Abstract:
This article delves into the intricate cognitive and linguistic dimensions of the term “frame” within contemporary linguistics. Originally introduced in artificial intelligence to organize databases, the concept of a frame has evolved to become a pivotal tool in linguistic analysis, enabling the depiction of diverse worldviews inherent to different languages. A frame is conceptualized as a structure comprising nodes (concepts) and connections, functioning akin to gestalt units by integrating sensory and rational elements. Charles Fillmore's definition positions frames as cognitive structures associated with the knowledge represented by words, encompassing both linguistic and extralinguistic information.

Abstract:
Semantics is one of three levels of language analysis: phonological, grammatical, and semantic. Semantics is a field of linguistics that studies the relationship between linguistic signs and the objects they signify, or in other words, a field of linguistic study that investigates what language means and means. Semantics is a field of linguistics that is closely related to other social sciences, such as sociology or anthropology, and even to philosophy and psychology. Sociology is related to semantics due to the fact that the identity of social groups can be demonstrated by the use of certain words to indicate meaning.

Abstract:
Although recent streams of research have suggested that emotions play a key role in generating framing effects, little is known about the affective dimension of gain and loss framing and its potential impact on persuasion. The current study adopted a meta-analytical approach, synthesizing over 30 years of literature ( k = 25, N = 5,772), to investigate this issue. The results indicate that message frame type directs the emotional response elicited in the audience, with gain frames inducing positive emotions ( d = .31, p = .02) and loss frames inducing negative emotions ( d = .22, p = .001). In turn, the experience of positive emotions enhances the influence of gain frames ( b = .18, p = .045), whereas negative emotions augment the effects of loss frames ( b = −.70, p = .01). These findings confirm that emotional responses may offer a pathway through which gain- and loss-framed messages exert persuasive influence. The study integrates the results with the emotions-as-frames perspective and proposes several promising avenues for future research.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes frames of reference involved in linguistic expression of spatial relations of objects, using an experimental method. Objects with and without intrinsic orientation are used as the figure object, and it is demonstrated that there exists in Japanese a phenomenon we call ‘figure-aligned mapping’, where the coordinate system on the figure object is projected onto the ground object. This is what previous studies have not reported or argued. We claim that this figure-aligned mapping belongs to the intrinsic frame of reference among the three (intrinsic, relative, and absolute) frames of reference proposed by Levinson, and some revision of his definition of the intrinsic frame is proposed so that figure-aligned mapping can be accommodated in it. The result of this study confirms the importance of the notion of coordinate system in the discussion of frames of reference.

Abstract:
The discourse analysis is of interdisciplinary character, but it is impossible without the analysis of linguistic characteristics of discourse. The problem of method of these studies remains debatable. The paper dwells on discourse analysis of election campaign in the USA in 2020. The importance of these studies is reflected not only in the task of creating the theory of discourse analysis in modern linguistics, but also in the institutionalizing of these discourse practices in modern Russian society. These pragmatic texts are notable by their topics, issues, values embodied in them, key audiences, verbal (rhetorical) tactics of image-creating. The author suggests the theory of analysis of discourse — the existence of factual, linguistic, argumentative, non-verbal frames of analysis, the frame of key communicators, the frame of performance communication, the frame of virtual communication. Due attention is given to the new subtype of political discourse — that of net origin. The paper explores the publicprivate character of political communication in the nets and characteristics of verbal behavior of its authors. The paper makes a contribution to the discourse studies suggesting an original theory of frames of discourse studies.

Abstract:
Abstract One of the key problems in comparative studies based on frame semantics is the question whether frames can become an interlingua. This paper argues that not only single frames, but their systems or frame semantic domain representations consisting of frames and their relations are also useful in comparative studies. Such a system of frames helps one explain why seemingly unrelated expressions in different languages find a common denominator in higher-order frames, thus becoming semantic-pragmatic equivalents. To support this argument, an analysis of Polish, English and German lease agreements as parallel texts is conducted and the benefits of this approach to comparative studies are presented. The study is in line with the recent FrameNet initiatives, such as the Global FrameNet and automatic translation studies. However, it differs in some methodological aspects. Instead of using FrameNet as the given lexical resource, domain specific frames are defined starting from common general concepts of the analyzed semantic domain. A text-based approach rather than a comparison of bi-sentences or phrases is adapted. The work thus introduces a new approach to comparative studies based on frame semantics and frame semantic research. It also follows the recent research trend of adding a pragmatic dimension to frame semantic analysis by analyzing frames in context.

Abstract:
Constructional analysis of corpus data can contribute to the analysis of a semantic frame, as demonstrated by a small corpus study of eat and feed. The EAT/FEED frame forms part of a taxonomy of frames including the superordinate CONSUME frame and subordinate frames of human vs. animal eating; constructional and metaphor data in the corpus shows that English covertly distinguishes human and animal eating. The EAT frame includes three phases (intake, process, and ingest), differentiated lexicogrammatically. The EAT frame also includes three domains in its domain matrix: physical, biological (nutritional) and social, all clearly differentiated by distinct constructions in the corpus. An examination of metaphors with eat and feed in the corpus demonstrate that the target domain contributes image-schematic structure to the metaphorical mapping, contrary to the Invariance Hypothesis.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on an essentially environmental and recurrent debate about foreign waste imports in Albania. The aim of this paper is to examine the frames that are used by parties in this debate in order to persuade the public in favour of or against importing foreign waste. The representative actors of the foreign waste debate are politicians and environmental activists. Salient fragments of their speeches were collected and divided into two groups (in favour vs. against). Framing analysis is a widely used methodological approach in social sciences, with various conceptualizations in different research fields, such as in communication studies (Entman 1993), linguistics (Fillmore’s semantic frames; critical discourse analysis frames or schemata), psychology (frames in thought), sociology (frames in communication). The theoretical background section of the paper provides an overview of these main approaches in defining, detecting and extracting frames. In the present paper a linguistic approach is employed to detect and reconstruct frames of the debate. Following the methodological technique applied by Touri and Koteyko (2015), the frame packages extracted are: (a) environmental threat/ damage, (b) Albania’s existing problem with its own waste, (c) the Mafia, (d) the European Union, and (e) economic development. The analysis shows that frames are crucial in understanding how an issue is characterized in persuasive discourse when speakers draw attention to certain aspects of reality by dismissing others.

This Ph.D. dissertation discusses the challenges to be faced in developing multilingual lexical resources according to the FrameNet paradigm. This work was based on Frame Semantics. The starting point was the Criminal_process frame. First, the equivalents in Portuguese for the lexical units were identified using a bilingual legal dictionary. Second, the lexical units were contrasted in order to verify the legal knowledge evoked by lexical units in English was the same legal knowledge evoked by their equivalents in Portuguese. Based on the contrastive study, legal frames representing the Brazilian legal system were created. This work could verify that semantic frames present different levels of equivalence. The differences in frame equivalence were analyzed according to the difference between innate and learned frames. Considering that the semantic frames do not present a perfect equivalence among languages, it is necessary to rethink the use of semantic frames as interlingual index to connect multilingual resources, especially legal lexical resources. This dissertation considers the possibility of using semantic types as a possible solution in a future.

Abstract:
The goal of my thesis is to analyze Donald Trump’s use of language, with specific reference to two press conferences, two formal addresses, and several tweets. For the purpose of my thesis, I will draw from the works of four major scholars: Daniel Kahneman, George Lakoff, Michael Hoey, and Drew Western. My thesis will be structured as follows: in chapter 1 I will describe the way our cognitive system is divided and the shortcuts our brain uses throughout the decision process. I will then investigate the role of frames and metaphors, both in general and in politics. Finally, I will shed light on the patterns that our minds follow every time our rational self collides with our instinctive/emotional self. In chapter 2, I will focus on communication and media effects. Starting from a brief story of media and its role in the political scenario, I will then describe various basic theories of communication. Finally I will focus on the core of the effects of modern political communication, namely agenda setting, priming, and framing. In chapter 3 I will investigate persuasion and politics, as well as persuasion in politics. Drawing upon the work of Luntz, Heath & Heath, Berger, and Cialdini, I will focus on the main recurring features that make a speech persuasive. These features will be divided into two groups: those related to the message itself, and those affecting the speaker and his role. In chapter 4 I will use the features described in chapter 3 to carry out an analysis of Trump’s language in two joint press conferences (one with Justin Trudeau and one with Angela Merkel), two formal speeches (the Inauguration Speech and the Speech before the 72nd United Nations General Assembly), and several tweets related to these four communicative events. In chapter 5 I will first summarize my investigation, and then discuss the results I obtained. In conclusion, I will outline possible work for future investigations.

Abstract:
The work in this thesis presents and evaluates a number of strategies by which English-learning children might discover the major open-class parts-of-speech in English (nouns, verbs and adjectives) on the basis of purely distributional information. Previous work has shown that parts-of-speech can be readily induced from the distributional patterns in which words occur. The research reported in this thesis extends and improves on this previous work in two major ways, related to the constructional status of the utterance contexts used for distributional analysis, and to the way in which previous studies have dealt with categorial ambiguity. Previous studies that have induced parts-of-speech from word distributions have done so on the basis of fixed “windows” of words that occur before and after the word in focus. These contexts are often not constructions of the language in question, and hence have dubious status as elements of linguistic knowledge. A great deal of recent evidence (e.g. Lieven, Pine & Baldwin, 1997; Tomasello, 1992) has suggested that children’s early language may be organized around a number of lexically-specific constructional frames with slots, such as “a X”, “you X it”, “draw X on X”. The work presented here investigates the possibility that constructions such as these may be a more appropriate domain for the distributional induction of parts-of-speech. This would open up the possibility of a treatment of part-of-speech induction that is more closely integrated with the acquisition of syntax. Three strategies to discover lexically-specific frames in the speech input to children are presented. Two of these strategies are based on the interplay between more and less frequent words in English utterances: the more frequent words, which are typically function words or light verbs, are taken to provide the schematic “backbone” of an utterance. The third strategy is based around pairs of words in which the occurrence of one word is highly predictable from that of the other, but not vice versa; from these basic slot-filler relationships, larger frames are assembled. These techniques were implemented computationally and applied to a corpus of child-directed speech. Each technique yielded a large set of lexically-specific frames, many of which could plausibly be regarded as constructions. In a comparison with a manual analysis of the same corpus by Cameron-Faulkner, Lieven and Tomasello (2003), it is shown that most of the constructional frames identified in the manual analysis were also produced by the automatic techniques. After the identification of potential constructional frames, parts-of-speech were formed from the patterns of co-occurrence of words in particular constructions, by means of hierarchical clustering. The resulting clusters produced are shown to be quite similar to the major English parts-of-speech of nouns, verbs and adjectives. Each individual word token was assigned a part-of-speech on the basis of its constructional context. This categorization was evaluated empirically against the part-of-speech assigned to the word in question in the original corpus. The resulting categorization is shown to be, to a great extent, in agreement with the manual categorization. These strategies deal with the categorial ambiguity of words, by allowing the frame context to determine part-of-speech. However, many of the frames produced were themselves ambiguous cues to part-of-speech. For this reason, strategies are presented to deal with both word and context ambiguity. Three such strategies are proposed. One considers membership of a part-of-speech to be a matter of degree for both word and contextual frame. A second strategy attempts to discretely assign multiple parts-of-speech to words and constructions in a way that imposes internal consistency in the corpus. The third strategy attempts to assign only the minimally-required multiple categories to words and constructions so as to provide a parsimonious description of the data. Each of these techniques was implemented and applied to each of the three frame discovery techniques, thereby providing category information about both the frame and the word. The subsequent assignment of parts-of-speech was done by combining word and frame information, and is shown to be far more accurate than the categorization based on frames alone. This approach can be regarded as addressing certain objections against the distributional method that have been raised by Pinker (1979, 1984, 1987). Lastly, a framework for extending this research is outlined that allows semantic information to be incorporated into the process of category induction.

This paper aims at problematizing the treatment offered to polysemy in a frame-based lexical resource. In order to achieve such an objective, we are going to establish an approximation between Frame Semantics and the cognitivist approach to polysemy, aiming at correlating frames and lexical networks. To do so, we depart from some well-known studies about polysemy, like Brèal (1992), Ullman (1964) and Lyons (1977), in order to place the subject of this study in time and space. The second theoretical chapter in this dissertation presents the paradigm known as Cognitive Linguistics, introducing its main commitments, as well as the historical background that surrounds it. In this fashion, we approach the contributions of Evans e Green (2006). We also talk about Frame Semantics (FILLMORE, 1982), a theory situated under the scope of the cognitivist paradigm which considers meaning from the encyclopaedic point of view, not distinguishing either linguistic nor contextual information in the process of meaning assignment. We also approach the FrameNet, an online lexical resource based on the principles of Frame Semantics, in order to problematize the treatment dismissed to polysemy by such a resource. Still in the second theoretical chapter, we present the cognitivist understanding of polysemy, departing, firstly, from Langacker (1987) and Geeraerts (2006), when it comes to the notions of complex category and flexibility, respectively, and, on the second hand, from Lakoff (1987) and Fauconnier and Turner (2006), which offer theoretical models that enable one to approach polysemy, like the radial categories and the conceptual blending. The applied section of this paper consists of applying the radial categories proposed by Lakoff (1987) to the descriptions of the senses related to the noun ataque and to the verb marcar – the already known application of the lexical networks – as well as to the descriptions of the frames evoked by such senses – being this the application we propose in this dissertation. We believe that our proposal of integrating network representations and frames is justifiable once (i) it follows a Cognitive Linguistics principle according to which meaning is a conceptual entity, as well as, in the same way, frames are conceptual in nature, and (ii) it follows a principle of Frame Semantics which advocates that, to know the meaning of a word, one must necessarily be able to assign the frame evoked by such a word. In this case, a frame is a wide knowledge structure that provides encyclopaedic information about the uses of such a word in a speaking community. What our proposal advocates is that the application of radial networks not only to the senses, but also to the frames evoked by them is able to provide different kinds of information to the description of polysemous items: departing from the networks filled with senses, one finds information concerning the lexicon; departing from the networks filled with frames, one has access to wider cognitive structures which underlie these senses, that is, the frames themselves. Our corpus study shows that these words, in their uses related to football, are polysemous, and, thus, they can be considered as complex categories. This result also confirms the cognitivist hypothesis that states that polysemy is a regular phenomenon in language, in opposition to what advocate the ideas presented in the first chapter of this paper, to which polysemy is an epiphenomenon, something secondary in language.

Abstract:
This study aims to contribute to the understanding of ideology conveyed by lexical items and framing of texts. Since ideology is embedded in language the frames used in newspapers construct a narrow ideological perspective for the readers to interpret subjects and events through. On the basis of editorials from The Washington Post and The Washington Times that cover President Barack Obama, the study examines how the editorials differ in their framing of Obama and which discourses and keywords occur unusually frequently in each newspaper. Findings suggest that when it comes to framing, The Washington Post allows for a relatively balanced perspective on Obama as they both support and criticise him, while The Washington Times overwhelmingly condemns and attacks Obama. A keyword analysis points to unusually frequent discourses on race, conservatives and reforms in The Washington Post, and spending, unemployment and political institutions in The Washington Times. Because of their ideological differences the newspapers construct a reality where the subject, Obama, is presented in very different ways.

The present thesis aims at the discussion of the relation that exists between the linguistic phenomenon of collocations and the concepts of Frame Semantics theory (FILLMORE, 1982; 1985). The study has arisen in the context of two research projects developed by the SemanTec group, Field – Football Expressions Dictionary (CHISHMAN, 2014), already available on the web, and Olympic Modalities Electronic Dictionary (CHISHMAN, 2014), still in early stage. Both dictionaries are organized around the notion of semantic frame proposed by Fillmore (1982; 1985), in such a way that the thesis seeks to demonstrate in which way this concept (and the concepts surrounding it) are related to the lexicographic treatment given to collocations. Thus, the literature review, presented in chapters 2 and 3, discusses the theoretical basis of the studies of collocations and Frame Semantics. The research method consists of the analysis of 74 collocations of football language. The choice of these structures was made after the study of 500 lexical combinations extracted from a Brazilian Portuguese corpus of football discourse through the Sketch Engine software. The analysis of the 74 collocations happens in two steps: the first one is dedicated to investigate the quantitative aspects of the data set and the structural characteristics of football language collocations; the second phase focuses on the relation between these combinations and the theoretical assumptions of Frame Semantics and its computational counterpart, FrameNet, in order to see in which way this theoretical outline treats collocations in lexicographic contexts. Among the main results of the first phase of analysis is the fact that a major part of football collocations are verbal, such as score goal and send the ball, which demonstrates that sport language is marked by the dynamics of actions and events that take place in a game. Besides, it was also possible to realize that nominal collocations are strongly connected to the materials, participants and places of football context. The second phase demonstrated that collocations in the scope of frame-based dictionaries act as lexical units, concept arising from FrameNet. Because they are considered lexical units, collocations are seen as frame evokers, thus characterizing them as terms that must be displayed in the main list of entries. However, it was also possible to note, however, that the frame evoking by collocations many times does not follow the traditional model of FrameNet, especially when it comes to nominal collocations that do not evoke events, but static entities, such as red card and classification table. The present thesis evidences the relevance of Frame Semantics and FrameNet for the study of complex units such as collocations in lexicographic contexts. Another aspect to be mentioned is the importance of the methodological resources of Corpus Linguistics to the area in which this study is included.

This paper investigates the cognitive processes that operate in understanding narratives in this case, the novel Macuna?ma, by M?rio de Andrade. Our work belongs to the field of Embodied-based Cognitive Linguistics and, due to its interdisciplinary nature, it dialogues with theoretical and methodological frameworks of Psycholinguistics, Cognitive Psychology and Neurosciences. Therefore, we adopt an exploratory research design, recall and cloze tests, adapted, with postgraduation students, all native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese. The choice of Macuna?ma as the novel and initial motivation for this proposal is due to the fact it is a fantastic narrative, which consists of events, circumstances and characters that are clearly distant types from what is experienced in everyday life. Thus, the novel provides adequate data to investigate the configuration of meaning, within an understanding-based model. We, therefore, seek, to answer questions that are still, generally, scarcely explored in the field of Cognitive Linguistics, such as to what extent is the activation of mental models (schemas and frames) related to the process of understanding narratives? How are we able to build sense even when words or phrases are not part of our linguistic repertoire? Why do we get emotionally involved when reading a text, even though it is fiction? To answer them, we assume the theoretical stance that meaning is not in the text, it is constructed through language, conceived as a result of the integration between the biological (which results in creating abstract imagery schemes) and the sociocultural (resulting in creating frames) apparatus. In this sense, perception, cognitive processing, reception and transmission of the information described are directly related to how language comprehension occurs. We believe that the results found in our study may contribute to the cognitive studies of language and to the development of language learning and teaching methodologies

Abstract:
The paper presents the principles of creating a database for research in lexical typology and describes the possibilities of its use as a linguistic resource. The database is built around semantic fields and frames, i. e. units of analysis in the frame-based theory of lexical typology. The database provides a universal format for storing the data; therefore, any project in lexical typology can be easily added. The database does not only store the data from previous research projects but allows anyone who wants to contribute to submit data via its web interface. The database includes examples provided by native speakers and manually annotated with translations, semantic fields, and frames, following the annotation principles adopted within the frame approach to lexical typology.

Texts can convey several types of inter-related information concerning opinions and attitudes. Such information includes the author’s attitude towards mentioned entities, attitudes of the entities towards each other, positive and negative effects on the entities in the described situations. In this paper, we described the lexicon RuSentiFrames for Russian, where predicate words and expressions are collected and linked to so-called sentiment frames conveying several types of presupposed information on attitudes and effects. We applied the created frames in the task of extracting attitudes from a large news collection.

Abstract:
Communication involves an exchange of information as well as the use of linguistic means to begin, sustain, and end conversations. Politeness is seen as one of the major language tools that facilitate smooth communication. In English, politeness has been an area of great interest in pragmatics, with various theories and corpus annotation approaches used to understand the relationship between politeness and social categories like power and gender, and to build Natural Language Processing applications. In Russian linguistics, politeness research has largely focused on lexical markers and speech strategies. This paper introduces the ongoing work on the development of the Russian Multimedia Politeness Corpus and discusses an annotation framework for oral communicative interaction, with an emphasis on adapting politeness theories for discourse annotation. The proposed approach lies in the identification of frames that encompass contextual information and the selection of relevant spatial, social, and relational features for the markup. The frames are then used to describe standard situations, which are marked by typical intentions and politeness formulae and paraverbal markers.
