Abstract:
A multi-disciplinary research project has been begun in the fields next to the site of Tel Shalem (fig. 1), the locus of important discoveries since the 1970s (primarily the bronze statue of Hadrian). Recent geophysical prospections have detected the clear layout of a Roman fort and possibly even two successive forts. Two short excavation seasons carried out in 2017 and 2019, with a focus on the principia, resulted in finds that shed new light on the nature, history and identity of the site.

Abstract:
Ever since the discovery of a building inscription of a vexillatio of the legio VI Ferrata near Tel Shalem,1 it was clear that the area was a locus of Roman military activity. In the following years the vicinity of the Tel yielded the inscription of a Hadrianic arch whose letter-size is surpassed only by the lettering on the Pantheon and the Arch of Titus in Rome.2 Most recently, the headquarters complex of the fort (principia), and in particular the regimental shrine (aedes or sacellum), have been uncovered (see above). Within and in front of the aedes were found three inscriptions:3 a dedicatory inscription to Caracalla on a statue base in front of the building (no. 1), and two mosaic inscriptions inside, one at the entrance to the nave (no. 2), the other at its far end (no. 3). The fills covering the building produced stamped roof-tiles bearing three different formulae. The new inscriptions prove that the building was the aedes of the Ala VII Phrygum. The earliest attestation of its presence in Syria Palaestina is inferred from a military diploma of A.D. 1394 found at Apheka, not far from Tel Shalem. Assuming that the Ala Phrygum, attested without the number VII in the province of Syria up to A.D. 88,5 is the same unit as the Ala VII Phrygum of our inscriptions, its transfer to Iudaea is most likely to be associated with the suppression of the Bar Kokhba Revolt.6 The inscriptions published here provide the latest known date for its stay in Syria Palaestina, some 40 years after the latest date so far attested in military diplomas.7

Abstract:
Abstract The author is dealing with the tile-stamps found in the Roman auxiliary fort at Porolissum attempting to establish which of the many units recorded on tile-stamps stayed in garrison at Porolissum. The author of the present article is arguing his own hypothesis on the subject, based on his own excavations at Porolissum and on all the data gathered from the scientific literature. He finally proposes two tables and a graph that correlate all the information on the troops known from the tile-stamps and stone inscriptions, establishing which of them were in garrison at Porolissum and which were only temporarily attached for building activity. At the same time he sets in chronological order the tile-stamps, demonstrating that the three units which built the headquarters building and the gates of the fort (coh III, L VII GF, L III G) were brought to the Porolissum area late in Hadrian‘s reign, to build in stone the fort and other military facilities in the limes area of Porolissum. The permanent garrison of the fort was composed during the 2nd century AD of two infantry auxiliary units, cohors I Brittonum and cohors V Lingonum, while a third one, numerus Palmyrenorum was probably lodged in a smaller fort situated 500 m away, on the Citera Hill. In the third century, cohors V Lingonum was still there, cohors I Brittonum also for Caracalla‘s time (even not recorded by any later inscription, but, at the same time, not attested in another fort), while the smaller Citera Hill fort was out of use and the numerus Palmyrenorum Porolissensium was moved inside the big fort from Pomet Hill. The author is concluding that the garrison of the military site Porolissum was not changed during the Roman rule in Dacia, all the other tile-stamps found belonging to units brought mainly during the 2nd century to built the military facilities of this strengthened sector of the frontier.

Abstract:
Abstract.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study examines professional sign language interpreters view on similarities and differences between interpreting on site and remote interpreting. The study also examines coordination and the understanding of the word by sign language interpreters. The material for this study consists of videorecorded interviews which have been analysed based on the study’s research questions. Sign language is a visual language and therefore has grammatical differences to spoken language, for example the signing space in front of the person signing. This study examines what parts of interpreting that change when it is performed remotely and therefore becomes two- instead of three-dimensional for the recipient. The study also investigates how the interpreting is affected when the interpreter users are not in the same physical room as the interpreter. The results show that remote interpreting limits the reference system as well as how bodily orientation is used as a resource in an interpreted conversation. The interpreter can turn towards an interpreter user during on-site interpreting in order to get their attention discreetly, however, in remote interpreting this body turn does not work in the same way, seeing as the screen is two dimensional and that the interpreter user is not in the same physical room as the interpreter.

Abstract:
Our lab has previously described the generation of a unique vaccine prototype against HIV-1/AIDS. It is a non-integrative DNA lentivector vaccine tested in pilot studies in animal models of HIV vaccine. The non-human primate study showed protection of all 6/6 macaques and immune response correlates were composed of a variety of effector (EM) and central memory (CM) T cells. More importantly, they also contained high proliferating antigen specific cells containing a type of stem cell-like memory T cells (TSCM). In this thesis the vaccine was enhanced further by switching the CXCR4 envelope of the vaccine to CCR5 tropic envelopes such as the clade B WARO obtained from a chronically infected patient and a series of three transmitted/founder (T/F) HIV Clade C strains from Zambia. To improve further the vaccine we developed new strategies to incorporate molecular adjuvants able to enhance and sustain the newly elicited immune responses.Since the human lentivirus HIV-1 has developed multiple complex strategies to persist, the focus of the next part of my thesis was to develop a tool to ease and better understand the underlying mechanisms of latency in infected memory CD4+ T cells. Latently-infected cells have non-expressed integrated viral DNA genomes. One of the main mechanisms of this latency is absence of Tat transactivation of the LTR promoter. The recent focus post development of efficient highly active antiviral therapy (HAART), is the cure of the reservoir of latently infected cells. One of the obstacles for this type of studies is the lack of proper primate lentivirus prototypes incapable of undergoing latency as extreme infection model in the evaluation. We hypothesized that a replication-competent SHIV genome driven by the Tat-independent constitutive-expression LTRs of CAEV will be a valuable tool for such studies. We designed chimeric CAEV LTRs bearing the attachment sequences of SIV at their extremities and used them to drive the complete genome of SHIV-KU2. The resulting construct is SHIV-YCC which is expected to generate virus that will not undergo latency due to absence of Tat. We found that cells transfected with SHIV-YCC genome produce SHIV proteins that are assembled into infectious particles released out of the cells. Virions are able to infect target CD4+ T cells both in primary PBMCs and cell lines. Passaged virus in macaques PBMCs increased virus replication and infectivity. SHIV-YCC is the first chimeric primate replication-competent lentivirus that constitutively expresses all viral proteins. This new model offers the possibility of studying the early events by which provirus undergoes latency particularly when the envelop gene will be replaced with that of the T/F CCR5 tropic HIV-1

Abstract:

Solving convex optimization problems has become extremely efficient and reliable after the recent development of polynomial-time algorithms and advancement in computing power. Geometric Programming (GP) and Signomial Programming (SP) has been proven successful in optimizing multidisciplinary designs due to exploiting the speed of convergence and the ability to model non-linear designs. However, an optimal solution of GPs and SPs can be sensitive to uncertainties in the parameters involved in the problem. In fact, robust optimization can incorporate the uncertainties in an optimization problem and solves for the worst-case scenario. Yet, robust geometric programs (RGPs) and robust signomial programs (RSPs) are not known to have a tractable formulation that current solvers can efficiently solve. In this thesis, approximate formulations of RGPs and RSPs are proposed. Recently, the curiosity regarding the deployment of GPs and SPs in model complex engineering systems has been growing. This awareness has motivated modeling the uncertainties that are fundamental to engineering design optimization. Consequently, RGPs and RSPs provide a framework for modeling and solving GPs and SPs while representing their ambiguities as belonging to an uncertainty set. The RGP methodologies presented here are based on reformulating the GP as a convex program and then robustifying it with methods from robust linear programming. The RSP methodology is based on solving sequential local RGP approximations. These new methodologies, along with previous ones from the literature, are used to robustify aircraft design problems, and the results of these different methodologies are compared and discussed.

Bedford, Philip, Alexis Long, Thomas Long, Erin Milliken, Lauren Thomas, and Alexis Yelvington. Legal Mechanisms for Mitigating Flood Impacts in Texas Coastal Communities. Edited by Gabriel Eckstein. Texas A&M University School of Law Program in Natural Resources Systems, May 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.37419/eenrs.mitigatingfloodimpactstx.

Abstract:
Flooding is a major source of concern for Texas’ coastal communities. It affects the quality of infrastructure, the lives of citizens, and the ecological systems upon which coastal communities in Texas rely. To plan for and mitigate the impacts of flooding, Texas coastal communities may implement land use tools such as zoning, drainage utility systems, eminent domain, exactions, and easements. Additionally, these communities can benefit from understanding how flooding affects water quality and the tools available to restore water bodies to healthy water quality levels. Finally, implementing additional programs for education and ecotourism will help citizens develop knowledge of the impacts of flooding and ways to plan and mitigate for coastal flooding. Land use tools can help communities plan for and mitigate flooding. Section III addresses zoning, a land use tool that most municipalities already utilize to organize development. Zoning can help mitigate flooding, drainage, and water quality issues, which, Texas coastal communities continually battle. Section IV discusses municipal drainage utility systems, which are a mechanism available to municipalities to generate dedicated funds that can help offset costs associated with providing stormwater management. Section V addresses land use and revenue-building tools such as easements, eminent domain, and exactions, which are vital for maintaining existing and new developments in Texas coastal communities. Additionally, Section VI addresses conservation easements, which are a flexible tool that can enhance community resilience through increasing purchase power, establishing protected legal rights, and minimizing hazardous flood impacts. Maintaining good water quality is important for sustaining the diverse ecosystems located within and around Texas coastal communities. Water quality is regulated at the federal level through the Clean Water Act. As discussed in Section VII, the state of Texas is authorized to implement and enforce these regulations by implementing point source and nonpoint source pollutants programs, issuing permits, implementing stormwater discharge programs, collecting water quality data, and setting water quality standards. The state of Texas also assists local communities with implementing restorative programs, such as Watershed Protection Programs, to help local stakeholders restore impaired water bodies. Section VIII addresses ecotourism and how these distinct economic initiatives can help highlight the importance of ecosystem services to local communities. Section VIX discusses the role of education in improving awareness within the community and among visitors, and how making conscious decisions can allow coastal communities to protect their ecosystem and protect against flooding.
