Abstract:
In this paper, we use a direct and specific way of finding a General Asymptotic Representation of Kakwani welfare index. The Kakwani measure includes the Sen index and the Foster-Thorbecke-Geer index. A GAR for Kakwani has been derived in Lo (2013) as a particular case of the GAR of the General Poverty index. However that general approach uses highly mathematical tools. But that approach does not use the fep-lrfep method as exposed in \cite{loFepLrepMethod}. So, a direct treatment based on the new unified formulation is to be considered and that would serve as a validation o

Abstract. We assume the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke (FGT) poverty index as an empirical process indexed by a particular Glivenko-Cantelli class or collection of functions and define this poverty index as a functional empirical process of the bootstrap type, to show that the outer almost sure convergence of the FGT empirical process is a necessary and sufficient condition for the outer almost sure convergence of the FGT bootstrap empirical process; that is: both processes are asymptotically equivalent respect to this type of convergence.

This work aimed to analyze the causality between corruption and poverty in Brazil and a group of seven other South American countries, from 2002 to 2018, using the methodology applied by Dumitrescu and Hurlin (2012) for heterogeneous panels. The variables for corruption employed are the Corruption Perception Index (CPI)and the Control of Corruption (CC) index and, as measures of poverty, the indexes proposed by Foster, Greer, and Thorbecke (1984), considering the poverty and extreme poverty lines. Results suggest one-directional CC causality for all measures of the poverty line, as well as for

In this paper we propose an estimator of Foster, Greer and Thorbecke class of poverty measures. The new estimator is constructed with adaptive kernel and the bandwidth of the new improvement is obtained depending on the range of the observations. Simulated example is presented, including comparisons with four others estimators. The performance of the proposed new estimator is evaluated via the variance and the mean square error criterion. The results of the simulation study are very promising; they show that our modified estimator performs well in all cases.

Poverty is a central issue in development programs in Indonesia. Most people still depend on agriculture for their livelihoods with relatively low productivity and business income, so poverty are common in rural areas. Most of the Wonogiri residents work in agriculture, where one of the superior products is cassava, the largest producer in Central Java. Poverty reduction in agriculture is a critical factor in reducing poverty in Indonesia. This study examined the poverty status and determinants affecting the poverty status of cassava farmers in Wonogiri Regency, Indonesia. Purposive sampling t

ABSTRACTThe paper presents the effects of Mexico’s conditioned cash-transfers programme (PROSPERA programme, formerly Oportunidades) on household poverty in the Northeast urban areas. The estimate was calculated using the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke Index. We use three poverty lines (i.e. food, capability, and patrimonial poverty) which costs were established by the National Assessment Council of the Social Development Policy. The results show that, in the three lines, the intensity and inequality of poverty diminished. Regarding incidence, only in extreme poverty was found a significant effect, so

This paper analyses rural poverty in Ethiopia using the 1997 round of household survey data from the Ethiopian Rural Household Survey. Poverty measurements are estimated using a consumption based two-step procedure through the implementation of the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke model. The results indicate that the incidence of rural poverty is high for villages that have lower conditions for agriculture. These findings imply that poverty reduction can be possible through effective policies toward improving the conditions for agriculture in the rural areas. Moreover, examination of the connection betw

This study examines how the smoking behavior of household head impacts the food insecurity status of household in South Africa, with a focus on smoking behavior transition. The study used the fifth wave of the 2017 National Income Dynamics Study survey. Additionally, the smoking transition variable was computed using smoking status in waves 3 and 5 of the survey. Foster-Greer-Thorbecke food insecurity index, descriptive statistics, and logit regression techniques were deployed in the study. Surprisingly, the analysis shows that households headed by current smokers have a lower prevalence of fo
