Abstract:
AbstractSurrogacy has long been discussed in reproductive medicine. In the Czech Republic, surrogacy is not legally regulated. Because of this legal vacuum, there are no official procedures or organizations that openly deal with surrogacy. Potential surrogate mothers and applicants do not have many options for obtaining or sharing information. The only source is the Internet. Online forums are a popular tool for gaining information and contacts regarding surrogacy. The goal of this research was to use qualitative research methods to survey the most searched and discussed topics on Czech online discussion forum websites. We used discussions that we found on www.emimino.cz between 2009 and 2019. This article analyses the comments of the Internet forum discussants/participants, their involvement, knowledge of surrogacy, the information sought and their opinions. In particular, the participants discussed where to find a surrogate mother or how to become one. This article attempts to outline the discussions ordinary people have about surrogacy outside official expert forums.

Abstract:
</p>This article examines heroic conceptions of terrorists, support, and sympathy for terrorism in Indonesia by undertaking a content analysis of four Indonesian online discussion forums in the aftermath of the 2002 Bali bombing. It is argued that online discussion forums are a particularly appropriate source of data from which to analyse Indonesians’ perceptions of the bombers, as these forums are widely thought to be representative of a new public sphere that allows for political debate and participation. From discussions between July 2008 and January 2009, the article outlines how the bombers were constructed as heroes and anti-heroes by different members of different forums. Drawing on a cultural sociological perspective, the article highlights the importance of understanding the reputation of individual terrorists, and the influence of established heroic types in understanding contemporary conflict in Indonesian society.</p><p>[Artikel ini membahas konsepsi kepahlawanan teroris, dukungan, dan simpati terhadap terorisme di Indonesia dengan melakukan analisis isi terhadap forum diskusi online terkait dengan peristiwa Bom Bali tahun 2002.

Abstract:
French vaccination policy has recently been the subject of much debate on the advisability and risks of extending the vaccination obligation. The legal provision introducing 11 compulsory vaccines on January 1, 2018 called for the mobilization of different groups of actors (institutional representatives, doctors, researchers, parents’ associations, representatives of pharmaceutical companies, citizens, etc.) often speaking in different arenas. Indeed, if political debates and parliamentary committees are invested by institutional actors and experts, discussion forums and social networks constitute the privileged place of expression of non-institutional actors or lay-experts, who use this space for discussion above all to express their scepticism or their reluctance over vaccines. The objective of this contribution is to analyse on the one hand the forms and mechanisms put in place in the construction of the debate on this social issue and, on the other hand, to highlight the linguistic and argumentative specificities of the discourse of pro-vaccinalists and of the anti-vaccinalists, categories which bring together different actors.

Abstract:
Public health debates in online forums allow the emergence of ordinary practical reasoning about 'official' health information. We used a Discursive Psychology approach to analyse postings in a forum devoted to the discussion of the H1N1 (Swine flu) virus. We identify the discursive practices that contributors use to valorise certain elements in the debate (what they cast as science, rationality and 'proper' scepticism) over others (especially commercial interests, 'charlatanism' and 'profiteering'). A forum participant can be disqualified on the basis of their alleged partiality and interest, if they can be accused of having a commercial stake in the matter. But no such opprobrium results if they have a 'scientific' interest.

Abstract:
Graded online discussion forums allow students to interact with course content, peers, and instructors. These discussions have the potential to enhance students’ learning experiences significantly. By adding graded online discussions to an online structured Master’s program in Education, it was necessary to determine the value of these discussions and their contribution to creating an online community. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to determine how a community of inquiry could support graded online discussions. The study used the Community of Inquiry theoretical framework as its basis. A qualitative exploratory case study design was used, involving eleven purposefully selected participants who were enrolled for a structured master’s program in Education. Data were collected from two sources: feedback from students on their experiences of the online discussions, and the actual online discussions. The data were analyzed using the six-phase thematic analysis approach following a deductive approach. This study revealed that these discussions supported students’ learning and created an online learning community promoting social, cognitive, and teaching presences. These findings have implications for practice. Firstly, fostering social presence is essential for online discussions because it leads to increased engagement, motivation, a sense of belonging, and collaboration. Secondly, online discussions need to be designed with clear guidelines, structured questions, and discussion opportunities. Lastly, online discussions designed to promote cognitive presence challenge students, encourage debate, and assist them in gaining the needed knowledge and higher order thinking skills. Based on these findings, the unique contribution of this study is to provide guidelines for fostering discussion forum participation within the Community of Inquiry (COI) framework. The suggested guidelines can serve as a resource to facilitate effective graded discussion forums in higher education contexts.

Abstract:
While asynchronous discussion forums have been widely implemented across different learning environments, there have been mixed findings in terms of their impact on student performance. This study aims to investigate the impact of an asynchronous lecturer-supported discussion forum used to augment traditional Face-to-Face course delivery, on student performance in a Quantitative Methods course taught to business students in the Caribbean. An asynchronous support discussion forum was set up for a group project designed for students to apply quantitative techniques to solve real-world problems. The quantity and quality of student participation and lecturer participation in the discussion forum, represented by student questions and lecturer questions, were investigated to determine their impact on student performance, measured by group project marks for 109 student groups over three academic years. The results showed that neither student participation nor lecturer participation in the asynchronous support discussion forum led to significantly better student performance by way of group project mark. Possible reasons for this finding that is inconsistent with the literature include issues such as voluntary student participation in the forum, multiple other avenues to obtain lecturer support, and the use of questions to represent participation. The study’s conceptual framework points to the importance of specifying the learning environment, learning objective, discussion forum type and engagement type in examining the impact of a discussion forum.

Abstract:
How can we model arguments and their dynamics in online forum discussions? The meteoric rise of online forums presents researchers across different disciplines with an unprecedented opportunity: we have access to texts containing discourse between groups of users generated in a voluntary and organic fashion. Most prior work so far has focused on classifying individual monological comments as either argumentative or not argumentative. However, few efforts quantify and describe the dialogical processes between users found in online forum discourse: the structure and content of interpersonal argumentation. Modeling dialogical discourse requires the ability to identify the presence of arguments, group them into clusters, and summarize the content and nature of clusters of arguments within a discussion thread in the forum. In this work, we develop ArguSense, a comprehensive and systematic framework for understanding arguments and debate in online forums. Our framework consists of methods for, among other things: (a) detecting argument topics in an unsupervised manner; (b) describing the structure of arguments within threads with powerful visualizations; and (c) quantifying the content and diversity of threads using argument similarity and clustering algorithms. We showcase our approach by analyzing the discussions of four communities on the Reddit platform over a span of 21 months. Specifically, we analyze the structure and content of threads related to GMOs in forums related to agriculture or farming to demonstrate the value of our framework.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Introduction: An Internet-based group of plastic surgeons was formed in India in February 2001. It has 1290 members and seeks to facilitate online discussion. These discussions were reviewed to assess their value in education and aiding patient management. Materials and Methods: All messages and discussions between August 2007 and July 2008 were examined retrospectively. Data were collected regarding topics, replies, and use of clinical images. Results: A total of 2217 messages were exchanged within 330 separate discussions (mean = 6.7 messages per discussion, range = 0–45). A total of 164 discussions contained photographs (50%). Mean number of photographs per discussion was five (range = 0–34). Discussions included requests for advice on complex cases (40%), interesting cases and their management/outcome (25%) and courses/conferences (30%). Topics discussed include training/courses (26.7%), cleft (15.4%), aesthetics (13.1%), trauma (12.5%), head and neck (8.4%), cutaneous (6.4%), perineal/genital reconstruction (6.1%), and scar management (4.7%). Discussion: Forums like this facilitate discussion between individuals in remote locations. They provide easy access to the expertise of a large cohort of highly experienced surgeons. Most discussions were clinical, involving challenging situations. The discussions are open and nonjudgmental, hence encouraging contribution and healthy debate. We encourage its use as an educational tool and a platform for discussion.

Abstract:
Objectives:The aim of this study, in the context of disinvestment related health technology assessment, is to examine whether analysis of Web 2.0—commercial media output, blogs, and discussion forums—can provide an understanding of media framing, community perspectives, and the sociopolitical aspects of an entrenched technology. Methods: Thematic analysis of relevant data from fifty-nine media articles, thirty-nine discussion forums, thirteen blogs, and three Facebook pages relating to our case study: public funding for assisted reproductive technology services. Mainstream media and community-based social media responses were compared. Results:Media responses were narrow, primarily describing emotive individual narratives or the political nexus of interests. Community (including patient) responses were broader including discussion of opportunity cost and vested interests but mostly reflected the polar ends of the debate, diverging strongly for or against disinvestment from public funding.Conclusion:Web2.0 and media analysis offers an inexpensive method to capture media portrayal, divergent community responses both to that portrayal and independent of it, and insight into the sociopolitical aspects of an entrenched technology undergoing disinvestment debate.

The aim of this research was to verify how argumentation occurs in an online educational forum as well as to map the interaction network in the analyzed forum, observing how the discussion was set up in it. The research was held with a group of Práticas de Leitura e Escrita na Contemporaneidade, offered by Secretariat for Education of São Paulo (SEE-SP) in association with Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) in the Post-graduation Program of Applied Linguistics and Language Studies (LAEL). The course was exclusively online and attended by aproximately 10,000 teachers of all disciplines of Basic Education II, teacher-coordinators (PCs), teacher-coordinators and teaching supervisors of the state schools in São Paulo. The theoretical basis that guided the research was divided into three aspects: the first one related to interaction, according to Gunawardena, Lowe and Anderson (1997) and Anderson and Kanuka (1998); the second one related to language analysis in a real context of use, guided by Systemic Functional Linguistics, more precisely by the concept of Contextual Configuration (CC) and generic structure potential (GSP) developed by Halliday e Hasan (1989); and the third one related to argumentation in discussion forums according to the studies of Coffin, Painter and Hewings (2005). Based on the qualitative analysis of the discussion forum, it was possible to verify how interaction and argumentation can relate in the environment. As the interaction develops better, the possibilities of deepening the discussion increase, and, consequently, the chances of developing more argumentative strategies increase too. It was also possible to realize how the articulation between the interaction development and discussion is like in relation to the type of mediation that occurred in the analyzed environment

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Muden is a poor, rural hamlet in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. The sub district of Muden forms part of the Presidential Lead Pilot Land Reform Redistribution Project within KwaZulu Natal. This study analyses the negative impact of the current land reform programme on this rural environment. The research indicates a situation of severe poverty, high dependency, a lack of social infrastructure and a need for strong participatory government at local level. It also shows how existing land reform policies and current development practises are inappropriate within their current context. Proposals are formulated about a possible strategy that can be used to move beyond these problems. This study follows a systematic approach in which the reader is first shown what the facts about land reform within Muden, KwaZulu Natal are, and secondly what challenges are induced by these facts. In each chapter the perspectives are altered to add depth and to illustrate the complexity of the situation. The focus also falls on moments or aspects of crisis and how the different stakeholders have actually responded to these. From a normative perspective, guidelines are identified in a reasoned manner from the discussion in each chapter that help identify what could be done in order to overcome the crisis of development and land reform in Muden. The first chapter introduces the reader to Muden, KwaZulu Natal, through a brief history of the district from a land reform perspective. The reader is given an understanding of the current situation prevailing in the Muden Valley through an explanation of the origins of the conflict over land and other natural resources. In the second chapter the social fabric of Muden is described, considering the perceived ethical dilemma between development and environmental management within the context of land reform. A need for an integrated management strategy emerges. In the third chapter the social lens is exchanged for an environmental perspective, discussing the concept of sustainability in terms of the natural environment. Through a discussion about the quality of life of the people of Muden, both pre and post land reform, Chapter 4 brings together the social and biophysical arguments and makes a case for sustainable development. Against the background of this overview of the current situation of Muden, Chapter 5 is used for a rigorous scrutiny of the current approach to land reform/rural development. In this chapter the critical points of intervention are identified. These are points where decisions have impacted negatively upon the land reform project in the respective stages of project planning and project implementation and how these have contributed to the current crisis within Muden. The final chapter formulates a (hopefully) persuasive proposal towards the establishment of District Development Forums as an alternative approach to the current/conventional approach to land reform /rural development in Muden, KwaZulu Natal. I propose that these forums may form a practical institutional framework which have the potential to move us beyond the present quandaries o f the current land reform/rural development experience.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Muden is ‘n arm landelike dorpie in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Abstract:
This study used a skill theory framework (Fischer & Bidell, 2006) and a microdevelopmental lens to characterize how six grade 8 students' conceptual understanding of conservation of matter changed in the context of a short discussion-based instructional unit. On average, students' conceptual understanding increased significantly, suggesting that a discussion-based approach might be effective in supporting students' learning. The general characteristics of focus students' microdevelopmental pathways were in accordance with those found in other microdevelopmental studies (e.g., Yan & Fischer, 2002), but changes in complexity of misconceptions might be intricately linked to how students learned conservation of matter. The analysis of conversational dimensions suggested that doubting, among other factors, might play an important role in students' learning. This study argues for an integrated microdevelopmental approach that includes conversational dimensions and characterizes changes in the complexity of misconceptions.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter explores discussions surrounding research on the Swedish History Museum’s collection of Viking Age objects on Internet forums, blogs and digital news media during the period 2004–2020. It argues that there has been a clear escalation of questioning, confrontational and antagonistic reactions directed at research that brings into question issues of nationhood and stereotypes of gender roles and power. The discussions evolve around disagreements that focus on details rather than historical synthesis and quickly escalate into hostility, personal attacks and distrust in academic expertise. The debates cast light on the pedagogical challenges the museum face to synthesise and contextualise research to nuance conversations and fulfil its governmentally assigned task to promote knowledge and interest in history.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter focuses on the nature of disinformation (false information spread with intent to deceive) and misinformation (false information spread without specific deceptive intent), inquiring into processes that increase their circulation online. As befits any study of media systems, it addresses interconnections between technologies, media forms, wider media and political environments, people and impacts. It opens with a discussion on the role of deception in citizen-political communications. This highlights the long-standing debate on whether political leaders should lie to their citizens, addressing evidence of such activity in the areas of national security and election campaigns. It then discusses the nature and scale of two key forms of contemporary disinformation: fake news and deepfakes. Widening the focus beyond intentionally deceptive forms to false information in general, the chapter then examines the dynamics of spreading false information online, discussing why people engage with such processes.

Abstract:
Moodle was build up based on socio-constructivist principles and in order to promote collaborative learning. Therefore, the whole concept of the platform focuses on building communities of learning. There are several tools that promote communication in Moodle: from personal messages to chats. Collaborative learning activities include wikies or glossaries, where collaborative materials can be developed by students and teachers. The discussion forums and questions and answers forums facilitate debates, clarifications and exchanges of information and perspectives. The workshops take the collaborative learning to another level, offering peer to peer evaluation. Comments and feedback opportunities are also important in developing a collaborative learning community within a course, responding to surveys and giving feedback to other papers submitend into an Webinar by other students. Thera are many way to keep students attention focussed on a specific topic, but most important is to give the am general outlook of the course in the introduction part. Within Moodle the active and collaborative learning is built around the students perceptions and involvement in activities that strengthens and enhances learning by asking questions and contributing to forum discussions, working with others students on projects, building together course or topic glossary. Explain to students the benefits and the reasons for engaging them in their learning activities. The tutor has to interact with students during activities and stay engaged by all means. Explain the learning outcomes and results, evaluate and track the effectiveness of each activity by analysing the reports and results, give feedback to students after each activity.

Abstract:
National Open University of Nigeria’s (NOUN’s) open courseware has been adjudged a source of dependable open educational resources for students and instructors within and outside the ambit of open and distance learning institutions across Africa and beyond. The development of instructional videos, produced by professionals in every subject area in NOUN has significantly added value to open learning resources. Opening the instructional videos to unrestricted access particularly through social media has been a subject of debate considering the public request and the university’s need to protect the integrity of the videos. Although social media, especially YouTube, house both open and restricted access instructional videos, doubtful sources and questionable contents have made its adoption for open universal education a prolonged challenge. This work surveyed public opinion within and outside Nigeria on how social media could enhance the openness of NOUN’s instructional videos and boost the users’ trust in the contents on social media. Hinging the discussion on Uses and Gratification theoretical analysis, transporting NOUN’s instructional videos to social media was adjudged a welcome development. Substantial empirical deductions from public perceptions of the idea affirmed that the practice would lubricate the public’s interest and confidence in open and distance education.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The Bioengineering Division of ASME has recently undergone considerable discussion regarding the future of programming at the winter meeting (the International Congress — formerly the WAM) and at the Summer Bioengineering meeting. There has been considerable debate as to what is in the best interest of the Bioengineering Division and its members — should the programming stay the same? Should all programming occur only at the summer meeting? Only at the winter meeting? Should the Summer meeting occur annually, rather than every odd year? Should the Bioengineering division program at the winter “slot” jointly with BMES and/or EMBS? Much of these discussions have occurred because some BED members feel that the trend of the division is towards life science oriented papers and that the ASME congress is not well suited for such presentations. Others bemoan the proliferation of scientific meetings which begs the issue of which meeting(s) should be eliminated for the sake of others. A brief presentation of the mechanisms of programming at the ASME congress will take place as well as the history of BED programming at both the winter and summer meetings. Discussions of the pros and cons of continued programming at the winter meeting (the Congress) will follow along with alternatives such as joint programming with other societies. The format of the session will be as follows: • Twenty minute presentation on the current status of programming at the winter and summer meetings • Ten minute question and answer session on current programming • Forty five minute open forum on future programming mechanisms for BED Within this open forum, we hope to hear from all BED members on a number of issues regarding programming. These include the following options: • Continue with the current formats: annual programming at the winter meeting (congress) and biannual programming at the summer meeting. • Programming annually at both the winter and summer meetings • Program biannually at the winter meeting (congress) and program annually at the summer meeting – causes some problems which must be explained • Program annually at the summer meeting and discontinue programming at the winter meeting in lieu of joint programming with another society. • Another programming plan This session will allow a lengthy discussion of BED members regarding the future of programming at ASME and the potential effects on publications in the Journal, in the conference proceedings and on the finances of the Division (as the summer meeting is a major source of income for the division).

Stefanovska, Vesna. "QUEER CRIMINOLOGY: A NEW THEORETICAL DIRECTION OR A PART OF CRITICAL CRIMINOLOGY." In SECURITY HORIZONS. Faculty of Security- Skopje, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.20544/icp.2.4.21.p13.

Full text
Abstract:
The academic discourse about the development and establishment of the foundations of Queer criminology as a theoretical path within critical criminology is associated with several factors. First, the expansion of queer theory within gender studies and the involvement of the queer community in public discourse require a special theoretical explanation within other social sciences that deal with issues related to human behaviour, human rights, punishment, protection, etc. However, the tendency to achieve greater visibility of the queer population through a particular theoretical and research approach rather than within other theories dealing with marginalized communities or certain forms of subcultural behaviour has opened a debate in the academic community as to whether a queer criminology should receive a special theoretical direction or the research on queer population should remain within the framework of the critical cultural criminology, or as part of feminist studies. The stated dilemma, bases and challenges of queer criminology will be the subject of a special elaboration and theoretical discussion within this paper. Key words: Queer criminology, LGBT, Intersectionality, heteronormatively.

Inter-American Development Bank, October 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0006920.

Full text
Abstract:
The World Economic Forum (WEF) views competitiveness as the potential of a country to grow in a sustained way over the medium to long term and thus create prosperity for its citizens. The Global Competitiveness Index (GCI), developed by Professor Xavier Sala-i-Martin of Columbia University together with the WEF, represents a powerful tool to shed light on the complex set of factors, policies, and institutions that determine the level of national productivity and therefore the diverging growth experiences of countries. Identifying the long-term drivers of economic growth becomes even more relevant in the current context of global economic downturn, in which short-term urgencies tend to dominate political debate and political agendas. In this situation, policymakers neglect the longer-term view at their peril, since economies displaying strong competitiveness fundamentals are able to better weather business cycle downturns and ensure that mechanisms enabling solid economic growth going into the future are in place.

Abstract:
The discussion paper presents a summary of health specialist concerns, followed by a summary of concerns for those working on indigenous peoples' issues. The final section attempts to highlight areas of agreement and define questions for debate. In each section, the reader is encouraged to consider at least three levels of analysis: the conceptual framework, the implicit priority setting mechanisms, and technical proposals. Furthermore, it is important to keep in mind at least three different kinds of "health programs": those that aim to make "Western Medicine" available for indigenous peoples; those that aim to support and promote "Indigenous Medicine" (including medications and medical practices); and those that seek to integrate the two.

Abstract:
The importance of consumer involvement in healthcare is widely recognised. Through consultations to elicit views or through collaborative processes, consumers may be involved in developing healthcare policy and research, clinical practice guidelines and patient information material. Consultations can be single or repeated events, and their scale can be large or small. They can involve debate amongst individuals or groups of consumers; and groups can be convened especially for the consultation process or be established by consumer organisations themselves. Consultations can also be organised in different forums and different types of media can be used.

Full text
Abstract:
The issue of agricultural taxation has almost completely disappeared from the scholarly and policy agendas in recent decades. And yet, agriculture is taxed very lightly despite contributing substantially to GDP across many Global South countries today. In some cases, light-touch taxation may be necessary to encourage investment in the sector and to protect small and subsistence farmers. However, anecdotal evidence from countries like Uganda suggests that there are a substantial number of high-income earners engaged in agricultural activities that are sheltered almost completely from any form of taxation. More effectively taxing these high-income earners could provide much-needed resources to finance public service provision in lower-income countries. The time is ripe, this paper argues, to revitalise discussions about how best to tax the agriculture sector.

Full text
Abstract:
Production of liquid biofuels has rapidly increased around the world in recent years. Biofuel production, by its nature, can affect the economy and environment of many countries in different ways. Global Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) analysis is an appropriate approach to study the widespread socio-economic and environmental impacts of bioenergy production. An appropriate benchmark data base including an independent biofuel sector is essential to develop a CGE model for this purpose. This paper represents the first effort aimed at formally introducing liquid biofuels sectors into the version 6 of the GTAP Data Base (Dimaranan, 2007). It builds on the International Energy Agency (IEA) data base, plant-level, biofuel processing models, and the SplitCom program developed by Horridge (2005) to introduce three biofuel sectors into the GTAP Data Base. ----- A discussion thread for this data base is available at: <a href="https://www.gtap.agecon.purdue.edu/forums/post_thread.asp?RefID=199&T_ID=49">www.gtap.org/forums/post_thread.asp?RefID=199&T_ID=49</a>
