Humans exhibit framing effects when making choices, appraising decisions involving losses differently from those involving gains. To directly test for the evolutionary origin of this bias, we examined decision-making in humans' closest living relatives: bonobos ( Pan paniscus ) and chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes ). We presented the largest sample of non-humans to date ( n = 40) with a simple task requiring minimal experience. Apes made choices between a ‘framed’ option that provided preferred food, and an alternative option that provided a constant amount of intermediately preferred food. In th

Abstract:
Much ink has been spilled recently on the existential risks and potential of Artificial Intelligence. Between breathy utopian think-pieces and apocalyptic proclamations of the end of meaning in human life, an entire spectrum of outlooks muddies the waters on insight-driven and human-focused paths forward. While philosophical musings and abstract plans are prevalent, relatively little attention has been paid to underwriting integrative deployment as a problem which yields to analysis. The question 'when should an autonomous system step in' is typically framed as demanding a comprehensive world-

Abstract:
A three-piece bogie acts as a support for the freight train car bodies so that they can run on straight and curved tracks. It also absorbs the vibrational energy generated by the track. The three main parts of a traditional three-piece bogie are two side frames and a bolster. The side frames run parallel to the rails and are connected to each other by the bolster, which runs perpendicular to the rail. The side frames are connected to the axles, which are directly connected to the wheels that run on the track through the primary suspension. The primary suspension includes the bearing adapter an

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The arc welding process is essential for motorcycle frames, which are difficult to form in one piece because of their complex shapes, because a single frame has dozens of joints. Many of the damaged parts of the frames under development are from welds. Predicting the strength of welds with high reliability is important to ensure that development proceeds without any rework. In developing frames, CAE is utilized to build up strength before prototyping. Detailed weld shapes are not applicable to FE models of frames because

Abstract:
A Train Operation and Energy Simulator (TOES™) model was created in order to investigate the potential benefits of replacing three-piece trucks with the “Steered Frame Truck” currently under development. Loaded coal trains were simulated with three-piece trucks and with Steered Frame Trucks. Both trains were modeled traveling on Norfolk Southern’s Pocahontas division from MP V435 to V399. The consist and direction of travel are based on actual trains in service. It was found that the model predicts several benefits for replacing three-piece trucks with Steered Frame Trucks. Abstract:
Short-term rentals mediated by digital platforms have positive and negative impacts that are unevenly distributed among socio-economic groups and places. Detrimental impacts on the housing market and quality of life of long-term residents have been particular contentious in some cities. • In the 12 cities studied in the report (Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Prague, Rome and Vienna), city governments have responded differently to the growth of short-term rentals. • The emerging local regulations of short-term rentals take multiple forms and exhibi
