Gonzalez, Melissa Joy. "Media Propaganda: A Framing Analysis of Radio Broadcasts from U.S. to Cuba." Scholar Commons, 2013. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4494.

Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative study is to analyze the dominant propaganda strategies that were reflected in an hour-long program of Radio Martì, a broadcast produced on behalf of Voice of America in the United States and aired to Cuba. Through propaganda techniques, a content analysis was used to determine which strategies were present in the commentator's coverage of the program, El Dia de la Prensa Libre on May 3rd, 2012. This study uncovered propaganda strategies, including testimonials, flag-waving, glittering generalities, appeal to prejudice, image manipulation, over-simplicity, assertion, and third party technique, that were utilized in an effort to present nuanced perspectives on the broadcasts transmitted on Radio Martì. The use of these strategies demonstrates that the program continues to use propaganda when broadcasting to Cuba after the conflict of interest incident with the United States and Radio Martì in 2006. Beyond the analysis of this broadcast, the results of this study cannot be generalized, but they can be viewed as an exemplar of the broadcast's stance on propaganda messages to Cuba on behalf of American journalists.

Abstract:
The construction of four-dimensional string models via nonabelian twist is discussed in an operator formalism. Features of Hilbert space related to nonabelian twists are studied from the group theoretical point of view. This enables global anomalies to be removed if one insists the vacuum states to be a representation of the nonabelian group. We present a systematic procedure for the identification of the final gauge group, whose rank is generically reduced in a nonabelian twist. This general method of model-building is applied to obtain all minimal-rank strings resulting from twists by finite nonabelian subgroups of SU(2). Their partition functions, vacuum representations, gauge groups, and the elimination of global anomalies are considered individually for each case.

Smith, John Warren. "Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in four-fermi theories." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30345.

Full text
Abstract:
Dynamical symmetry breaking of discrete chiral symmetry in four-fermi models is studied. A variational method is used to determine the effective potential. This potential is then examined to determine the critical coupling for which a phase transistion between massless and massive states occurs. Two trial ground states are used in the variational calculation and the results are the same in each case. The first is the ground state of a free massive fermion and the other is a generalized Bogoliobov-Valatin transformation of a free massless fermion ground state. In each case dynamical symmetry breaking occurs, if the coupling is fine-tuned. The results are shown to be valid for physical dimensions 1+1, 2+1 and 3+1 and compared with those of other variational methods and the 1/N expansion.

Models with extra dimensions have attracted much interest recently. The reason is that string theory, a serious candidate for the theory of unification of all interactions, predicts the existence of up to seven extra dimensions. These models have many attractive features and may turn out to provide the solution for many long standing problems in physics. One interesting and very attractive idea is that our visible universe is confined to a four-dimensional hypersurface in a higher-dimensional spacetime. This membrane like universe was dubbed brane-world.

Abstract:
We study scattering amplitudes in quantum chromodynamics (QCD), N = 4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory and the six-dimensional N = (1, 1) SYM theory, focusing on the symmetries of and relations between the tree-level scattering amplitudes in these three gauge theories. We derive the tree level and one-loop color decomposition of an arbitrary QCD amplitude into primitive amplitudes. Furthermore, we derive identities spanning the null space among the primitive amplitudes. We prove that every color ordered tree amplitude of massless QCD can be obtained from gluon-gluino amplitudes of N = 4 SYM theory. Furthermore, we derive analytical formulae for all gluon-gluino amplitudes relevant for QCD. We compare the numerical efficiency and accuracy of evaluating these closed analytic formulae for color ordered QCD tree amplitudes to a numerically efficient implementation of the Berends-Giele recursion. We derive the symmetries of massive tree amplitudes on the coulomb branch of N = 4 SYM theory, which in turn can be obtained from N = (1, 1) SYM theory by dimensional reduction. Furthermore, we investigate the tree amplitudes of N = (1, 1) SYM theory and explain how analytical formulae can be obtained from a numerical implementation of the supersymmetric BCFW recursion relation and investigate a potential uplift of the massless tree amplitudes of N = 4 SYM theory. Finally we study an alternative to dimensional regularization of N = 4 SYM theory. The infrared divergences are regulated by masses obtained from a Higgs mechanism. The corresponding string theory set-up suggests that the amplitudes have an exact dual conformal symmetry. We confirm this expectation and illustrate the calculational advantages of the massive regulator by explicit calculations.

Ehrhardt, Mathieu. "Indices for supersymmetric quantum field theories in four dimensions." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2012. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/274322.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, we investigate four dimensional supersymmetric indices. The motivation for studying such objects lies in the physics of Seiberg's electric-magnetic duality in supersymmetric field theories. In the first chapter, we first define the index and underline its cohomological nature, before giving a first computation based on representation theory of free superconformal field theories. After listing all representations of the superconformal algebra based on shortening conditions, we compute the associated Verma module characters, from which we can extract the index in the appropriate limit. This approach only provides us with the free field theory limit for the index and does not account for the values of the $R$-charges away from free field theories. To circumvent this limitation, we then study a theory on $\mathbb{R}\times S^3$ which allows for a computation of the superconformal index for multiplets with non-canonical $R$-charges. We expand the fields in harmonics and canonically quantise the theory to analyse the set of quantum states, identifying the ones that contribute to the index. To go beyond free field theory on $\mathbb{R}\times S^3$, we then use the localisation principle to compute the index exactly in an interacting theory, regardless of the value of the coupling constant. We then show that the index is independent of a particular geometric deformation of the underlying manifold, by squashing the sphere. In the final chapter, we show how the matching of the index can be used in the large $N$ limit to identify the $R$-charges for all fields of the electric-magnetic theories of the canonical Seiberg duality. We then conclude by outlining potential further work.

King, Dennis J. 1945. "A Structural Approach to Four Theories of Group Development." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1997. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc279224/.

Abstract:
The goal of this study was to attempt to develop a classification scheme that systematically related individual behavior, interpersonal behavior, and group interactions for the purpose of using the resulting classification scheme to evaluate theories of group development proposed by Bion, Bennis and Shepard, Bales, and Tuckman and Jensen. It was assumed that theorists' presuppositions about the structure of groups might influence their theories. Using a qualitative process of analysis, a structural classification scheme (SCS) was developed based upon transformative and generative rules, utilizing the General System Theory subsystem process of self-regulated boundary operations. The SCS protocol was employed to categorize and compare the theories of group development proposed by Bion, Bennis and Shepard, Bales, and Tuckman and Jensen. The resulting categorization of theories indicated that relationships existed among and between a group's structural properties, the complexity and type of communication connections among and between group members, and the size of the group. In addition, a common structural relationship was demonstrated to exist among and between individual, dyadic, and triadic group forms. A similar structural relationship was also speculated to exist between groups of any size. It was concluded that a structural approach to groups may offer insight to group leaders and members in recognizing and creating alternative frameworks that best fit a group's structure to its task. This approach may have broad implications in that it suggests that group goals might best be considered before the structure of the group is determined. In addition, a structural approach was also speculated to be an emotionally neutral alternative method of discussing individual and group behavior.

Abstract:
This dissertation tests and evaluates four current theories of the verse structure of biblical Hebrew poetry. These theories are: the counting of minimal units, such as poetic feet, stresses or syllables, practiced in various forms since antiquity, and recently employed by D. N. Freedman, F. M. Cross and others, the analysis of poetic line-forms proposed by Terence Collins, the syntactic structural analysis proposed by M. O'Connor, and the semantic analysis practiced by Willow van der Meer, Johannes de Moor and a group of scholars associated with the Kampen School of Theology. All of these theories purport to identify and explain the fundamentals of biblical Hebrew verse structure. Each of these theories is presented comprehensively. These presentations include a review of literature relevant to the field of Hebrew verse structure studies in general, and to these four current theories of verse structure in particular.
These four theories are applied to four poetic passages from the Hebrew Bible: Judges 5:2--31, Isaiah 5:1--7, Lamentations 1 and Psalm 126. These applications show how each of these theories describes the verse structure of each of the poems. Following this, the theories and their applications to these passages are compared to determine which, if any, of these theories are effective in distinguishing poetry from prose, distinguishing one poem from another, predicting the form of a poem, and prescribing rules for the composition of poetry. The strengths and weaknesses of each theory are identified. In addition, the reasons for the failure of these theories to provide an adequate description of the verse structure of biblical Hebrew poetry are indicated.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on form factors in superconformal theories, in particular maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills (MSYM) and ABJM. Scattering amplitudes in these theories have a wealth of special properties and significant amount of insight has been developed for these along with the modern techniques to calculate them. In this thesis, it is presented that form factors have very similar properties to scattering amplitudes and the techniques for scattering amplitudes can be successfully applied to form factors. After a review of the methods employed, the results for tree-level and multi-loop form factors of protected operators are derived. In four dimensions, it is shown that the tree-level form factors can be computed using MHV diagrams BCFWrelations by augmenting the set of vertices with elementary form factors. Tree and loop-level MHV and non-MHV form factors of protected operators in the stress-tensor multiplet of MSYM are computed as examples. A solution to the BCFW recursion relations for form factors is derived in terms of a diagrammatic representation. Supersymmetric multiplets of form factors of protected operators are constructed. In three dimensions, Sudakov form factor of a protected biscalar operator is computed in ABJM theory. This form factor captures the IR divergences of the scattering amplitudes. It is found that this form factor can be written in terms of a single, non-planar Feynman integral which is maximally transcendental. Additionally, the sub-leading colour corrections to the one-loop four-particle amplitude in ABJM is derived using unitarity cuts. Finally a basis of two-loo pure master integrals for the Sudakov form factor topology is constructed from a principle that relies on certain unitarity cuts.

Abstract:
Supersymmetry is an important concept in modern high energy physics. It has found many applications in theoretical considerations of supersymmetric gauge theories as well as in phenomenological approaches to physics beyond the Standard Model. In this report we discuss some recent progress in supersymmetric eld theories in four and six dimensions. After introducing basic ideas and properties of supersymmetry we review the concept of scattering amplitudes in maximally supersymmetric theories in four dimensions before constructing a related framework in six dimensions. Here, the spinor helicity formalism and on-shell superspace were recently developed for six-dimensional gauge theories with (1,1) supersymmetry. We combine these two techniques with (generalised) unitarity, which is a powerful technique to calculate scattering amplitudes in any massless theory. As an application we calculate one-loop superamplitudes with four and ve external particles in the (1,1) theory and perform several consistency checks on our results. Within the area of phenomenological applications of supersymmetric gauge theories, we brie y review basic properties of supersymmetry breaking and gauge mediation in four dimensions. An important recent development has been the concept of theories with broken supersymmetry and metastable vacua. By using the advances of Seiberg duality, we examine a metastable N = 1 Macroscopic SO(N) SQCD model of Intriligator, Seiberg and Shih (ISS). We introduce various baryon and meson deformations, including multitrace operators. In this setup, direct fundamental messengers and the symmetric pseudomodulus messenger mediate supersymmetry breaking to a minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. We compute gaugino and sfermion masses and compare them for each deformation type. We also explore reducing the rank of the magnetic

Kristjanson, Linda Joan. "Family satisfaction with palliative care: A test of four alternative theories." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185545.

Full text
Abstract:
The experience of dealing with end-stage cancer in a family member has been reported to be stressful. One source of stress experienced by family members may be dissatisfaction with care received by the patient and themselves. For health professionals to provide care that promotes family satisfaction, it is essential to measure this phenomenon and understand the elements that contribute to satisfaction. An examination of the literature revealed four competing explanatory theories of satisfaction, none of which has solid empirical support. Moreover, these theories had not been tested with families or those experiencing cancer care in particular. Therefore, the aim of this research was to test these alternative theories using theoretical and empirical modeling with the expectation that a useful model would be identified to guide clinical practice of families in terminal care situations. The theories tested were: (1) Vroom's Fulfillment Theory, (2) Porter's Discrepancy Theory, (3) Thibaut and Kelley's Social Comparison Theory, and (4) Ajzen and Fishbein's Expectancy Value Theory. A correlational design with a causal modeling methodology was used. One hundred and nine family members of patients with advanced cancer were obtained from three different palliative care services. Five instruments were used to collect data: (1) FAMCARE Scale, (2) F-Care Needs Scale, (3) F-Care Expectations Scale, (4) F-Care Perceptions Scale, and (5) a short demographic questionnaire. Data analysis included use of descriptive statistics to summarize the sample in terms of demographic variables, reliability and validity testing of the instruments, and theoretical and empirical model testing using multiple regression techniques and residual analysis. Of the four theories tested, Discrepancy theory was the most credible, accounting for 68 percent of explained variance in family care satisfaction. Empirical modeling resulted in identification of the Family Care Satisfaction Model, which explained 78 percent of the variance in care satisfaction. Implications for theory construction and clinical practice are presented and recommendations for further research offered. The family constitutes perhaps the most important social context within which health and illness occur. As more families are required to care for dependent or ill members at home, understanding the needs, expectations, and satisfactions with care experienced by families will become increasingly important.

Abstract:
The thesis makes use of the framework of action and life to consider four philosophical theories of mind, enunciated in the writings of Rene Descartes, David Hume, William James, and Thomas Nagel. Showing how each theory makes an appeal to action or life in order to attempt to provide a characterization of mind that is not too restrictive nor too lax is the concern of the extensive historical portion of the thesis. It is on the basis of the success or failure of these appeals to the mind's living experience of its own activity that the four theories are evaluated. By way of conclusion, the reprecussions of these successes and failures for the contemporary activity of philosophizing about mind are briefly examined.

Abstract:
Perturbative quantum field theory is our most developed framework to accurately analyse many physical phenomena. The standard tool is Feynman diagrams, but at one-loop the heat kernel is also a powerful technique. It is however difficult to go beyond perturbation theory, and symmetry is a key factor. In particular, conformal symmetry strongly restricts the correlators, and have been combined with the average null energy condition (ANEC) to derive the Hofman-Maldacena bounds on the anomaly coefficients in four dimensions. In this thesis we study different problems in perturbative quantum field theory. First, we study the Weyl anomaly for a non-conformal free scalar in a four-dimensional curved spacetime. We diagrammatically understand the definition of the anomaly without classical symmetry, and we precisely interpret the well-known heat kernel calculation. Then, we study higher-derivative gauge theories in six dimensions. These theories are the natural candidate to perturbatively construct non-unitary conformal theories. The calculation is done with the heat kernel method and we derive the general expression of the relevant coefficient, which was previously unknown. Supersymmetry or the addition of a Yang-Mills term are also considered. Finally, we initiate the study of the consequence of the ANEC on non-conformal field theories with the example of the self-interacting scalar in four dimensions. The energy flux of a state with a single field insertion is computed. Starting from the perturbative momentum-space Euclidean correlators, we construct the relevant Wightman function to evaluate the energy flux. The calculation is considerably complicated, but we recover the expected result, opening the possibility of studying more interesting states.

Abstract:
This is the first study of its kind about newsroom convergence and multi-skilled journalists in Saudi newspaper organisations and aimed to fill a gap in the literature about this particular issue in the Saudi context. The study investigated transformations, implications and consequences of technological convergence at four Saudi traditional newspaper organisations; Al-Madina, Alriyadh, Alyaum, and Alwatan. This thesis has explored the particular impacts of online journalistic production in traditional newspaper organisations to identify changes and perhaps challenges occurring in newspaper newsrooms. The study used the observation method in the four newsrooms and in-depth interviews with open ended questions with 60 professionals. The findings confirmed that there are ongoing transformations in the newsrooms. Yet, these transformations are challenged by regulatory, business, and cultural forces. Alyaum was the only newsroom to introduce new integrated newsroom. Journalists are observing and using new communication technologies in the workplace. However, there are difficulties in this process such as tensions in the newsrooms and shortage of qualified and trained journalists in the Saudi media market especially, multiskilled journalists. Despite embracing online and digital technology in news production and disruption, the four Saudi newspapers are still prioritising the traditional print side as it is generating more than 95 % of the annual revenue. Yet, the full integration of newsrooms between online and print newsrooms does not exist in Saudi press organisations.

The purpose of this paper is to examine how the British press shapes the image of Lithuania. To achieve the result certain questions were raised: how often is Lithuania mentioned in the selected newspapers; what are the major topics/coverage that mention Lithuania; what is the role of Lithuania in those topics; what attitude is being formed towards Lithuania in those topics; what means are used in the image formation. Two major British newspapers The Times and The Guardian were taken for the analysis of the articles. For the research all articles between the period of the 1st January to the 31st December 2008 were used. The methods of content analysis were mostly applied though the comparison of different newspapers was also selected. The paper is divided into two main parts. The first part is used to present the general views on the media, theoretical approach, main research on national image that is formed by the media. The second part reveals the means of how and the reasons why certain sources for the reaseach were selected: the selection of the media, newspapers, articles and periods; defining the variables and formation of the code (coding schemata); gathering of information; data analysis; concluding remarks. The conclusion that was arrived is as follows. Both newspapers presented Lithuania in slightly different ways. The Times had less articles about Lithuania and the country was presented in a quite narrow context (home news) as one of the East European countries... [to full text]

Abstract:
Deformations of the original F-theory background are proposed. These lead to multiple new dualities and physical phenomena. We concentrate on one model where we let seven-branes wrap a multi-centered Taub-NUT space instead of R4. This configuration provides a successful F-theory embedding of a class of recently proposed four-dimensional N = 2 superconformal (SCFT) à la Gaiotto. Aspects of Argyres- Seiberg duality, of the new Gaiotto duality, as well as of the branes network of Benini- Benvenuti and Tachikawa are captured by our construction. The supergravity theory for the conformal case is also briefly discussed. Extending our construction to the non-conformal case, we find interesting cascading behavior in four-dimensional gauge theories with N = 2 supersymmetry. Since the analysis of this unexpected phenomenon is quite difficult in the language of type IIB/F-theory, we turn to the type IIA/M-theory description where the origin of the N = 2 cascade is clarified. Using the T-dual type IIA brane language, we first start by studying the N = 1 supersymmetric cascading gauge theory found in type IIB string theory on p regular and M fractional D3-branes at the tip of the conifold. We reproduce the supersymmetric vacuum struc- ture of this theory. We also show that the IIA analog of the non-supersymmetric state found by Kachru, Pearson and Verlinde in the IIB description is metastable in string theory, but the barrier for tunneling to the supersymmetric vacuum goes to infinity in the field theory limit. We then use the techniques we have developed to analyze the N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theory corresponding to regular and fractional D3-branes on a near-singular K3, and clarify the origin of the cascade in this theory.

Abstract:
This thesis contains an introductory chapter on orbifolds. Besides rudimentary basics we discuss more advanced topics like discrete torsion and asymmetric orbifold groups. As examples we investigate torus compactifications and an asymmetric T^4/Z(3)^L x Z(3)^R orbifold. The following chapter explains the foundations of orientifolds, including open strings with Chan-Paton degrees of freedom. Chapters 4-7 present own research. In chapter 4 we quantize open strings with linear boundary conditions, as they show up in electro-magnetic fields. We quantize the zero- and momentum-modes for toroidal compactifications, too. As an application we calculate the commutator of the coordinate fields in the case of general constant Neveu-Schwarz U(1)-field strengths. Thereby we confirm previous results on non-commutativity of open string theories in Neveu-Schwarz backgrounds. Chapter 5 reviews the results of a former publication [1] on asymmetric orientifolds, supplemented by some recent insights in connection with the preceeding chapter. Chapter 6 is a summary of [2]. In this publication we investigated to what extend one can build phenomenologically interesting models from toroidal orientifolds. By turning on magnetic fluxes on D9-branes we induce chiral fermions. Most calculations are performed in an (equivalent) T-dual picture. Here the number of chiral fermions is given by the topological intersection number of D-branes. In orientifolds of toroidal compactifications one obtains either non-chiral or non-supersymmetric orientifold solutions. However both properties can be reconciled in orientifolds that are obtained from specific supersymmetric orbifold compactifications. In chapter 7 we present the "sigma Omega"-Orientifold on a T^6/Z(4) orbifold. As a very attractive example we investigate a supersymmetric U(4) x U(2)^3_L x U(2)^3_R model that is broken to an MSSM-like model by switching on suitable background fields in the low energy effective action. This chapter is based on our publication [3]. The thesis is supplemented by an appendix with formulas applied in the text, as well as proofs to two theorems that were used as well.

BRADEN, CARRIE JO GIFFORD. "SELF-HELP AS A LEARNED RESPONSE TO CHRONIC ILLNESS EXPERIENCE: A TEST OF FOUR ALTERNATIVE THEORIES (ADAPTATION, HELPLESSNESS, RESOURCEFULNESS)." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/183879.

Full text
Abstract:
The purposes of this study were: (a) to identify which of four competing theories best accounted for self help as a learned outcome of chronic illness experience, and (b) to generate a Self Help Model that could be used to explicate self help as a learned response to chronic illness. The concepts of severity of chronic illness, intimate dependency reinforcers, self induced dependency reinforcers, cue outcome independence reinforcers, enabling skill, self help and life quality were specified in a causal format that allowed a competitive test of four different theories. The theories tested were instrumental passivity theory, self induced dependency theory, an adaptation of learned helplessness theory and learned resourcefulness theory. The study utilized a causal modeling design to assess a five stage model. A judgment sample of 786 individuals having a diagnosis of arthritis or an arthritis related condition were mailed questionnaires. Two hundred seventy-eight subjects responded, a 36 percent return rate. Seven scales using a visual analogue response format indexed the theoretical concepts. Reliability and validity estimates were conducted to assess psychometric properties of the instruments. Model parameters were estimated using multiple regression statistical techniques. Residual analysis was conducted to estimate violations of the causal model and statistical assumptions. Factors from one theory, the learned resourcefulness theory, emerged as more credible than factors from any single other theory. However, the data did evidence factors from other theories that were significant. Self induced sick role reinforcers and cue outcome independence reinforcers were found to slightly reduce perception of enabling skill (B = -.31 and B = -.12, respectively; R² = .11). Intimate dependency reinforcers and cue outcome independence reinforcers were found to slightly reduce perception of self help (B = -.34 and B = -.24, respectively; R² = .19). These factors helped to identify environmental and intra-person contingencies that led to reduction in self help. The learned resourcefulness factor, enabling skill, demonstrated the mediating skills that worked to enhance self help (B = .44; R² = .29). The Self Help Model generated to explicate self help as a learned response to chronic illness explained 50 percent of the variance in perceived self help. Self help had a direct positive impact on life quality (B = .61; R² = .46). By knowing the factors influencing a patient’s self help response to chronic illness experience, the nurse is better able to plan more effective self help promoting interventions for individuals, or groups of patients. Nurses who promote a self help response in those having a chronic illness could improve their life quality.

Abstract:
Over the last 5 decades, the retrospective pretest has been used in behavioral science research to battle key threats to the internal validity of posttest-only control-group and pretest-posttest only designs. The purpose of this study was to compare outcome measures resulting from four research design implementations incorporating the retrospective pretest: (a) pre-post-then, (b) pre-post/then, (c) post-then, and (d) post/then. The study analyzed the interaction effect of pretest sensitization and post-intervention survey order on two subjective measures: (a) a control measure not related to the intervention and (b) an experimental measure consistent with the intervention. Validity of subjective measurement outcomes were assessed by correlating resulting to objective performance measurement outcomes. A Situational Leadership® II (SLII) training workshop served as the intervention. The Work Involvement Scale of the self version of the Survey of Management Practices Survey served as the subjective control measure. The Clarification of Goals and Objectives Scale of the self version of the Survey of Management Practices Survey served as the subjective experimental measure. The Effectiveness Scale of the self version of the Leader Behavior Analysis II® served as the objective performance measure. This study detected differences in measurement outcomes from SLII participant responses to an experimental and a control measure. In the case of the experimental measure, differences were found in the magnitude and direction of the validity coefficients. In the case of the control measure, differences were found in the magnitude of the treatment effect between groups. These differences indicate that, for this study, the pre-post-then design produced the most valid results for the experimental measure. For the control measure in this study, the pre-post/then design produced the most valid results. Across both measures, the post/then design produced the least valid results.

Keizer, Arjan B. "The changing logic of Japanese employment practices: A firm-level analysis of four industries." Thesis, Erasmus University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/3727.

Abstract:
Yes
In previous decades, the perception of Japan¿s employment practices has been strongly intertwined with its economic fortunes. From the 1970s, Japan¿s employment practices came to be seen as one of the cornerstones of its economic success. However, this perception changed, albeit with a substantial delay, when the economy proved incapable of returning to its former path of growth after the `bubble¿ burst at the end of the 1980s. Like so many of its economic institutions, the employment practices became the subject of substantial criticism in a debate on the revitalisation of Japan¿s economy. This study takes its position within this debate by discussing the likelihood, character, and economic consequences of change. Environmental changes, like the ageing of the population and the substantial decrease in economic growth, require Japanese firms to adapt their human resource management. However, the embeddedness of national practices limits the scope of firms to make these adjustments; and change is determined by the dialectics between their strategies and existing practices. The firm, as an institution, thus experiences the impact of both the embedded employment practices and the economic impact of environmental changes. Accordingly, it is at the centre of this study. Theories of the firm are used to discuss the contribution of employment practices on efficiency, capabilities, and competitive strength. Case-studies from four different industries ¿ automobile, electronics, construction, and retailing ¿ describe the adaptations made by individual firms. Subsequently, these findings constitute the basis for a discussion of industry-specific employment practices and provide an answer to whether developments such as the rise in performance-based pay and labour mobility have altered the logic of Japanese employment practices.

Abstract:
The intent of this thesis is to discuss the manner in which four black newspapers covered the U.S. Masters Tournament, hosted annually at the Augusta National Golf Club, Georgia, from 1994 through 2001. The four black newspapers include two from the North, the New Pittsburgh Courier and the Chicago Defender, and two from the South, the Atlanta Voice and the Birmingham Times. It is my contention that U.S. Masters coverage in the aforementioned black papers is dependent upon the presence of Tiger Woods. Without Woods' participation at the Masters, coverage of the event would be diminished in the four black newspapers. The years 1994 through 2001 (excluding the Birmingham Times which was only microfilmed to 1999) have been analyzed in each of the four newspapers in order to present my case. The thesis proves that to the four black newspapers Tiger Woods is the deciding factor in its Masters coverage.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation aims at analyzing different representations of masculinities in Quatro Rodas magazine, comprehending 13 issues published in 2006 (numbers 548-560), including a special issue about the National Auto Show accompanying the October issue. As theoretical references, I have used contributions from Cultural Studies and Gender Studies, in approximation to a post-structuralist perspective. The images, advertisements and reports that have been chosen for research are those that, in some way, have more opportunely associated possible masculinities in topics and subjects evidenced for analysis. Gender identities and sexualities present in media have been aspects that allowed for those choices. Gender has been taken as a set of possible ways of being a man and a woman, i.e. different possibilities of living masculinities and femininities, which are contingent and changeable, showing a cultural and social character. Media has been considered as a cultural pedagogy that teaches cultural and social practices – in this analysis, gender practices. I have taken advantage of themes belonging to the daily automobile universe in order to think about construction of masculinities. Femininities have also been approached, considering that social relations between men and women are relational. The theme focuses have been distributed as follows: Cars – image and resemblance of their owners; Muscle cars – potency and power; Competition – a matter of cars and men; Favoring passions – a performance of romantic love; and From man to man – representations of masculinities. I have found that cars have been produced as objects belonging to a male world, something that has been constructed since childhood. It has been possible to realize that Quatro Rodas magazine points out heterosexuality as a naturalized practice, which is taken as “normal”. The topics evidenced in the issues analyzed take advantage of daily subjects and emphasize the regime of heteronormativity. Men’s social position has been related to the type of car they own, as well as to the knowledge they have about cars and the automobile world as a whole.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates whether institutional journalism should receive special treatment at the hands of the law. Special treatment encompasses the affording of benefits to and the imposition of liabilities on journalistic institutions and the individuals who work for them. The arguments against special treatment are pragmatic and theoretical: pragmatic arguments emphasise, inter alia, the difficulty of providing a definition of journalism, and theoretical arguments emphasise the difficulty in explaining why special treatment can be coherent. The former can be addressed by describing how special treatment is already afforded to institutional journalism, both liabilities and benefits, to individuals and institutions, and showing that some of the problems foreseen by the pragmatic arguments have not proved as difficult as they appear. The arguments that special treatment is incoherent can be addressed by arguing that the credibility and assessability of institutional journalism still provide a prima facie rationale for special treatment irrespective of the rise of public speech on the Internet, when combined with the integral nature of journalism to democracy. Two basic arguments are advanced why this is so. The first, the free speech values argument, is a consequentialist account that holds that special treatment is appropriate when (or because) institutional journalism contributes to free speech values. It is attractive, but presents difficulties, both when considered in the abstract and when applied to the free speech value of democracy. The second, a rights-based argument, based on the notion that freedoms of speech and of the Press are distinguishable, can be based on either on Dworkin’s theory of rights as trumps or Raz’s theory of rights as interests. Raz’s account is preferable, as it complements the free speech values thesis in explaining the coherence of special treatment.

The diploma thesis Media picture of building the Berlin wall - Rudé právo, The New York Times, The Times addresses the events associated with the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 and primarily presents the analysis of newspaper articles connected to the Berlin Wall topic. The issue of the Berlin Wall is portrayed before its construction, during the construction and immediately after it. In the "Teoretická východiska" chapter, the concepts used as a basis of the subsequent analysis of selected newspapers are explained. The first part of the thesis presents the historical and political circumstances of the Berlin Wall construction, especially the development of the Cold War between the representatives of East and West. The analysis of the three selected newspaper titles is preceded by a narrative interview with a foreign correspondent from Rudé právo. His statements serve as an illustration of the former Berlin atmosphere. In the analysis of the newspapers Rudé právo, The New York Times and The Times, emphasis is placed on the article contents, presentation style, theme diversity, trends and information value of the presented news. The output of the analysis is a comparison of all three selected titles and is based on the given theoretical grounds. This thesis is meant to serve as an example...

Abstract:
By formulating the six dimensional (0,2) superconformal field theory X[j] on a Riemann surface decorated with certain codimension two defects, a multitude of four dimensional N=2 supersymmetric field theories can be constructed. In this dissertation, various aspects of this construction are investigated in detail for j=A,D,E. This includes, in particular, an exposition of the various partial descriptions of the codimension two defects that become available under dimensional reductions and the relationships between them. Also investigated is a particular observable of this class of four dimensional theories, namely the partition function on the four sphere and its relationship to correlation functions in a class of two dimensional non-rational conformal field theories called Toda theories. It is pointed out that the scale factor that captures the Euler anomaly of the four dimensional theory has an interpretation in the two dimensional language, thereby adding one of the basic observables of the 4d theory to the 4d/2d dictionary.

Full text
Abstract:
New four dimensional N = 2 field theories can be engineered from compactifying six dimensional (2, 0) superconformal field theory on a punctured Riemann surface. Hitchin’s equation is defined on this Riemann surface and the fields in Hitchin’s equation are singular at the punctures. Four dimensional theory is entirely determined by the data at the punctures. Theory without lagrangian description can also be constructed in this way. We first construct new four dimensional generalized superconformal quiver gauge theory by putting regular singularity at the puncture. The algorithm of calculating weakly coupled gauge group in any duality frame is developed. The asymptotical free theory and Argyres-Douglas field theory can also be constructed using six dimensional method. This requires introducing irregular singularity of Hithcin’s equation. Compactify four dimensional theory down to three dimensions, the corresponding N = 4 theory has the interesting mirror symmetry. The mirror theory for the generalized superconformal quiver gauge theory can be derived using the data at the puncture too. Motivated by this construction, we study other three dimensional theories deformed from the above theory and find their mirrors. The surprising relation of above four dimensional gauge theory and two dimensional conformal field theory may have some deep implications. The S-duality of four dimensional theory and the crossing symmetry and modular invariance of two dimensional theory are naturally related.

The purpose of this work is to investigate the dynamic behaviors of a four-bar linkage press by considering the effect of the flexibility of the linkage and the clearance of joints. Besides, a method to find the optimal input speed was proposed. The results show that the impact force in the joints of a press with a variable speed generally is far larger than that of the press with constant speed, and the impact force of a flexible system is also far larger than that of a rigid system. Therefore, the flexibility and clearance of a real press should be considered in designing a press with a variable speed. However, if the input speed is properly designed, the impact force may be drastically reduced.

This paper is to apply the modern control theory to the design of controllers for the four-cylinder synchronizing system and the four-cylinder leveling system. The synchronization of the four-cylinder synchronizing system will not be guaranteed because of differences in seals friction, internal leakage, machining tolerances as well as load resistances of cylinders, so the adaptive control algorithm and the time delay control algorithm are adopted to design the synchronizing controllers in order to get a good synchronizing control performance. There exists a redundant control axis in the four-cylinder leveling system, and the uncertainties resulted from the load resistances of cylinders in addition to the positive zeros and the high gain dynamics associated with the inclinometers, thereupon control and -synthesis control algorithms are adopted separately to design the robust controllers in order to overcome the perturbation uncertainty and nonminimum phase problems. For the four-cylinder synchronizing system, the simulation and experimental results indicate that the model tracking error compensated adaptive control not only improve the synchronization precision, but also reduce the steady-state error. As the observer-based time-delay control, the experimental results show that the synchronizing system is insensitive to parameter variation in comparison to the model reference control system. For the four-cylinder leveling system, it can be found from the -plot analysis that the system with -synthesis control has better robust performance than that with the control. However, the leveling accuracy of the -synthesis control system is worse than that of the control system. the -synthesis controller can also be designed to promote the control accuracy of the leveling system by properly selecting the weighting function, but the system stability may suffer.

After the Macao government ended the monopoly system and agreed to liberalize the gaming industry in the early 21st century, the gaming industry in Macao has been prospering and therefore the economy in the region has developed vigorously. However, a great number of social problems have since arisen. Juvenile gambling is one of the major social problems that have attracted most public attention. This research is an empirical study on current juvenile gambling in Macao. In addition, the reasons why teenagers in Macao participate in gambling activities and the causes of pathological gambling will be analyzed through four criminological theories, namely: self control theory, social control theory, general strain theory and social learning theory. Purposive sampling is used in this research and 1,146 secondary school students in Macao participated in the survey. The major findings are as follows: 1. 51.8% of teenagers in Macao have participated in some kind of gambling activities in the last 12 months. On average, they spend MOP $ 189.91 on gambling each month. After the analysis of DSM-IV-MR-J criteria, it shows that 1.8% of teenagers are classified as pathological gamblers. 2. As far as the reasons why teenagers in Macao participate in gambling activities and the causes of pathological gambling are concerned, this research found that self control theory, social control theory, general strain theory and social learning theory are all applicable to help explain the degree of gambling participation of the teenagers and also to explain pathological gambling. Among the four criminological theories, social learning theory has the greatest capacity to help explaining the problems, while social control theory is least capable. In summary, this research suggests that the reasons why teenagers participate in or even become addicted to gambling are due to the following factors: school, family, peer and individual. By pushing and pulling each other, these factors interact and lead to the problems of gambling. If a teenager does not feel happy in school or at home and meets some friends who are in the habit of gambling, he will participating in the gambling activities with his friends, dependent on whether hi is a person who is against traditional values and has low self-control. By participating in the gambling activities, the teenager can forget about the unhappiness in his life and can seek instant gratification and also identify with his friends. The more he participates in gambling, the more addicted he becomes. In the end, pathological gambling may result. Based on the findings above, this research suggests the following prevention policies: 1. The government provides necessary resources, and establishes a school-centered preventive system which is based on a public health model. 2. The government provides necessary resources, and helps the school to provide the students with a friendlier environment which encourages interaction between teachers and students. It can help the students to have a happier campus life. 3. The government provides necessary resources, and guides parents how to teach their children and promote self control. This research has examined: the applicability of using criminological theories to explain specific behavior within this society, the overlap between the concept and measurement of criminological theories, generalizations from self control theory and the theoretical foundation of the juvenile gambling phenomenon.
