The aim of this study was to investigate factors affecting the uptake of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) by the temperate symbiotic sea anemone, Anemonia viridis. Laboratory experiments were used to test DIN uptake rates of symbiotic and aposymbiotic (alga-free) individuals, to enable the prediction of the magnitude of DIN flux rates in anemones in their natural environment, and to allow the construction of a model of the DIN fluxes in the association. Three aromatic juvenoids (fenoxycarb, JH-286 and a new pyrazole analog) were evaluated for morphogenetic, chromotropic, morphometric and prothoracicotropic activities on the American grasshopper, Schistocerca americana (Drury), and their activities compared with those of commercial methoprene and synthetic JH-III. The present studies were on populations occurring in the Jeddah region where the crabs burrow in moderately well sorted, mostly fine to medium grain sands above the tide level.
