Abstract:
The south Kalimantan Province has various soil characteristic, the difference of ground water level included . Experimental modeling of foot plate foundations in various ground water level is too difficult to be performed. There were so many variables that need to be evaluated in the modeling. The numerical model was based on finite element method such in Abaqus allowed the modeling of foot plate foundations with the various of ground water level. This study modeled the foot plate foundation structure where located on various ground water level by giving variations of the effect of water level to the elevation of the foundation. Water level variations are determined successively below the foundation elevation, the same as the foundation elevation and above the foundation elevation. The analysis performed is static structure analysis with idealization of 2D shell idealization. The result of the research showed that the ground water level effect the stress and deformation of soil closed to foundation elevation. The stress had been evaluated at the base of the foundation for each ground water level difference correspondently 16,53 MPa, 9.34 MPa and 3.59 MPa. The lowest stresses was occured in ground water elevation above the foundation elevation (78.28%).

Abstract:
The foundations that serve together with the soils of the foundations of buildings and structures are directly or indirectly borrowed by Man from what was created in Nature - supports of her living and non-living creations: the feet of Man or animals, the roots of plants. Different types of foundations have their counterparts in nature. It is interesting to see how and why these or other forms of Supports appeared, their sizes, how they change, adapt to changes in the environment during the existence of the creation of Nature. And how a Man can use the finds of Nature in his activities in the design of foundations and even buildings and structures. Examples are a pillar foundation that can be cut from a person’s foot; slab foundation - paws of waterfowl; Pile foundation essentially has much in common with the legs of hoofed animals. The heat-insulated foundation can be compared with the paws of a polar bear, whose feet are “lined” with fur. Particular attention is paid to the root system of the tree, which can be considered an ideal foundation. The ability of various trees to adapt to the terrain on which it grows is an example of a possible approach to designing rational types of foundations. The principle of inclusion in the work under the loads of the soil surrounding the root system is implemented in the Tree. At the same time, the roots “reinforce” the surrounding soil, create from it a single system, which perceives the loads acting on the tree. Such an approach is implemented, for example, when constructing foundations or hardening soils using the geotechnogenic system.

Abstract:
Background: Congenital foot anomalies affect a large number of childrenthroughout the world. Rehabilitation of these anomalies is expensive and time consuming. There are many factors responsible for these anomalies. Incidence of these anomalies variesin different areas of the world. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of congenitalfoot anomalies among children reporting at Chal foundation, Swabi, Pakistan. Study Design: Across sectional descriptive study. Setting: Chal Foundation, Swabi, Pakistan. Period: October2012 – October 2014. Methodology: Sample was selected using the convenience samplingtechnique. A total of 1141 patients visited the center, out of which 408 cases of congenitalfoot anomalies. Patient demographics including name, age, gender and district along withdiagnosis and side involvement was noted, and analyzed on SPSS v21.0. Results: A sampleof 408 patients was taken from which 70.3% were males and 29.7% were females. The meanage of the patients was 4.47 years at the time of visit. Only 5.9% cases were reported within thefirst year after birth. Right side foot anomaly was observed in 23.8% cases and 20.3% caseshad left side foot anomaly. Bilateral anomaly was observed in 55.9% cases. Among the 408cases, the most often reported was CTEV, observed in 79.7% cases. The second most commonanomaly was pes planus, observed in 8.8% cases. Conclusion: Congenital foot anomalies arecommon musculoskeletal anomalies affecting a large number of children, the most prevalentof which is CTEV. Unfortunately few people seek management in time either due to lack offacilities or awareness. Prevalent cousin marriages in the society may also play an influentialrole in increased risk of such anomalies to occur. Many of these anomalies can be managedconservatively with physical therapy and orthotics if reported in due time. Attention should bepaid on educating people regarding identification and timely management of such conditions.

Abstract:
In soft ground tunnels, feet-lock pipes have been widely used to decrease the concentration of load and settlement at the foot of steel ribs. This paper presents an analytical method to predict the vertical load and settlement at the foot of steel ribs with the support of the feet-lock pipe. First, the mechanical model of a steel rib and feet-lock pipe combined structure involving the ground reaction at the foot was proposed. In this model, the deformation compatibility among the steel rib, the feet-lock pipe, and the ground at the tunnel foot were considered, and an elastic foundation beam model with double parameter for the feet-lock pipe was proposed. Then, based on the proposed mechanical model, the analytical equations for predicting the vertical load and settlement at the foot of the steel rib were derived using structural analysis and beam theory on elastic foundation. The predicted vertical loads and settlements were validated by comparing with the results of field measurements and the Winkler foundation beam model for the feet-lock pipe, and the results show that the feet-lock pipe can effectively reduce the load acting on the ground, where the steel rib was installed, and finally improve the stability of the tunnel structure.

Tomorrow's Doctors was first published by the General Medical Council (GMC) in 1993. The recommendations provide a framework for UK medical schools to use to design detailed curricula and schemes of assessment in the training of future doctors. They also set out the minimum standards that are used to judge the quality of undergraduate teaching. In 2003 this guidance was revised and a further 2009 version has now been published. A constant feature of these important documents is a list of therapeutic procedures that all graduates are expected be able to perform safely and effectively. These include male and female urethral catheterisation.

Dolman, Robin Claire. "Beliefs of South Africans regarding food and cardiovascular health / R.C. Dolman." Thesis, North-West University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/143.

Abstract:
Motivation Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most important causes of mortality and morbidity in South Africa. The major risk factors are prevalent in both the developed and developing areas of the world, among all social classes, and are of similar public health significance in all countries regardless of their level of development. This indicates that much scope remains for further reducing coronary heart disease (CHD) death rates in developed countries and for preventing the emerging CHD epidemic in poorer nations. This study aims at identifying the beliefs of the South African adult population regarding food and cardiovascular health and to therefore identify target groups for education programs. Objectives To investigate the beliefs of South African adults towards the importance of the link between food and cardiovascular health, especially between the different races, living standards, age and gender groups. Also to determine whether this population looks for the Heart Foundation symbol on food products, as well as where the link between food and heart disease ranks in terms of importance compared to other highly prevalent diseases. Method The design of the study was a randomized cross-sectional study. Trained field workers administrated questionnaires by conducting face-to-face interviews with consumers in the language of their choice. Two thousand South African individuals (1 6 years and older) were randomly selected from metropolitan areas in South Africa. The data was weighted to be representative of the total South African metropolitan consumer population, based on gender, age and race distribution (n=10 695 000). The total population was representative of both genders (5 423 000 men and 5 272 000 women) and major race groups (2 615 000 whites, 6 252 000 blacks, 1 255 000 coloureds and 573 000 Indians), from different age and living standards groups. The market research group, MARKINOR, was contracted to collect the data. Quantitive data was statistically analysed in order to generate the relevant descriptive statistics, cross tabulations and statistical tests. Results The majority of the population found the link between food and cardiovascular risk related health issues to be important, especially the higher LSM groups within the different race groups. The link between food and weight loss was considered the least important compared to other cardiovascular risk factors (cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, healthy blood vessels). Only 35% of the study population agreed with the statement that they look for the Heart Foundation symbol, while 46% disagreed with the statement. There was a greater tendency for the higher LSM groups to look for the Heart Foundation symbol than the lower LSM groups. Heart disease was considered just as important and in some cases more important when compared with HIVIAIDS and cancer. Conclusions This study shows that the metropolitan South African adult population is aware of the importance of food on CVD. Nutritional education needs to be aimed at both genders and all ages of the lower socio-economic groups of South Africa. The reasons why such a large percentage of the South African metropolitan adults do not look for the Heart Foundation symbol, or are undecided about it, needs to be investigated and addressed. Prevention programs promoting a healthy lifestyle, which would address the risk factors associated with CVD, should be received with a positive attitude.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to understand the present food situation in Tucson, AZ and the implications for the city’s December 2015 UNESCO International City of Gastronomy designation. Through qualitative research and feminist methodologies, this thesis raises the voices of leaders within the Tucson food system to gain deeper insight into how to work towards a more socially just food system, and why this is important. In the hope that this thesis can be used as an advocacy tool for policy-makers and grassroots leadership, the topics addressed cover food justice and security through representation for the underrepresented, culturally significant food access, and long-term solutions. By understanding how the local government has made space for the designation, this thesis provides ideas that the local government should encompass in order to move forward in allowing the designation to positively impact the Tucson food system and the groups it currently inequitably affects.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to discuss the extent to which the Circular Economy (CE) can be useful in combating food waste (FW). After a non-systematic reviewing of the literature on the concepts of CE, Waste and Food Losses and on the relationship between both, we relied on a case study - the Cooperativa Fruta Feia - to implement the discussion on the contribution of CE to the reduction of FW. We conclude that CE contributes to the reduction of FW.

Abstract This paper presents an numerical study on a large unanchored open-topped steel tank. The buckling behaviors of the tank are analyzed using the finite element computer package ANSYS by means of nonlinear stabilization algorithm. The effects of foundation harmonic settlement on the elephant foot buckling strength of large unanchored open-topped oil storage tanks with tapered shells under axial compression are explored by numerical modeling. Various items of actual geometrical structure which involve concrete ringwall foundation of tank, unanchored bottom with slope, shell tapering from the base to the top, wind girders and supports, top angles, stiffening rings and support plates are presented thoroughly in the non-symmetrical 3D finite element model. Geometric nonlinearity, nonlinear boundary conditions and elastic plastic material of Ramberg-Osgood model are involved simultaneously in simulate course. The obtained solutions are displayed graphically for selected values of system parameters: harmonic settlement amplitude, harmonic number, and critical buckling stress of axially compressed oil tank. The results will provide insights into the relationship between foundation harmonic settlement and buckling strength of the large cylinders.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a three-row opposed gripping mechanism with radial configuration for wall-climbing robots inspired by the structure of the gripper of LEMUR IIB. The mechanism builds upon a kind of microspines for climbing robots. This work utilizes an opposed spoke configuration with 3 rows of 31 microspines on each linkage array, splayed around a central bracket. A single motor drives the 3 linkage arrays by a set of gears to achieve attachment and detachment procedures, and the trajectory of each linkage array tip makes the miniature spines easy to penetrate in and pull off the surfaces. The mechanism designed as a foot of climbing robots can vertically resist at least 1kg of load on rough surface. The findings provide a foundation for constructing a system for a rough-wall-climbing robot.

Abstract:
Abstract Damage and influences to oil tanks caused by severe strong ground motion due to a large earthquake (Mw6.6) that occurred in the district of Iburi-tobu, Hokkaido, Japan on September 6, 2018 are reported in this paper. In the vicinity of the seismic source region, two large-scale crude-oil storage bases are located. The neighboring two bases had in total 86 large oil storage tanks with a capacity of 115,000 m3. The oil storage bases were hit by strong ground motion with peak ground accelerations of 590 to 1,570 cm/s2 and with peak ground velocities of 50 to 80 cm/s. Shell plates of a small bunker A tank with a capacity of 306 m3 suffered diamond buckling and elephant-foot buckling. No large oil storage tanks lost their function of oil storage despite of the severe strong ground motion. However, most of them splashed oil from the gap between the floating roof and the shell plate, and many of them had damage to their pontoons, gauge poles, guide poles, rolling ladders, liquid-level meters, and shoulders of foundation. One of the 115,000-m3-in-capacity tanks was equipped with a displacement gauge system to measure uplift of the bottom of the shell plate from the shoulder of tank foundation. The system recorded a maximum uplift of 4.4 cm. This is the world’s first record of uplift of a large tank caused by a natural earthquake.

Abstract:
In this article the author argues that LIS has suffered from lack of theoretical foundation. Recently many experts have tried to find a theoretical basis for the subject. Nevertheless they are not satisfied yet and they have not achieved to a consensus. The author argues that it is because they stood on a wrong foot. Content analysis is the main approach to this paper. The author believes that there may be found a powerful theoretical basis for LIS through the retrieval of information and knowledge. The value of this argument is that LIS may obtain a good basis on subject, problems and principles. The author although has had a definition which is newly published (2008) now has changed his mind and proposed a new one. He argues that according to traditional teachings that every scientific discipline must bear a subject, objective and problems, with this new definition all are present and can be well justified.

Zand, Benjamin B. "Vehicle Load Distribution Under Timber Mats and Flexible Slab." In 2020 13th International Pipeline Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ipc2020-9599.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Pipeline operators commonly use means of temporary crossing such as timber-mat, airbridge, and slab to reduce surface loading induced stresses in a buried pipeline at locations where a heavy vehicle crosses the buried pipeline. When a temporary crossing has a continuous contact with soil, (e.g. timber mat, flexible slab) load distribution over the ground surface is not immediately known. Load distribution under a timber-mat or flexible slab is a function of the slab to soil stiffness ratio. The load distribution tends to become more uniform with increasing timber-mat or slab stiffness. In this work an analytical model using beam-on-elastic-foundation has been developed and Laplace transform has been utilized to find the solution and apply free-end boundary conditions. The analytical solution can be used for any arbitrary load distribution over a beam-on-elastic foundation. In this work the solution for a point load and a partially distributed uniform load were employed as these scenarios can accurately represent conventional vehicle foot-prints, while being computationally efficient. The analytical solutions are compared to finite element analysis to validate the model. This model can be used in conjunction with the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA) surface loading calculator (or similar tools) to analyze pipeline encroachment problems when means of temporary crossing is installed. This model can help the operators determine dimensions and bending stiffness of timber-mat or flexible slab to assure a desirable load distribution will be achieved. The model can also be used for structural analysis of a timber-mat or flexible slab under vehicular load.

Enhancing Livelihoods Fund: Final report. Oxfam, January 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21201/2021.7253.

Full text
Abstract:
Over a quarter of the world’s population makes a living farming and working on small areas of land. These smallholder farmers contribute significantly to global food supply chains, but despite this make up a large proportion of the world’s poorest people, with many living on less than $2 a day. Between 2015 and 2020, Oxfam, Unilever and the Ford Foundation worked in close partnership on a joint initiative, the Enhancing Livelihoods Fund (ELF). The fund’s main objective was to improve the livelihoods of smallholders linked to Unilever’s extended value chains. It focused in particular on women, innovative pilots and learning. This report highlights key results and lessons learned. It is intended for NGOs, companies and donors who have an interest in improving smallholder-based value chains, especially through multi-stakeholder partnerships between NGOs and the private sector.
