Toulouse, ENSAE, 1996. http://www.theses.fr/1996ESAE0018.

Full text
Abstract:

Neveu, Christopher Louis. "Four Pools | Four Qualities." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/82031.

Full text
Abstract:
Programatically, this thesis takes the form of a bath house, carved into the side of the Palisades that run along the New River, near Eggleston, VA. Natural springs were formed within the cliffs, that run off into the New River below. The bath house becomes place for patrons to bathe in the mineral baths in a meditative setting. This thesis investigates qualities of light and shadow, and how these elements activate the interior surfaces of form. The architecture is formed by the introduction of light and shadow in ways that are meant to create moments of pause. The building consists of a series of separate pools that allow natural light to enter through various light wells. Architecture is decided in space by light and shadow. This decisiveness requires the existence of rooms. It is upon the interior surfaces that light and shadow become present. The light wells above allow certain sensible interactions to occur between the architecture of the form and the shallow pools of water.<br>Master of Architecture

Rafaralahy, Hugues. Nancy 1, 1993. http://www.theses.fr/1993NAN10223.

Full text
Abstract:

Peter, Denise. "W.B. Yeats' Four Plays for Dancers : the search for unity." Thesis, McGill University, 1995. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=23732.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes that Yeats found in certain conventions of the Noh drama a realization and defense of his idea of unity of culture, which his Noh-like Four Plays for Dancers illustrates. Yeats' use of recurrent imagery in the dance plays expresses his belief in a unity of culture defined and evoked by an image and stems in part from the pattern of images he discovered in the Pound-Fenollosa translations of the Noh. The imagery of the poetic text reappears in symbolic visual designs or is coordinated with music and dance in the production of the plays. The importance of the spoken word above all determined the basis of the association of arts with which Yeats characterized unity of culture and shaped his adaptation and occasional misconception of the staging techniques of the Noh. A common love of vivid, allusive words joined the audience for whom the dance plays were written. When Yeats stated that they were modelled on the audience of the Noh, his perception was colored, as usual, by his own priorities and experience.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Nicolas Poussin's landscapes, The Four Seasons, 1660-1664, have been the subject of extensive analysis because of their enigmatic character and the modulation in Poussin's style in his last years. The meaning of these representations has, however, remained cryptic and, to some extent, neglected.<br>This thesis attempts to make a contribution toward unravelling the mystery of The Four Seasons. These profound works reflect Poussin's religious persuasion, knowledge of which is essential to an understanding of them. Poussin's religious convictions, however, are difficult to discern with any precision; for, although he died a Catholic, he was closely associated with the progressive thinking that influenced religious belief in the Baroque age, much of which was rejected by the Church of Rome.<br>Nevertheless, Poussin was undoubtedly a devout Christian, inspired particularly by the early Christian Fathers and Stoics. It is in nature, above all, though, that he perceived God's presence and message which he strove to capture in his "altarpiece" to the seasons.

Derventzas, Konstantinos. "IT-Outsourcing for four organizations." Thesis, Mälardalen University, School of Sustainable Development of Society and Technology, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mdh:diva-10030.

Full text
Abstract:
<p><strong>Introduction</strong></p><p>IT-Outsourcing is a concept that describes the supply of part or all of Information Technology (IT) services by an external supplier company, known as IT-vendor, to a client company. The ‘IS-Improvement’ is one of the three strategic views of IT-Outsourcing for clients and involves advantages like focusing on core business, cost reductions and increase of IT-resources efficiency.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>Objectives</strong></p><p>The purpose of this project is to discover, describe and analyze the most critical aspects in implementing IT-Outsourcing and the critical aspects of the ‘IS Improvement’ view of IT-Outsourcing for clients, to further let IT-vendors know how they can improve on delivering their services to their customers.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>Research Question</strong></p><p>“<em>Which are the most critical factors </em><em>in implementing IT-Outsourcing and which are the critical aspects of the IS-improvement view of IT-Outsourcing for four organizations as clients?</em>”</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>Method</strong></p><p>This project follows an exploratory research method. It is mainly an action research but there is also an element of a realist research. The subject of IT-Outsourcing was chosen because it is part of IT-Management. The analysis is based on primary data collected from four organizations in the European Union (EU) that were chosen because they use IT intensively in their activities. Access to these organizations was because of convenience since it was enabled by personal contacts. Two organizations were in the shipping business, the third organization was an electronic-devices factory, and the fourth was a university. The data collection was based on three face-to-face interviews with the IT-Managers of the organizations, and one response was collected by electronic means since the fourth respondent (also IT-Manager) completed and sent the questionnaire by e-mail. The interviews were based on a semi-structured questionnaire, that in turn was formed based on the content of the critical literature review. The critical literature review was formed from books and articles found at Mälardalens Högskola’s library and databases, and interlibrary loans. The data were inserted in a table for content analysis that helped count the frequencies of the various factors of IT-Outsourcing. The results were drawn based on qualitative analysis and they were tested against dialectical critique.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>Conclusions</strong></p><p>The most critical factors in implementing IT-outsourcing for these four organizations are: Hardware maintenance is the most critical area to be outsourced. Low costs of services, supplier’s stability and reputation are the most critical factors in selecting an IT-vendor. Supplier’s understanding of client’s objectives is the most critical factor for a successful relationship between clients and IT-vendors. Precise definition of costs is the most critical factor to be included in an IT-Outsourcing contract, and selective/partial IT-Outsourcing is the IT-sourcing solution preferred by these organizations. The ‘IS-Improvement’ view of IT-Outsourcing for these four organizations is not valid, but the respondents’ words indicate ways that IT-Outsourcing can be improved to achieve increased IT-resources efficiency.</p>

Duretz, Marc.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Empirical interest in promoting virtues has dramatically increased over the last decade. The present study will focus primarily on the warmth-based virtues of forgiveness and humility, and the conscientiousness-based virtues of patience and self-control. I introduced participants (N = 135) to a workbook intended to promote one of these four virtues, or to promote general positivity for participants in a workbook control condition. I hypothesized that virtue workbooks would produce higher levels of the target virtue, more so than in both a non-action control condition (n = 33) and in a control condition that completes a workbook that promotes general positivity. The forgiveness, humility, patience, and positivity workbooks did indeed build their respective targets. Virtue workbook participants reaped more benefits than the positivity participants, but both improved more than the control condition. These findings suggest that workbook interventions serve a valuable purpose in the promotion of goodness.

Abstract:
This thesis aims at investigating empirically the effects of two financing strategies for low-income countries; debt relief and taxation. The first three chapters focus on the consequences of debt relief for public finance and new external financing. Results show that cancellations granted under the multilateral debt relief initiatives have been beneficial for recipient countries by significantly improving the composition of their budget and widening financing opportunities. However, findings also underline the risk of moral hazard stemming from these initiatives which thus calls for continuous sound fiscal management, especially after debt relief. Lastly, the fourth chapter revisits the taxation-growth nexus adopting a macro-micro approach. Using firm-level data in developing countries our findings suggest that taxation is favorable to firms' activity, especially when firms operate in poor countries characterized by a significant lack of infrastructure. Moreover, this effect of taxation seems to be maximal in the absence of corruption, hence reaffirming the need for healthy and enabling economic and political environments in developing countries

Abstract In this paper, several three dimensional (3-D) four-wing smooth quadratic autonomous chaotic systems are analyzed. It is shown that these systems have a number of similar features. A new 3-D continuous autonomous system is proposed based on these features. The new system can generate a four-wing chaotic attractor with less terms in the system equations. Several basic properties of the new system is analyzed by means of Lyapunov exponents, bifurcation diagrams and Poincare maps. Phase diagrams show that the equilibria are related to the existence of multiple wings.

Abstract:
One in Four is an ad campaign targeted at raising awareness of on-campus sexual assault and the effects that assault has on survivors. This ad campaign will include testimonies of survivors of sexual assault within the Claremont Colleges and will be shared through social media and printed on physical flyers. This thesis will explore how marketing strategies, such as, social norms marketing, has the potential to change the audiences behavior in relation to their peers’ behavior. It will also explore the work of the Guerrilla Girls and how anonymity was crucial to their success. In addition, One in Four will examine the work of Barbara Kruger and her use of graphics and red text. Through the use of various marketing strategies and influence of the work of the Guerrilla Girls and Barbara Kruger, One In Four will be successful in it's goal of raising awareness, destigmatizing sexual assault and have survivors feel that their stories are important and they are not alone.

Abstract:
The four-punctured sphere can be viewed as a Riemann surface. It is then the quotient of the hyperbolic plane H by a Fuchsian group with signature [0; oo4]. In Chapter 1 we introduce Riemann surfaces and Fuchsian groups, in particular the subgroups of the modular group and Hecke groups. In Chapter 2 we introduce Teichmuller space via the Teichmuller space of the torus. We present the theory of Thompson [Th] and McNeilly [McNl] which gives a bijection between the Teichmuller space of groups of signature [0; oo4], denoted by T[0; oo4], and a domain V via a standard set of generators for such a group. We also describe the bijection between T[0; oo4] and T[l; oo] given by McNeilly In Chapter 3, the signatures of all Fuchsian groups Gi which contain a group G\ of signature [0; oo4] with finite index are found. For each such group inclusion G\ C G2 we find generators for the groups G\ and G2, and using the theory of Chapter 2 find the corresponding points in T[0; oo4]. The interesting case is when Gi is a triangle group in which case we say the corresponding G\ is exceptional. We also find the groups containing a subgroup of signature [1; 00] with finite index and the corresponding points in T[l; 00]. We introduce the Teichmuller modular group of a group of signature [0; oo4], and study its action on T[0; oo4]. We find that exceptional groups are congruence subgroups of the modular group and have rational points in V. We also give a short proof of a Theorem of Thompson [Th]. Finally, in Chapter 4 we introduce NEC groups and consider those NEC groups that have a group of signature [0; oo4] as their canonical Fuchsian group. Corresponding to these groups are some one-dimensional subspaces of T[0; oo4] which we calculate. We conclude with a brief discussion of further work related to onedimensional subspaces.

Abstract:
The spinc-invariants for a compact smooth simply-connected oriented four-manifold, as defined by Pidstrigach and Tyurin, are studied in this thesis. Unlike the Donaldson polynomial invariants, they are defined by cutting down the moduli space M' of '1-instantons', which is the subspace of the moduli space M of anti-self-dual connections parametrizing coupled (spinc) Dirac operators with non-trivial kernel. Our main goal is to study the relationship between these spinc-invariants and the Donaldson polynomial invariants. The 'jumping subset' M' defined a cohomology class P of M which is given by the generalised Porteous formula. When the index l of the coupled Dirac operator is 1, the two smooth invariants are the same by definition. When l = 0 (or when M is compact), the spinc-invariants are expressable as a Donaldson polynomial evaluating the 'Porteous class' P. Our main results concern the first two non-trivial cases l = -1 and -2, when the generalised Porteous formula can not be applied directly. Using cut-and-paste arguments to the moduli space M, we show that for the former case the spinc-invariants and the contracted Donaldson invariants differ by a correction term. It is the number of points in the immediate lower stratum of the Uhlenbeck compactification times a universal 'linking invariant' on S4, which is obtained by computing an example (the K3 surface). The case when l = -2 and dimM = 8 is a parametrized version of the l = -1 situation and the correction term, which involves the same 'linking invariant', is obtained from a suitable obstruction theory.

Thesis (Ph. D. in Linguistics)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Linguistics and Philosophy, 2013.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 259-269).<br>The main part of this dissertation consists of four loosely connected chapters on the semantics of modals. The chapters inform each other and employ similar methods, but generally each one is self-contained and can be read in isolation. Chapter 2 introduces new semantics for epistemic modality. I argue that the epistemic modal base consists of the propositions that can be obtained by the interlocutors early enough to affect their resolution of their current practical goal. Integrated into the standard contextualist semantics, the new definition successfully accounts for two sets of data that have been claimed to falsify standard contextualism, namely from disagreement dialogues and complements of attitude verbs. Chapter 3 traces the historical rise of the may-under-hope construction, as in I hope we may succeed. In that construction, the modal does not contribute its normal existential modal force. It turns out that despite the construction's archaic flavor in Present-Day English, it is a very recent innovation that arose not earlier than the 16th century. I put forward a hypothesis that the may-under-hope construction arose as the replacement of an earlier construction where the inflectional subjunctive under verbs of hoping was used to mark a specific type of formal hopes about good health. Chapter 4 proposes that O(ld) E(nglish) *motan, the ancestor of Modern English must, was a variable-force modal somewhat similar to the variable-force modals of the American Pacific Northwest. I argue that in Alfredian OE, motan(p) presupposed that if p gets a chance to actualize, it will. I also argue that several centuries later, in the 'AB' dialect, Early Middle English *moten is was genuinely ambiguous between possibility and necessity. Thus a new trajectory of semantic change is discovered: variable force, to ambiguity between possibility and necessity, to regular necessity. Chapter 5 argues that, first, restrictions on the relative scope of deontics and clausemate negation can hardly be all captured within the syntactic component, and second, that capturing some of them can be due to semantic filters on representations. I support the second claim by showing how such semantic filters on scope may arise historically, using Russian stoit 'should' and English have to as examples.<br>by Igor Yanovich.<br>Ph.D.in Linguistics

Abstract:
This thesis work presents a model predictive control (MPC) based trajectory planner forhigh speed lane change and low speed parking scenarios of autonomous four wheel steering(4WS) vehicle. A four wheel steering vehicle has better low speed maneuverabilityand high speed stability compared with normal front wheel steering(FWS) vehicles. TheMPC optimal trajectory planner is formulated in a curvilinear coordinate frame (Frenetframe) minimizing the lateral deviation, heading error and velocity error in a kinematicdouble track model of a four wheel steering vehicle. Using the proposed trajectory planner, simulations show that a four wheel steering vehicle is able to track different type ofpath with lower lateral deviations, less heading error and shorter longitudinal distance.<br>I detta avhandlingsarbete presenteras en modellbaserad prediktiv kontroll (MPC) -baseradbanplaneringsplan f¨or h¨oghastighetsbanan och l°aghastighetsparametrar f¨or autonomtfyrhjulsdrift (4WS). Abstract:

Abstract:

Berger, Isaac Harold. "A STUDY OF THE COST-UTILITY OF OUTCOMES OF VARIOUS METHODS OF INCREASING THE FOUR-YEAR GRADUATION RATE IN OSCEOLA COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2005. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/2074.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine which interventions were deemed to be effective at increasing the four-year graduation rate in Osceola District Schools. This had become a concern due to the fact that this rate had decreased in recent years, and may be utilized as a predictor of the dropout rate. The interventions were then prioritized according to Levin's cost-utility theory, so that the order of implementation could be prioritized. The study was conducted in January and February of 2005, and responses were elicited from 600 people. Students currently in Osceola District Schools high schools comprised 200 of this total, and 400 former Osceola District Schools high school students were also selected. The 600 people were randomly selected from directory information lists supplied by the school district. A questionnaire consisting of thirteen interventions that could be utilized to increase the four-year graduation rate was mailed to them a few days after an introductory letter was mailed. A letter enclosed with the questionnaire requested that they fill out and return the questionnaire in the enclosed return envelope. A postcard was mailed as a reminder to people that may not have responded to the letters, and had not yet filled out the questionnaire. Returned questionnaires were then used to calculate mean effectiveness ratings. Of the 600 questionnaires mailed, 154 were returned, and 123 contained no non-responses, and were therefore usable for this study. The order in which the cost-utility in the study prioritized the implementation of the thirteen interventions was: Offer three-year diploma options. Have mentors available for students, with a mentor for every 100 students. Have ten percent more seats for academy/ magnet/ vocational programs. Offer a diploma option that removes the FCAT graduation requirement. Offer a diploma option that removes the Algebra I graduation requirement. Offer a diploma option that lowers the 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) graduation requirement on a four point scale to a 1.9 GPA. Offer a diploma option that removes the FCAT Algebra I and GPA graduation requirements. High school classes should have a maximum of 25 students Grades four to eight classes should have a maximum of 22 students Kindergarten to third grade classes should have a maximum of 18 students. Schools larger than 500 students should be divided into smaller learning units, such as schools-within-a-school. Free quality preschool should be provided. Guidance counselors should be available, with one for every 100 students. Four of the items would require statute changes before they could be implemented. They were the interventions that concerned GPA, Algebra I, and the FCAT graduation requirements. The items were prioritized because fiscal constraints may not permit all of the interventions to be implemented, and the interventions that yielded the greatest improvement in four-year graduation rate per unit cost were to be implemented first.<br>Ed.D.<br>Department of Educational Research, Technology and Leadership<br>Education<br>Educational Leadership

Abstract:
The object of my thesis is to investigate projectively related metrics, that is, metrics whose Levi-Civita connections admit exactly the same family of unparametrised geodesics on 4-dimensional manifolds with positive de nite or neutral (+;+;;) signatures. The general idea is to study the relationship between projectively related metrics and the holonomy types of each metric. The main technique presented in the work requires a certain classification of the curvature map which has been developed by G. S. Hall and D. P. Lonie in the case of Lorentz signature. In chapter 1, some of the background theory will be given. This will include an introduction to bivector algebra, a revision of the Riemann curvature tensor and holonomy theory and, in particular, the fundamental equations for projective related metrics. A brief historical and bibliographical review is also given. The subsequent chapter gives the details of projective related metrics of positive definite signature. In x2.1, the structure of so(4) is described with an emphasis on the canonical decomposition of bivectors and then the subalgebras of so(4) follow. In x2.2., the problem of projective related metrics can be solved case by case decided by holonomy types. In many of these cases, the connections are found to be necessarily equal. A few cases with nontrivial projectively related metrics have been found by only in the rather special case of curvature class D, and the metrics are given in the appendices. An extension of this method to spaces of neutral signature (+;+;;) is made in chapter 3. The rst part of the chapter discusses the algebraic structure of a 4-dimensional vector space with such a metric. In contrast to metrics of the other two signatures (positive definite and Lorentz), this metric admits totally null planes. The structure of the Lie algebra so(2; 2) can be described through the action on totally null planes. The classification of all subalgebras of so(2,2) is then obtained in terms of self-dual and anti-self-dual bivectors. In most holonomy types and curvature classes, the problem has only trivial solutions. Nontrivial projectively related metrics can be found for four holonomy types with curvature class D and two holonomy types with curvature class A.

Abstract:
This thesis examines various diversity initiatives at the Big Four accounting firms (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, and PwC). It begins by establishing the benefits gender and racial diversity can have for firm performance, providing the motivation for firms to implement diversity initiatives. Additionally, it provides an overview of the current state of gender and racial diversity at the Big Four. It then moves into an analysis of general best and worst practices for diversity initiatives. Finally, it concludes with a discussion of diversity initiatives at the Big Four and how they are measuring up to the best and worst practices. While the Big Four do have areas for improvement in their diversity programs, the majority of their initiatives are consistent with the best diversity practices. As a result, the Big Four accounting firms are effectively committing their resources to diversity initiatives that are successfully increasing workplace diversity.

This study focuses on four English teachers’ perception of the concept of culture linked to teaching language. Semi-structured interviews were carried out in order to investigate how they perceive culture in relation to both their personal views and the steering documents for the educational system. To gain a more in–depth understanding of their perception we asked them about their own perception of their teaching methods and how they in turn perceive the students’ development with regards to intercultural understanding. We applied Eva Gagnestam’s four descriptions of culture to be able to explore the different ways in which the teachers worked with the concept of culture in the English classroom.

Abstract:
Connect four is a two player game in which the players take turns placing discs in i a 6x7 grid. Each player has discs in their own specific color. Their aim is to get four of their own discs in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal alignment. While doing so they have to prevent their opponent from getting four of their discs in a row. In this project, the purpose is to design and build a connect four playing robot, that can play connect four opposite a human. To do so, the robot has to be able to physically move and drop discs in the grid of the game, it also has to be able to figure out in which column to drop the discs, and detect where the player puts their discs. To achieve this, a demonstrator was built. It consists of a frame around the game, onto which motors are placed to move and drop discs into the game. Photoreflectors are placed above each column to detect the player’s discs. The motors and sensor are controlled by an Arduino, and a Raspberry Pi is tasked to run the AI algorithm to calculate the next moves for the robot. This was done with a satisfying result and at the end of the project the demonstrator could play connect four against a human opponent and almost always win.<br>Fyra i rad är ett sällskapsspel för två personer i vilket de två spelarna turas om att lägga brickor i ett rutnät på 6x7 rutor.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Commercial swab transport systems are used for collection and transporting of fecal and other microbiological samples. This system must maintain viability and contribute to survival of microorganisms during transport to the laboratory. Four swab transport systems have been compared, eSwab, Σ- Transwab and fecalSwab, all three with flocked swabs, and Copan Venturi Transystem with rayon swabs. The study followed the recommendations from the Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute; document M40-A for recovery of Samonella, Shigella, Yersinia and Neisseria gonorrhoeae after storage for 0, 6, 24, 48 and 72 h at room- (22-25°C) and refrigerated (2-8ºC) temperature. A fecal sample has also been inoculated with Salmonella or Shigella to simulate a fecal sample positive for Salmonella or Shigella. Recovery of all strains was higher with eSwab, Σ- Transwab and fecalswab than with Copan Venturi Transystem stored at both temperatures. A heavy growth was observed with all transport systems after storage for 24, 48 and 72 h at room temperature, except for Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Shigella. The number of CFU for all strains was constant up to 72 h at refrigerated temperature with Copan Venturi Transystem. In the experiment with fecal sample recovery of Salmonella and Shigella was best with fecalSwab at both storage temperatures. ESwab, Σ- Transwab and fecalSwab are equivalent and can be used as an alternative to Copan Venturi Transystem with better survival of enteric pathogens and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Fecal samples should be refrigerated in order to avoid heavy overgrowth of fecal flora.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis we bring together two areas of mathematics; Hamiltonian dynamics and data assimilation. We construct a four dimensional variational (4d Var) data assimilation scheme for two Hamiltonian systems. This is to reflect the Hamiltonian behaviour observed in the atmosphere. We know, for example, that potential vorticity is conserved in atmospheric models. However, current data assimilation schemes do not explicitly include such physical relationships. In this thesis, by considering the two and three body problems, we demonstrate how such characteristic behaviour can be included in the data assimilation schemes. In our 4d Var schemes we add a weak constraint that imposes the conservation of the Hamiltonian, the total energy, at the initial time. This is effectively imposing an energy constraint from one data assimilation window to the next. Our results imply that these weak constraints affect the underlying geometry of the resulting data assimilation solution. We also demonstrate that this constraint reduces the error on this solution and the forecast. By imposing this constraint we are including additional information to the system. Due to the additional term in the cost function gradient, the analysis can only change in such a way as to satisfy this weak constraint. This thesis therefore demonstrates that the inclusion of similar weak con-straints, perhaps using the conservation of potential vorticity, could improve the analysis and forecast for atmospheric models.
