Abstract:

Abstract:

Changing the Present through the Past - Oral Story-Telling in Denmark

Today, many people spontaneously think that oral transmission of traditional legends and fairy tales are a thing of the past. But in the last few decades a new interest has arisen in Denmark in oral story-telling. The new story-tellers relatetraditional legends and fairy tales, but also adventures that they themselves have experienced or invented, or stories from works of fiction. One has the impressionthat story-telling still has a link to the past. The major story-telling festivalstake place in historical surroundings in museums, and present-day story-tellers frequently point to the long history of the story-telling tradition when they speakor write about story-telling.So far, the new interest in story-telling has not been a subject for research, but the present article presents a study of the view of the story-tellers on story-telling and the past. Focus is on which meanings the concepts of nostalgia and authenticityhave for the story-tellers.The article is primarily based on interviews with story-tellers. They were interalia asked to describe how they would spontaneously imagine that story-telling took place in the past. It is a positive picture of the past that emerges, and the story-tellers use images of the past as a platform from which to criticize modernways of life. They criticize the media and electronic gadgets for making people passive and spoiling their being together with other living human beings. By reviving - what the storytellers see as - an ancient and extinct tradition, they wish to create experiences that modern man misses in present-day society. For the story-tellers, the past presents an idealized contrast to the present and thus contains a possibility for the story-tellers to expand about their ideals and hopes for story-telling.

This thesis recreates the relationship between humans and their physical environment in Fort Scott, Kansas between 1850 and 1920 and uses the poetry of J.S. Penny, a contemporary amateur poet living and writing in Fort Scott, as an essential primary resource. Settlers came to this area in southeastern Kansas in the 19th century for its timber-lined streams, high precipitation, and rich soil. The Missouri River, Fort Scott, and Gulf Railroad was extended through Fort Scott in December of 1869. The arrival of the railroad transformed the town. The natural resources which had been a mark of identity for the people of Fort Scott became commodities to be sold in national markets. Manufacturing and industry boomed, but population would eventually plateau in the early 20th century, creating a small industrial city that had maintained a strongly rural sense of community. Penny’s poetry provides a personal, emotional response to the rapid changes to the landscape around him. Some of his poems on the local landscape directly note specific changes in the local ecology, while some demonstrate Penny’s religious connection the natural world—a common perspective during his time. Other pieces show us Penny’s observations of how his neighbors reacted to the weather and environment in Fort Scott. Penny, like many Americans in the early 20th century, saw the history of his home as one of agrarian development and westward expansion over an empty landscape; the Jeffersonian and Turnerian roots of his perspective are evident in his poetry. With Penny’s poetry, we can create a more complete environmental history of Fort Scott by understanding how Fort Scott residents related to the land around them.

Abstract:
The ways in which advertisements can affect social and brand-related aspects is an area of interest for both companies and society at large. The aim of this study is to examine and identify differences in the production and interpretation of advertisements on Instagram, targeted towards men versus women. There are two research questions: (1) How can the production of Gillette and Gillette Venus’ advertisements on Instagram targeted towards men and women differ? (2) How can the interpretation of Gillette and Gillette Venus’ advertisements on Instagram targeted towards men and women differ, based on the gender of the interpreter? The study includes a gender perspective and Goffman’s theory on gender and advertisements has been applied. To answer the second research question, Hall’s encoding/decoding theory has been applied. The study consists of two research methods, a semiotic photo analysis and semi-structured interviews. The photo analysis was used for RQ1 and consisted of six photos, three from Gillette’s Instagram account and three photos from Gillette Venus’s account. The semi-structured interviews helped answer RQ2. A total of ten interviews were carried out, with an even distribution of male and female interviewees. A comparative analysis was used for both research methods to enable comparison between the two genders. The results showed that there are three main differences in the production of Gillette and Gillette Venus’ advertisements on Instagram. As for RQ2, it was concluded that the gender of the interpreter affected how the advertisements’ overall message was interpreted.

Abstract:
This interlude narrates the journey of Job Kattenanit, James Printer’s brother, to Menimesit as a scout and spy for Massachusetts colony. The chapter relies on a careful reading of Job’s petition, preserved in the Massachusetts Archives, an account of Job’s journey by magistrate Daniel Gookin, and the “Relation” of the scout James Quananopohit, Job’s partner in the spying mission, which provides a detailed snapshot of life at the Nipmuc stronghold during the winter of 1675-76. This short piece provides a prelude to the chapter on Mary Rowlandson’s narrative, concluding with Job Kattenanit’s attempt, via an eighty-mile journey on snowshoes, to warn Massachusetts settlers of the imminent raid on Rowlandson’s town of Lancaster.

This chapter talks about the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, based in Pelham, North Carolina that got into the Charlottesville act and applied for a permit to hold a rally in Charlottesville. It mentions the Loyal White Knights leaders Christopher Barker and his wife, Amanda Barker, who led the protest against Charlottesville's plan to remove the Robert E. Lee statue from Emancipation Park in order to stop cultural genocide. It also discusses Glendon Scott Crawford, a Ku Klux Klan member from Albany, New York, who claimed to have invented a radiation-spewing “death ray” gun that he planned to use to kill Muslims. The chapter highlights Jason Kessler's displeasure with Christopher Barker and the Pelham Ku Klux Klan's involvement in the Charlottesville arena. It also discloses Richard Spencer's disinterest and distanced himself from the Klan rally.

Teck-Peng Loh of Nanyang Technological University developed (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 876) a catalyst for the enantioselective addition of an aldehyde to the versatile acceptor 2 to give 3. Kirsten Zeitler of the Universität Regensburg employed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011, 50, 951) a complementary strategy for the enantioselective coupling of 4 with 5. Clark R. Landis of the University of Wisconsin devised (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 164) an Rh catalyst for the enantioselective formylation of the diene 7. Don M. Coltart of Duke University alkylated (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 8714) the chiral hydrazone of acetone to give 9, then alkylated again to give, after hydrolysis, the ketone 11 in high ee. Youming Wang and Zhenghong Zhou of Nankai University effected (J. Org. Chem. 2011, 76, 3872) the enantioselective addition of acetone to the nitroalkene 12. Takeshi Ohkuma of Hokkaido University achieved (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011, 50, 5541) high ee in the Ru-catalyzed hydrocyanation of 15. Gregory C. Abstract:
Tomislav Rovis at Colorado State University developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 5904) an enantioselective catalytic cross-aza-benzoin reaction of aldehydes 1 and N-Boc imines 2. The useful α-amido ketone products 4 were configurationally stable under the reaction conditions. In the realm of asymmetric synthesis, few technologies have been as widely employed as the Ellman chiral sulfonamide auxiliary. Francisco Foubelo and Miguel Yus at the Universidad de Alicante in Spain have adapted (Chem. Commun. 2012, 48, 2543) this approach for the indium-mediated asymmetric allylation of ketimines 5, which furnished amines 6 with high diastereoselectivity. There has been vigorous research in recent years into the use of NAD(P)H surrogates, especially Hantzsch esters, for biomimetic asymmetric hydrogenations. Yong-Gui Zhou at the Chinese Academy of Sciences showed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 2442) that 9,10-dihydrophenanthridine (10) can also serve as an effective “H2” donor for the asymmetric hydrogenation of imines, including 7. Notably, 10 is used catalytically, with regeneration occurring under mild conditions via Ru(II)-based hydrogenation of the phenanthridine 11. A unique approach for asymmetric catalysis has been developed (Nature Chem. 2012, 4, 473) by Takashi Ooi at Nagoya University, who found that ion-paired complexes 14 could serve as effective chiral ligands in the Pd(II)-catalyzed allylation of α-nitrocarboxylates 12. The resulting products 13 are easily reduced to furnish α-amino acid derivatives. Another novel catalytic platform has been employed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 7321) for the chiral resolution of 1,2-diols 15 by Kian L. Tan at Boston College. Using the concept of reversible covalent binding, the catalyst 16 was found to selectively silylate a secondary hydroxyl over a primary one, thus leading to the enantioenriched products 17 and 18. Scott E. Denmark at the University of Illinois has applied (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 3236) his chiral Lewis base strategy to the enantioselective vinylogous aldol reaction of N-silyl vinylketene imines 19 to produce γ-hydroxy-α,β-unsaturated nitriles 22. For the preparation of enantioenriched homopropargylic alcohols 25, the asymmetric addition of allenyl metal nucleophiles (e.g., 24) to aldehydes 23 provides a straightforward approach.

Abstract:
In a remarkable example of chemoselective oxidation, Scott J. Miller at Yale University identified (Nature Chem. 2012, 4, 990) a peptide catalyst that selectively epoxidized the 6,7-olefin of farnesol 1. Phil S. Baran at Scripps-La Jolla developed (Nature Chem. 2012, 4, 629) the Tz°sulfonate as a “portable desaturase” capable of site-specific C–H functionalization of complex molecules, such as in the conversion of peptide 3 to 4. A unique method for the preparation of α-oxygenated ketones was developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 7799) by Laura L. Anderson at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Cross-coupling of cyclohexenyl boronic acid with N-hydroxyphthalimide produced N-enoxyphthalimides 5, which underwent a trihetero [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement to produce, after hydrolysis and protection, ketone 6. The enantioselective α-hydroxylation of oxindole 7 with atmospheric O2 catalyzed by pentanidium 8 was reported (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 4762) by Zhiyong Jiang at Henan University and Choon-Hong Tan at Nanyang Technological University. A catalytic Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of ketones such as 10 using highly reactive metal borate salts was developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 9093) by Kazuaki Ishihara at Nagoya University. Masatoshi Shibuya and Yoshiharu Iwabuchi at Tohoku University found (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 5010) that nitroxyl radicals such as 13 catalyzed the oxidative cleavage of diols to carboxylic acids, such as in the conversion of 12 to 14. A highly reactive iridium catalyst 16 was reported (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 12790) by Ken-ichi Fujita and Ryohei Yamaguchi at Kyoto University, which had high turnover numbers under mild conditions for the oxidation of alcohols including 15. Frank W. Foss Jr. at the University of Texas at Arlington developed (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 5150) a biomimetic Dakin oxidation of electron-rich aryl aldehydes such as 18, using the flavin-type catalyst 19, Hantzsch ester, and oxygen as the terminal oxidant. Flavin-catalyzed oxidation of aldehydes using catalyst 22 was also reported (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 3656) by David R. Carbery at the University of Bath. Carlos F. Barbas III at Scripps-La Jolla developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 12538) a catalytic conversion of aldehydes such as 24 to the corresponding O-acyl N-hydroxyimides (cf. 25), which could be used for in situ amidations and esterifications.

The addition of 13 to 14 to give 15 described (Nature Chem. 2014, 6, 47) by Takashi Ooi of Nagoya University set two adjacent quaternary centers with control of both relative and absolute configuration. Scott E. Denmark of the University of Illinois devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 8915) a catalyst for the enantioselective electrophilic cyclization of 16 to 17 with control of sidechain stereochemistry. Using commercial acetone cyanohydrin 19, Christian V. Stevens of Ghent University cyclized (Eur. J. Org. Chem. 2014, 1296) 18 to the nitrile 20. George W. J. Fleet, also of the University of Oxford, used (Eur. J. Org. Chem. 2014, 2053) similar conditions to convert the sugar-derived acetonide 21 into 22. Michael B. Tropak of the University of Toronto and Dilip P. Dhavale of the University of Pune showed (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 4398) that the nitrone derived from 21 added to an alkene 23 with high facial selectivity, leading to the piperidine 24. In the course of a synthesis of syringolin A, Satoshi Ichikawa of Hokkaido University effected (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 4836) intramolecular Ugi three-component coupling of the isonitrile 25, the acid 26, and the amine 27, leading to the macrolactam 28.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to analyze the associated spectrum of geomagnetic field, frequencies intensity and the time of occurrence. We calculated the variation of the correlation coefficients, with mobile windows of various sizes, for the recorded magnetic components at different latitudes and latitudes. We included in our study the observatories: Surlari (USA), Honolulu (HON), Scott Base (SBA), Kakioka (KAK), Tihany (THY), Uppsala (UPS), Wingst (WNG) and Yellowknife (YKC). We used the data of these observatories from INTERMAGNET for the bigest geomagnetic storm from the last two Solar Cycles. We have used for this purpose a series of filtering algorithms, spectral analysis and wavelet with different mother functions at different levels. In the paper, we show the Fourier and wavelet analysis of geomagnetic data recorded at different observatories regarding geomagnetic storms. Fourier analysis highlight predominant frequencies of magnetic field components. Wavelet analysis provides information about the frequency ranges of magnetic fields, which contain long time intervals for medium frequency information and short time intervals for highlight frequencies, details of the analyzed signals. Also, the wavelet analysis allows us to decompose geomagnetic signals in different waves. The analyzes presented are significant for the studied of the geomagnetic storm. The data for the next days after the storm showed a mitigation of the perturbations and a transition to a quiet day of the geomagnetic field. In both, the Fourier Transformation and the Wavelet Transformation, transformation evaluation involves the calculation of a scalar product between the analyzed signal and a set of signals that form a particular base in the vector space of the finite energy signals. Fourier representation use and orthogonal vectors base, whereas in the case of wavelet there is the possibility to use also bases consisting of independent linear non-orthogonal vectors. Unlike the Fourier transform, which depends only on a single parameter, wavelet transform type depends on two parameters, a and b. As a result, the graphical representation of the spectrum is different, wavelet analysis bringing more information about geomagnetic pattern of each observatory with that own specific conditions
