Full textThe adverb is an invariable part of discourse. Defining it with clarity is not a simple assignment, as this category in grammar is filled with words of great heterogeneity, not only from the point of view of their nature, but also from the point of view of their role. The adverb can thus mean comparison, place, manner, quality, order, rank, quantity, and time, etc. It can also be used as a logical connector, negation, etc. When the adverb allows the question "where?" to be raised around the verb, one speaks of locative adverb, traditionally known as adverb of place. It is to this category of adverbs that we have devoted our study. Locative adverbs have rarely been studied exhaustively, which has led us to consider their classification in the theoretical framework of the lexicon-grammar. In order to achieve our goals, we propose to highlight the different syntactico-semantic properties of these adverbs. But before we came to that point, it was necessary to clarify the very ambivalent notion of place, since this term allows us to gather diverse realities such as places with a purely locative sense (e.g. here, up there) and places involving the idea of activities associated within them (e.g. at the cinema, at the school), to only mention these two examples. It was therefore necessary to bring to light this internal classification within the very notion of place. Thus, we speak of non-predicative locative adverbs to denote adverbs with a sense of place that also implies a sense of activity associated with those places. Similarly, predicative locative adverbs to speak of adverbs explicitly designating an activity linked to a place while referring to a location allowing such activity to be performed Given the scarcity of studies that systematically examine the link between the notion of place and adverbs of place, all the interest of our approach will have been to develop an analytical approach that accounts for the semantico-syntactic phenomena specific to locative adverbs. This study is all the more necessary due to the absence of a method of analysis often hindered the establishment of a classification of adverbs of place

Full textThis study begins with a brief description of Thai word classes, especially the class of adverbs. Unlike most Thai words which have difficulties in word classification due to lack of morphological inflection to mark their syntactic function, Thai adverbs formed by prefixes are obviously noticed. We figure out that almost all of these adverbs beginning by jà:ŋ- function as manner adverbs and adverbs with do:j- can be manner adverbs and sentential adverbs. Thai sentential adverbs have hardly been mentioned in previous linguistics studies. This present research aims to study this type of adverbs and other forms in Thai which function as French sentential adverbs. These adverbs can be divided in two main classes : conjuncts and disjuncts. In Thai, conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs are barely distinguished. Thus, this study focuses only on disjunctive adverbs comprising of style and attitudinal disjuncts. Based on Ch. Molinier & Fr. Levrier’s classification (2000), both disjuncts which are subdivided in different sub-classes are syntactically and semantically examined in this research. All classes are exemplified with French and Thai illustrative sentences. Since Thai adverbs don’t exist in every class, we have studied corresponding terms or structures and analysed in the conclusion the obtained results

Full textThis work, entitled Adverbial Construction in contemporary French was written within the theoretical framework of the Laboratoire de linguistique informatique. The aim is to describe adverbs in their various uses in sentence contexts with the view to making a dictionary of the adverbs of French, as a complement to the other dictionaries of predicates and arguments. The adverb dictionary gives syntactic, semantic, and morphological information, etc. On each adverbial lexical item, thus paving the way for many different applications, such as the automatic generation of correct sentences containing an adverb, machine translation, writing and editing aids, etc. The starting point was a corpus made up of sentences, to which Gaston Gross’s theory of object classes was applied. By describing the adverbs, simple and compound, autonomous or set adverbial phrases, we have been able to distinguish between predicative and non-predicative adverbs, autonomous and non-autonomous predicates, simple and compound, autonomous or set adverbial phrases. The thesis is developed around fives poles, each corresponding to a chapter : non autonomous predicative adverbs; the case of root predicates; autonomous predicative adverbs; second-class predicative adverbs; set adverbial phrases; non-predicative adverbs. An appendix is including featuring a dictionary of all the adverbs worked on

Indeed, il enables to "embody" a large part of our cognition and thus gratly structure our conceptual approach. Our mental representations are based on the spatial dimension when organizing more abstract notions such as time and emotions. .

Full textThis thesis studies French adverbs that are morphologically marked with a -ment suffix and of their Chinese equivalents. Due to the suffix -ment, French adverbs are easily identifiable in terms of parts of speech, but within this whole class, subclasses based on their syntactic and semantic differences are posited. According to their scope, adverbs are classically subdivided into « sentential adverbs » and « constituent adverbs ». As hinted by their denomination, phrase adverbs are associated with the whole sentence; whereas constituent adverbs are only related to one or several constituents. Two syntactic tests are used to pinpoint their difference: negation and clefting. Then sentential adverbs and constituents are subclassified adverbs according to their meaning differences. Based on the classification of French adverbs, I study the Chinese equivalents of each subclass of French adverbs. As an isolating language, Chinese has a scanty morphology. The French suffix -ment doesn't have a homogeneous corresponding form in Chinese: the Chinese equivalents of the French adverbs cans be adverbs or adverbial phrases. As in French, negation and clefting also function as syntactic tests to oppose phrase adverbs and constituent adverbs. But the syntactic criterions in French cannot be used directly in Chinese. That's why I propose new tests, such as the compatibility with the question shi-bu-shi "be-Neg. -be". Our analysis finally leads to establish a classification of Chinese equivalents to the French adverbs -ment

Rami, Asmahane. "Le circonstant de manière." Paris 4, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PA040090.
Full textUsually considered of secondary importance, the circonstant of manner has been shown throughout this research to be, in the contrary closely related to the verb, based on Gustave Guillaume's principles of language psychometric, and particularly the theory of incidence. Therefore, when it is adverb (adverb in –lies), and more specifically, adverb of the verb, whatever it is directed towards the subject, the verb or the object, the circonstant of manner is strongly linked to the verb. It qualifies the verb and keeps incident to and only to the verb. This also happens when one considers the link of the prepositional sentence impact through the preposition related semantic value (avec, sans, en and par). This happens again with the subordinate proposition of manner and mainly the comparatives introduced by like. Irrespective of its syntaxic mode, the circonstant of manner is the way of sharing the "proces". Therefore, it has an important link to the verb. This is confirmed by the analysis of the differences among phrases where the only change is the circonstant’s position (initial position / other position). The most evident case occurs with the cirsconstant being by itself a phrase syntaxically comprehensive. The actors may be absents, the circonstant of manner is the complement to be essential with respect to information. The circonstant of manner raises a real identification problem: is it circonstant or essential?
Kakoyianni, Doa Fryni. "Adverbes de phrase français et grecs : étude contrastive et perspectives didactiques." Toulouse 2, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008TOU20111.
Full textThis contrastive study examines the sentential Greek adverbs in comparison with the French adverbs of enunciation and to the adverbs of statement, for didactic and automatic translation purposes. In this descriptive and comparative study are presented, on the one hand, the morphosyntaxic structures of the adverbs of enunciation and statement in French and modern Greek and, on the other hand, semantic aspects that categorize these adverbs into sets and subsets. The adverbs concerning the psychological or moral perspective of the speaker with respect to the interlocutor, the adverbs expressing a comment of the speaker on the formulation of the statement, the adverbs relating to the source of information and the adverbs of individuation constitute the adverbs of stating, whereas the adverbs of attitude, the evaluation adverbs, the modal adverbs and the subject oriented adverbs of attitude are the groups belonging to the adverbs of statement. The thesis has examined if and to what extent the criteria and the tests valid for French apply to Greek. This was done in order to identify the two classes of adverbs of sentence, to collect and study them especially in their semantic values, their positions as well as the various types of possible morphosyntaxic variations. This study has attempted to underline the common characteristics and the differences between the French and the Greek language as regards the enunciation adverbs and the statement adverbs, before outlining, in conclusion, the possible implications for didactic and automatic translation which result from this work

Full textThe aim of this work is the description of the mode of participation of the temporal constructions in French to the linguistic representation of Time. These constructions are expressed either in their simple or compound forms -the traditional "adverbs" and "adverbial expressions"- or in the form of constructed units, traditionally described as "circonstantial complements". The first chapter presents a critical analysis of the usual notion of adverb, an analysis that leads to a classification fo the adverbs. First to the according to the criterium of the relation that they have with their context, whether from a linguistic point of view or other, and second, according to the types of their "incident point". Full textIn this study, we analyze verb combinations formed by placing an adjective to the right of a verb (such as "to eat organic" or "to buy French"). Placed in this position, the adjective is incidental to the verb from a syntactical point of view. However, as a defining element, it requires supporting elements, which are systematically absent from the statement. The absence of these semantical supports causes the adjective to be grammatically invariable, and for that reason, we speak of "invariable" adjectives. It can be maintained that, in this syntactical environment, an adjective finds itself in the place of another linguistic structure of which it is the prototypical function and with which it appears to be in competition: the adverb. It appears that, in this syntactical contest, an invariable adjective bears upon several elements. In certain cases, it can be a matter of elements belonging to the argumental structure of the verb, such as the unexpressed object. In other cases, it can involve elements that do not necessarily belong to the argumental structure (as in the combination "to bike + useful"). In this study, we postulate that it can thus be a complement describing the manner

Full textThe study has for object a semantic analysis of the French word part. Often abandoned by the linguistic analyses for the benefit of partie, this thesis aims to determine and to explain the specificities of part to clarify its place in the paradigm of the partitifs nouns. Part is indeed a key figure, in the expression of the partition, but not only. Part also finds its originality in the links that it maintains with, for example, the question of the quantification. The examination of some set expressions (de part et d'autre, de toutes parts, de part en part, autre part) shows besides strong affinities with the notion of space, inheritance of a former spatial meaning. The richness of part also expresses himself through the textual organizer d'une part … d'autre part that we examine under the angle of the semantic part-whole relation

Full textThis study is based on a distributional classification of those elements commonly known as prepositions, conjunctions, adverbs and uses an analytical model called the pronominal approach (1). This approach hypothesizes a general syntactic construction. Distributionnal analysis demonstrates a need of distinguish between an "external systax" and an "internal syntax" of those elements called particles. The external syntax shows great similarity to the analysis of "verbs constructions" as defined in the pronomical approach. Working with the internal syntax, certain properties rarely studied become apparent. One is rather particulary status for coordination, another is the existence of a paradigm of specific quantifiers that are characteristic of certain syntagms and finally a relationship of "reformulations" between the different constructions. This study steds new light on the set ideas about the use of prepositions-adverbs in spoken french, and supports the idea that the meaning of a term is clarified by the construction in which it is used. An exemple of this mechanism would be the particles that "express" spatio - temporal relationships. This study shows that it is the types of functionning of the particles that can be opposed, form a pair or a group rather than the particles themselves. The data is drawn from a corpus os spoken french which was compiled in aix, as well as from dictionary entry quotations, literary and journalistic texts
Park, Byeong-Heum. "Recherche sur le rôle des constructions adverbiales dans la voix passive en français moderne." Rouen, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994ROUEL192.
Full textThis thesis on the role of adverbial constructions in the passive voice in modern french is didided into two parts. In the first part, we found it relevant to determine the notion and the field of the voice, according to various grammarians, and we tried to give a definition of the voice. Then, we analyzed the passive voice according to several grammatical theories and we put forward the various related problems. We also observed some subtler nuances expressed by the passive form, the use of prepositions and some turns in the passive mode. In the second part, we defined and classified the adverbs with a special concern for those used in this study, quantity, intensity and assertion adverbs. We noticed the function of these adverbs with three types of sentences : first passive with an agent, then passive without an agent, and eventually reduced sentences, each time there were action and psychological verbs. It clearly appears that the adverbial constructions play an important part in the passivation, namely at the semantic and pragmatic level

These frames can extend their scope over several incoming sentences, unless some linguistic or typographical clues indicate their closure. In this study, we show that enunciative selon X are a sub-class of mediative (evidential) selon, and compare them not only with other uses of selon, but also with other adverbials such as d'après X, pour X and with verbal constructions of reported speech. We then describe the situations in which enunciative selon X integrate several sentences in their frame, and we review the clues most commonly involved in the closure of these frames. The study is based on the systematic analysis of an annotated corpus of excerpts from Le Monde diplomatique and quantitative indications on the different usages of selon X are taken into account. The results are formulated in a way which enables the implementation of rules in Natural Language Processing Systems

Full textThis study aims at analysing the adverbial clause throughout history from its rhetoric origins to its contemporary presentation and also through different linguistic theories. Such a presentation enables us to identify certain difficulties encountoured by this function which is characterized by diversity and lack of details and existing within the framework of different fields: (rhetoric – semantics – logic – and syntax) and of different forms (adverb – prepositional phrase – noun – phrase – past participle – present participle – gerund – subordinate clauses – participial clauses). Further, the syntactic and semantic analysis reveals that the adverbial clauses always share unstable and imprecise boundaries with other, complements. The second part of the research is devoted to the didactic study through textbooks and students of EFL production. This analysis stresses again the difficulty of teaching / learning such a notion. However, the learners intuitively feel that this notion belongs to the semantic field

Full textIntraspeaker variation takes place according to relevant situational conditions of language use, such as the spoken/written order, the framework and degree of formality of the situation, topic, tone, participants’ aims and identity issues, and context, which is co-constructed and reconstructed throughout the interaction. A distinction is made between institutional or protocol formality, practised by public speech professionals in serious, public, sometimes mediatic situations, and individual speakers’ formality, practised by all, normally within transactional frameworks. The type of bilingualism which characterises the Maltese language situation is described as relatively diglossic, from a social rather than an institutional point of view. This characterisation is based on the functional distribution of Maltese and English, and on the prestige associated with English, considered by the community and the private sector as the H variety, whilst Maltese is the H variety chosen by government institutions for protocol situations.A questionnaire delves into language use and attitudes on a societal level. Ambivalent attitudes emerge regarding regional dialects, as well as veneration of Semitic Maltese, and conflicting attitudes regarding the use of English. These results allow a better understanding of the sociolinguistic value of data obtained from a Maltese corpus. The spoken corpus is obtained thanks to eight key speakers (among which three public speech professionals), recorded in a variety of situations ranging from the formal to the informal. The written corpus is divided into informal (emails, chat) and formal (articles, literary prose, administration texts) sections. The corpus shows that variation takes place in Malta through register shifts and code-switching, thus covering variation patterns associated with both monolingual and bilingual situations. A study of adverb and conjunction distribution in Maltese confirms their susceptibility to formality, channel and genre. Clause junction and dislocation also vary according to style. Code-switching appears motivated by a will to teach children English and, for adults, by the prestige and the connotations of education associated with this language. The language situation in France is known for the significant difference between standard and non-standard forms; its causes are mentioned. In the Maltese context, variation inherent to Maltese and the possibility to resort to code-switching also provide a wide margin of variation possibilities. The standardisation process in the two situations diverges on several levels; language attitudes converge through an idea of language purity. Language areas susceptible to variation are analyzed, and it is proposed that variation is mostly tolerated in Maltese at the syntactic level. Stylistic variation dominates the non-diglossic French context; a hypothesis is proposed that social variation dominates the Maltese context

Full textIf the nominal groups when not used in an adverb comply to general rules of relative sentence derivation, when being subject, object or indirect object, somes adverbs exhibit specific limitations when compared to usual nominal groups ; these limitations affect the relationship between the article and the modifier. These restrictions which seldom occur with subjects or objects appear in some sentences with a support verb. Following z. S. Harris 1976 and m. Gross 1990 assumption, stating that the adverb is a predicate of some underlying verb, we tried to reduce many adverbs to simple or minimal sentences where a prepositional form directly derived from the adverb is syntactically mandatory ; such a structure with a preposition can be linked to some support verb ant the adverb form can be derived from the predicative form when embedded in a sentence. We assumed that the relationship between article and modifier in the predicative form directly implies a corresponding relationship in the adverbial form. This assumption has be proved in most cases, and alternative explanations have been proposed in some other cases

Full textThe Syrian dialect of Tartous does not have adverbs derived from adjectives that work as adverbs of manner, like in French. On the other hand, both languages use two similar ways of expressing condition ; the first one is construct introduced by thepreposition ‘with’ (‘avec’ in French, ‘bi’ in Syrian). The second way is the cognate object, or what is known in Syrian as ‘absolute effect’.With the differences between the two language systems in mind, we can assume that even if we have similar ways of expressing manner, yet they are controlled by different grammatical and semantic rules.Comparing the two languages allows us to understand the method of expressing manner in each language, and then identify the semantic and grammatical distinctions between the adverbs of manner in the two languages

Full textAmid the variety of francophone literatures and Vietnamese literatures, Vietnamese francophone literature – always in quest for its identity – appears the best, as it becomes the sharing spot for ideologies, thought attitudes of mind, then it allows inmost feelings to pour out as well as noble longings for human contacts and personal or national pride. But first of all, the Vietnamese francophone literature promotes the spreading of French, the very tongue Vietnamese authors adopt as the best language to show their literary creativity. Examining the order of words throughout seven novels of three writers: Cung Giu Nguyen, Pham Duy Khiem and Pham Van Ky, allows us to explore closely the connection between literary creativity and the structure of French language. To be more precise, the purpose of this essay is to examine the implementation of the “grammatical norm” constrained and compelled by the rules of the language, and to emphasize the particular structures stand out, as they result from the stylistic choice of the novelists. From that basic approach we want to enlarge our investigations to the field of textual linguistics or grammar of text, as well as the field of prose poetics. This questioning is mainly corroborated by the close examination of the position of three principal components: subject, complements and adverbs, and by the taking into account of their positional function in the textual and literary production

Full textThis thesis is an attempt to describe the system and syntactic status of the adverbs in cantonese besides we have adopted a comparative approach : cantonese vs mandarin. In the first chapter we have tried to make a clear distinction between the adverbs and other elements having apparently similar syntactic or syntagmatic characteristics. In so doing, we have given a clear definition of the adverb. The second chapter is devoted to the general characteristics of the cantonese adverbs. In order to come to a correct classification of this part of the speech, we have adopted distributional criteria, while taking into account semantic criteria and the nature of the predicate. The third part of this work gives en detail the syntactic and semantic characteristics of each distributional group. We have put the emphasis on the postverbal adverbs, very specific of the cantonese language and with no equivalent in mandarin chinese. We have tried to give an explanation concerning the origin of this special type of adverbs. This research work allows us to conclude that the cantonese advervbs, similer to adverbs in toher language, is a set of words with specific and yet heterogeneous traits, having various characteristics, multiple distributions, high frequency, polysemantic traits

Full textThis thesis describes sixteenth-century language, based on a corpus of French texts, from an adverbial perspective. The establishment of a textual corpus organized in sentences, according to syntax and to punctuation required interrogating the sentence, the punctuation and the history of the texts. The question of the adverbs was chosen as the criteria for a semantic, morphologic, and syntactic perspective. A survey of adverbial occurrences led to the hypothesis that adverbality, in the sentence, during the sixteenth century, could function, sometimes simultaneously, on different levels of syntactic hierarchy, levels that likewise present possibilities for adverbality, which was confirmed by a process of circumscription of an adverbial territory within the sentence. The adverbial occurrences taken from the corpus showed quite variable morphology. These many possibilities gave rise to a first stage of questioning that arose from the question of where in the syntactical hierarchy these occurrences were found. Although the reasons underpinning this analysis seemed dependent upon each adverbial occurrence, they proved in fact to be equally and logically present from one occurrence to another and from one morphology to another. This led us to think that a common denominator might be necessary for the entirety of adverbial occurrences. We propose a reconceptualization of these perspectives as logically connected, however disparate the results are as they appear in the language of the sixteenth-century. This leaves us with a reason to continue searching for a common denominator for the adverb and to conceive a logical union that constructs a total entity of adverbial occurrences

Full textThis thesis stems from a project aimed at exploring marginal quantifying expressions. Whereas there is an abundant literature on quantifying determiners, for instance, the study of quantifying/intensifying adverbial phrases is not very advanced yet. This thesis thus focuses on a quantifying adverbial phrase on the margins of quantification research: jusqu’à un certain point (to a certain extend/up to a certain point). The analysis is based on a written corpus using different sources. Part one offers three studies of the adverbial phrase’s constituents, the preposition jusque, the determiner un certain and the noun point. Part two introduces an overview of the current uses of jusqu’à un certain point, shows the adverbial phrase’s synchronic fixation and describes its evolution since its first appearance in Frantext in 1671. Six contemporary uses can be distinguished: endophrastic jusqu’à un certain point functions as an adverb of completion, degree or “limit”. Exophrastic jusqu’à un certain point functions as a modal, a hedge (shield or approximator). There are hybrid cases activating quantitative and modal values in parallel. Finally, the adverbial phrase can function as an argumentative pivot with properties of a modalisateur déréalisant of Ducrot. Part three examines the adverbial status of jusqu’à un certain point, its interaction with different predicate types, the role played by its syntactical position, its conceptualization within a cognitive semantic perspective and its role as a discourse operator participating in the articulation of argumentation

Full textFar from the oecumenical celebration and the negritudian idealization of pre-colonial africa on the one hand, and the worship of formal franch language made from writers of his generation on the other hand, kourouma elaborates a new and deliberately inconoclastic and novelistic aesthetics in his novels. Half-way between oral tradition and classical novel writing, kouroumian aesthetics is embeded in an enunciative problematic. If the ultimate goal of this study is the expression of high degree, our approch is double-sided : showing the influence of oral tradition on the novelist's writing through his excessive use of hyperbole in the narration ; showing, by the description of linguistic expressiveness mechanism, in general, how the essential concern of the quest for a discursive credibility is solved. Among other subjects, we deal here with the frame of kouroumian aesthetics, that is, the problem of linguistic interferences and peculiarities, the problem of synonyms, polysemy and lexical creation. Un other words, without pretending to be exhaustive, this linguistic and semantic study intends to answer the questions of expressive and affective syntax, of grammar and, above all, of psychological and socio-cultural conditions of enunciation

Full textIn this thesis, all of which is based upon the principles of the theory called the psychomechanics of language, the author gives a definition of the adverb-class by relating it to the other parts of speech and he analyses some of the consequences of that definition at the morpho-semantic level. Besides, he contends that the definition given conditions the syntax of the adverb. The syntactic study is envisaged from a genetic angle, its main criterion being the successive stages during which the sentence constituents appear when an act of enunciation is brought into operation. This study leads up to a typology of adverbial incidences in English

Full textThe dissertation develops the analysis of a collection of additive adverbs in the theoretical framework set by the semantic notion of event repetition. Among the manifestations of verbal plurality, event repetition can be defined by the presence of an order between the elements of the plural set and by the presuppositional status of the antecedent(s). Through the descriptive analysis of repetitive adverbs in three Romance languages (Italian, French, Romanian) and in Mandarin Chinese, we distinguish three main types of event repetition, which surface as iterative reading (Jean mange de nouveau chez nous), continuative reading (Jean mange encore son sandwich) and incremental reading (Jean mange encore un sandwich). It is shown that these distinctions depend mainly on the aspectual properties of the predicate and of the sentence, and can be paired with distinct structural positions of the adverbs at the syntactic interface. The notion of repetition is then applied to the analysis of specific cases. Through the analysis of Mandarin adverb hái, we suggest a repetitive account of aspectual\ continuative adverbs in comparative sentences (Jean est encore plus grand que Paul\ Zhāngsān bi ̌Lisi hái gāo), basing our assumptions on the strong structural analogies between the two ordered domains of Time and Degree. We also give a semantic account of the incremental adverb zài in mandarin, showing that the distributional restrictions of the adverb and the interprétative differences in its presuppositional content can be explained by considering the aspectual properties of the predicate and the temporal reference of the sentence

Full textThis study attempts to establish a triple specificity: specificity of adverb as a part of speech, specificity, inside the adverbial class, of time adverb, and specificity, among the latter, of several adverbial groups. To begin with, adverbs differ from adverbial complements by a rather «shorter analysis» ; and they may, too, be distinguished from adjectives by their more diffuse way of modifying a group of words. Therefore, we are brought to define the adverb by this peculiar way of modification, called "adjunction". Then, time adverbs are conspicuous inside the adverbial class by being the only ones who complete with their semantic content information usually given by verbal morphology. But there are several kinds of associations between verb and adverb: for instance, we must emphasize the opposition between adverbs implying a reference date, who are tightly connected with the temporal behavior of the verb - and may consequently have preferences or incompatibilities with verbal tenses - and adverbs no such references, that are used, therefore, more independently of the verbal tenses

Full textThe treatise "On adverbs" is one of the few extant texts from Apollonius Dyscolus, a Greek grammarian of Alexandria (mid-second century AD), who considerably influenced the whole of the later grammatical tradition. Since R. Schneider’s "Grammatici Graeci" (1878), no edition of this treatise as a whole has ever been provided, and no complete translation into any modern language has ever been given. This dissertation provides a new critical edition of the treatise, with a first French translation and a lemmatic commentary. "On adverbs" is totally in keeping with the main project of the Greek grammarian, that consists in defining the underlying rules that govern the regularities of language, understood as a rational system. Having clearly defined the adverb, at the beginning of the treatise, as the predicate of the verb, Apollonius establishes a rigorous typology and strives to integrate in this systematic frame every apparent contradicting linguistic phenomenon

Full textThe word order appears to be the major problem in the phenomenon of the adverbial modification in chinese. The crucial distinction between the two types of adverbial elements, i. E. Adverbial and complement, is their pre- and postverbal position. In addition, they can be distinguished by their semantic properties, their scopes and their hierarchy levels. The adverbial sequence depends on the difference of scope. The locative which takes the initial position of the existential sentences functions as a topic. The adverbial propositions such as the causals and the conditionals, though their distribution is similar, do not have the same syntactic structure. The restrictive distribution of the adverbial elements in the cleft sentences can be accounted of by their scope as well as the stative nature of the predicates that they associate with

Full textThis study is an investigation into the distribution in usage of short english morphemes making up the body of prepositions and/or adverbial particles. The author has selected 15 forms among the most versatile, as regards their lexical as well as their syntactic potentiality. They are : at, in, on, off, up, down, by, over, through, across, to, from, out, away and about. This work is conducted in the light of cognitive concepts - among which that of family resemblances. - with a view to bringing out, half-way between predictiveness and convention, some pattern of semantic coherence extending over the whole set of their occurrences. The linguistic analyses feed on the theoretic works of antoine culioli and ronald langacker. Last but not least, the contrastive method is used throughout. All the examples are studied in context, in comparison with their available translation into french. The interlingual perspective has a dual advantage : it throws light on the intralingual workings, while contributing its piece to research in translation. This particular field appears all the more challenging as these "minor parts of english speech" sound eminently idiomatic to the french ear. Definitely cutting across categories, the author's work consists in shadowing each morpheme thanks to conceptual metaphor, from a prototypical prepositional value - a topological asymmetric relation between two elements - over to its temporal and more abstract occurrences, down to some non-referential adverbial values, thus replacing the morpheme into a topology of grammatical space. Through successive shifts along a semantic, lexical and syntactic continuum, the study ends with and opens up onto the issue of the aspectual determination of the verb by the particle, and lays the bases for a parallelism with another class of iconic units, namely affixes. Those points are presented as matter for prospective research

Full textThe traditional classification of parts of speech still in use in grammatical studies has proved its inadequacy, particularly in the adverbial field. The latter cannot be properly distinguished from the other grammatical classes merely on the basis of classical definitions: a great deal of diferent parts of speech function as adverbs. The identification and an objective analysis of the adverbial class cannot be undertaken satisfactorily only if the function of its elements are taken into consideration. This procedure has been particularly important in the case of the study of a dialect whose structure differs from that of indo-european languages and which, in addition, has remained spoken. The approach which has consisted in the observation and analysis of the adverbial constructions in the context of the sentence, as well as in the system of the language as a whole, has proved the existence of an adverbial class in arabic, and at the same time the characteristics and the role of its components

Full textThe present study bears on the Latin adverbs formed on the themes of lexical (i. E. Impossible to use as a predicate) adjectives. Through the examination of a homogeneous group of adverbs, it aims to describe the functioning of the adverbial form and to give a definition of the adverb. First, the several morphological types of adverbs will be studied, as well as the limits of the adverbial productivity and their causes. Then a new classification of adverbs is proposed, based on the one hand on the syntactic level of use (sentence adverbs vs. Adjuncts), on the other hand on the various functions performed by these adverbs (determination, qualification, quantification, degree and localisation). Lastly, in this study it will be endeavoured to find criteria by which a limit can be found between adverbs and prepositions, adverbs and substantives, and adverbs and adjectives. In the first case, the possibility to govern a complement is not a satisfactory distinguishing criterion because some adverbs admit a complement and are therefore neither intransitive nor dispensable; in the second case, the competition between adverbs and prepositional phrases does not imply that adverbs be a means to shorten such phrases, as adverbs do not always have such equivalents and may have a different and complementary meaning compared to the prepositional phrases; the third comparison allows to show that the specificity of adverbs is not only their incompatibility with substantives but concerns more generally the function of the modified constituent. This functional characteristic must be associated with a morphological feature, invariability, to yield a complete definition of the adverb

Full textThis research brings to light the mechanisms of adverbial subordination, as illustrated in contemporary Chinese. It presents firstly a global view of the syntactic structure in the complex sentence with adverbial clauses in Chinese. It is shown that the complex sentence is constructed in the same way as the simple sentence. The adverbial clause behaves exactly like a non-clausal adverbial in a simple sentence. The different linear positions of adverbial clauses result from their different hierarchical levels. The adverbial clause is also constructed like a simple sentence. There is no specific rule governing the position of the constituents within the adverbial clause. The distribution of the subordinator depends on its nature, adverbial or prepositional. Following these investigations, the adverbial clauses in Chinese are divided into two main categories, according to the different syntactic properties manifested through their hierarchical level, their internal structure and the nature of their subordinator. We then embark on a series of detailed analysis on sentences that are concessive, final and consequential; we uncover their syntactic and semantic properties
