgrass prairie community. Six monitoring sites were visited four times and observations of plant species and ground cover were made. In addition to those observations, we included two environmental factors in this report—precipitation and recent fire history—to help understand the vegetation data status and trends. Precipitation data (standardized vegetation index) indicated drought conditions in 2012 and some dry periods in 2016. Although prairies are adapted to drought, we found that species ric
