Abstract:
An historical review of some approaches to the classification of diatoms is presented. The class Fragilariophyceae was described by F. Round et al. (1990) and consisted of 54 genera of araphid diatoms. Over the past 25 years, 43 genera and two families within the class have been described. The systematic position of the family Plagiogrammaceae in the class of araphid diatoms was based on phylogenetic molecular studies. According to these data and unique morphological features, we propose a new order, Plagiogrammales ord. nov., with the type genus Plagiogramma. The name of the order Protoraphid

Abstract:
A new species Fragilaria shirshovii sp. nov. is described on the basis of molecular and morphological investigations. Cells were isolated from surface levels of desalinated water masses in the zone of mixing river and marine waters in the Gulf of Ob. Morphology of this species is analyzed with light and scanning electron microscopy. Phylogenetic analysis was performed based on the analysis of partials 18S rRNA and rbcL genes. The paper discusses the differences between F. shirshovii sp. nov. and related species of the taxon Fragilariaceae.

Diatoms are a group of unicellular eukaryotes that are essential primary producers in aquatic ecosystems. The dynamic nature of their habitat necessitates a quick and specific response to various stresses. However, the molecular mechanisms of their physiological adaptations are still underexplored. The difficulty lies in the differentiation of the overall valve outline and striation pattern of these species from members of Staurosirella D.M.Williams & Round (1988: 274). Under scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the striae of species of Punctastriata are typically multiseriate, the consequence of a profuse formation of viminules.
