Abstract:
One of the main features of digital technology is that the digital media can be duplicated and reproduced easily. However, this allows unauthorized and illegal use of information, i.e. data piracy. To protect digital media against illegal attempts a signal, called watermark, is embedded into the multimedia data in a robust and invisible manner. A watermark is a short sequence of information, which contains owner&rsquo<br>s identity. It is used for evidence of ownership and copyright purposes. In this thesis, we use fractional Fourier transformation (FrFT) domain, which combines space and spati

Abstract:
Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a common and often inconspicuous wound that is frequently associated with chronic low-grade symptoms and cognitive dysfunction. Previous evidence suggests that daily blue wavelength light therapy may be effective at reducing fatigue and improving sleep in patients recovering from mTBI. However, the effects of light therapy on recovering brain structure remain unexplored. In this study, we analyzed white matter diffusion properties, including generalized fractional anisotropy, and the quantity of water diffusion in isotropic (i.e., isotropic diffusion) and

The University of Arizona Biodiesel Pilot Plant aims to convert waste cooking oil from restaurants located at the university’s student unions into biodiesel to fuel campus vehicles. With the help of the project’s community industrial partner, Grecycle, students from a variety of majors have constructed a 100-gallon single reactor plant and quality-testing laboratory. The waste cooking oil is collected from student unions, filtered, and deposited at the plant. From there, students use chemical processes to convert the waste oil into biodiesel meeting the American Society for Testing and M

Since the second half of the 19th century the meat consumption has globally increased, and it is estimate by the scientists and the global organizations (e.g. FAO) that the trend will continue to increase. In the large retail sector, the growing demand of animal-by products is reflected in the increase of cereals production and the use of fertilizer, but also in the increment of livestock effluents and agricultural waste. Although the common purpose is to limit the nitrogen damages due to the livestock effluents pollution (Nitrates Directive), the attention is now focused on the phosphorus iss

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biotechnology that employs natural microbial metabolism under oxygen-free conditions to stabilize organic waste. AD has been shown to be the most environmentally sustainable technology for treating the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), as it allows for the recovery of energy and nutrients from the waste. AD of OFMSW also saves landfill space and reduces leachate generation and fugitive methane emissions from landfills. High-solids AD (HS-AD) technologies (those designed to process feedstocks with >15% total solids content) have been shown to yield

Xie, Shuqiao. "Characterisation of time-dependent mechanical behaviour of trabecular bone and its constituents." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31389.

Full text
Abstract:
Trabecular bone is a porous composite material which consists of a mineral phase (mainly hydroxyapatite), organic phase (mostly type I collagen) and water assembled into a complex, hierarchical structure. In biomechanical modelling, its mechanical response to loads is generally assumed to be instantaneous, i.e. it is treated as a time-independent material. It is, however, recognised that the response of trabecular bone to loads is time-dependent. Study of this time-dependent behaviour is important in several contexts such as: to understand energy dissipation ability of bone; to understand the

Abstract:
This thesis explores the clock and data recovery (CDR) for the high-speed blind-sampling ADC-based receivers. This exploration results in two new CDR architectures that reduce the receiver complexity and save the ADC power and area compared to the previous work. The two proposed CDR architectures constitute the primary contributions of this thesis. The first proposed architecture, a 2x feed-forward CDR architecture, eliminates the interpolating feedback loop, used in the previously reported CDRs, in order to reduce the CDR circuit complexity. Instead of the feedback loop, the proposed architec
