Abstract:
In today’s society, social media has become a part of many people’s everyday life. Social media can be seen as a new phenomenon with millions of daily users all over the world. Social media can further be defined as a forum where people are able to communicate and interact with each other. This bachelor thesis is based on the social media phenomena; blogs- a forum that cannot be ignored. Internet is today commonly used as an information source, the question is if blogs work in the same way and what influence do blogs have over its receivers? This created the purpose of the research; to describe to what degree consumers are getting influenced over what is being negotiated in blogs. The purpose will be answered with help of a research question; what type of influence do blogs have over consumers? Which further are complemented with three hypotheses. In this research a theoretical framework is presented with the theories; brand image, social media, blogs, word of mouth and opinion leader. To gain empirical evidence and to be able to answer the purpose of the research a quantitative method approach has been performed and the empirical findings where done though a questionnaire. Which was further analyzed, with help from the statistical data program SPSS. The conclusion of the research has developed knowledge in the area, blog and moreover to which degree the forum influences its consumers. It could be established that blog have an impact and a relationship to the variables, brand image, word of mouth and opinion leader.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to describe how electronic Word of Mouth within an online forum influence visitors purchase decision. Previous studies about electronic Word of Mouth within online forums have focused on identifying potential factors that can influence visitors purchasing decisions. But they have not investigated visitors own perception of the effect of electronic Word of Mouth. Therefore there is a knowledge gap for this study to explore. A survey was made available to visitors of an online forum. The online forum that was chosen is called Swedroid and has a focus on consumer electronics. The information about products available in the online forum is classified as electronic Word of Mouth. The results from the survey show that a clear majority of respondents believe that the online forum contains relevant product information, which can be used to support a purchase choice. However, a lower proportion of the information in the forum is considered a decisive factor in purchasing. The analysis show two possible reasons behind this. The information that repsondent have come in contact with could be insufficient for making a purchase decision. Or information may have been negative, which causes the visitor to not buy the product. The conclusion is that electronic Word of Mouth within an online forum influences visitors purchasing choices by visitors getting in contact with credible and relevant information, but its effect on purchasing choices is influenced by the content of the information.

Abstract:

Denna strategi kallas för word of mouth.

Today’s society is characterized by an enormously large advertising range and commercial strategies. In this jungle of marketing companies often chosen another strategy, a comparatively unknown strategy based on rumors about a product, service or company as marketing. That strategy is called word of mouth. The purpose of examine word of mouth as concept is important, because today the concept is defined on various manner of several different authors. By making a theory comparison of the conception word of mouth it is possible to create a good definition of the concept, this because that the concept word of mouth lacks a definite definition, that can be applied on our second purpose. The second purpose is to examine if the communication on the selected internet forum prisjakt.nu is word of mouth. In earlier cases this would been examined according to electronic word of mouth that is an adjustment to the internet, but we felt that the concept almost was identical to other word of mouth-theories we choose to make a theory comparison of the concept as described above. Through our examination we wanted to exemplify what word of mouth is and what it can be used for. A literature study was done as a replacement for the earlier research, the earlier research missed an evident significance of the conception word of mouth, and it handled its usage. The research had therefore been made through a literature study where the concept has been plotted and explained. Through the literature study the theory comparison of the concept word of mouth developed. . The theory comparison made it possible for us to apply the concept on the earlier mentioned internet forum. When the finished definition was at hand, the study was made on the internet forum prisjakt.nu, with the concentration on a product that had a big talk about it on this internet forum. This product was strategically selected as we considered it as an essential part for the research as the product didn’t even exist on the market; this due to the earlier theory’s about word of mouths behaviour that indicated that the frequency of the communication about the product was highest just before the product was released in the USA. The product was the Apple Iphone, and has after this research not yet been released in Sweden. The result shows that our definition of word of mouth can be applied on internet forums and that a separate concept for word of mouth on the internet is unnecessary. Our definition of word of mouth is as follows: “Word of mouth is an interpersonal communication, where self generating rumour spreading about people, companies, products or services can be made via telephone, internet or by mouth-to-mouth-communication“. The communication on the studied forums contain a high pitch of interpersonal communication, self generating rumour spread and have a commercialized character on it’s communication and fulfil the three parts that according of our theory comparison is needed for being called word of mouth-based communication.

Abstract:

The social network services (SNS) on the Internet are becoming more common, and are starting to have a higher range of users, which is affecting Internet marketing. We (the authors) have a feeling

that a growing online marketing within social networks could interrupt the order of social standards. That is why we in this paper have tried to figure out what position marketing has – and might have – within SNS, and what impact it will have on social relations.

During qualitative interviews along with both representatives of public relation offices as well as with SNS users, we became aware of the occurring strategies of online marketing, and the users

understanding of it. In the information from the interviews, we found some interesting contradictions on which this paper underlies. As a tool to try to sort the information from the interviews out, we had a

closer look on what networking really is, and its significance for both relations as well as marketing, since networking is a keyword for both PR offices and SNS users. We also needed to find out more

about client relations since it to companies is very much important to manage to keep their clients and create a trust among themselves. They have to know how and where to find their target group and

learn their language, otherwise they will easily be seen through. The PR offices stress sincerity and honesty, so do the users. The difference, however, is the definition of its meaning. The offices say that it is most important to be sincere in the first contact, and as soon as the word-of-mouth (WOM) takes form it is no longer in their hands. This WOM method creates a ripple effect which gives the main message a push. The users, on the other hand, want sincerity by being given the opportunity to choose what commercial message they would want to take part of. But they have no idea that the recommendation from the friend really is a well-laid marketing plan.

The fact that the SNS users really don’t know how it all works is something we see as an ethical problem. Mostly because the rules of friendship is changing, and that the social life of the human

being is becoming a part of marketing. Something that can be prevented – through awareness.

Full text
Abstract:
Seven experiments examined phonological word-form learning (i.e., the learning of novel wordlike sound patterns) after differing types of training. In each case, learning at the end of training was assessed via stem-completion ability. Experiment 1 presented participants with 11 epochs of listening and repeating (incidental learning) and found significant stem-completion ability. The results of Experiment 2 showed greater stem-completion ability after 11 epochs of listening, repeating, and stem-completion testing (deliberate learning). Experiment 3 replicated results from Experiments 1 and 2 in a within-subject design and demonstrated that learning of both types is item-specific and not merely the result of generalized task facilitation. Experiment 4 measured stem-completion ability after 100 epochs of incidental learning and found that it remained lower than after only 11 blocks of deliberate learning in Experiments 2 and 3. Experiments 4, 5, and 6 utilized monosyllabic nonword stimuli, in contrast to the disyllabic nonword stimuli utilized in the first four experiments, and replicated results from Experiments 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Taken together, these results suggest that incidental learning does not yield full mastery of phonological word-forms.

Caruso, Giuseppe. "Organizing global civil society : the World Social Forum 2004." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2007. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/29359/.

Abstract:
The World Social Forum (WSF) was started in Brazil in 2001 to challenge the World Economic Forum. It has since generated a number of regional to local forums, and become the most conspicuous expression of global civil society (GCS). The WSF has been characterised as a space that facilitates the gathering of people with the objective to create alternatives to neoliberalism. The aim of this thesis is to assess the nature and viability of the vision of the WSF. I identify its ideological contours, the immediate political objectives of its activists and the instruments they devised to achieve their goals. In order to do so, I studied the organisational process that led to the WSF annual event held in India in 2004 (WSF2004). By focusing on a specific national expression of the WSF I question some of the analytical tenets of the WSF discourse. In particular I assess the claims that it is a global "public sphere" or a global "open space" as defined in its Charter of Principles (Charter). Rather, I claim, the WSF, both as local instantiation and as global projection, is an expression of conflicting interests and ideological aspirations generated by specific social structures that shape it in ways that do not immediately fulfil the ideals defined in its Charter. The findings of my research do not argue against the global scope of the WSF and for a national approach to the concept of civil society. Rather they show how the global dimension attributed to the WSF is outcome of a recursively constitutive process involving, on one side, ideological aspirations and, on the other, actual social and political relations performed on multiple stages (from the local to the transnational). On the basis of the findings of this thesis, I claim that interests, power dynamics and social structures (considered in this thesis as the specific conditions of existence of the Indian WSF) can assume new shapes in the wider space of GCS. This makes GCS, and the WSF in particular, the privileged arena where the economic, the political, the social, the cultural and the personal can be peacefully and democratically exposed, negotiated, contested and challenged.

An area of left occipitotemporal cortex commonly referred to as the visual word form area (VWFA), has consistently been shown to activate during the processing of written language. However, the exact nature of the region's selectivity is still under debate. In this thesis, I explore the selectivity of the visual word form area at three different levels. First, I examine whether the VWFA differentiates between letter strings of different lexicality and pronounceability and argue that the VWFA's selectivity is greatly influenced by attention. Second, I explore the developmental course of mirror discrimination in the VWFA, and show that children do not display adult-like mirror discrimination of letters even into early adolescence. Finally, I look at the developmental course of VWFA selectivity for words compared to nonlinguistic visual stimuli. While children have adult-like activation patterns when words are compared to a low-level visual control, they show less specialization compared to adults when objects are used as a control.

Kelly, Andrew N. "The role of orthography and visual form on word recognition." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/33453/.

Full text
Abstract:
It is mostly agreed that in order to identify a visually presented word, both the identity and the position of it's constitute letters must be encoded. However, currently most models of word recognition only start after the processes involved in letter encoding has been completed: the so called “visual word form” level. These models concentrate on the process involved in the encoding of the letter position, giving several different solutions to the encoding problem. The problem here is not necessarily that there are different solutions but that each solution is as good at modelling the current data as the next. Thus the solution to disambiguating between them may lie in a better understanding of the sublexical processes involved. Although this seems a logical step it is surprising that very little research has been carried out regarding these processes. The aim of this current PhD project is to address some of the issues involved with investigating sublexical processes, and to start a systematic investigation of several early perceptual processes that may modulate visual word recognition.

Ubbaonu, Samuel C. "Third world policy in the international forum: The struggle for autonomy." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 1991. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/1331.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the origin of the free-flow doctrine, its role in the American mass media coverage of the Third World countries, and in the demand for a New World Information and Communication Order. This dissertation is also intended to serve as an up-date of the development to the call by the Third World, for a New World Information and Communication Order. These goals are accomplished through the application of the weapons of case study, a critical analysis of the United States policy on the mass media, a historical analysis of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's documentary history of the New World Information and Communication Order in Chronological Order 1975-1986, and a comparative analysis of the New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO), and the International Programme for the Development of Communication(IPDC). The principal assumptions made in this dissertation are that the free flow of information which was strongly advocated and staunchly supported by the United States is a misnomer and a calculated attempt to monopolize the freedom of information dissemination. It also tends to be a successful mechanism for the implementation of the principles of the Darwinian Theory of natural selection - the survival of the fittest. This dissertation also assumes that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) does not seem to be the best arena for correcting the ills prevalent in the global information and communication system.

Kapnoula, Efthymia Evangelia. "Not everything that competes means something: evidence for competition among word-forms in a novel-word learning paradigm." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2013. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/4660.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the present study was to investigate whether learning a meaningless phonological word-form, can affect its ability to compete with other words shortly after it was learned. According to previous experimental work we expected that a semantic referent (Leach & Samuel, 2007), and/or consolidation over a significant amount of time (Gaskell& Dumay, 2003) are necessary for a novel word-form to be able to engage in lateral inhibition with other words. In order to examine this we used the experimental design that was used by Dahan, Magnuson, Tanenhaus and Hogan (2001). Experiment 1 was a replication of the Dahan et al (2001) study. In Experiment 2 we added a condition in which a novel word was now assigned the role of the competitor, by inserting a nonword learning task (that was performed right before the Dahan task). The goal was to see whether any differences would arise between this new novel-word condition and the nonword condition. The results from Experiment 2 were inconclusive due to the stimulus set and this is why we conducted Experiment 3, which was similar to Experiment 2, but had a different stimulus set. The results of Experiment 3 showed that, in contrast to the predictions, a novel word can compete with other words, even if it does not have meaning and, moreover, this happens immediately after training. These findings indicate that 1) a word does not have to be complete (i.e. include semantic information) in order to compete with other words and 2) connections between novel and known words can form faster than what has been suggested.

Full text
Abstract:
A growing literature speaks to how non-state actors (both corporations and civil society) increasingly play roles in global governance such as lobbying inter-state deliberations or filling governance gaps in the provision of public goods. Far less analysis, however, has been devoted to how such actors attempt to supply new and original global policy processes altogether. How does a non-state actor acquire sufficient authority to become an anchor of global governance. Over the past forty years, the World Economic Forum (WEF), a business-funded and business membership non-profit foundation, has also gradually emerged as a standing site of multi-stakeholder interactions and negotiations. It convenes diverse actors through its various summits, facilitates joint initiatives among them, and attempts to shape procedural and substantive norms at the global level. Does the WEF's role as a bridge among state and non-state actors make it a legitimate site of multi-stakeholder global policymaking. What does the WEF story tell us about the conditions under which organizations can serve to anchor global policy processes within a multi-actor world society. This dissertation provides an anatomy of the WEF and account of how its functions have evolved in its first four decades. It argues that as the WEF has transitioned from a primarily business-driven management forum into a fuller multi-stakeholder vehicle, it has acquired sufficient recognition and authority to become a unique non-state hub of global policy processes. It attempts to demonstrate this through a detailed analysis of how the WEF's roles have expanded to encompass various convening, facilitation, and norm entrepreneurship activities. It also examines whether the WEF's evolving mission statements and business models have empowered it to adapt to its multiple constituents' priorities while affording it increasing neutrality among them and independence from any one of them. Can the WEF (and similar multi-stakeholder bodies) move beyond being considered supplements to the existing inter-governmental organizations which anchor the international society of states towards being the main legitimate sites for world society interactions. This analysis contributes to the empirical literature on new global governance instruments as well as pluralist accounts of the evolving global policy architecture.

Abstract:
Global social injustice and inequalities remain deeply embedded in our globalized world, often explained as a consequence of the current economic structures and institutions. Therefore, there has been an increase in arenas that attracts mobilization of the global civil society to oppose the neoliberal economic globalization and combat social injustices and inequalities. The World Social Forum (WSF) is an example of an arena that emerged with these purposes. However, research shows that there are criticism regarding the character and function of the WSF. This literature study examines the reasons behind the criticism and compares them with the WSF’s charter of principles to see if the WSF is living up to its ideals. It also analyzes if the WSF’s principles are reflected in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda. This is done through a content analysis and within the framework of social justice and transnational public sphere. The study concludes that the WSF does not live up to its ideals because of a lack in organizational structure, exclusive and elitist character, and also the inequalities and inequities that are reinforced within the WSF. Moreover, the study shows that the WSF’s principles can be found among the 17 SDGs in the 2030 Agenda which can indicate that the WSF has had an indirect role in influencing global development policies.

Abstract:
Research on word learning has focused on childrens ability to identify a target object when given the word form after a minimal number of exposures to novel word-object pairings. However, relatively little research has focused on childrens ability to retrieve the word form when given the target object. The exceptions involve asking children to recall and produce forms, and children typically perform near floor on these measures. In the current study, 3- to 5-year-old children were administered a novel test of word form that allowed for recognition memory and manual responses. Specifically, when asked to label a previously trained object, children were given three forms to choose from: the target, a minimally different form, and a maximally different form. Children demonstrated memory for word forms at three post-training delays: 10 mins (short-term), 23 days (long-term), and 6 months to 1 year (very long-term). However, children performed worse at the very long-term delay than the other time points, and the length of the very long-term delay was negatively related to performance. When in error, children were no more likely to select the minimally different form than the maximally different form at all time points. Overall, these results suggest that children remember word forms that are linked to objects over extended post-training intervals, but that their memory for the forms gradually decreases over time without further exposures. Furthermore, memory traces for word forms do not become less phonologically specific over time; rather children either identify the correct form, or they perform at chance.

Stephansen, Hilde. "Making global publics? : communication and knowledge production in the world social forum process." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2011. http://research.gold.ac.uk/6570/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an in-depth empirical analysis of the character and significance of media and communication in the World Social Forum (WSF), focusing on their relationship to processes of knowledge production. Using the concept of publics as a theoretical tool, it explores how, through mediated communication, forum organisers and communication activists seek to extend the WSF in time and space and thereby make it public. Engaging critically with the idea of the WSF as a global process, the thesis considers how mediated communication might contribute to making the WSF global, not so much in absolute terms as by creating a sense of globality, and how the idea of the global relates to other scales. It develops an understanding of the WSF as an epistemic project that seeks both to affirm the existence and validity of multiple knowledges and to facilitate convergence between them, and considers how different communication practices might further this project. Based on ethnographic research carried out in connection with the WSF 2009 in Belém, complemented by fieldwork at other social forums, the thesis is structured as a series of case studies of different communication practices, ranging from efforts to engage with conventional mass media to various initiatives that seek to strengthen movement-based communication infrastructures and enable WSF participants to communicate on their own terms. These demonstrate that there are many different approaches to making the WSF 'public' and 'global', which beyond facilitating the circulation of media content also involve mobilising new actors to participate in media production and generating a sense of identification with a global WSF process. They also show that mediated communication can contribute to knowledge production not only by facilitating information sharing, but also through the more subtle processes of empowerment, network-building, and translation across difference it can stimulate when embedded in movement dynamics.

Gonzalez, Cristina. "Transnational publicity in theory and practice| The world social forum between deliberation and agonism." Thesis, The New School, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3707637.

Full text
Abstract:

The emergence of transnational practices of publicity challenges the established political theories of democracy, which presuppose a national citizenry and a national democratic state. The subjects of transnational public spheres lack a common citizenship status to develop legitimate public opinion, as well as corresponding decision-making institutions to address their demands. However, by creating solidarity, building legitimate public opinion and communicating their demands on the base of alternative premises, transnational public spheres defy Westphalian assumptions. The World Social Forum serves as a paradigmatic case: while it develops new types of solidarity "among strangers" through horizontal debate and articulation, it unfolds antagonistic forms of communication with global neoliberal institutions of power.

This dissertation aims to contribute to the debate on the critical function of the notion of publicity in the context of globalization. Drawing on Habermas's theory of deliberative democracy and Mouffe's democratic theory of "agonistic pluralism," I examine the World Social Forum's forms of communication, creation of solidarity and legitimation of alternative discourses. Agonistic and deliberative theories of democracy have been traditionally regarded as antithetical, since the former stress conflict and dissent, while the latter emphasize dialogue and consensus. However, the analysis of political experiences like the World Social Forum not only shows that both perspectives are not fully incompatible, but also that they are both necessary to grasp the complexity of actual transnational publicity. In particular, I argue that the combination of these theories reveals one of the main characteristics of the WSF: the merging of antagonistic and consensual practices of communication.

Abstract:
Inspired by the initial World Social Forum in Porto Alegre Brazil, over the past decade over 200 local and regional social forums have been held, on five continents. This study has examined the nature of this broader social forum process, in particular as an aspect of the movement for 'another globalisation'. I discuss both the discourses for 'another world', as well as the development of an Alternative Globalisation Movement. As an action research study, the research took place within a variety of groups and networks. The thesis provides six accounts of groups and people striving and struggling for 'another world'. I provide a macro account of the invention and innovation of the World Social Forum. A grassroots film-makers collective provides a window into media. A local social forum opens up the radical diversity of actors. An activist exchange circle sheds light on strategic aspects of alternative globalisation. An educational initiative provides a window into transformations in pedagogy. And a situational account (of the G20 meeting in Melbourne in 2006) provides an overview of the variety of metanetworks that converge to voice demands for global justice and sustainability. In particular, this study has sought to shed light on how, within this process, groups and communities develop 'agency', a capacity to respond to the global challenges they / we face. And as part of this question, I have also explored how alternatives futures are developed and conceived, with a re-cognition of the importance of histories and geo-political (or 'eco-political') structures as contexts. I argue the World Social Forum Process is prefigurative, as an interactional process where many social alternatives are conceived, supported, developed and innovated into the world. And I argue this innovation process is meta-formative, where convergences of diverse actors comprise ‘social ecologies of alternatives’ which lead to opportunities for dynamic collaboration and partnership.

Abstract:
Two experiments were conducted to explore implicit memory within the auditory modality. It was hypothesized that there would be significant auditory priming in a masked word discrimination task. It was also hypothesized that subjects who performed an elaborative encoding task would show little or no advantage in the priming test when compared to subjects who performed a structural encoding task, but they would perform significantly better on a recognition test. It was also hypothesized that, with an appropriate encoding task, subjects would show a sensitivity to voice changes in the priming test. The results indicated significant auditory priming, and elaborative encoding had a greater effect on recognition performance than priming. No sensitivity to voice change was found. The findings are interpreted as support for the theory that auditory priming is mediated by a perceptual representation system.

Saqer, Ali. "The visible power of the transnational capitalist class : the case of the World Economic Forum." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2015. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/79438/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in the rule-making of 21st century global governance. If offers a critique of existing accounts on the transnational capitalist class (TCC) and the WEF, as a site of this class, that are based on an artificial differentiation between state and market actors. Such artificiality assumes a power relationship that allows market actors to discipline state managers and shape the state’s policy-making along their accepted principles and norms. Thus, the involvement of the state in the WEF’s activities is viewed as a manifestation of this disciplinary power. The thesis argues that the state participates in such activities in response to the imperative of managing capital-labour relations at a global level necessary to reproduce the capitalist social relations of production within its jurisdictions. From an Open Marxist perspective, it argues that the state is a political manifestation of class struggle and an inherent feature of the social relations of capital accumulation. Whilst this indicates that state managers pursue policies that favour the reproduction of the social relations of production, this imperative is not deterministic or a reflection of the disciplinary power of the market. This thesis shows that the argument that the WEF has an influence over the state’s social and economic policy-making is not supported by evidence. It presents a substantial, archive-based, re-assessment of the influence of the WEF’s discourse of international competitiveness over the state. It shows through studying the institutionalisation of competitiveness in the UK how the country has responded selectively to the imperative of state competitiveness. It demonstrates that the engagement of state managers with the discourse of competitiveness is an attempt to secure the circulation of global capital within the economy in order to help reproducing capital accumulation that drives economic growth, employment and living standards.

The work deals with associative thinking and its relation to form design. In contrast to present "conceptual procedures", the creative process is based on "Ad hoc" ways of working, where the designer / engineer becomes a handyman / bricoleur. However, if the architect becomes a bricoleur, he must also get rid of the conceptualization of the work through a plan. This apparent detail inevitably leads to the reconfiguration of other parts of the profession, present since the time of Alberti, when the relationship between the architect and the client is defined by the drawing - the plan. The project simulates the probable way of organizing the work of the architect / bricoleur of the present.

Abstract: In this work, according to the Maingueneau approach, it is analysed the discourse based on the World Social Forum published in two magazines - Catolicismo (Tradition Family and Property¿s expression) and Caros Amigos (a left-wing committed magazine). It is especially analysed the discourses originated from the World Social Forum¿s theme ¿ ¿ Another world is possible¿ ¿ aiming to explain some semantic aspects that delineates the Tradition Family and Property (TFP) and the left-wing discourses in Brazil. Through the analysis of the articles from the referred magazines, it is shown how the conflict is organized between both discourses. The magazine Caros Amigos is the expression of the World Social Forum organizers and members, while the magazine Catolicismo reads World Social Forum ccording to its semantic, resulting in a reading in the simulacrum form of the World Social Forum speech. The analysis that was developed showed how the World Social Forum is built. It is clear, as Maingueneau proposed in his Genesis du discours, a discourse is derived from a work based on other discourses, in this case the World Social Forum definition is derived from the negation of what World Economic Forum represents. In addition, it is explicated the semantic interaction between both discourses as a process of inter-incomprehension, still according to Maingueneau, through the reading that the TFP does of the World Social Forum discourse. Pointing out that any proposal of the World Social Forum for more equality is read by the TFP, which has as main characteristics the hierarch and the harmonic inequality, as ¿a disguised communism¿. Finally, this work confirms the validity of another hypothesis of Maingueneau proposed in Geneses du Discours (1984), which says: ¿ a global semantic rules the discourses that materializes into many genre and several semiotics systems¿. Moreover, the analysis indicates that the identity of a discourse is not only a matter of vocabulary or propositions, but it also depends on the global coherence that integrates its multiple textual dimensions

Nyckelord: Arbetsrelaterad kontroll, arbetsrelaterad stress, arbetstillfredsställelse, utbildning
Abstract The work psychology-related benefits of group training in a shift-going work team The objective of the study was to investigate whether team building-based training could improve work satisfaction, reduce stress, and increase perceived control of the work environment for a shift-going work team. A questionnaire study was performed at a large industrial company in central Sweden. 65 participants were divided into an experimental (participation in training) vs. a control (no participation in training group). The results showed that former compared to latter participants perceived a greater amount of control over their work, as well as estimated their ability to predict the results of their work decisions as higher. Concerning the perceived stress, younger compared to older were shown to experience more support whereas older vs. younger rated the ability to fully use skills and abilities as higher. Keywords: Work control, work stress, work satisfaction, training

Philippou, Styliane. "Vision and language : the modern Greek world embodied in architectural form." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/21464.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with architecture as a creative process which is distinct with respect to the physical appearance of its end products and the manual operation exclusively proper to the architect, yet it can be contextualised within the wider circle of human making with respect to the mental image to which all artists work - when their interest focuses on an inner world of reality - and to the noetic and imaginative operations proper to all makers. First, it embarks on a theoretical inquiry into the nature of architecture as a creative activity or process whereby man is brought into dwelling commensurate with human nature. The purpose of this inquiry is to illuminate the meaning of architecture and the formal principle that finds expression in its products, the kinship between architecture and poetry, and the pivotal role and function of language in the significant act of architectural creation. This theoretical inquiry establishes the perspective within which the architectural making process is examined in the modern Greek socio-cultural context, the distinct historical milieu of Greece after Independence. Viewing architecture as a human poetic projection, as a realisation of the unity of being with word, vision with language, this examination aims at delineating this long poetic journey that through stages of loss and recollection brought about the embodiment of the inner reality of the Greek world in architectural form, made by the hand of Dimitris Pikionis. The stages of this process are traced and paralleled to those of modern Greek poetry, a contemporaneous art process directed towards making intelligible the same reality, and one with a privileged position in the cultural life of modern Greece. Subsequently, the thesis focuses on the making process as a personal creative experience. An account of Pikionis' personal poetic journey is followed by a close reading of his most accomplished work on the Attic hills. This work is viewed as the built product of his self-knowing and world-knowing process, the embodiment of his vision of "the mythical reality of the world", the same vision of the eternal and sacred aspect of visible things that The Axion Esti of Pikionis' contemporary poet, Odysseus Elytis, seeks to evoke. A comparison is ventured between Pikionis' architectural work and The Axion Esti of Elytis, two art-acts which are not simply contemporaneous but also in the same spirit of loyalty - loyalty without servility - to the values and principles of the cultural order in which the two individual creators found themselves embedded and which, for them, conforms to the order of the natural world which they inhabit. Finally, the suggestion is put forward that the architectural act, and the art-act in general, the begetting of a significant form which 'speaks' about and of the created world-order, is essentially a 'world-redeeming' act, an act directed towards a recreation of the world as it was in the beginning.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an analysis of Japanese modernist texts from the 1930s, with an emphasis on the writings of Takami Jun (1907-1965), Ishikawa Jun (1899-1987) and Dazai Osamu (1909-1948). Rather than discuss these experiments within the problematic of influence and see them as secondary gestures imitating the techniques of Gide or Joyce, I attempt to show that Japanese modernist fiction is deeply implicated in its cultural, political and technological moment. 1 begin with a mapping of the historical and discursive forces behind the so-called cultural revival (bungei fukko) and the revolt against the epistemic regime of Westernized modernity: its soulless positivism, its logic of instrumentality which objectified nature and the historical teleologies which inevitably relegated Japan to a secondary place. I examine the works of Takami, Ishikawa and Dazai in this context, against close-ups of specific material and discursive developments. The transgressions and dislocations of linear narrative in Takami Jun's novel Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot (Kokyu wasureu beki, 1936) are read as radical deconstructions of the deeply ideological discourse of tenko (the official term for the political conversion of leftists) as a regeneration of the self, as the return to a natural organic Japaneseness. The narrative of Ishikawa Jun's Fugen (Fugen, 1936) is structured by dualistic tropes which can be seen as configurations of mediation and unity; I explore the meaning of these narrative strategies against the collapse of political mediation in the mid-1930s and the swell of fascist longings for oneness with the emperor. The marked reflexivity of the stories in Dazai Osamu's first published collection The Final Years (Bannen, 1936) is discussed in the context of the profound anxieties generated by the accelerated logic of cultural reproduction and the technologically altered texture of experience. I argue that in their shared emphasis on discursive mediation and the materiality of language, the texts of Takami, Ishikawa and Dazai become figures of resistance to a nativism which strove for immediate authenticity and abandoned representation for the metaphysics of timeless Japaneseness.

National economic competitiveness is a major concern to governments, firms, and individuals in an increasingly globalised world. Culture is known affect economic competitiveness, but there is little existing research that links Hofstede’s cultural dimensions with the Human Capital Indicators in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index. U-blox is an international firm with offices around the world. The firm has grown through acquisitions and has become a key player in the wireless communication and positioning semiconductors business. The chosen topic will study the cultural aspects of a selected group of u-blox subsidiaries. The values in a workplace are in fact influenced by culture and by their human capital. Using Hofstede’s dimensions to analyse the cultural factors, it is possible to study the international context of the human capital in each subsidiary by using reliable international indicators provided in the Global Competitiveness Index.
