Full textWe live in a society where there is a lot of stress. Children experience on increasing level of stress that can be related to decreasing physical activity and to the fact that they spend more and more of their free time playing computer games or watching the television. This creates a bad habit among the young children, who rather sit down than move around. I assume it is important that the pre-school create such a habit for the children that they want to get outdoors and that outdoor play it is fun and exciting. The purpose of this study is to emphasize the pre-school teachers’ professional role for their pedagogical work in the pre-school playground. The three research questions answered are: (1) How do pre-school teachers’ reason about the educational work regarding children’s outdoor play in the pre-school playground? (2) How are pre-school teachers involved in the design of the pre-school playground in relation to the educational work with the children? And (3) what do they express related to their own participation in the design of the outdoor pre-school playground? The study sets out from the following concepts, children’s play, pre-school playground, outdoor activity and pedagogical work. The study is qualitative and based on interviews with pre-school teachers. The result showed that the pre-school playgrounds in this study, meet the children´s "natural" needs, where they can use their bodies in a natural way as, by running, jumping, playing and to cooperate, both in self-determined or controlled activities. Pre-school teachers’ interest in the outdoor environment design has contributed a great deal to children’s play and development. The study contributes to an insight into what the outdoor environment is about and how its design affects children's outdoor play and development.

Full textThe aim of this study was to investigate and analyze how preschool teachers use preschool yard in their work with mathematics. The method that was selected to collect data was qualitative interviews and observations. The result shows that preschool teachers work with mathematics mainly occurs through use of mathematics concept to term what the children are doing and by challenging them by asking questions that can develop thechildren´s activities. Some preschool teachers mention that they work in an exploratory manner with problem solving. Some preschool teachers also create learning opportunities by providing the children with materials or by working with planned activities on the preschool yard involving mathematics. The result shows that the preschool teachers only see benefits with working with mathematics on the preschool yard and that their attitudes affect how this work is done. The conclusion is that preschool teachers have an important role in how work with mathematics on the preschool yard appears. This makes it interesting that the result still shows that the work with mathematics on the preschool yard occurs primarily on initiatives from the children.

Full textThe study's purpose is to create a better understanding of how Swedish preschool children aged four to five years interact with and perceive the various artifacts on their patio. With artifacts means the physical tools that are on the preschool’s patio. We have chosen to focus on if the children play alone or with others, if they play by the given function or created function, and how they see the artifacts considering aesthetic judgments. We have used the method of the Mosaic approach that emphasizes the child's perspective. In our study have the children photographed the patio. Ten children were interviewed about the patio where the children's photographs were used to discuss. Four children guided us around the patio. The results showed that when the children talked about the pictures they came up with many different uses and opinions about the artifacts. During guided tours, we saw how four children interacted with the artifacts and we even got a comprehensive image of the patio. It turned out that the children used the sand together with the artifacts, which may be due to the sand is easily accessible and easy to move. It was also found that children think about their safety because the children showed a concern of falling from the artifacts that were highly placed. Our conclusion is that the patio offers privacy and play together with other children, and to use the given and created functions together with the artifacts. The results of the study show that the artifacts create a pleasant patio, which appears when the children gladly talk about and show the different artifacts.
