En Europe, la professionnalisation des armées a entraîné la démilitarisation de nombreux espaces urbains. Avec la réduction et le redéploiement des forces armées, les métropoles militaires ont dû renoncer au modèle de la ville de garnison et recycler l’héritage militaire aliéné, ce dernier étant à la fois accepté, contraint et/ou subi. Ainsi, pour la ville de Metz (France), la démilitarisation a laissé en héritage d’importantes structures témoins de l’hyper-militarisation de la ville. La rétrocession des infrastructures militaires à la ville a permis de construire des dynamiques patrimoniales et urbanistiques. En cela il s’agit d’une transformation et d’une transition. Elles sont les produits d’une coévolution entre une gouvernance institutionnelle et multiscalaire et une appropriation privée. Cette association s’était traduite par un projet inabouti de classement UNESCO destinée à faciliter la gestion des héritages du complexe militaro-urbain dans un contexte de décroissance urbaine. In Europe, the professionalization of armies has led to the demilitarization of many urban spaces. With the reduction and redeployment of the armed forces, military metropolises have had to abandon the garrison city model and recycle the alienated military legacy, the latter being at the same time accepted, coerced and/or suffered. Thus, for the city of Metz (France), demilitarization has left a legacy of important structures that bear witness to the hyper-militarization of the city. The retrocession of military infrastructure to the city has made it possible to build heritage and urban planning dynamics. In this sense, it is a question of transformation and transition. They are the products of a co-evolution between institutional and multiscalar governance and private ownership. This association resulted in a UNESCO classification project designed to facilitate the management of the legacies of the military-urban complex in a context of urban shrinking.

Ce travail aborde l'histoire des anciens combattants marocains de l'armée française a l 'époque. Coloniale. La constitution des premières formations marocaines d' « indigènes» mise en place par l’armée française coïncide avec la genèse du protectorat français au Maroc. Cette expérience, tentée dans la région des Chaouïa, a donné naissance, dans le courant du dernier trimestre de 1908, a six goums mixtes marocains distincts. Toutefois, la construction des formations militaires « indigènes» n'allait prendre d'ampleur au Maroc qu'au lendemain de la conclusion du traite de protectorat en 1912. Année à partir de laquelle les unités formées sont, sans cesse, mises a l'avant garde de l'action militaire coloniale. De plus, leur contribution dans les deux conflits mondiaux au service de la France, a été, a chaque fois, déterminante. Le dernier théâtre d'opérations ou ces troupes sont utilisées est l'Indochine voir pour certaines l'Algérie voisine. Cette contribution militaire des combattants marocains a, par ailleurs, amené la question de leur statut juridique au sein de l'armée française. Avec l'indépendance du Maroc en 1956, les anciens' combattants marocains continuent de percevoir une pension de l’Etat français au titre de leur parcours militaire. Pour des raisons purement économiques, les pensions militaires, versées a tous les anciens combattants originaires des pays de 1 'ex-empire colonial français, sont « cristallisées» en 1959. Dorénavant ces pensions ne connaîtront plus aucune augmentation pour suivre les fluctuations inflationnistes contrairement a celles versées a leurs frères d'armes français.

Depuis plus d’une dizaine d’année, l’on assiste à une résurgence de la mémoire historique en Espagne. Qu’il s’agisse des contemporains ou de leurs héritiers, la mémoire des vaincus de la Guerre Civile, autrefois passée sous silence, est devenue incontournable aussi bien sur le plan historiographique que culturel et même politique (loi dite de « mémoire historique »). Les nombreux succès éditoriaux et cinématographiques relatifs à cette période douloureuse ont contribué à la diffusion d’épisodes méconnus et à la réappropriation d’un passé qui n’avait pas toujours été transmis aux générations successives. Toutefois, l’activisme des uns ne fait pas l’unanimité. Entre ceux qui ne souhaitent pas rouvrir les blessures du passé au nom d’une concorde nationale difficilement obtenue, et ceux qui se sentent mis en accusation par un « triomphe des vaincus » qui tend à ne présenter le conflit civil que sous l’angle de la lutte des « bons » contre les « méchants », l’on a pu observer une crispation partisane des débats au détriment de la science historique. La question mémorielle a atteint de telles proportions que certains commentateurs se sont demandés si la Guerre Civile était ou non terminée. Quoique l’évolution de l’historiographie soit indéniable depuis 1931, elle ne saurait s’expliquer entièrement par la lutte partisane des héritiers des deux camps. En effet, il nous faut nous intéresser également à des causes plus profondes qui en sont à l’origine. Si le cas espagnol s’inscrit dans un contexte européen d’irruption de la mémoire dans l’histoire, il s’explique aussi par des raisons propres qui touchent bien d’autres domaines<br>Over the past decade, the question of Spanish historical memory has been debated a lot. Whereas the memory of the Spanish Civil War’s defeated had been kept silenced for years, nowadays, the story of direct witnesses – often told by themselves or their heirs – has become inevitable from a historical, cultural and political point of view (see the “historical memory” Act). Many best-selling books and box-office hit films dealing with this painful historical period have contributed to generalise some neglected events which had not always been properly transmitted to the younger generations. However, the memorial activism of various individuals is not unanimously accepted. Indeed, some people consider that such a revival of a painful past might pose a threat to a national harmony which was not easy to obtain. Others, belonging to the national fraction, feel directly accused by the late “triumph” of yesterday’s defeated. The frequent parallel drawn between the Civil War and a would-be fight of the “goods” against the “evils”, has fuelled a partisan debate at the expense of historical truth. The debate on historical memory has become so serious that some analysts do wonder if the Civil War is over or not. The evolution of historiography since 1931 is real, but it should not be explained exclusively by the biased opposition of the heirs of both camps. In fact, we have to take into account deeper reasons at the roots of the problem. The Spanish case cannot be dissociated from a European context, even if it has to be explained by its own particular reasons which affect many other knowledge domains

En 1823, l’intervention militaire de la France, agissant au nom de la Sainte-Alliance, met fin au régime constitutionnel et rétablit sur le trône Ferdinand VII. Cette nouvelle Guerre d’Espagne n’est pas sans susciter de fortes inquiétudes même chez ses plus fervents partisans : dix ans seulement après la désastreuse aventure napoléonienne dans la Péninsule, comment ces Espagnols qui s’étaient levés d’un commun accord contre l’Empereur réagiront-ils ? La haine des Français les poussera-t-elle à prendre de nouveau les armes et à mener cette terrible guérilla ayant fait tant de ravages dans les rangs français ? Pendant que le duc d’Angoulême progressera en Espagne, les journaux royalistes ne tariront pas d’éloges sur ces Français venus libérer leur roi et, leur attribuant toutes les qualités militaires et morales, chantent à l’envi l’entente plus que cordiale qui s’instaure immédiatement entre les sujets de Ferdinand VII et les soldats de Louis XVIII. Au-delà du discours reflété dans les déclarations officielles et la presse, où se situe la réalité ? Les Français exécrés lors du conflit antérieur ont-ils été véritablement accueillis en héros par les Espagnols? Les réactions de la Régence aux dispositions promulguées à Andujar par le duc d’Angoulême laissent deviner que l’entente entre les partisans de Ferdinand VII et le haut commandement français n’a sans doute pas été aussi cordiale qu’on a bien voulu le proclamer. Quant à la fraternisation des Espagnols avec les troupes françaises, a-t-elle été aussi effective qu’on l’a laissé entendre? C’est à toutes ces questions, parfois soulevées, mais jamais véritablement traitées par les historiens que cette thèse prétend répondre<br>In 1823, the military intervention of France, acting in the name of the Holy Alliance, put an end to the constitutional regime and re-established Ferdinand VII on the throne. From the outset, this new Spanish War was not without its strongest supporters : only ten years after Napoleon's disastrous adventure in the Peninsula, how would the Spaniards, who had risen up in unison against the Emperor, react? Would their Anti-French sentiment drive them to take up arms again and wage the terrible guerrilla warfare that had wreaked such havoc on the French ranks? While the Duke of Angouleme was making progress in Spain, the royalist newspapers were full of praise for these Frenchmen who had come to liberate their king and, attributing all the military and moral qualities to them, sang a more than cordial understanding that was immediately established between the subjects of Ferdinand VII and the soldiers of Louis XVIII. Beyond the rhetoric reflected in official statements and the press, what was the reality? Were the French, who had been hated in the previous conflict, really welcomed as heroes by the Spaniards? The reaction from the Regency to the provisions promulgated at Andujar by the Duke of Angouleme, suggests that the understanding between the supporters of Ferdinand VII and the French high command was probably not as cordial as it was made out to be. As for the fraternisation of the Spaniards with the French troops, was it as effective as it has been suggested? It is to all these questions, sometimes raised but never really treated by historians, that this thesis aims to answer

L’esercito italiano e la conquista della Catalogna (1808-1811) Uno studio di Military Effectiveness nell’Europa napoleonica Settori scientifico-disciplinari SPS/03 – M-STO/02 La ricerca ha lo scopo di ricostruire e valutare l’effettività militare dell’esercito italiano al servizio di Napoleone I. In primo luogo attraverso un’analisi statistica e strategica della costruzione, e del successivo impiego, dell’istituzione militare del Regno d’Italia durante gli anni della sua esistenza (1805-14); successivamente, è stato scelto un caso di studi particolarmente significativo, come la campagna di Catalogna (1808-11, nel contesto della guerra di Indipendenza spagnola), per poter valutare il contributo operazionale e tattico dei corpi inviati dal governo di Milano e la loro integrazione con l’apparato militare complessivo del Primo Impero. La tesi ha voluto rispondere alla mancanza di studi sul comportamento in guerra dell’esercito italiano e, allo stesso tempo, introdurre nella storiografia militare italiana la metodologia di studi, d’origine anglosassone e ormai di tradizione trentennale, di Military Effectiveness. La ricerca si è primariamente basata, oltre che sulla copiosa memorialistica a stampa italiana e francese, sulla documentazione d’archivio della Secrétairerie d’état impériale (Archives Nationales di Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, Parigi), del Ministère de la Guerre francese (Service historique de la Défence, di Vincennes, Parigi) e del Ministero della Guerra del Regno d’Italia (Archivio di Stato di Milano). Dal punto di vista dei risultati è stato possibile verificare come l’esercito italiano abbia rappresentato, per Bonaparte, uno strumento duttile e di facile impiego, pur in un contesto di sostanziale marginalità numerica complessiva di fronte alle altre (e cospicue) forze messe in campo da parte dell’Impero e dei suoi altri Stati satellite e alleati. Per quanto riguarda la campagna di conquista della Catalogna è stato invece possibile appurare il fondamentale contributo dato dal contingente italiano, sotto i punti di vista operazionale e tattico, per la buona riuscita dell’invasione; questo primariamente grazie alle elevate caratteristiche generali mostrate dallo stesso, ma anche per peculiarità disciplinari e organizzative che resero i corpi italiani adatti a operazioni particolarmente aggressive.<br>The Italian Army and the Conquest of Catalonia (1808-1811) A Study of Military Effectiveness in Napoleonic Europe Academic Fields and Disciplines SPS/03 – M-STO/02 The research has the purpose of reconstruct and evaluate the military effectiveness of the Italian Army existed under the reign of Napoleon I. Firstly through a statistic and strategic analysis of the development, and the following deployment, of the military institution of the Kingdom of Italy in the years of its existence (1805-14). Afterwards, a particularly significant case study was chosen, as the campaign of Catalonia (1808-11, in the context of the Peninsular War), in order to assess the operational and tactical contribution of the regiments sent by the Government of Milan and their integration in the overall military apparatus of the First Empire. The thesis wanted to respond to the lack of studies on the Italian army’s behavior in war and, at the same time, to introduce the methodology of the Military Effectiveness Studies (of British and American origin and, by now, enriched by a thirty-year old tradition) in the Italian historiography. The research is primarily based, besides the numerous memoirs of the Italian and French veterans, on the archive documentation of the Secrétairerie d’état impériale (Archives Nationales of Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, Paris), of the French Ministère de la Guerre (Service historique de la Défence, of Vincennes, Paris) and of the Italian Ministero della Guerra (Archivio di Stato di Milano). About the results, it has been verified how the Italian army has become a flexible and suitable instrument for Bonaparte, albeit in a context of substantial overall numerical marginality in comparison to the heterogeneous forces available to the Empire and its others satellites and allied states. Regarding the campaign of Catalonia, instead, it was possible to ascertain the fundamental contribution of the Italian regiments, in an operational and tactical perspective, for the success of the invasion. This was primarily due to the excellent general characteristics shown by the expeditionary force, but also to disciplinary and organizational peculiarities that have made the Italian corps suitable for particularly aggressive operations.
