Kopp, Brian. "A Four-State Trellis-Coded 8-PSK Modulation Computer Simulation." International Foundation for Telemetering, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/615225.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 17-20, 1988 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada
The continuing growth of the telecommunications industry has created a steadily increasing need for higher performance communications systems - systems that can transfer data at faster rates while meeting stringent bit error rate requirements. In the case of satellite and mobile communications these same systems must also maintain minimum size and power consumption requirements. To help implement this industry demand computer simulations of communications systems can be a viable tool. Simulators can be used to demonstrate feasibility while maintaining minimum research and development costs during the design phase of these new and more complex communications systems. One type of system where simulation has proved helpful has been trellis-codedmodulation (TCM). This paper documents a simulation of a four-state trellis-coded eight- PSK modulation scheme currently being researched at New Mexico State University (NMSU). In the past simulations of convolutionally coded schemes have used binary symbols in the decoding process. In TCM the Euclidean space components of the modulation scheme are used in place of the binary symbols. The simulator under development incorporates these Euclidean signal components which are taken from an eight-PSK signal constellation. Soft-decision maximum likelihood decoding using trellis trace-back techniques are then applied to the Euclidean signal components to recover the simulated transmitted data. The simulator supplies the user with the number of undetected errors generated during a simulation as well as the bit error rate for a given signal to noise ratio. This simulator is intended to provide an environment for investigating improved communication system designs and it is hoped that the results that are obtained from such telecommunication simulators will help satisfy the ever increasing demands of the telecommunications industry. It should be noted that the research being conducted at NMSU on TCM is being directed by Dr. Frank Carden. The development of the simulator was conducted by the author to assist Dr. Carden in the continuing investigation of TCM.

Bärenz, Manuel. "Topological state sum models in four dimensions, half-twists and their applications." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2017. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/41720/.

Full text
Abstract:
Various mathematical tools are developed with the aim of application in mathematical physics. In the first part, a new state sum model for four-manifolds is introduced which generalises the Crane-Yetter model. It is parametrised by a pivotal functor from a spherical fusion category into a ribbon fusion category. The special case of the Crane-Yetter model for an arbitrary ribbon fusion category C arises when we consider the canonical inclusion C↪Z(C) into the Drinfeld centre as the pivotal functor. The model is defined in terms of handle decompositions of manifolds and thus enjoys a succinct and intuitive graphical calculus, through which concrete calculations become very easy. It gives a chain-mail procedure for the Crane-Yetter model even in the case of a nonmodular category. The nonmodular Crane-Yetter model is then shown to be nontrivial: It depends at least on the fundamental group of the manifold. Relations to the Walker-Wang model and recent calculations of ground state degeneracies are established. The second part develops the theory of involutive monoidal categories and half-twists (which are related to braided and balanced structures) further. Several gaps in the literature are closed and some missing infrastructure is developed. The main novel contribution are ``half-ribbon'' categories, which combine duals - represented by rotations in the plane by π - with half-twists, which are represented by turns of ribbons by π around the vertical axis. Many examples are given, and a general construction of a half-ribbon category is presented, resulting in so-called half-twisted categories.

Abstract:

Every college age student should have the opportunity to attend college and earn a degree, but the fiscal realities for lower income students prevent the majority from attending and the vast majority from completing college, thus perpetuating an intergenerational trend of limited postsecondary education and a likelihood of marginal income and status. Past research studies have shown that, among lower income students, those who receive higher levels of grant funding to offset college expenses are more likely to persist toward completing their educations than those who do not receive the same level of grant funding and thus are forced to rely upon other means, such as student loans or employment, to pay for college. The majority of this research was conducted prior to the recession that began in December 2007 (National Bureau of Economic Research, 2008), which has been more severe and longer lasting than any economic contraction since the Great Depression (Dwyer & Lothian, 2012); more current research is needed to determine whether the educational retention behaviors of lower income students in the current challenging economic climate are positively impacted by grant funding. In this study I used quantitative methods to analyze a specific state policy change to determine whether a significant change in the grant funding provided to lower income students resulted in increased retention rates for these students. This study examines school years from 2006–2010, thus encompassing the recent financial crisis and affording an opportunity to explore the persistence behaviors of lower income students during the greatest financial crisis of modern times. The ultimate purpose of the study is to provide conclusions from the research to postsecondary policy makers in the hopes of informing policy and supporting continuing funding of need-based financial aid for lower income students.

Qu, Zhen, and Ivan B. Djordjevic. "Four-Dimensionally Multiplexed Eight-State Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution Over Turbulent Channels." IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/626439.

Full text
Abstract:
We experimentally demonstrate an eight-state continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) over atmospheric turbulence channels. The high secret key rate (SKR) is enabled by 4-D multiplexing of 96 channels, i.e., six-channel wavelength-division multiplexing, four-channel orbital angular momentum multiplexing, two-channel polarization multiplexing, and two-channel spatial-position multiplexing. The atmospheric turbulence channel is emulated by a spatial light modulator on which a series of azimuthal phase patterns yielding Andrews' spectrum are recorded. A commercial coherent receiver is implemented at Bob's side, followed by a phase noise cancellation stage, where channel transmittance can be monitored accurately and phase noise can be effectively eliminated. Compared to four-state CV-QKD, eight-state CV-QKD protocol potentially provides a better performance by offering higher SKR, better excess noise tolerance, and longer secure transmission distance. In our proposed CV-QKD system, the minimum transmittances of 0.24 and 0.26 are required for OAM states of 2 (or -2) and 6 (or -6), respectively, to guarantee the secure transmission. A maximum SKR of 3.744 Gb/s is experimentally achievable, while a total SKR of 960 Mb/s can be obtained in case of mean channel transmittances.

Abstract:
Across Europe, the welfare state is a focus of social and political contention. Participating in the democratic process offers a means for the public to voice their preferences. However, not everyone participates in politics. Research shows that there are significant participatory inequalities as those with greater socioeconomic resources are more likely to participate in politics. In light of these participatory inequalities, this thesis examines the representativeness of the welfare state preferences of the politically active. The main hypothesis posits that, if less advantaged socioeconomic groups are less likely to participate in politics, the welfare state preferences of the politically active are unlikely to be representative. The thesis brings together the comparative study of participatory inequality and social differences in welfare state preferences to examine data from the European Social Survey (ESS) 2008-09 for Germany, Spain, Sweden and the UK. Latent Class Analysis examines how preferences about the welfare state vary within Europe. By grouping individuals, the analysis shows that within societies there are different views about what should be the responsibilities of government. Using the latent classes, and considering a range of political actions, multivariate regression models show how social inequality determines conflict over the welfare state and transforms into political inequality. The association between preferences and political activity is examined to establish the representativeness of participant preferences. Finally, models combining welfare state preferences, political activity and social position address how social inequality shapes the link between political activity and welfare state preferences. Based on survey data for four European countries, the thesis finds that the politically active are not always representative in their preferences; however, the preference bias of participation varies in direction across countries and forms of political participation. Participatory inequalities do lead to the under-representation of support for the welfare state among the politically active but not in all cases. Examining the social stratification of preferences and participation, the thesis suggests that cross-national variations in the representativeness of participants may result from how preferences and participation are socially stratified. For instance, significant participatory inequalities can occur in contexts where there is less contention over the welfare state. Conversely, contention over the welfare state can coincide with egalitarian patterns of political activity. A concluding proposition is that the factors inhibiting the political participation of the socio-economically disadvantaged may also cultivate weaker levels of support for the welfare state.

This research examines interviews with four public counselors in the State of Rio de Janeiro aiming to analise the construction of their identities through the histories they narrate. The central topic of the interviews is violence against disabled children and adolescents; this research also examines the way public counselors deal with this issue. This is a qualitative research that analyses discourse through a sociointeractional perspective of the narrative analyses. The focus of this work will be on the counselors’ narratives about their lives before and while working as a counselor. This study reveals that narratives are important tools to understand how identities are created and also about the counselors’ work. The narrative analysis leads me to observe that counselors present similarities in social issues and also in defining disability. On the other hand, they show differences related to religious aspects and about initial acceptation of the position at the public councils.

Abstract:
While some states can send men to the moon and back, others cannot even muster the effectiveness to maintain order. Understanding what produces these differences in the capabilities of states to deliver outcomes to their citizens is central to understanding why these outcomes differ across states. But what are the fundamental determinants of state capability? This has not yet been investigated; though previous attempts have been made to understand what the most popular state capability index actually measures, these were made to determine its validity, not its fundamental determinants. I empirically determine that there are four fundamental determinants of a state’s capability to deliver outcomes for its citizens by using a rigorous application of factor analysis to four state capability indexes: Outcomes delivered by a state are determined by the ``Effectiveness'' by which states are able to implement their ``Political Gumption'' (their responsiveness and political resourcefulness to satisfy the demands of their citizens) in the face of pressures, represented by the ``Absence of Internal Pressures'' and ``Popular Support and Absence of External Pressures.'' These determinants drive the differences in the capabilities of states to deliver outcomes for its citizens, and consequently at least partially drive the differences in outcomes across states.

Abstract:
This study provided information for policymakers and practitioners by comparing performance of eighth grade students in 2007 on state standardized reading assessments and by the four census-defined regions identified by NAEP. NCLB required states to set their own performance standards and to create their own data collection instruments resulting in increased transparency of student performance data and a lack of uniform accountability systems. The inability of educators, policy-makers, and the general public to make state-by-state comparisons in the area of reading was the catalyst for the study. NAEP data were collected from NCES and state performance data were collected from the USDOE SY 2006-2007 CSPR to determine if a relationship existed between eighth grade students' state scores and NAEP scores in the four census-defined regions. Data were further disaggregated by low socioeconomic students and by nonwhite students. A regression analysis was statistically significant in predicting: a) the state proficient and above scores from the NAEP proficient and above scores, b) the low socioeconomic state proficient and above scores from the NAEP proficient and above scores in the West census-defined region, and c) the nonwhite state proficient and above scores from the NAEP proficient and above scores in all regions. A regression analysis was not statistically significant in predicting low socioeconomic state proficient and above scores from the low socioeconomic NAEP proficient and above scores in the Midwest, South and Northeast regions.
Ed.D.
Department of Educational Research, Technology and Leadership
Education
Educational Leadership EdD

Pigard, Philipp. "Study of the EWK double Z production in the four leptons final state withthe CMS experiment at the LHC." Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017SACLX039/document.

Abstract:
This thesis reports the first experimental investigation into vector boson scattering (VBS) in the the ZZ channel, where both Z bosons are required to decay into electrons or muons and are accompanied by at least two hadronic jets (ZZjj->lll’l’jj, l=e,mu). VBS is a key process in the elucidating the physics of electroweak symmetry breaking and the role of the recently discovered Higgs boson. The study analyses 35.9fb-1 of proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. A multivariate analysis (MVA) technique is exploited to separate the electroweak signal from the QCD irreducible background and to measure the signal strength mu, that is the ratio of the observed number of events to the standard model expectation. The observed signal strength is mu = 1.39 (+0.86 -65) which excludes the background-only hypothesis at 2.7 standard deviations (1.6 standard deviations expected). Limits on physics beyond the standard model are derived in terms of anomalous quartic gauge couplings in the effective field theory approach, providing the most stringent constraints to date on the couplings for the operators T8 and T9.The ZZjj VBS analysis requires an accurate modelling of the signal and irreducible background processes, going beyond the existing simulations. Extensive work on generating and comparing the theory predictions from several MC event generators is presented. The detailed understanding of the signal and background kinematics is used to develop and systematically optimize a boosted decision tree (BDT) classifier. A matrix-element discriminant is also developed and its classification performance compared to the BDT, finding comparable performance and indicating that the BDT is adequate. The final signal extraction technique via a template fit of all ZZjj events is designed to simultaneously constrain the normalization of the QCD background using the data.Multi-lepton analyses like the search for VBS in the ZZ channel depend on the ability to efficiently reconstruct and identify the final state leptons. This work presents the optimizations on the multivariate electron identification algorithms used in the first data at 13 TeV in 2015. A study on extending the use of tracking information in the MVA resulted in the reduction of the non-prompt electron background by up to 50%. Monitoring changes to the reconstructed electron objects and continuous optimizations allowed to improve or maintain the performance of the electron MVA ID algorithms, despite the harsher pile-up conditions in the 2016 data. The electron efficiency measurements used by the 2016 multi-lepton analyses in CMS are also documented

Klugesherz, Miranda Blaise. "“Four years of ramen and poverty:” using participatory research to examine food insecurity among college students at Kansas State University." Thesis, Kansas State University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/35547.

Full text
Abstract:
Master of Arts
Department of Communications Studies
Timothy J. Shaffer
Defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as “limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods,” food insecurity is a symptom of systematic disempowerment and represents one of the most prevalent social ailments to impact first-world countries. In a county where one in eight individuals does not have regular access to meals, food insecurity is far from a problem typically associated with college students. However, Feeding America, the largest emergency food assistance network in the nation, reports that one out of every ten people they serve is a student. In total, half of all students will find themselves unable to afford to eat at least once within their academic career; consequently, 1 in 4 will drop out. This thesis argues that the voices and narratives of food insecure students have been absent from the very research meant to represent them. Consequently, little is known of the situational nuances that accompany student hunger, reifying the dominant discursive structure. This research employs Photovoice, a participant-led methodology which invites members of marginalized groups to photograph places, things, and events representative of, or crucial to, their daily life. This study examines the narratives of seven college students, ranging from their first-year to PhD status, in an effort to fill the gap in the knowledge regarding student hunger and food insecurity. This research found that students who experience food insecurity engage in self-blaming practices and, thus, do not believe they have the right to be hungry or ask for help. Instead, food-insecure students employ several strategies, including face negotiation and disclosure, to minimize the severity of their situation and mitigate tensions between their health, finances, and convenience. This study concludes with a discussion of implications, limitations and areas for future research.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to identify and compare specific writing assignments provided in the four basal mathematics textbook series, grades six through eight, accepted by the state of Texas in 1990. The student and teachers' editions by each publisher were analyzed (1) for the total number and types of writing assignments provided, (2) to compare how the writing assignments compared with the four purposes of writing mandated in the English Language Arts Framework, Kindergarten through Grade 12 for the state of Texas, (3) to compare how the writing assignments compared with the recommendations for communication opportunities stated in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics for grades five through eight, and (4) to compare the number and types of writing assignments among the four publishers. The total number of writing assignments varied among publishers ranging from 151 to 316 in the student editions and from 147 to 523 in the teacher's editions. The findings of this study indicate that from 80 to 98 percent of the writing assignments in the student editions and from 72 to 96 percent of the writing assignments in the teacher's editions corresponded to the Informative purpose of writing. Very few writing assignments were provided corresponding to the Literary, Expressive, and Persuasive purposes of writing. The writing assignments corresponding to the NCTM recommendations varied among publishers. Writing assignments dealing with modeling mathematical situations ranged from 14 to 66 percent in the student editions and from 24 to 39 percent in the teacher's editions. Writing assignments focusing on understanding and definitions ranged 15 to 61 percent in the student editions and from 31 to 53 percent in the teacher's editions. Writing assignments focusing on interpretation and application ranged from 5 to 29 percent in the student editions and from 10 to 15 percent in the teacher's editions.

Abstract:
In this thesis, physics studies are presented using data collected by the ATLAS detector at CERN on 2012 corresponding to L = 20.3 fb-1, at the LHC \sqrt{s} = 8 TeV. The studies performed refer to the identification of events in final states with two Z bosons decaying to four leptons (electrons, muons). Furthermore, the effect of QED radiative corrections in the Z -> ll process and the muon reconstruction efficiency in the forward region of the ATLAS detector have been studied. The first study is the cross-section of the Double Drell-Yan process Z+Z -> 4l. The cross-section is measured to be 0.75^{+0.51}_{-0.44}(stat)^{+0.18}_{-0.16}(syst.) fb. Due to the large uncertainties a 95% CL upper limit in the cross-section is set of 1.54 fb. This result is converted to a 95% CL lower limit on the phenomelogical factor σeff of 0.40 mb. The second study is the search for an additional heavy Higgs boson in the H -> ZZ -> 4l final state. The search is performed in the mass range between 140 - 1000 TeV. No significant excess in data with respect to the background expectations are observed, and upper limits are set on the production cross-sections for all the mass points. The cross-section x branching ratio limits are extracted independently for the gluon-gluon fusion (ggF) and vector-boson fusion (VBF) production mechanisms. Additionally, the effect of non-collinear QED radiative corrections is examined in the H->ZZ->4l. QED Final State Radiation (FSR) of leptons originating from Z bosons is reconstructed focusing on non-collinear radiation from the lepton. The photons are reconstructed with high efficiency and purity looking at Z -> μμ and Z -> ee events in the 2012 data. At the ATLAS Run-I 2012 H -> ZZ->4l mass measurement, 2 out of 30 Higgs candidates in the signal window (120-130 GeV) had their final invariant mass corrected for non-collinear FSR effects. Lastly, the reconstruction performance of muons in the forward pseudorapidity region of the detector is examined in the 2012 data Z -> μμ decays. The study focuses on the region 2.5 < |η| < 2.7$. The reconstruction efficiency is at the level of >90%. Efficiency scale factors are extracted which are used to correct the simulation of the muon behaviour at this part of the detector, in order to match data observations.

Dredge, Brendon Neville. "An assessment of the invasion state and fisheries suitability in four dams and a natural lake in the Western Cape, South Africa." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/69114.

Abstract:
Despite more than a century of introductions, fish invasions are poorly understood in South Africa. This thesis aims to: (1) provide baseline information on the fish fauna in five inland water bodies (four dams: Theewaterskloof, Clanwilliam, Quaggaskloof, and Voelvlei and a natural lake, Groenvlei) in the Western Cape; (2) determine which species were established and provide a baseline of abundance and size structure for monitoring and, (3) make preliminary recommendations for a fishery. First, criteria for determining establishment were developed by undertaking a full biological assessment of bluegill Lepomis macrochirus, a data-poor species in South Africa. This included the assessment of growth rate using validated estimates of age derived from otoliths in two dams (Clanwilliam Dam: Lt=335.9(1−eo.113(t+1.06)); Groenvlei: Lt=287.2(1-e−0.171(t+0.54)). Length at 50% maturity was similar for males (146 mmFL) and females (147 mmFL). Length frequency analysis combined with data on the age and growth and reproduction demonstrated that established populations of bluegill contained several age cohorts as well as mature and juvenile fishes. A meta-analysis was conducted to: (1) compile a list of initial stocking dates for all alien fishes in each waterbody and (2) use angler tournament data to assess for additional species and persistence over time. Data from the meta-analysis was combined with ichthyological survey data to determine establishment success. These data demonstrated that nine non-native species had established in the five water bodies. Clanwilliam Dam had the largest number (7) of non-native species established, Groenvlei (5) and Theewaterskloof, Brandvlei and Voelvlei the lowest with four species. The state of invasion of each species in the province showed that all nine species are categorised as invasive. This information on establishment was then integrated into a framework for rapidly determining what type of fishery would be most suitable for the 5 waterbodies. Potential yield was estimated using morphoedaphic models, were 260 t/yr for Theewaterskloof Dam, 93 t/yr for Voelvlei, 81 t/yr for Brandvlei, 59 t/yr for Groenvlei and 55 t/yr for Groenvlei. The CPUE for Groenvlei was the highest in gill nets with 1.32 ± 1.94 kg/h, then Voelvlei 1.05 ± 1.34 kg/h followed by Brandvlei (0.84 ± 1.48 kg/h), Clanwilliam (0.71 ± 1.55 kg/h) and lastly Theewaterskloof (0.36 ± 0.41 kg/h). Only Theewaterskloof could produce in excess of 100 t/yr but less than 400 t/yr of fish making it suitable for a small scale fishery. The CPUE values of Theewaterskloof were the lowest and a gill net fishery on this water body may not produce sufficient fish for the fishery. All water bodies had a high recreational angling usage, the opening of a small scale fishery could be detrimental to this industry. Subsistence and recreational anglers should be promoted with the possibility of a long line industry targeting Clarias gariepinus.

Tupmongkol, Thana. "An empirical study of the factors of the activity-based costing (ABC) implementation in Thailand : four case studies in Thai state enterprises (TSEs)." Thesis, Northumbria University, 2008. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/811/.

Full text
Abstract:
During the past two decades the activity-based costing (ABC) system has received a great deal of attention as a cost management innovation that may provide more accurate product costs than conventional cost allocation methods (Johnson 1987, Kaplan 1988, Cooper 1988a). Moreover, Favere-Marchesi (2001) stated that the ABC system is one of many such tools that have the potential to help Thai companies regain their competitive edge in an ever- growing world of contenders. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the implementation process of ABC systems in Thai organisations, particularly Thai State Enterprises (TSEs), in order to identify the factors influencing this implementation so as to make suggestions for its improvement. As part of this a theoretical framework for ABC implementation in Thai State Enterprises is developed. This study has two objectives: the first is to obtain a picture of cost accounting systems, both traditional costing systems and ABC systems in Thai organisations, as the preliminary of this study. The second objective is to trace the ABC implementation in selected Thai State Enterprises where ABC systems have been implemented. This will examine the development of the ABC implementation in four Thai State Enterprises, namely, Thai Plywood Company Limited (TPC), Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and TOT Corporation (Public) Company Limited (TOT). The results from this study, after in-depth investigation, reveal a large number of sub-factors influencing implementations; however, these sub-factors were compiled as nine main factors including, (1) Top management support, (2) Computer systems, (3) Education and training, (4) ABC team, (5) Objectives of ABC implementation, (6) ABC implementation process, (7) Benefits of ABC implementation, (8) Problems with ABC implementation, and (9) Level of progress of ABC implementation. Finally, this study develops a theoretical framework for ABC implementation and is the first to empirically apply an implementation stage model to Thai State Enterprises.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports a study of Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), exploiting the decay channel into a pair of Z bosons that in turn decay into pairs of electrons or muons (H->ZZ->4l, l = e,mu). This work is carried out in the context of the beginning of Run II of the LHC, a new data-taking period that started in 2015, following a two-year-long shutdown. This restart is marked by an increase of the centre-of-mass energy from 8 TeV to 13 TeV, and a narrowing of the spacing of proton bunches from 50 ns to 25 ns. These new parameters both increase the luminosity and set new constraints on the triggering, reconstruction and analysis of pp collision events. Therefore, considerable effort is devoted to the improvement and reoptimization of the CMS trigger system for Run II, focusing on the reconstruction and selection of electrons and on the preparation of multilepton trigger paths that preserve a maximal efficiency for the H->ZZ->4l channel.Secondly, the offline algorithms for electron and muon selection are optimized and their efficiencies are measured in data, while the selection logic of four-lepton candidates is improved. In order to extract rare production modes of the Higgs boson such as vector boson fusion, VH associated production and ttH associated production, a new classification of selected events into exclusive categories is introduced, using discriminants based on matrix-element calculations and jet flavour tagging. Results of the analysis of first 13 TeV data are presented for two data sets recorded in 2015 and early 2016, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.8 fb-1 and 12.9 fb-1, respectively. A standalone rediscovery of the Higgs boson in the four-lepton channel is achieved at the new energy. The signal strength relative to the standard model prediction, the mass and decay width of the boson, and a set of parameters describing the contributions of its main predicted production modes are measured. All results are in good agreement with standard model expectations for a 125 GeV Higgs boson within the incertainties, which are dominated by their statistical component with the current data set. Finally, a search for an additional high-mass resonance decaying to four leptons is performed, and no significant excess is observed

Abstract:
This thesis document reports measurements of the mass and width of the new boson re- cently discovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), candidating to be the Standard Model Higgs boson. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the LHC, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 5. 1 fb−1 at 7 TeV center of mass energy and 19. 7 fb−1 at 8 TeV center of mass energy. Set of events selecting Higgs boson via the H → Z Z decay channel, where both Z bosons decay to electron or muon lepton pairs, is used for the Higgs boson properties measurements. A precise measurement of its mass has been performed and gives 125. 6 ± 0. 4(stat) ± 0. 2 (syst) GeV. Constraints on the Higgs boson width were established using its off-shell production and decay to a pair of Z bosons, where one Z boson decays to an electron or muon pair, and the other to an electron, muon, or neutrino pair. The obtained result is an upper limit on the Higgs boson width of 22 MeV at a 95% confidence level, which is 5. 4 times the expected value in the standard model at the measured mass. Throughout the thesis, a particular attention has been put on the elec- tron momentum estimation. The combination of the momentum estimate with the tracker and the energy measurement with the electromagnetic calorimeter, allowing a significant improvement of the low transverse impulsion electrons measurement of the momentum, has been revisited and played an essential role in the Higgs boson discovery in the 4 leptons decay channel. The electron energy scale and resolution have been measured with very high precision using the Z boson decaying in electrons

Abstract:
Forty-seven of the fifty states had some form of state-level board for higher education in 1981. Critics have expressed concern that the level of those boards' involvement in institutional affairs has steadily increased, while others have observed that administrative costs at the institutional level have gradually risen. It is not known if there is a relationship between the cost of operation of state-level boards and their level of involvement in the affairs of the institutions under their purview; nor, is it known if there is a relationship between the cost of operation of state-level boards and the cost of administration at the institutional level. The purpose of this study was to investigate these relationships. The population for the study consisted of twenty state-level boards for higher education, eleven governing boards and nine coordinating boards. The population further consisted of 216 public, four-year bachelor degree and higher degree granting institutions located in twenty-three states, including Delaware, Vermont, and Wyoming which had no state-level board for higher education in 1980-1981. Seven variables were hypothesized as factors either influencing the cost of administration in public, four-year institutions, the cost of operation of state-level boards for higher education, or the relationship between the two. These variables were formulated with data obtained from a survey of State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO) member agencies and from Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) financial and enrollment tapes. Pearson product-moment correlation and one-way analysis of variance were used to test for significance of relationships between pairs of variables. An analysis of each of the research questions was presented in textural and tabular form.
Ed. D.

The study was comprised of 40 heifers - 10 of each breed, namely Afrikaner, Braford, Charolais and Drakensberger. A subjective system of coat scoring, ranging from extremely short to very woolly, was used. Body condition score was measured subjectively, with 1 being emaciated and 9 being obese. Hide-thickness (in mm) and tick count were also determined. Between August 2007 and early March 2008, measurements were carried out on the same 10 animals of each breed, with highly significant differences in body condition score, hide-thickness and tick count being observed between the breeds in all instances. Coat scores differed significantly between breeds in the earlier and latter stages of the study becoming less significant midway through. A significant difference in body condition score within breeds was also found, while hide-thickness did not differ significantly within breeds.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the governance of so-called regional innovation systems. It studies regional and sub-regional dynamics in building institutional environments conducive to innovation. The research employs a qualitative research methodology that comprises semi-structured interviews with 47 policy-makers, practitioners and academics in four case studies of city-regions within the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia: Aachen, Dortmund, Duisburg and Düsseldorf. It identifies factors influencing the systemic-ness of business and innovation support, particularly within the triple helix of university-industry-government relations. It argues that important sub-regional governance dynamics are neglected by many contemporary regional conceptualisations and proposes considering local innovation systems as an alternative. Hence, it scrutinises the appropriateness of the current academic conceptualisations and, in particular, criticises their value in terms of operational guidance. The thesis argues that certain regional innovation policies and governance dynamics fail to constitute a regional innovation system and calls for organisational innovation in the framework structure to revive or maintain inter-institutional dynamics and cooperative relationships towards achieving a coherent, holistic and strategic policy approach. This thesis aims to contribute to the understanding of how to make a regional innovation system work and what important aspects are to be considered for implementing innovation policy – including cluster policy – successfully.

Abstract:

A search for Higgs boson pair production in the four b-jet final state is carried out with up to 36.1/fb of LHC proton--proton collision data collected at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. Three benchmark signals are studied: a spin-2 graviton decaying into a Higgs boson pair, a scalar resonance decaying into a Higgs boson pair, and Standard Model non-resonant Higgs boson pair production. This thesis presents a search in events with four individually resolved b-tagged jets. Higgs bosons produced with large momenta are reconstructed as single large radius jets with substructure. The analysis of this topology is presented in CERN-THESIS-2018-118. The two analyses are statistically combined and upper limits on the production cross section of Higgs boson pairs times branching ratio to four b-quarks are set in each model. The combined result searches for resonance masses in the range 260–3000 GeV. No significant excess is observed; the largest deviation of data over prediction is found at a mass of 280 GeV, corresponding to 2.3 standard deviations globally. The observed 95% confidence level upper limit on the non-resonant production is 13 times the Standard Model prediction.

Abstract:
Mutations of scales of power, as well as the role of immigration in the physical and symbolic production of the city, are analysed through immigrant integration policies in the cities of Acre, Arad, Kiryat Gat and Kiryat Shmona in Israel. Jewish immigration policies, as defined by the State of Israel from 1950s onwards, are challenged by decentralisation. However, only some local governments actively make local immigrant integration policies. The inquiry shows that these mid-sized cities proactively formulate a local policy in order to “choose” the immigrants that settle on the one hand; and to access new channels of public resources on the other hand.In that context, the implementation of an immigrant policy in the city leads to interdependence between actors located at various scales of power. With the fragmentation of responsibilities, actors compete to obtain the public and private resources for immigrant integration. Immigration is part of the making of place. Through the reintegration of former waves of immigration, and the imagined potential of future immigrants, immigration is foreseen as a demographic, economic or cultural renewal. It is a lever to redefine the development scales of those frontier towns. Keywords: Scales, governance, local governments, places, mid-sized cities, biographical method, immigration, integration policies, Israel

Abstract:
Nanomagnetic logic, incorporating logic bits in the magnetization orientations of single-domain nanomagnets, has garnered attention as an alternative to transistor-based logic due to its non-volatility and unprecedented energy-efficiency. The energy efficiency of this scheme is determined by the method used to flip the magnetization orientations of the nanomagnets in response to one or more inputs and produce the desired output. Unfortunately, the large dissipative losses that occur when nanomagnets are switched with a magnetic field or spin-transfer-torque inhibit the promised energy-efficiency. Another technique offering superior energy efficiency, “straintronics”, involves the application of a voltage to a piezoelectric layer to generate a strain which is transferred to an elastically coupled magnetrostrictive layer, causing magnetization rotation. The functionality of this scheme can be enhanced further by introducing magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the magnetostrictive layer, thereby generating four stable magnetization states (instead of the two stable directions produced by shape anisotropy in ellipsoidal nanomagnets). Numerical simulations were performed to implement a low-power universal logic gate (NOR) using such 4-state magnetostrictive/piezoelectric nanomagnets (Ni/PZT) by clocking the piezoelectric layer with a small electrostatic potential (~0.2 V) to switch the magnetization of the magnetic layer. Unidirectional and reliable logic propagation in this system was also demonstrated theoretically. Besides doubling the logic density (4-state versus 2-state) for logic applications, these four-state nanomagnets can be exploited for higher order applications such as image reconstruction and recognition in the presence of noise, associative memory and neuromorphic computing. Experimental work in strain-based switching has been limited to magnets that are multi-domain or magnets where strain moves domain walls. In this work, we also demonstrate strain-based switching in 2-state single-domain ellipsoidal magnetostrictive nanomagnets of lateral dimensions ~200 nm fabricated on a piezoelectric substrate (PMN-PT) and studied using Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM). A nanomagnetic Boolean NOT gate and unidirectional bit information propagation through a finite chain of dipole-coupled nanomagnets are also shown through strain-based "clocking". This is the first experimental demonstration of strain-based switching in nanomagnets and clocking of nanomagnetic logic (Boolean NOT gate), as well as logic propagation in an array of nanomagnets.
