Abstract:
Background Loneliness is a public health concern, and increasingly, individuals experiencing loneliness are seeking support on online forums, some of which focus on discussions around loneliness (loneliness forums). Some of these individuals may also seek support around loneliness on online forums not related to loneliness or well-being (nonloneliness forums). Hence, to design and implement appropriate and efficient online loneliness interventions, it is important to understand how individuals who express and seek support around loneliness on online loneliness forums communicate in nonloneliness forums; this could provide further insights into the support needs and concerns of these users. Objective This study aims to explore how users who express the feeling of loneliness and seek support around loneliness on an online loneliness forum communicate in an online nonloneliness forum. Methods A total of 2401 users who expressed loneliness in posts published on a loneliness forum on Reddit and had published posts in a nonloneliness forum were identified. Using latent Dirichlet allocation (a natural language processing algorithm); Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (a psycholinguistic dictionary); and the word score–based language features valence, arousal, and dominance, the language use differences in posts published in the nonloneliness forum by these users compared to a control group of users who did not belong to any loneliness forum on Reddit were determined. Results It was found that in posts published in the nonloneliness forum, users who expressed loneliness tend to use more words associated with the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count categories on sadness (Cohen d=0.10) and seeking to socialize (Cohen d=0.114), and use words associated with valence (Cohen d=0.364) and dominance (Cohen d=0.117). In addition, they tend to publish posts related to latent Dirichlet allocation topics such as relationships (Cohen d=0.105) and family and friends and mental health (Cohen d=0.10). Conclusions There are clear distinctions in language use in nonloneliness forum posts by users who express loneliness compared to a control group of users. These findings can help with the design and implementation of online interventions around loneliness.

Abstract:
Word-of-mouth (WOM) communication has received a great deal of attention from marketing academics and practitioners alike. Widespread use of the internet for shopping, information gathering and entertainment purposes has changed not only the ways that WOM can be studied and manipulated but also the very nature of the phenomenon. Published research into electronic WOM (eWOM) first appeared in the top-level marketing journals only about ten years ago. Since that time, there has been a great deal of research but no synthesis of the knowledge that would allow one to draw conclusions regarding the evolving nature of WOM and to extend the theory applied to this topic. This paper will address that gap, applying the paradigm funnel technique and will suggest some future research directions.

Abstract:
This study investigated how potential customers (N = 28) respond to two types of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) regarding the same product. The study simulated reality by having participants read either mainly negative comments from an independent discussion forum (n = 14) or mainly positive comments from a marketer's website (n=14). The results showed that the participants' valence ratings were positive after reading eWOM on the marketer's website and negative after reading eWOM on the independent forum. Although this seems obvious, it is interesting that even though the comments on the independent forum were not considered trustworthy or expert, reading these comments negatively influenced the product image. Participants who read the independent forum rated the product image significantly lower than participants who read the marketer's website. After watching commercial videos, both groups rated the product image higher; however, the difference between the groups remained significant. The results suggest that the emotions evoked by eWOM play a key role in product image. A practical implication for companies may be purchasing targeted advertising on discussion forums to manage potential customers' negative affective reactions.

Abstract:
This article describes word meaning negotiation (WMN) in online discussion forum communication, a form of computer-mediated communication (CMC). WMN occurs when participants who are engaged in a discussion about a particular topic remark on a word choice of another participant, thus initiating a meta-linguistic sequence in which a particular word is openly questioned and the meaning of that word is up for negotiation. By closely studying the process of WMN and focusing on the practices of the participants engaged in it, this article empirically explores how situated meaning in concrete utterances is established by participants who are in disagreement about word meaning. Routine ways of entering into a WMN sequence are identified, as well as typical ways of contributing to the negotiation once the discussion has shifted focus from being on topic to being on word meaning. The article highlights the context-sensitivity of word meanings and illustrates how participants engaged in WMN orient toward both semantic properties of the words themselves as well as to relevant aspects of the conversational context.

Abstract In the previous study (Takahashi 2010), the omission of rendition was identified as one of the student problems. In the present study, ten undergraduate students interpretation and those of two professional interpreters were compared. It was found that decreasing accuracy of interpretation of the following sentence was identified as one of the student problems. Also, it was examined that there was an interpreting unit where the participants who used natural Japanese expressions in the proceeding sentence but with fillers, resulting in omitting or substituting interpretations in the following sentence. It is suggested that some of the student participants were not able to de-verbalize the English word in the source speech, and resulting eventually in the omission and substitution. Therefore, it is recommended that students should be taught a de-verbalization process (Selescovith,1989) as part of interpreting theory.

Abstract:
The article focuses on current word-formation processes in the Russian language and the role of adverbs and state-of-being words involved. The Runet forum discourse presents a favourable medium for such processes. The author analyzes new derivatives in the above-mentioned parts of speech found in different Internet thematic forums and present the structural and semantic characteristics of such units with some elements of pragmatic and stylistic analysis. The ways of word-formation revealed in the available sample are considered successively. The most productive word-formation models, derivative stems, affixes, related stylistic devices, etc., are pointed out. It was found out that the most productive way is suffixation, while pure combination, fusion and the prefix-suffixal mode also display noticeable productivity. The status of the suffix -en'ko is discussed. It demonstrates a particular activity within the sample as it is involved in the realization of several word-formation methods at once. We note the frequent use in derivational processes of the stems and affixes evaluating the size (there are both diminutives and magnifying ones), as well as the abundance of various anomalies associated with the creation of new words: alternate steps; oxymoronic, pleonastic, stylistically contrasting combination of derivational units in the derivative word; abnormal graphical/orphographic representation of new derivatives, etc.

Abstract:
At present, the virtual forums are free and convenient speaking platforms, according to the speaking specifications and through the examination of forum administrators, the forum users can publish various articles easily. However, as the number of users increases, it is difficult for the forum administrators to check them one by one, and return all the articles to be revised. Also, the publishers (article providers) may write violative words unconsciously, so the article writers infringe the forum specifications with the publication, and shall revise the violative articles. Therefore, this paper develops an Article Reorganization Model based on Emotion Implied in Forum Articles including Article Expressed Emotion Determination Module and Publisher's Article Statement Reorganization Module. The first module deduces the emotion type of articles by analyzing representative events of articles, creating emotion word membership coefficient, analyzing similar statements and analyzing emotion probability and stable value. The second module uses integrated semantic similarity analysis, review score analysis and multiple combined sentences establishment, the article's statement structure can be reorganized. This paper builds a Web-based system and a real-world case is applied to confirm the feasibility of this methodology. For forum administrators, violative articles can be extracted rapidly from the articles with specific emotions and the violative statements will be reorganized. For article writers, the statements of violative articles can be revised automatically to save the time for revising violative articles.

Abstract:
From the semiotic point of view, folklore tradition is transmitting culturally and socially significant messages via oral communication channels. Strong interrelation to dynamic interaction of people in vernacular contexts (as opposed to rigid institutional channels and static social structures) is one of folklore’s primary characteristics. With this perception of folklore tradition, folklore studies become a disciplinary area that accumulates unique research experience both on comprehension of transmitted messages and on methodological principles of working with texts and mechanisms of their transmission. This allows us to suggest that in research practice in neighboring fields two variants of transference of folklore studies’ theoretical resources may prove productive: according to presence of folklore elements in the studied material and according to general principles of working with texts (in the broad semiotic sense of the word). The participants of the forum, all of them researchers with extensive experience in field work as well as in theoretical comprehension of oral tradition – were offered various problems for discussion. These problems included, but were not limited to, the boundaries of folklore studies’ object field, employing folklore studies’ methodological tools for analysis of other disciplinary fields’ objects, interaction of folklore studies with other academic disciplines, etc.

Abstract This article focuses on the Japanese words kokumin and minzoku, both of which are used to translate ‘nation’ into Japanese, and explores the dynamic aspects of translation practice in the process of Japan’s modernization in the mid-Meiji era (1868–1912). The kanji (Chinese characters) compounds kokumin (國民) and minzoku (民族) were both coined during the late nineteenth century during the introduction of Western concepts into Japanese society. Kokumin first appeared as a translation word at the predawn of Japan’s modernization period and, by the mid-Meiji era, when the alternative translation minzoku emerged, kokumin was relatively widespread. This paper analyzes texts written by leading intellectuals and journalists in Japan at the time and attempts to contextualize them within their sociocultural and historical background. The analysis indicates that the rise of nationalism around the mid-Meiji era, Japan’s achievement in establishing a modern state and its involvement in territorial expansion in East Asia beginning with the Sino-Japanese war (1894–1895), as well as its simultaneous struggle to unify the Japanese people as kokumin, were crucial aspects in determining the use of the alternative translation, minzoku.

Abstract This study addresses the use of hyperbole in the Quran at the word level and its English translation. It investigates the morphological shift of hyperbolic patterns such as ‘Fa’uul (فعول), Fa’eel (فعيل) and Fa’aal’ (فعال) and their corresponding English translations. We attempt to determine the implications underlying the translation strategies for the translation quality of the data under study. Under this circumstance, the translator applied a series of translation strategies, such as literal translation, paraphrase, transposition, and morphological strategies, with transposition being the most employed strategy. Such strategies were in some cases a problem for the functions of the Quranic hyperboles. As such, the translation quality was occasionally poor.

Abstract:
Much of identity formation processes nowadays takes place online, indicating that intergroup differentiation may be found in online communities. This paper focuses on identity formation processes in an open online xenophobic, anti-immigrant, discussion forum. Open discussion forums provide an excellent opportunity to investigate open interactions that may reveal how identity is formed and how individual users are influenced by other users. Using computational text analysis and Linguistic Inquiry Word Count (LIWC), our results show that new users change from an individual identification to a group identification over time as indicated by a decrease in the use of “I” and increase in the use of “we”. The analyses also show increased use of “they” indicating intergroup differentiation. Moreover, the linguistic style of new users became more similar to that of the overall forum over time. Further, the emotional content decreased over time. The results indicate that new users on a forum create a collective identity with the other users and adapt to them linguistically.

Abstract:
Speaking is not only about using language as a medium for delivering messages from the sender to the recipient, but also activities that involve brain work. In language activities, speakers who produce language orally are also producing language structures in their brains. This working paper aims to describe the pause phrases that often appear every time there is a public conversation. In addition, the presentation will also explain about language activities outwardly which are in line with the language process that is conceptualized in the mind, namely that every conversation sometimes stops because there are certain factors such as nervousness and other psychological conditions. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data in this study is the speaking word apa namanya in the verbal communication process produced by public speakers in conducting oral presentations in a scientific forum. Data analysis using taxonomic theory expressed by Leonard Bloomfield about linguistic behaviorism. Another theory is the outer structure and inner structure proposed by Noam Chomsky. Based on the analysis carried out, it was found that the word pause emerged from public speakers in scientific forums as a form of behavior that showed a reaction to the stimulus in the mind. These stimuli include nervousness, confusion, forgetfulness, and loss of concentration. The reaction appears with language behavior in the form of the emergence of a pause word to collect scattered focus and plan the next conversation. Based on these results, the speaking pause is used by public speakers to stay in control of the forum and to stay in the flow of the conversation.

Abstract:
Form requirements particularly for arbitration clauses are widely perceived as an obstacle for efficiently resolving disputes on an international level. The paper discusses recent suggestions that the freedom of form principle under Art. 11 CISG extends to arbitration, forum selection or choice of law clauses in international sales contracts and thus supersedes any and all formal requirements in this regard. The authors establish that said clauses indeed are generally within the CISG's scope of application and that, consequently, questions of contract conclusion, interpretation, and remedies for breach of these clauses are governed by the CISG. Freedom of form under the CISG, however, was neither intended to nor should it apply to arbitration, forum selection or choice of law clauses. This result is further confirmed by the interplay of the CISG with other international conventions, first and foremost the 1958 New York Convention, as well as a careful analysis of the so called most-favourable-law-approach. The recent aim to do away with form requirements for arbitration, forum selection or choice of law clauses can thus not be reached by taking a detour to the CISG, but only by directly abolishing or adjusting these form requirements.

Abstract A survey of 80 translation scholars in South Korea was conducted to shed light on their professional backgrounds and how their profiles compare with those of the translation scholars in Europe surveyed by Torres-Simón and Pym in 2016. The survey results suggest that Korean scholars tend to be younger than scholars in Europe (84 percent of the former are under fifty, compared to 68 percent of the latter), more female-dominated (85 percent versus 70 percent), and less internationally mobile. The great majority of both Korean scholars (84 percent) and scholars in Europe (96 percent) have translated or interpreted on a regular basis. Both groups generally agree that there is a beneficial relationship between translation theory and practice. In both samples, the respondents who said practice helps theory outnumber those that said theory helps practice. The last section of this study is a word-cloud analysis on the adjectives that Korean scholars used to describe the relationship between theory and practice.

This article uses the material of anonymous Internet forums to analyse the semantic field of deception by the instrumentality of artificial neural networks. Two major imageboards were investigated: 2ch.hk and 4chan.org, being the most popular Russian and American imageboards. For the experiment an algorithm called Word2vec was used to examine 30 million word usages for either of the languages. This analysis revealed 10 words with the greatest semantic proximity to terms from semantic fields of «deception» for Russian and American English. The results showed the tendency among native Russian imageboard users to link the concept of deception with religion and spiritual sphere, while American forum users associate deception with politics and related concepts.

With reference to a phalanx of authoritative Qur’anic exegetes and three leading Qur’anic translations, and by drawing on ʿAtīq’s (1985) taxonomy of Arabic pun, and Delabastita’s (2004) model of pun translation, the study examines a four-fold classification of pun: (1) abstract pun, (2) immediate-meaning-oriented pun, (3) far-meaning-oriented pun, and (4) aided pun. Given the semantic indirectness and sophistication immanent in punning, it is argued that Qur’anic pun, as a rhetorical device, is quite thorny from a translational standpoint. The study reveals that three out of nine translation strategies have been used: the literal strategy, the manipulative strategy, and the situational strategy. The literal strategy capitalizes on the immediate meaning, and ‘auctions off’ or ‘pulverizes’ the punning meaning, which, subsequently, may result in incommensurate translation damage. The situational strategy involves adding, for the entire translation, a descriptive word or phrase between brackets, and the manipulative strategy advocates text-in-context perspective. The study wraps up with a proposal for the interpretive strategy, which hinges upon exegesis-driven paraphrasing. This particular translation strategy has a greater emancipatory potential.

Abstract:
AbstractThomas Jefferson coined the image of the academical village for the university-campus. Whereupon the word village can be translated into the German expression ›Dorf‹ (village) as well as ›Gemeinde‹ (community). Thus the place and people, who enliven their surroundings, are an integral part of the campus. This metaphor gathers the cultural imprint of the campus as an ideal environment for learning as well as its incorporated imaginations. This article follows the question, if the buildings of a university can be seen as a result of the social structures of the academical village. Perhaps they were intended from the beginning on as a production of these social configurations. Therefore this paper wants to inquire specifically into the expressiveness of architecture in the specific case of the early Saarbrücken campus planning of the Universität des Saarlandes. The field of tension university shall be approached as a topic between representative institution and architectural manifestation.

BBS (Bulletin Board System) forum of campus provides a main platform that students from the same university can communicate with each other by posting a post or comment others posts. The posts and comments in campus BBS contain useful information about the students. In this paper, we design and implement a program to collect the emotional data that were generated in the last two months in BBS of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and analyze the fluctuation of the emotion along with time. Firstly, we implement a simple crawler to fetch the content of posts and comments; secondly, using Chinese lexical analysis system to get the words; then, give each word an emotional tendency (positive or negative) by using lexicon and analyze the result.

Abstract:
Background Cancer affects individuals, their family members, and friends, and increasingly, some of these individuals are turning to online cancer forums to express their thoughts/feelings and seek support such as asking cancer-related questions. The thoughts/feelings expressed and the support needed from these online forums may differ depending on if (1) an individual has or had cancer or (2) an individual is a family member or friend of an individual who has or had cancer; the language used in posts in these forums may reflect these differences. Objective Using natural language processing methods, we aim to determine the differences in the support needs and concerns expressed in posts published on an online cancer forum by (1) users who self-declare to have or had cancer compared with (2) users who self-declare to be family members or friends of individuals with or that had cancer. Methods Using latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), which is a natural language processing algorithm and Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC), a psycholinguistic dictionary, we analyzed posts published on an online cancer forum with the aim to delineate the language features associated with users in these different groups. Results Users who self-declare to have or had cancer were more likely to post about LDA topics related to hospital visits (Cohen d=0.671) and use words associated with LIWC categories related to health (Cohen d=0.635) and anxiety (Cohen d=0.126). By contrast, users who declared to be family members or friends tend to post about LDA topics related to losing a family member (Cohen d=0.702) and LIWC categories focusing on the past (Cohen d=0.465) and death (Cohen d=0.181) were more associated with these users. Conclusions Using LDA and LIWC, we show that there are differences in the support needs and concerns expressed in posts published on an online cancer forum by users with cancer compared with family members or friends of those with cancer. Hence, responders to online cancer forums need to be cognizant of these differences in support needs and concerns and tailor their responses based on these findings.

During a presidential forum in the 2008 US presidential campaign, the moderator, Pastor Rick Warren, wanted Senator John McCain and then-Senator Barack Obama to definerichwith a specific number. Warren wanted to know at what specific income level a person goes from being not rich to rich. The problem with this question is that there is no specific income at which a person makes the leap from being not rich to being rich. This is becauserichis a fuzzy set, not a crisp set, with different incomes having different degrees of membership in therichfuzzy set. Fuzzy logic is needed to properly ask and answer Warren's question about quantitatively definingrich. An imprecise natural language word likerichshould be considered to havequalitative definitions, crisp quantitative definitions, andfuzzy quantitative definitions.

Abstract:
Despite its ubiquity, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is still under-researched from a Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) perspective. Thus, this paper investigates the discourse of women survivors of IPV focusing on a corpus-driven examination of the data. This is done after applying the text-analysis software tool LIWC (Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count) to a 120,000-word corpus collected from an anonymised, public, online forum available to IPV survivors. I contrast a plethora of linguistic phenomena in three online communities embedded within this forum (‘Is it Abuse?’, ‘Getting out’ and ‘Life after abuse’) in the attempt to sketch out how the discursive output varies across these three stages. This paper shows how pronominal distribution plays a role in the forging of collective identity. Differences in the emotional tone across the three explored groups are also identified. Useful though these corpus-driven pointers may be, this study also warns of the precaution with which findings solely deriving from quantitative analyses need to be treated.

IntroductionWe evaluated participation effects and motives of people participating in an online discussion forum for depressive patients.Objectives/AimsCharacteristics of participants, diagnoses and treatment status were analysed. In addition, the effects of participation in the forum on the individual handling of the illness and their motivation to use the online forum were examined.Methods55 active users were interviewed by telephone using a computer-assisted version of a fully structured psychiatric interview (DIA-X) and online with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).Results52 study participants (94.5%) received the diagnosis depression. Currently, 36.5% of the respondents suffer from a depressive episode. 90.2% received outpatient treatment before, 64.7% inpatient treatment. The respondents stated that their trust in medical treatment was raised (63.3%) and that they were encouraged to seek professional help (61.2%).ConclusionThe forum reaches its targets, namely to provide an information platform for depressive patients and their relatives to encourage patients to seek professional help and the users do not see it as an alternative, but rather as a supplement to professional and psychological care. By participating in the forum, aspects of self-help, especially a strengthened sense of community and acceptance of coping with the own illness-related situation can be accomplished. The results of this study as well as first results of a current research project, an evaluation of the content by analyzing word counts in psychological and linguistic categories, will be presented in the context of chances and risks of this E-mental health tool.

Abstract:
Bahtsul masail is one of the mechanisms of Islamic jurisprudence in Indonesia which is done collectively (jama’ i). Forum that comes fromthis pesantren is not consisted of permanent council, but open to kiai and jurisprudence. The term bahtsul masail itself comes from pesantren, which is a substitute for the word ijtihad or istinbath. Bahtsul masail can also be referred to as intellectual forum of pesantren outside the learning system. In the tradition of pesantren learning, the students studied the yellow book with sorogan and bandongan system. In the sorogan tradition, the santri individually get direct guidance from the kiai or ustadz. While in the bandongan system the santri together listened to the reading and explanation of the kiai while giving notesto their respective books. While the mass bahsul masail in pesantren is a higher-level recitation system, involving senior santri who have met certain scientific standards, or alumni who have completed the education phase at the pesantren. In this issue the senior students and alumni of pesantren are ‘challenged’ to think hard and solve various religious problems faced by the surrounding community with the reference of ‘kitab kuning’ that have been studied. Bahtsul masail not only serves as a forum for discussion or assessment forums, more than that bahtsul masail becomes a forum of legal determination on some importantissues concerning the problematic of people from time to time. When it was adopted by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) since the founding of the organization in 1926, bahtsul masail has grown, both in terms of the choice of masail (question), as well as its procedures of discussion and ratification; according to the development flow of NU organization from year to year. It can be simply said that the first bahtsul masail was a forum to seek the reference of various religious questions (masa’il diniyyah) from collective kitab kuning (jama’ i).

Abstract:
The study is intended to signal changes in the way of communication in a rural family, including the problem of shrinking or even disappearance of traditional oral communication. For centuries, this message has determined the transmission of broadly understood culture, including traditions and customs. At present, the spoken word, one of the typical features of peasant culture, is being forced out of family life for the sake of other forms of communication. The forum for exchanging thoughts, opinions or views has moved from the family table to the Internet, and the activity in conducting conversations is focused primarily on social media or various types of discussion forums.

Abstract:
We examined the predictive value of wait signals for sarcasm in online debate forums. In a corpus comparison we examined the word frequency of um and uh across six corpora. In general, there were far more fillers in spoken corpora than written corpora. We also found that the proportion of ums to uhs varied by corpus type. In Experiment 1 we tested whether the inclusion of um or uh at the beginning of online debate forum posts led to higher probability of those posts being classified as sarcastic by Amazon Mechanical Turk workers. We found that posts beginning with these items were twice as likely to be labeled sarcastic. In Experiment 2 we tested fillers and ellipses in the middle of posts. We found that posts including these items were approximately three to five times more likely to be labeled sarcastic. We compared results to other signals like the word obviously and quotation marks. Signals that indicate delay in written communication cue readers to non-literal meaning.

Abstract:
Arabic is the official language of Jordan. Yet, English is a language of prestige among many upwardly mobile Jordanians. Sakarna (2006) dubs a hybrid language comprised of a mixture of these two languages “Englo-Arabic”. In online contexts, a similar hybrid language has emerged. Often popularly labeled “3arabizi” or “Arabish”, a blended word based on the words “Arabic” and “English”, this mixed code is the most commonly encountered form of language for composing forum messages on the popular Jordanian website, Mahjoob.com (http://www.mahjoob.com). The most striking feature of 3arabizi is that it is written in Latin script and uses arithmographemics i.e. numbers as letters to represent Arabic sounds that do not occur in English. This article presents the key orthographical features of 3arabizi and discusses its topical occurrence when compared to both Arabic and English as observable within a purposive sample of web forum messages collected from Mahjoob.com.

Abstract:
Background Internet is a particularly dynamic way to quickly capture the perceptions of a population in real time. Complementary to traditional face-to-face communication, online social networks help patients to improve self-esteem and self-help. Objective The aim of this study was to use text mining on material from an online forum exploring patients’ concerns about treatment (antidepressants and anxiolytics). Methods Concerns about treatment were collected from discussion titles in patients’ online community related to antidepressants and anxiolytics. To examine the content of these titles automatically, we used text mining methods, such as word frequency in a document-term matrix and co-occurrence of words using a network analysis. It was thus possible to identify topics discussed on the forum. Results The forum included 2415 discussions on antidepressants and anxiolytics over a period of 3 years. After a preprocessing step, the text mining algorithm identified the 99 most frequently occurring words in titles, among which were escitalopram, withdrawal, antidepressant, venlafaxine, paroxetine, and effect. Patients’ concerns were related to antidepressant withdrawal, the need to share experience about symptoms, effects, and questions on weight gain with some drugs. Conclusions Patients’ expression on the Internet is a potential additional resource in addressing patients’ concerns about treatment. Patient profiles are close to that of patients treated in psychiatry.
