Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to analyse two ethnographic identities constructed for two barbarian peoples – the Ostrogoths and the Langobards. As I try to argue, the first identity was constructed to show that the Ostrogoths were a civilized people and a better version of the Romans, and moreover, this identity communicated that the Ostrogoths could not be called a barbaric and savage people. Theoderic the Great’s propagandists tried to present the Ostrogothic warriors as defenders of the Roman World. The second identity – constructed for the Langobards – presented them as a people who embodied the very antithesis of their main enemies c. 660: the Franks and the Romans. The origin of the Langobards and the genesis of their ethnic hallmark, i.e. the long beards, were presented as signs of distinction or limitic structures which communicated non-romanitas of this people.

Archeaological and archive sourcesThe territory of the Roman countryside in the Late Middle Ages was extended from the city of Rome to 40 miles in the Suburb, between the coasts of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Albani Mountains, the Lepini Mountains and the course of the Tiber. In the twelfth century various events started in this territory which will greatly influence its appearance until today: the castra arise, as forms of aggregation of a territory enclosed by defensive elements; burgi and villae, small fortified ce

This publication examines the latest finds of the AAE 2015–2017 field seasons. In the central part of Artezian settlement, where the study of the early citadel has been going on for two decades, two different level layers of fire dating from the early period of the Roman-Bosporan war of 44/45–49 were discovered at excavation pit III. Fires are located outside the citadel, in the space between the fortress walls and the defensive moat. The time of their formation did not exceed the limits of 45–46/47 AD. They were well separated from each other, since fire layer 2 lies 0.38–0.45 m deeper than f

The paper deals with particularities of children’s novel as a literary genre and its reception in primary school. It also raises the question whether the genre primarily evolved with a tendency to be intended for young readers or children eventually became the main recipients. The dynamism of artistic narration and unusual motifs are highlighted as the most recognizable features of a quality novel for children, which greatly influences its reliable reception at almost all age levels.

The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  Scotland in the Roman world: Research into Roman Scotland requires an appreciation of the wider frontier and Empire-wide perspectives, and Scottish projects must be integrated into these wider, international debates. The rich data set and chronological control that Scotland has to offer can be used to inform broader understandings of the impact of Rome.  Changing worlds: Roman Scotland’s rich data set should be employed to contribute to wider theoretical perspectives on topics such as identity and ethnic

Abstract:
While the knowledge on immigrants’ integration consolidated through the last 50 years, the Roma studies and the research on the Roma inclusion seems at the beginning. The purpose of this research was to assess if and to what extent the Swiss experience in immigrants’ integration may inspire an efficient approach to Roma inclusion in the Romanian society. After highlighting conceptual vagueness, resemblance and difference in the overall social status of Romanian Roma and immigrants in Switzerland and official approaches to the integration or inclusion of each, the research concludes that the Ro

This brief highlights how structural discrimination and social exclusion shape attitudes to COVID-19 vaccines among Roma communities in Italy, and the role trusted communal and public authorities can play in supporting vaccine uptake and tackling broader exclusions. Contradictions in the Italian state’s response to COVID-19, alongside ongoing forms of exclusion can increase Roma mistrust in state initiatives and prevent vaccine participation. This brief aims to aid and inform local government and public health authorities in Italy that serve populations inclusive of Roma communities. This brie

Social indexicality and enregisterment are basic notions of a theoretical model elaborated in the United States, the aim of which is to describe the relationship between the use of language variation and patterns of social behavior at the level of formal classification. This analytical approach is characterized by focusing on the interrelation of social performance and language awareness. In my contribution, I want to show how this modern methodology can give new impetus to the study of today’s problem areas in Europe, such as migration and language or urban life and language use. Ukraine recognizes Romanian and Moldovan as distinct minority languages, even though the official language of the Republic of Moldova is Romanian. This distinction between Romanian and Moldovan is not merely a symbolic matter, it has practical, negative consequences for members of the minority communities concerned. Since the 1990s, Ukrainian-Romanian relations have been affected by mutual distrust rooted in historical resentments, stereotypes, and prejudice at the level of both political elites and the general public. Moldova and Ukraine have experienced ups and downs in their bilateral relat
