Full textThe paper introduces the new phenomena of dark tourism that has not ever been analyzed in Lithuanian academic literature. The notion of dark tourism and the variety of its forms is represented. This paper also analyzes the reasons of increasing popularity of dark tourism in postmodern society and the ethical points of dark tourism. This paper concentrates on assessment of Lithuania‘s dark heritage and explains the reasons, why this heritage is in such condition. The main focus is on Kaunas Fortress which is an outstanding example of dark heritage in Lithuania. The representation of dark heritage in Kaunas VII and Kaunas IX museums are compared and also the Lithuanian tourist‘s motivation of visiting the dark sites is analyzed.

Full textThis study examines professional sign language interpreters view on similarities and differences between interpreting on site and remote interpreting. The study also examines coordination and the understanding of the word by sign language interpreters. The material for this study consists of videorecorded interviews which have been analysed based on the study’s research questions. Sign language is a visual language and therefore has grammatical differences to spoken language, for example the signing space in front of the person signing. This study examines what parts of interpreting that change when it is performed remotely and therefore becomes two- instead of three-dimensional for the recipient. The study also investigates how the interpreting is affected when the interpreter users are not in the same physical room as the interpreter. The results show that remote interpreting limits the reference system as well as how bodily orientation is used as a resource in an interpreted conversation. The interpreter can turn towards an interpreter user during on-site interpreting in order to get their attention discreetly, however, in remote interpreting this body turn does not work in the same way, seeing as the screen is two dimensional and that the interpreter user is not in the same physical room as the interpreter.
Bose, Deepanwita. "Tat-independent lentivirus genomes for vaccination and host/pathogen interaction studies." Thesis, Université Grenoble Alpes (ComUE), 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017GREAV009/document.
Full textOur lab has previously described the generation of a unique vaccine prototype against HIV-1/AIDS. It is a non-integrative DNA lentivector vaccine tested in pilot studies in animal models of HIV vaccine. The non-human primate study showed protection of all 6/6 macaques and immune response correlates were composed of a variety of effector (EM) and central memory (CM) T cells. More importantly, they also contained high proliferating antigen specific cells containing a type of stem cell-like memory T cells (TSCM). In this thesis the vaccine was enhanced further by switching the CXCR4 envelope of the vaccine to CCR5 tropic envelopes such as the clade B WARO obtained from a chronically infected patient and a series of three transmitted/founder (T/F) HIV Clade C strains from Zambia. To improve further the vaccine we developed new strategies to incorporate molecular adjuvants able to enhance and sustain the newly elicited immune responses.Since the human lentivirus HIV-1 has developed multiple complex strategies to persist, the focus of the next part of my thesis was to develop a tool to ease and better understand the underlying mechanisms of latency in infected memory CD4+ T cells. Latently-infected cells have non-expressed integrated viral DNA genomes. One of the main mechanisms of this latency is absence of Tat transactivation of the LTR promoter. The recent focus post development of efficient highly active antiviral therapy (HAART), is the cure of the reservoir of latently infected cells. One of the obstacles for this type of studies is the lack of proper primate lentivirus prototypes incapable of undergoing latency as extreme infection model in the evaluation. We hypothesized that a replication-competent SHIV genome driven by the Tat-independent constitutive-expression LTRs of CAEV will be a valuable tool for such studies. We designed chimeric CAEV LTRs bearing the attachment sequences of SIV at their extremities and used them to drive the complete genome of SHIV-KU2. The resulting construct is SHIV-YCC which is expected to generate virus that will not undergo latency due to absence of Tat. We found that cells transfected with SHIV-YCC genome produce SHIV proteins that are assembled into infectious particles released out of the cells. Virions are able to infect target CD4+ T cells both in primary PBMCs and cell lines. Passaged virus in macaques PBMCs increased virus replication and infectivity. SHIV-YCC is the first chimeric primate replication-competent lentivirus that constitutively expresses all viral proteins. This new model offers the possibility of studying the early events by which provirus undergoes latency particularly when the envelop gene will be replaced with that of the T/F CCR5 tropic HIV-1

Full textThis paper describes a telemetry system used in the Missouri S&T solar car, which competed in the American Solar Challenge. The system monitors parameters of a number of the on-board electronic and mechanical systems, and also the activities of the vehicle driver. This data is transmitted to a lead vehicle, where the support team analyzes the performance in real-time to optimize the vehicle's performance. In previous vehicles the data was displayed using a LabVIEW based user interface. In this work we will describe a custom software solution, which provides the team with additional flexibility to display and analyze the data.

Full textThis study is based of the relationship among the assertiveness, the cognitive needs, and the academic performance in students, of the VII and VIII cycle of the Academic Schools of Social Communication and System Engineering at San Marcos University. It has been analyzed how the student processes the data, how he/she learns to learn, how the necessity of acquisition of the new knowledge is produced, as well as, how he/she enjoys acquiring the new knowledge simultaneously with the social relationship that takes place on the future professionals who are carrying out a professional development in order to deal with the social and working world where the competence takes place and just the best qualified and skillful professional will succeed. On the other hand, this research will show the consequences that the variables of study have on the student's academic results. Based on a sample formed by students of the VII and VIII cycle (2004) with 107 students of the Academic Professional School of Social Communication and 156 students of the Academic Professional School of System Engineering. The kind of research developed has been the descriptive one, co relational design, guided sample of probabilistic one. The data was processed by the statistics package of the Social Security Service (SPSS), developing an Chi square tests and getting to know that there is a correlation among the variables of study and the acceptance of the general hypothesis set. Moreover, it was found that there isn't any meaningful difference in the academic performance and the cognitive needs of the Professional Academic School of Social Communication compared with the Professional Academic School of System. Solving convex optimization problems has become extremely efficient and reliable after the recent development of polynomial-time algorithms and advancement in computing power. Geometric Programming (GP) and Signomial Programming (SP) has been proven successful in optimizing multidisciplinary designs due to exploiting the speed of convergence and the ability to model non-linear designs. However, an optimal solution of GPs and SPs can be sensitive to uncertainties in the parameters involved in the problem. In fact, robust optimization can incorporate the uncertainties in an optimization problem and solves for the worst-case scenario. Yet, robust geometric programs (RGPs) and robust signomial programs (RSPs) are not known to have a tractable formulation that current solvers can efficiently solve. In this thesis, approximate formulations of RGPs and RSPs are proposed. Recently, the curiosity regarding the deployment of GPs and SPs in model complex engineering systems has been growing. This awareness has motivated modeling the uncertainties that are fundamental to engineering design optimization. Consequently, RGPs and RSPs provide a framework for modeling and solving GPs and SPs while representing their ambiguities as belonging to an uncertainty set. The RGP methodologies presented here are based on reformulating the GP as a convex program and then robustifying it with methods from robust linear programming. The RSP methodology is based on solving sequential local RGP approximations. These new methodologies, along with previous ones from the literature, are used to robustify aircraft design problems, and the results of these different methodologies are compared and discussed.
