Abstract:
Charitable activities go back to the very beginning of Christianity, but charity institutions were founded since the fourth century. In 321 A.D. the Church was granted testament factio passiva which allowed lay people to cede their property to the Church. In many cases there is no certainty about who the founder of a charity was. However, it is certain that the first founders were bishops. The earliest information about lay founders date back to the first half of the fourth century in the East and the end of the fourth century in the West. The historical sources of the following centuries are more numerous. Also, imperial constitutions, many of which were issued by Justinian, were the proof of charities founded by lay people and they functioned as a safeguard of the instructions concerning charitable activities. Lay founders were given a legal guarantee to run the charity they founded. However, the legal status of the charitable institutions of that time is still a matter of argument.

Abstract:
For many founders of family firms, the decision to retire and relinquish control of the business to their offspring is difficult. Pierre Peladeau founded Quebecor Inc., a family business and a communications leader in the new economy. The present research describes the reluctance of the founder to let go of the business to his offspring and the succession process after the death of the founder. The methodology employed is a combination of case history and study of public documents. The study underscores the need to manage conflict between family members and to plan for succession for the next generation effectively.

Abstract:
The article analyzes 20 social cooperatives operating in rural areas of the province. Wielkopolska. On the basis of data from the National Court Register, the profile of activity, number of employees, period of activity, founders and financial situation of analyzed entities were examined. The differences in the functioning of social cooperatives, due to the legal status of the founders, were indicated. Among cooperatives founded by legal persons, over half (58%) earned income and employed more than 10 employees. Among the cooperatives founded by physical persons 75% of them reported a loss from their operations, a much lower armount of revenues (63% below the 100 thousand) and the number of employees (average 7).The results showed that cooperatives founded by community with conty have the greatest chance of development.

Abstract:
This study examines accommodationism, a tactic of racial uplift used by black school founders and teachers in the Jim Crow South. For founders, accommodationism was a dangerous process of collaboration, resistance, and compromise. The subject under study is Joseph Winthrop Holley. Born in South Carolina, Holley studied in the North at Phillips Academy and Lincoln University. Despite a liberal education, Holley returned to the South and founded a Bible and industrial school. Holley was the most conservative founder of his day. His life and work take us beyond the Washington–Du Bois paradigm and help to clarify the work and meaning of accommodationism. The study also evaluates the degree to which conservative forms of schooling became a means for social control.

Abstract:
This essay examines three schools in New York City—the City and Country School founded in 1914—and two founded in 1974 and 1984—Central Park East Elementary School 1 and Central Park East Secondary School—with respect to how they reflected Deweyan pedagogic practices and Dewey's belief in democratic education.1 It analyzes whether such pedagogic practices can be maintained over time. City and Country, founded by Caroline Pratt, reflected many of Dewey's ideas and remains true to its founder's vision today. CPE 1 founded by Deborah Meier with five teachers reflected the progressive ideas of its founder, many of which were consistent with Deweyan philosophy. It remains progressive although there have been recent attempts to make it more traditional. CPESS, founded by Deborah Meier, reflected both Deweyan philosophy and the ideas of Theodore Sizer. After Meier left in the 1990s, the school became less progressive and eventually was closed and then reopened as a traditional high school. These histories indicate that Dewey's work on education was at the core of all of these schools’ philosophies and practices. Although there have been uneven successes in keeping Dewey's progressive practices alive, they demonstrate that Dewey's work is relevant and is being practiced today.

Organizations are founded and built by one or a few individuals who may be called founders. A founder who plays an active role in shaping an organization's current and future state and who generates the required human and material sources for the organization can be called an entrepreneur. An entrepreneur who creates an organization to fulfil a social mission can be called a social entrepreneur. In this article, Ranjini Swamy explores some of the motives, attitudes, and abilities of a successful social entrepreneur — Baba Amte. She also discusses in detail the challenges faced by Baba in the process of establishing Anandwan — a home for leprosy patients — and the courage with which he responded to the challenges.

AbstractThis article establishes that the first museum in China was not the Zhendan Museum in Shanghai, founded by the French Jesuit Pierre Marie Heude (1836–1902) in 1868, but the “British Museum in China”, founded in 1829 by three supercargoes of the English East India Company, in Macao, a Portuguese enclave in the Pearl River Delta since c.1577. My research, based on Portuguese, British and American sources, allows us to better understand the context in which the founders of the museum interacted and lived in Macao, how their research and field-work was important for academic British institutions such as the British Museum in London and how the British Museum of Macao was founded and became the first (western-styled) museum in China.

Abstract:
Although researchers have determined that immigrants are valuable to our society and produced several studies that seek to explain immigrant benefits, little has been done to study whether or not immigrant-founded firms outperform native firms. This report determines whether or not immigrant entrepreneurs are good investments from societal, financial and market perspectives. It analyzes the impact of immigrant founders on 2017 Fortune 500 company performance from a societal, investment and market perspectives. To compile the data set, it utilizes immigration classification from the Center for American Entrepreneurship’s report on 2017 Fortune 500 company founders as a means of categorizing firm immigration status. In order to be included in the sample, there were several requirements: firms had to have a publicly listed security with a Capital IQ identification ID. These criteria resulted in 463 firms. Financial performance and innovation data were gathered through Capital IQ. The analysis seeks to prove or disprove immigrant impact on performance in three categories. The first category, social impact, determined whether or not immigrant-founded firms are good societal investments. The second category, financial impact, determined whether or not immigrant-founded firms are good financial investments. The final category, market stability, determined whether or not immigrant-founded firms are good for overall market stability. There were no statistically significant results for the dependent variables that were regressed. The was a range of R Values, regressions we run with both robust precision adjustments, and Winsor control methods were tested to no avail. This leads to the conclusion that immigrant-founded firms are not better investments than native founded firms at the Fortune 500 level. This held true in all models for each of the 3 theses compiled.

Software architectures play a significant role in the development of software-intensive systems in order to allow satisfying both functional and non-functional requirements. In particular, dynamic software architectures have emerged to address characteristics of the contemporary systems that operate on dynamic environments and consequently subjected to changes at runtime. Architecture description languages (ADLs) are used to represent software architectures, producing models that can be used at design time and/or runtime. However, most existing ADLs have limitations in several facets: (i) they are focused on structural, topological aspects of the architecture; (ii) they do not provide an adequate support for representing behavioral aspects of the architecture; (iii) they do not allow describing advanced aspects regarding the dynamics of the architecture; (iv) they are limited with respect to the automated verification of architectural properties and constraints; and (v) they are disconnected from the implementation level, thus entailing inconsistencies between architecture and implementation. In order to tackle these problems, this thesis proposes formally founded framework for dynamic software architectures. Such a framework comprises: (i) ?-ADL, a formal language for describing software architectures under both structural and behavioral viewpoints; (ii) the specification of programmed dynamic reconfiguration operations; (iii) the automated generation of source code from architecture descriptions; and (iv) an approach based on statistical model checking (SMC) to formally express and verify properties in dynamic software architectures. The main contributions brought by the proposed framework are fourfold. First, the ?-ADL language was endowed with architectural-level primitives for describing programmed dynamic reconfigurations. Second, architecture descriptions in ?- ADL are translated towards implementation source code in the Go programming language, thereby contributing to minimize architectural drifts. Third, a novel logic, called DynBLTL, is used to formally express properties in dynamic software architectures. Fourth, a toolchain relying on SMC was built to automate the verification of architectural properties while striving to reduce effort, computational resources, and time for performing such a task. In this work, two wireless sensor network-based systems are used to validate the framework elements.

Abstract:
Dissertação apresentada na Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Computational Logic
The existing implementations of Well Founded Semantics restrict or forbid the use of variables when using negative queries, something which is essential for using logic programming as a programming language. We present a procedure to obtain results under the Well Founded Semantics that removes this constraint by combining two techniques: the transformation presented in [MMNMH08] to obtain from a program its dual and the derivation procedure presented in [PAP+91] to determine if a query belongs or not to the Well Founded Model of a program. Some problems arise during their combination, mainly due to the original environment for which each one was designed: results obtained in the first one obey a variant of Kunen Semantics and non-ground programs are not allowed (or previously grounded) in the second one. Most of these problems were solved by using abductive techniques, which lead us to observe that the existing implementations of abduction in logic programming disallow the use of variables. The reason for that is the impossibility to evaluate non-ground queries, so it seemed interesting to develop an abductive framework making use of our negation system. Both goals are achieved in this thesis: the capability of solving non-ground queries under Well Founded Semantics and the use of variables in abductive logic programming.

Abstract:
This thesis aims at two different goals. First, a uniform presentation of the major relevant research results on EAOP-based expressive aspects. We motivate that these instantiations enable aspects to be defined more concisely and provide better support for formal reasoning over AO programs than standard atomic approaches and other proposed non-atomic approaches. Concretely, four groups of results are presented in order to substantiate these claims: 1. The EAOP model, which features pointcuts defined over the execution history of an underly- ing base program. We present a taxonomy of the major language design issues pertaining to non-atomic aspect languages, such as pointcut expressiveness (e.g., finite-state based, turing- complete) and aspect composition mechanisms (e.g., precedence specifications vs. turing- complete composition programs). 2. Support for the formal definition of aspect-oriented programming based on different seman- tic paradigms (among others, operational semantics and denotation semantics). Furthermore, we have investigated the static analysis of interactions among aspects as well as applicability conditions for aspects. The corresponding foundational work on AOP has also permitted to investigate different weaver definitions that generalize on those used in other approaches. 3. Several instantiations of the EAOP model for aspects concerning sequential program execu- tions, in particular, for component-based and system-level programming. The former has re- sulted in formally-defined notions of aspects for the modification of component protocols, while the latter has shown, in particular that expressive aspects can be implemented in a performance- critical domain with negligible to reasonable overhead. 4. Two instantiations of the EAOP model to distributed and concurrent programming that signifi- cantly increase the abstraction level of aspect definitions by means of domain-specific abstrac- tions.

Conceptual models often capture the invariant aspects of the phenomena we perceive. These invariants may be considered static when they refer to structures we perceive in phenomena at a particular point in time or dynamic/temporal when they refer to regularities across different points in time. While static invariants have received significant attention, dynamics enjoy marginal support in widely-employed techniques such as UML and OCL. This thesis aims at addressing this gap by proposing a technique for the representation of dynamic invariants of subject domains in UML-based conceptual models. For that purpose, a temporal extension of OCL is proposed. It enriches the ontologically well-founded OntoUML profile and enables the expression of a variety of (arbitrary) temporal constraints. The extension is fully implemented in the tool for specification, verification and simulation of enriched OntoUML models.

Zhang, Suihan. "Design of grout curtains under dams founded on rock." Licentiate thesis, KTH, Jord- och bergmekanik, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-294207.

Full text
Abstract:
Grouting has long been implemented as a ground improvement technique to reduce the seepage through the rock mass. Grout curtains are usually constructed under dams as a barrier to prevent leakage from the reservoir. So far, the grout curtains under dams have mainly been designed by using an empirical design approach. However, the empirical approach has its limitations. Generally, the usage of “rules of thumbs” makes the design highly dependent on the experience of the designers. Lack of experience can result in insufficient or over-conservative grout curtains. For example, the stop criteria for the grouting process adopted by the empirical approach can lead to long grouting time and thus becomes inefficient. In addition, high grouting pressure may cause unexpected deformations of the rock and open up new leakage paths. To deal with these limitations, a theory-based design methodology has been developed. Theories on rock grouting developed in recent decades are used to build up the design methodology. In the theory-based design methodology, the grout curtain is treated as a structural component in the dam foundation. The geometry and location of the grout curtain is first designed with respect to three requirements: (i) the hydraulic conductivity reduction, (ii) prevention of erosion of fracture infillings and (iii) optimization of uplift reduction. Grouting work is then designed to obtain the designed geometry of the grout curtain. In the design of the grouting work, analytical calculations are implemented to determine the grouting pressure, grouting time and grout hole layout. The stop criteria are based on the grouting time, which is believed to obtain better efficiency. The principles of the observational method are implemented to deal with the uncertainties involved in the grouting process.  One of the main limitations with the proposed methodology is the limited research on the erosion process of fracture infilling materials in flowing water. To study this issue, coupled numerical analyses are performed to better understand the initiation of erosion of fracture infillings. The results show that the Hjulström and Shields diagram are not appropriate to be used to estimate the incipient motion of fracture infilling materials. Instead, a previous equation derived under laminar flows shows better agreement with the results.

Abstract:
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (AMC, or Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at) believe themselves to be Muslims. The AMC was founded by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad in 1889 as a revival movement within Islam. Unlike all other sects of Islam, they believe that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835–1908) of Qadian (a small town in Gurdaspur district of Punjab, India) is the same promised Messiah who was prophesied by the prophet Muhammad. Other sects believe that the promised Messiah is yet to come and, therefore, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad is a false prophet and his followers are non-Muslims.

Tymoshyk, Mykola. LONDON MAGAZINE «LIBERATION WAY» AND ITS PLACE IN THE HISTORY OF UKRAINIAN JOURNALISM ABROAD. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11057.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the leading Western Ukrainian diaspora journals – London «Liberation Way», founded in January 1949, has become the subject of the study for the first time in journalism. Archival documents and materials of the Ukrainian Publishing Union in London and the British National Library (British Library) were also observed. The peculiarities of the magazine’s formation and the specifics of the editorial policy, founders and publishers are clarified. A group of OUN members who survived Hitler’s concentration camps and ended up in Great Britain after the end of World War II initiated the foundation of the magazine. Until April 1951, including issue 42, the Board of Foreign Parts of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists were the publishers of the magazine. From 1951 to the beginning of 2000 it was a socio-political monthly of the Ukrainian Publishing Union. From the mid-60’s of the twentieth century – a socio-political and scientific-literary monthly. In analyzing the programmatic principles of the magazine, the most acute issues of the Ukrainian national liberation movement, which have long separated the forces of Ukrainian emigration and from which the founders and publishers of the magazine from the beginning had clearly defined positions, namely: ideology of Ukrainian nationalism, the idea of unity of Ukraine and Ukrainians, internal inter-party struggle among Ukrainian emigrants have been singled out. The review and systematization of the thematic palette of the magazine’s publications makes it possible to distinguish the following main semantic accents: the formation of the nationalist movement in exile; historical Ukrainian themes; the situation in sub-Soviet Ukraine; the problem of the unity of Ukrainians in the Western diaspora; mission and tasks of Ukrainian emigration in the context of its responsibilities to the Motherland. It also particularizes the peculiarities of the formation of the author’s assets of the magazine and its place in the history of Ukrainian national journalism.

Abstract:
This paper traces the origins of the New Brazilian Right, regarding the emergence of new leaders, new forms of expression and organization, as well as new sets of ideas, namely libertarianism and anti-globalism. Based on more than thirty in-depth interviews, conducted between 2015 and 2019 with right-wing leaders and activists; on a collection of historical data from right-wing organisations’ archives between 2015 and 2018, and on public data, I argue that this phenomenon started in the mid-2000s, after the onset of a corruption scandal related to the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) and the dissemination of the pioneering social network Orkut in Brazil. This social network, founded in 2004, preceded Facebook’s popularity in Brazil and enabled the creation of alternative and disruptive spaces of debate, referred to here as “counterpublics”. By mid- to late 2010s, during the 2014 protests for the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff and Jair Bolsonaro’s 2018 presidential campaign, this emerging new right would be at full throttle.

Abstract:
In 2015, the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF), together with the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT), the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and other partners, founded the initiative "Strategic Networking Platforms in the Context of Major Societal Challenges", including such a platform on issues of demographic change. The BMBWF has commissioned the Austrian Platform for Interdisciplinary Ageing Issues(ÖPIA) with its implementation. The three-year BMBWF funding for the Ageing Network expired in mid-2019. Therefore, Department V/10 of the BMBWF commissioned Technopolis Group Austria to evaluate the Ageing Network. The aim of this evaluation was to form a basis for the decision on the further funding of the Network Ageing after the expiry of the current contract. To this end, we analysed and evaluated what has been achieved so far and developed recommendations for the future work of the Network Ageing. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
