Abstract:
Forward operating bases of the Armed Forces are located in remote areas where grid connection is normally not available and if available are vulnerable to outages due to vagaries of weather or action by adversary. Microgrids are generally more efficient and may provide electric power storage for emergency supply of electricity to mission critical equipment like surveillance systems, sensors, communication, command and control systems of such forward bases. Several small independent microgrids can also be interconnected together to satisfy the energy requirements of the remote military areas. Networking of several self-supervised microgrids is being developed with the aim to enhance efficiency, reliability and resiliency as well as the steadiness of power systems. In this work, an interconnection of microgrids at three remote bases of the armed forces is presented and simulated. The proposed power co-ordination strategy is designed in such a way that during peace time operation it tries to minimize the overall requirement of fossil fuel for generators supplying the critical loads and in case of outages, it can tackle the emergency situation by automatically routing the power to critical loads from other operational bases. The entire system has been simulated and verified using MATLAB 2018.

Abstract:
We develop an autoregressive model framework based on the concept of Principal Dynamic Modes (PDMs) for the process of action potential (AP) generation in the excitable neuronal membrane described by the Hodgkin–Huxley (H–H) equations. The model's exogenous input is injected current, and whenever the membrane potential output exceeds a specified threshold, it is fed back as a second input. The PDMs are estimated from the previously developed Nonlinear Autoregressive Volterra (NARV) model, and represent an efficient functional basis for Volterra kernel expansion. The PDM-based model admits a modular representation, consisting of the forward and feedback PDM bases as linear filterbanks for the exogenous and autoregressive inputs, respectively, whose outputs are then fed to a static nonlinearity composed of polynomials operating on the PDM outputs and cross-terms of pair-products of PDM outputs. A two-step procedure for model reduction is performed: first, influential subsets of the forward and feedback PDM bases are identified and selected as the reduced PDM bases. Second, the terms of the static nonlinearity are pruned. The first step reduces model complexity from a total of 65 coefficients to 27, while the second further reduces the model coefficients to only eight. It is demonstrated that the performance cost of model reduction in terms of out-of-sample prediction accuracy is minimal. Unlike the full model, the eight coefficient pruned model can be easily visualized to reveal the essential system components, and thus the data-derived PDM model can yield insight into the underlying system structure and function.

Abstract:
The detecting instrument for surface quality of steel ball bases on embedded control system and image detection technique, and is applied to detect surface defect region of steel ball in bearing. Its control system requires excellent real-time character and control accuracy. This paper puts forward a new design for controller of detecting instrument. We adopted TMS320LF2407A which produced by company TI as main processor, and integrated CPLD to develop an embedded controller. We used the Ziegler–Nichols tuning methods to get PID control and designed hardware circuit. We realized the function of correlative logic elements through programming, and constructed an embedded multitask operating system based on the transplant of μC/OS-II on TMS320LF2407A. It solved problems about intricate structure and bad real-time character existed in traditional control module. The result of simulation and experiment indicates that this control system satisfied excellently the requirement of high speed and real-time image detection.

Abstract:
Remote communities such as rural villages, post-disaster housing camps, and military forward operating bases are often located in remote and hostile areas with limited or no access to established infrastructure grids. Operating these communities with conventional assets requires constant resupply, which yields a significant logistical burden, creates negative environmental impacts, and increases costs. For example, a 2000-member isolated village in northern Canada relying on diesel generators required 8.6 million USD of fuel per year and emitted 8500 tons of carbon dioxide. Remote community planners can mitigate these negative impacts by selecting sustainable technologies that minimize resource consumption and emissions. However, the alternatives often come at a higher procurement cost and mobilization requirement. To assist planners with this challenging task, this paper presents the development of a novel infrastructure sustainability assessment model capable of generating optimal tradeoffs between minimizing environmental impacts and minimizing life-cycle costs over the community’s anticipated lifespan. Model performance was evaluated using a case study of a hypothetical 500-person remote military base with 864 feasible infrastructure portfolios and 48 procedural portfolios. The case study results demonstrated the model’s novel capability to assist planners in identifying optimal combinations of infrastructure alternatives that minimize negative sustainability impacts, leading to remote communities that are more self-sufficient with reduced emissions and costs.

Abstract:
Rehabilitative mobility aids are being used extensively for physically impaired people. Efforts are being made to develop human machine interfaces (HMIs), manipulating the biosignals to better control the electromechanical mobility aids, especially the wheelchairs. Creating precise control commands such as move forward, left, right, backward and stop, via biosignals, in an appropriate HMI is the actual challenge, as the people with a high level of disability (quadriplegia and paralysis, etc.) are unable to drive conventional wheelchairs. Therefore, a novel system driven by optical signals addressing the needs of such a physically impaired population is introduced in this paper. The present system is divided into two parts: the first part comprises of detection of eyeball movements together with the processing of the optical signal, and the second part encompasses the mechanical assembly module, i.e., control of the wheelchair through motor driving circuitry. A web camera is used to capture real-time images. The processor used is Raspberry-Pi with Linux operating system. In order to make the system more congenial and reliable, the voice-controlled mode is incorporated in the wheelchair. To appraise the system’s performance, a basic wheelchair skill test (WST) is carried out. Basic skills like movement on plain and rough surfaces in forward, reverse direction and turning capability were analyzed for easier comparison with other existing wheelchair setups on the bases of controlling mechanisms, compatibility, design models, and usability in diverse conditions. System successfully operates with average response time of 3 s for eye and 3.4 s for voice control mode.

Abstract:
Abstract Combat trauma injuries require urgent and specialized care. When patient evacuation is infeasible, critical life-saving care must be given at the point of injury in real-time and under austere conditions associated to forward operating bases. Surgical telementoring allows local generalists to receive remote instruction from specialists thousands of miles away. However, current telementoring systems have limited annotation capabilities and lack of direct visualization of the future result of the surgical actions by the specialist. The System for Telementoring with Augmented Reality (STAR) is a surgical telementoring platform that improves the transfer of medical expertise by integrating a full-size interaction table for mentors to create graphical annotations, with augmented reality (AR) devices to display surgical annotations directly onto the generalist’s field of view. Along with the explanation of the system’s features, this paper provides results of user studies that validate STAR as a comprehensive AR surgical telementoring platform. In addition, potential future applications of STAR are discussed, which are desired features that state-of-the-art AR medical telementoring platforms should have when combat trauma scenarios are in the spotlight of such technologies.

Regulation of work time for junior doctors and expectations of the public have led to an increasing role for simulation. Now there is even official recognition of 'simulated cases' in trainees' logbooks and as part of their work-based assessments. So, is this revolution for better or for worse? Traditionally surgeons have always advocated dissection, simulation and courses using cadavers. How does operating on cadavers and synthetic models compare? Cadavers can be useful for teaching and appreciating anatomy but how useful are they for simulation of surgical procedures and operations?

Traditional condition monitoring methods are not suitable for the nonlinear operation parameters and time-variable operation conditions. We propose an independent component analysis method based on sliding window statistics (SSWICA). This method uses statistics in sliding windows of parameters as input samples, then uses a N-step forward sliding window ICA method to modeling. Then we monitor the operating state of the equipments by observing whether the SPE index of real-time parameters exceeds the control limits. SSWICA is applied to condition monitoring of condenser in 600MW unit, comparing with traditional ICA monitoring methods based on sliding window. The results show SSWICA can accurately reflect current operating state and related changes of condensers state parameters, recognize steady, unsteady and fault conditions effectively. It is valuable for engineering practice and suitable for the application to equipments condition monitoring in power plant.

Abstract:
With the deregulation of electricity markets, the system operation strategies have changed in recent years. The systems are operated with smaller margins. How to maintain the voltage stability of the power systems have become an important issue. This paper presents an Artificial Feed Forward Neural Network (FFNN) approach for the assessment of power system voltage stability. This paper uses some input feature sets using real power, reactive power, voltage magnitude and phase angle to train the neural network (NN). The target output for each input pattern is obtained by computing the distance to voltage collapse from the current system operating point using a continuation power flow type algorithm. This paper compared different input feature sets and showed that reactive power and the phase angle are the best predictors of voltage stability margin. Further, the paper shows that the proposed ANN based method can successfully estimate the voltage stability margin not only under normal operation but also under N-1 contingency situations. The proposed method has been applied to the IEEE 14 and IEEE 30 bus test system. The continuation power flow technique run with PSAT and the proposed method is implemented in MATLAB.

Abstract:
Fault prewarning is important to guarantee the safe and stable operation of Generator Sets (GS). In order to generate prewarnings quickly and accurately before the failures or faults occur in GS, a real-time fault prewarning approach to GS based on dynamic threshold was put forward. This approach was consisted of five steps, that is operating condition (or abnormal event) synchronous, dynamic threshold selection, threshold analysis, fault detection and fault prewarning. The dynamic threshold (closely related to operating condition or abnormal event of GS) was the key of this approach, which can be obtained by means of expertise knowledge discovery. This approach can effectively reduce false positives and false negatives for the faults of GS, whose effectiveness is validated by the applications and practices of Gezhouba power plant.

Abstract:
One of the promising directions of increasing productivity in forestry production is a systematic approach to specifying the process efficiency of the wheeled forwarder based on constructing a single technological connectivity of all performed operations from the initial “loading” to the final “start of unloading”. System analysis allows to form coherent and flexible technological processes as single space-time production structures. The process efficiency of such structures depends on the extent to which the basis of the system analysis is used in assessing the fleet of forestry equipment or its elements. The basis of the unified connectivity of the discrete operations (the movement of the forest machine along the skidding track from pack to pack, setting the crane to the operating position, moving the grip towards the log, grabbing the log on the ground, sorting the log, aligning the pack, moving the pack into the cargo compartment, placing the log into the cargo compartment, installation of the crane into the transport position, and movement along the skidding track) from the position of the system theory is a representation of the functional time of manufacturing a production unit (1 m3 of wood) by operation and its superposition for all production operations. The superposition builds a single functional time for the integrity of the operations performed, in which the target function of the production structure is efficiently implemented. An analytical study of determining the effective performance in the functional time of the production process of the wheeled forwarder is given from the position of the system analysis. The article examines the timing of the work of the Ponsse Buffalo wheeled forwarder in the most typical natural and industrial conditions of the rental base of the Mondi Syktyvkar JSC (middle taiga of the Komi Republic). The method of calculating the total capacity of the wheeled forwarder as a result of performance of all operations (loading, storage, and transportation to the place of unloading) is proposed. The possibility of applying the proposed method of assessing the wheeled forwarder efficiency is shown in terms of implementation of forecasting the total productivity of the forest machine in the functional time of manufacturing a production unit. The method allows you to choose the directions of increasing the labor productivity by synchronizing the functional time of all production operations.

Besides their usefulness in practical, everyday activities, understanding fractions and operations on fractions underpins the development of proportional reasoning and is critical for learning higher mathematics such as algebra, probability, and calculus and for success in science and engineering. Nevertheless, fractions remain a problematic curricular area in which teachers and students poorly understand and perform. I propose to review literature to understand causes of learners’ conceptual difficulties with fractions and propose an underexplored an instructional scheme based on an epistemological and pedagogical approach informed by theoretical ideas of Vygotsky and Gattegno. Based on work with teachers, I will detail the phases of the instructional scheme and their theoretical and empirical evidence. Results will illustrate how teachers engage learners with manipulatives in the instructional scheme to enable students to construct mathematically sound and robust procedures for operating with fractions.

Abstract The new, original control method of the vibratory conveyor operating on the Frahm's dynamic eliminator basis, is presented in the paper. The proposed method is based on the application of the control of the feed-forward controler, together with the events detection based on the generalised likelihood ratio (GLR) algorithm. Such approach leads to the controller intervention only when it is justified by the current process situation, (e.g. in case of an essential change of the feed mass) to enable the stable machine operations and to limit transient states. The results are presented in a form of numerical simulations.
