Full textThe purpose of this study is to examine the phonetic features in the French spoken in the Magdalena Islands from a comparative point of view and to analyse the inter- (and intra-) individual variation in order to assign a place to this dialect in the variational space of Canadian French. Though the Magdalena Islands belong to the Province of Quebec from political point of view, the French-speaking section of the population shows a strong identification with its Acadian origins. It affirms its Acadian character in a diversified linguistic lanscape ans is conscious of belonging to a "distinct society" which differentiates itself from the Quebecois as well as from Anglophone Canadians. The analysis is based on an entirely digitalized corpus of 12 hours of semi-guided interviews. The bringing together of phonetic features and mophological features makes it possible to note that the erosion of the Acadian features does not occur at the same rate for all the phenomena sudied. A two-tiered evolution that we observed in the dialect of the Magdalena Islands shows an inherent tension that characterizes the French spoken in this area. In order to treat in all its complexity the dynamics induced by the pressure of the endogenous norms on one side and the loss of Acadian features under the influence of the Quebecois institutional apparatus on the other, we have chosen a multidimensional approach integrating the assets of variationist linguistics and contemporary research in cognitive linguistics (the relationship between perception and production, the role of frequency)

Full textHaving as objective to analyse the phonetic interferences from the chinese student's native language in his acquisition of the french pronunciation, we started by a contrast study about french and chinese phonological systems (the chinese here means putonghua, known as chinese national language and also named mandarin in the western world). We put in evidence the similarities and the differences between these two languages in phonology and prosody. A comparative study has been done in combination, distribution and using frequency of the vocal and consonant phonemes in the two languages. We emphasized on the tones which play a distinctive role in chinese and which also cause a lot of problems in the perception and the acquisition of the french prosody. The study on different phonic elements allowed us to determine the phonetic interferences from the chinese language and to establish an anticipatory error system. Finally, we tried to propose corrective methods, catering for chinese students. We hope that our study could help the teacher and the chinese learner to have a pre-vision of phonetic errors in learning or teaching french, to avoid and correct them in a relatively effective manner

Full textAn experimental study of french prosody has been carried out. Two corpuses ( short portion of spontaneous speech and a series of 400 read sentences ) have been analysed both acoustically and perceptually. The macro-temporal organization of reiterant sentences has been studied. A tentative model of the rhytm of french is presented. This model consists of an hierarchical organization of rhythm and a series of phonotactic and linguistic rules. Its accounts for distribution of primary and secondary accents : - primary accents are located at the end of a word or group of words. - secondary accents are located on the of words, on the penultimate syllable of a word or on the final syllable of a non-final morpheme in a polymorphemic word (melo dramatisation). This model is finally applied to a text-to-speech synthesis system (lpc diphones)

Full textThe purpose of this work is the elaboration of a rule-based module for a text-to-speech synthesizer for french. Speech synthesis has to deal with one of the main aspects of speech : speech is a continuum that is usually divided into units. The nature and complexity of these units are different depending on the level of description we work at. The input of the segmental module is a stream of phonetic units. When in isolation, the phonetic unit is instanciated in the vocal tract by a phonetic gesture, that is the canonical form. The acoustical result is a "target" with specific spectral values. In continuous speech, there is a temporal overlap in the succession of gestures which instanciate the segments. At the acoustic level, the gesturalinteraction inducts spectral modifications which operate on the target values. The elaboration of the module starts with the analysis of a large natural speech data base from a single speaker. First, the target values are extracted from the data base, for all the phonemes. They characterize the speaker. The coarticulation phenomena are then modeled by bontext-sensitive rules, at the acoustic level. This study is concerned by some major aspects of speech synthesis by rules. For example : the validity of a corpus with constraints ; the search for an interface between different levels of description ; the use of acoustic features for writing rules ; the intelligibility and quality of the synthesis obtained. This study has been carried out within the polyglot, esprit project 1024 "a multilingual text-tospeech and speech-to-text system. The aim of polyglot was to build up a multilingual text-to-speech system for six european languages

Full textThe subject of this thesis is the phonologic diachronic analysis of factors in play in the diphthongization of vowels in French and in Castilian in the frame of declarative phonology. The combinations among vowels, semivowels and semiconsonantals are the essential of our work. The axis of this thesis is the three position rythmic pattern (Angoujard, 1997) and construing of sonorous segments and elements (Kaye, Lowenstamm & Vergnaud, 1985). Each segment analysed has been described in the shape of constraints and integrated in a strict aproach by principles and parameters. The thesis consists in two clearly differenciated parts: in the first we introduce several general aspects and sometimes innovatives in the field of diachronic phonology and in the second we have applied it to the study of diphthongization

Full textA general knowledge of communication requires at the same time an appropriate choice of lexical and syntaxic elements and a extensive understanding of utterances sound and shapes. So, phonetic correction must not be neglected from the very beginning of the learning of a foreign language. Students learning French are usually confronted with a certain amount of problems partially generated by the phonologic system. .
