Abstract:
Zhongwei station of West to east natural gas pipeline is connected to the north of Zhonggui line, and Guiyang station of China-Myanmar natural gas pipeline is connected to the south, which has important strategic significance in Southwest China. At present, the tie line mainly carries out gas transmission from Zhongwei to Guiyang. Only some pipeline sections and offload stations have reverse transmission function, while all compressor stations have no reverse transmission and pressurization function. In order to evaluate the flexibility of the operation of the Zhonggui line and give some suggestions for the preliminary reconstruction, this paper uses the SPS software to establish the pipeline model and simulate the specific working conditions, focusing on the two working conditions of the intermediate station injection forward transmission and the whole line reverse transmission. Through the simulation, we can get the following conclusions: 1. When the intermediate station injects forward gas transmission, which compressor station, gas transmission range and joint operation condition with China-Myanmar line need to be started for Zhonggui line; 2. When the whole tie line is reversed, it is necessary to change the location of the compressor station with the function of reverse transmission and pressurization. Through this study, we can give some reference and evaluation opinions on the lack of flexibility of the current tie line, and also give some reference opinions on the specific implementation of the improvement of the tie line operation flexibility in the future.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose To evacuate passengers arriving at intercity railway stations efficiently, metros and intercity railways usually share the same station or have stations close to each other. When intercity trains arrive intensively, a great number of passengers will burst into the metro station connecting with the intercity railway station within a short period, while the number of passengers will decrease substantially when intercity trains arrive sparsely. The metro timetables with regular headway currently adopted in real-world operations cannot handle the injected passenger demand properly. Timetable optimization of metro lines connecting with intercity railway stations is essential to improve service quality. Design/methodology/approach Based on arrival times of intercity trains and the entire process for passengers transferring from railway to metro, this paper develops a mathematical model to characterize the time-varying demand of passengers arriving at the platform of a metro station connecting with an intercity railway station. Provided the time-varying passenger demand and capacity of metro trains, a timetable model to optimize train departure time of a bi-direction metro line where an intermediate station connects with an intercity railway station is proposed. The objective is to minimize waiting time of passengers at the connecting station. The proposed timetable model is solved by an adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm. Findings Real-world case studies show that the prediction accuracy of the proposed model on passenger demand at the connecting station is higher than 90%, and the timetable model can reduce waiting time of passengers at the connecting station by 28.47% which is increased by 5% approximately than the calculation results of the generic algorithm. Originality/value This paper puts forward a model to predict the number of passengers arriving at the platform of connection stations via analyzing the entire process for passengers transferring from intercity trains to metros. Also, a timetable optimization model aiming at minimizing passenger waiting time of a metro line where an intermediate station is connected to an intercity railway station is proposed.

For the method calculating the benefits gotten by transferring the wagons at technical stations without sorting operations, two different calculating methods are brought forward at present. This paper firstly calculates the wagon hours consumed both when the basic scheme is applied and the scheme in which the trough wagon flows passing the technical station without shunting operations is applied, and then deduces a formula to calculate the wagon hours saved by through wagon flow passing technical station without sorting operations and analyzes deeply the affecting factors. As a result, it is found that the two calculating methods are the special cases of it. Because in the calculating process the influence of through wagon flow passing the station to the staying time at the station has been taken into account, the method mentioned above is more complete, and could provide a theoretical basis for the calculation.

Abstract:
This paper proposes interference-based decode and forward scheme that utilizes relay stations (RSs). In Long-Term-Evolution (LTE-) Advanced, heterogeneous networks in which femto- and picocells are overlaid onto macrocells are extensively discussed. However, interference between macro- and pico(femto)cells arises due to their different transmit power levels. Unlike conventional cooperative transmission schemes, the RS decodes interference in the first transmit timing period and forwards it to the user equipment (UE) in the second period. Moreover, cooperative transmission can be achieved without stopping the transmission from the base station (BS) to UE when forwarding the interference from the RS to the UE by utilizing the fact that signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) between the RS and UE is much greater than that between the BS and UE. The basic performance of the proposed method is shown based on computer simulation. Moreover, the interference temperature and shadowing effect are measured when considering the coexistence between macro- and femtocells, and the performance of the proposed method is verified using measured shadowing effect.

Abstract:
Energy-efficient and reliable data transmission is a challenging task in wireless relay networks (WRNs). Energy efficiency in cellular networks has received significant attention because of the present need for reduced energy consumption, thereby maintaining the profitability of networks, which in turn makes these networks “greener”. The urban cell topography needs more energy to cover the total area of the cell. The base station does not cover the entire area in a given topography and adding more number of base stations is a cost prohibitive one. Energy-efficient relay placement model which calculates the maximum cell coverage is proposed in this work that covers all sectors and also an energy-efficient incremental redundancy-hybrid automatic repeat request (IR-HARQ) power allocation scheme to improve the reliability of the network by improving the overall network throughput is proposed. An IR-HARQ power allocation method maximizes the average incremental mutual information at each round, and its throughput quickly converges to the ergodic channel capacity as the number of retransmissions increases. Simulation results show that the proposed IR-HARQ power allocation achieves full channel capacity with average transmission delay and maintains good throughput under less power consumption. Also the impact of relaying performance on node distances between relay station and base station as well as between user and relay station and relay height for line of sight conditions are analyzed using full decode and forward (FDF) and partial decode and forward (PDF) relaying schemes. Compared to FDF scheme, PDF scheme provides better performance and allows more freedom in the relay placement for an increase in cell coverage.

Abstract:
Abstract Hydrodynamic models for morphodynamic studies in estuaries require continuous tidal water level data as boundary conditions. However, for the Hooghly estuary in India, measurement of continuous tidal water elevation data at the most downstream point is a very difficult task because of the remote location and the confluence with the deep sea. The tidal water level data at this station are measured for a half tidal cycle which is not useful for hydrodynamic modeling. However, at other upstream stations, tide water level data are measured continuously. Accordingly, in this study, an attempt is made to generate continuous tidal water level data at the remote station, using the data of the neighboring stations as input to an artificial neural network (ANN) model. A three-layered feed-forward backpropagation (FFBP) network with two hidden layers is selected and five different combinations of input vectors are used. Simulated water level data obtained from each model are compared with the observed data graphically as well as by estimating the standard error parameters. The best model suitable for prediction of continuous tidal elevation during any time of the tidal cycle and applicable throughout the year is then identified. It is found that tidal data from the nearest neighboring station are more suitable for training.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) is a hotspot of rapid recent regional ‘climate change’. This has resulted in a 0.4°C rise in sea temperature in the last 50 years, five days of sea ice lost per decade and increased ice scouring in the shallows. The WAP shallows are ideal for studying the biological response to physical change because most known Antarctic species are benthic, physical change occurs mainly in the shallows and most research stations are coastal. Studies at Rothera Station have found increased benthic disturbance with losses of winter sea ice and assemblage-level changes coincident with this ice scouring. Such studies are difficult to scale up as they depend on SCUBA diving – a very spatially limited technique. Here we report attempts to broaden the understanding of benthic ecosystem responses to physical change by replicating the Rothera experimental grids at Carlini Station through collaboration between the UK, Argentina and Germany across Signy, Rothera and Carlini stations. We argue that such collaborations are the way forward towards understanding the big picture of biota responses to physical climate changes at a regional scale.

Abstract:
We have developed rapid 3-D dc resistivity forward modeling and inversion algorithms that use conjugate gradient relaxation techniques. In the forward network modeling calculation, an incomplete Cholesky decomposition for preconditioning and sparse matrix routines combine to produce a fast and efficient algorithm (approximately 2 minutes CPU time on a Sun SPARC‐station 2 for 50 × 50 × 20 blocks). The side and bottom boundary conditions are scaled impedance conditions that take into account the local current flow at the boundaries as a result of any configuration of current sources. For the inversion, conjugate gradient relaxation is used to solve the maximum likelihood inverse equations. Since conjugate gradient techniques only require the results of the sensitivity matrix [Formula: see text] or its transpose [Formula: see text] multiplying a vector, we are able to bypass the actual computation of the sensitivity matrix and the inversion of [Formula: see text], thus greatly decreasing the time needed to do 3-D inversions. We demonstrate 3-D resistivity tomographic imaging using pole‐pole resistivity data collected during an experiment for a leakage monitoring system near evaporation ponds at the Mojave Generating Station in Laughlin, Nevada.

Abstract:
In the global positioning system (GPS) denied environment, an indoor positioning system based on ultra-wide band (UWB) technology has been utilized for target location and navigation. It can provide a more accurate positioning measurement than those based on received signal strength (RSS). Although promising, it suffers from some shortcomings that base stations should be preinstalled to obtain reference coordinate information, just as navigation satellites in the GPS system. In order to improve the positioning accuracy, a large number of base stations should be preinstalled and assigned coordinates in the large-scale network. However, the coordinate setup process of the base stations is cumbersome, time consuming, and laborious. For a class of linear network topology, a semi-autonomous coordinate configuration technology of base stations is designed, which refers to three conceptions of segmentation, virtual triangle, and bidirectional calculation. It consists of two stages in every segment: Forward and backward. In the forward stage, it utilizes the manual coordinate setup method to deal with the foremost two base stations, and then the remaining base stations autonomously calculate their coordinates by building the virtual triangle train. In the backward stage, the reverse operation is performed, but the foremost two base stations of the next segment should be used as the head. In the last segment, the last two base stations should be used as the head. Integrating forward and backward data, the base stations could improve their location accuracy. It is shown that our algorithm is feasible and practical in simulation results and can dramatically reduce the system configuration time. In addition, the error and maximum base station number for one segment caused by our algorithm are discussed theoretically.

Abstract:
This paper demonstrates the application of different artificial neural network (ANN) techniques for the estimation of monthly streamflows. In the first part of the study, three different ANN techniques, namely, feed forward neural networks (FFNN), generalized regression neural networks (GRNN) and radial basis ANN (RBF) are used in one-month ahead streamflow forecasting and the results are evaluated. Monthly flow data from two stations, Gerdelli Station on Canakdere River and Isakoy Station on Goksudere River, in the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey are used in the study. Based on the results, the GRNN was found to be better than the other ANN techniques in monthly flow forecasting. The effect of periodicity on the model's forecasting performance was also investigated. In the second part of the study, the performance of the ANN techniques was tested for river flow estimation using data from the nearby river.

Abstract:
Robotic total stations have been widely used in continuous automatic monitoring of dam deformations. In this regard, monitoring accuracy is an important factor affecting deformation analysis. First the displacements calculation methods for dam deformation monitoring with total stations are presented, and the corresponding mean square error formulas are derived. Then for errors caused by atmospheric refraction, two correction methods are described. Simulations were conducted to compare the displacement accuracy calculated through different methods. It indicated that the difference between polar coordinate method and forward intersection is less than 0.5mm within around 400m’ monitoring range, and in such cases, the polar coordinate method is preferred, as only one total station is required. Refraction correction tests with observations from two dams demonstrated that both correction methods could effectively enhance the monitoring accuracy. For observation correction, correction through the closest reference point achieves better correction results.

Abstract:
During the decade of research, the Research Institute “Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory” (RI “MAO”) developed hardware and software for monitoring, extracting, and calculating the parameters of meteor phenomena using the forward scattering by meteor ionized trail of the signals of over-the-horizon FM-stations broadcasted in the frequency range of 88—108 MHz. This allowed creating a network of observations of meteor phenomena in the radio range, which consists of six stations located in Mykolaiv (three stations), Rivne, Lviv, and Hlukhiv. The stations have identical hardware and software. Yagi-Uda antennas with six or eight horizontal vibrators and SDR receivers based at RTR2832U microchip are used to receive radio signals. The station software performs continuous registration and analysis of received radio signals at the output of quadrature detectors of the receivers, automatic detection of moments of appearances of meteor reflections, formation, and sending by e-mail daily reports on detected meteor phenomena. Equipment setup and current monitoring of stations operations are carried out by the RI «MAO» using remote access to station computers via the Internet. Monthly reports on the number of meteor events recorded by each station are posted on the site of Radio Meteor Observation Bulletin (RMOB). The article presents the results, obtained by the network in 2017—2019, confirming a correspondence of daily variations in the number of meteors registered by network stations, to the known dependence (observation of meteors in the apex and antapex), as well as a correspondence between the expected characteristics (in time and intensity) of three meteor showers (Perseids, Geminids and Quadrantids) and that had been obtained by the network. Recommendations are also given in the article for additional research aimed at achieving the main goal, namely, expanding information about meteor phenomena, including the estimating of kinematic parameters (velocities, radiants) of meteoroids and their relationship with potentially hazardous asteroids.

Abstract:
This paper mainly forecasts the short-term passenger flow of regional bus stations based on the integrated circuit (IC) card data of bus stations and puts forward an early warning model for regional bus passenger flow. Firstly, the bus stations were aggregated into virtual regional bus stations. Then, the short-term passenger flow of regional bus stations was predicted by the machine learning (ML) method of support vector machine (SVM). On this basis, the early warning model for regional bus passenger flow was developed through the capacity analysis of regional bus stations. The results show that the prediction accuracy of short-term passenger flow could be improved by replacing actual bus stations with virtual regional bus stations because the passenger flow of regional bus stations is more stable than that of a single bus station. The accurate prediction and early warning of regional bus passenger flow enable urban bus dispatchers to maintain effective control of urban public transport, especially during special and large-scale activities.

Abstract:
Abstract This study presents a gridded meteorology intercomparison using the State of Hawaii as a testbed. This is motivated by the goal to provide the broad user community with knowledge of interproduct differences and the reasons differences exist. More generally, the challenge of generating station-based gridded meteorological surfaces and the difficulties in attributing interproduct differences to specific methodological decisions are demonstrated. Hawaii is a useful testbed because it is traditionally underserved, yet meteorologically interesting and complex. In addition, several climatological and daily gridded meteorology datasets are now available, which are used extensively by the applications modeling community, thus an intercomparison enhances Hawaiian specific capabilities. We compare PRISM climatology and three daily datasets: new datasets from the University of Hawai‘i and the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and Daymet version 3 for precipitation and temperature variables only. General conclusions that have emerged are 1) differences in input station data significantly influence the product differences, 2) explicit prediction of precipitation occurrence is crucial across multiple metrics, and 3) attribution of differences to specific methodological choices is difficult and limits the usefulness of intercomparisons. Because generating gridded meteorological fields is an elaborate process with many methodological choices interacting in complex ways, future work should 1) develop modular frameworks that allows users to easily examine the breadth of methodological choices, 2) collate available nontraditional high-quality observational datasets for true out-of-sample validation and make them publicly available, and 3) define benchmarks of acceptable performance for methodological components and products.
