The management of spent foundry sand (SFS) presents environmental and operational challenges for foundries. According to the European Union, European foundries generate approximately 9 million tonnes of SFS annually, mainly from the production of ferrous castings (iron and steel). Nowadays, around 25% of the spent foundry sand in Europe is recycled for specific applications, primarily in the cement industry. However, the presence of chemical residues limits the application of this solution. A possible alternative for reusing the spent foundry sand is its employment as a raw material in the pro

Abstract A novel approach for treating the uncertainty about the real levels of finished products during production planning and scheduling process is presented in the paper. Interval arithmetic is used to describe uncertainty concerning the production that was planned to cover potential defective products, but meets customer’s quality requirement and can be delivered as fully valuable products. Interval lot sizing and scheduling model to solve this problem is proposed, then a dedicated version of genetic algorithm that is able to deal with interval arithmetic is used to solve the test problem

An occupational health hazard is a condition that causes risk to labour health. The problem may be in a form of mental, physical and psychological in nature. There is a considerable attention for social and economic importance of work received because a primary function of work in any society is to produce and distribute goods and services. In work places, there is a positive influence on health which has not been fully exploited. The development and application of knowledge on work physiology and ergonomics needs to be further benefit the workers’ health. The foundry units are different from

Abstract This study was conducted to recover silica (desilication) as a valuable metalloid from waste foundry sand (WFS) by a leaching process and to find application for desilicated foundry sand (DFS). The leaching time applied was 5 h; 3 M of potassium hydroxide (KOH) was used as a leaching reagent. The agitation speed of 200 rpm and the liquid/solid ratio of 25 were found to be the best conditions for optimum leaching results. A geopolymer from DFS was developed by using NaOH as an alkaline activator. The results obtained showed that the optimum conditions for the synthesis of a geopolymer

In order to fulfill the application requirements of foundry industry, especially for the bulky casting sand, a kind of desiccations resolution using the air heater is put forward. The realization of kernel control units, the temperature collection circuit and the control system algorithm, has been given a detailed description. It is proved by the simulation results in the open environment that, this programming has a more satisfactory response speed and a relatively high degree of coincidence heating curve, and also, it can be better meet the design requirements of the air heater temperature c
