Varieties in a Genotype-Dependent Manner." Plants 8, no. 9 (September 7, 2019): 336. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/plants8090336.

Abstract:
Drought stress is one of the most severe conditions for plants, especially in the face of the emerging problem of global warming. This issue is important when considering economically relevant crops, including the tomato. For these plants, a promising solution is the valorization of local agrobiodiversity as a source of genetic variability. In this paper we investigated how six Italian tomato varieties react to a prolonged period of water depletion. We used a multidisciplinary approach, from genetics to plant physiology and cytology, to provide a detailed overview of the response of plants to stress. The varieties analyzed, each characterized by a specific genetic profile, showed a genotype-specific response with the variety ‘Fragola’ being the most resistant and the variety ‘Pisanello’ the most susceptible. For all the parameters evaluated, ‘Fragola’ performed in a manner comparable to that of control plants. On the contrary, ‘Pisanello’ appeared to be more affected and showed an increase in the number of stomata and a drastic increase in antioxidants, a symptom of acute oxidative stress. Our work suggests the existence of a valuable reservoir of genetic biodiversity with more drought-tolerant tomato genotypes opening the way to further exploitation and use of local germplasm in breeding programs.

Abstract:
Many targeted treatment studies have been carried out in individuals with Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) guided by animal studies from the Fragile X Mental Retardation 1 (FMR1) knock out (KO) mice and the fragile X Drosophila studies. Here we review the many medications that have been studied in patients with FXS and some of these medications are available for clinical use by wise clinicians. Other medications are not currently available by prescription because they are not approved by the FDA. No medication has received specific approval for treatment of FXS, although some have shown benefit from clinical studies. There is much to be done in the treatment of those with FXS and this report describes those pharmacological treatments that target the neurobiological mechanisms that are dysregulated by the lack of the Fragile X Protein (FMRP) in those with FXS.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In recent years, Senegal’s developed a program of index insurance to cover farmers from economic losses due to drought. I investigate this emerging market in light of Jane Guyer’s question: “What is a ‘risk’ as a transacted ‘thing’?” To grasp the social practices required to make “rainfall deficit” a transferable risk, I explore the climate and market infrastructure that brings it into existence and follows actors who function as brokers allowing the risk to circulate from Senegalese fields to the global reinsurance industry. I show that the strategies set up to convince farmers to integrate a green and rational capitalist management of climate risks are very fragile, and the index insurance program only endures because it is embedded in the broader political economy of rural development based on debt and international aid.

Abstract:
Abstract. Previous research demonstrates that membership of majority groups is often perceived as more fragile than membership of minority groups. Four studies ( N1 = 90, N2 = 247, N3 = 500, N4 = 1,176) investigated whether this was the case for heterosexual identity, relative to gay identity. Support for fragile heterosexuality was found using various methods: sexual orientation perceptions of a target who engaged in incongruent behavior, free-responses concerning behaviors required to change someone’s mind about a target’s sexual orientation, agreement with statements about men/women’s sexual orientation, and agreement with gender-neutral statements about sexual orientation. Neither participant nor target gender eliminated or reversed this effect. Additionally, we investigated multiple explanations (moderators) of the perceived difference in fragility between heterosexual identity and gay identity and found that higher estimates of the gay/lesbian population decreased the difference between the (higher) perceived fragility of heterosexual identity and the (lower) perceived fragility of gay identity.

Abstract:
AbstractLaver [L] and others [G-S] have shown how to make the supercompactness or strongness of κ indestructible by a wide class of forcing notions. We show, alternatively, how to make these properties fragile. Specifically, we prove that it is relatively consistent that any forcing which preserves κ<κ and κ+, but not P(κ), destroys the measurability of κ, even if κ is initially supercompact, strong, or if I1(κ) holds. Obtained as an application of some general lifting theorems, this result is an “inner model” type of theorem proved instead by forcing.

Abstract:
Jazz, today a broadly defined, global form of improvised music, remains a music between heaven and earth, with its roots in both nightclubs and churches. Jazz can be dance music, as well as music that triggers emotions, memories, and subjective images. It can also lead to experiences of transcendence. In which ways, though, do jazz artists connect their spiritual and religious experiences and beliefs with their individual musical language? In contrast to Western, composed sacred music, jazz generates religious meaning through its improvisatory practices, which unfold differently in each performance, depending on the performers, listeners, and performance spaces. Often, jazz musicians feel the poetic quality of their music to reside in the ambiguity and “fragile” religiosity of their music. This article discusses from a historical and contemporary perspective the “fragilization” processes at work in religiously inspired jazz. It distinguishes different levels of religious meaning, purpose, and spiritual experience. In so doing, it explores productive resonances between the characteristics of jazz and Paul Corrigan’s definition of “postsecular” American poetry written in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

Abstract:
Abstract Where analyses of the city as a landscape often visualize 'urban-ness' through images of tall buildings and concrete, this article thinks about how the genre of romance might turn our attention to other genres of city-as-landscape. I offer Johannesburg from this orientation through a reading of its history as a 'Secret Garden'. Most romance genres rely on a temporal closure of 'happily-ever-after', but here I am interested in other possible endings. This reading of romance I draw from David Scott's (2004) account of romance as a temporal relation to anticolonial struggle. The article examines Kagiso Lediga's 2018 film, Catching Feelings. The film is framed around the narrative of the 'cuckold', which I argue articulates the libidinal economy between the protagonist Max and his friend, Heiner. This libidinal economy is also presented through the landscape of the city. While more accurately defined as a film within the genre of 'bro' or 'lad lit', what Lediga's film does share with chick lit is the way that it borrows from the form of the fairy tale. Through this fairy tale, I locate emergent and continuous forms of masculinity in a history of Johannesburg's landscape through the visual language of the domesticated forest. Through the cuckold as a fairy tale, Lediga offers the city not simply as the place of the action, but as an object of desire, or of fantasy that makes his fragile protagonist 'strange'.
