Abstract Many economists have analyzed the efficiency of a volunteered army relative to a conscripted army. However, they have rarely studied the working of real-world alternative, market-based, military institutions where exemptions from military service are traded among the citizens. This paper fills this gap by studying the rise and fall of the Remplacement Militaire in the eighteenth and the nineteenth century France. This system endured for more than three quarters of a century until the French government progressively moved toward universal conscription after 1872. At times of military e

In order to separate myth from reality and restore, as far as possible, an accurate picture of those tragic events, the authors of the monograph under review turn to a wide array of sources — ranging from memoirs of direct participants to archival documents from various countries. They also thoroughly examined the works of both classic and contemporary researches on the military and political history of Franc

As a professor of French Studies, I had often wished to develop a course in which students could mount a play in French. Its pedagogical value seemed obvious: performing in a foreign language and managing a theatrical production could help students increase their knowledge of French society while improving pronunciation and vocabulary. However, my lack of expertise in the theory and practice of theater stymied me. I had also often longed to teach a course about the Dreyfus affair. Throughout its centuries-old history, France has taken part in many wars. Its expansion was especially active in the XVII-XIX centuries. In the modern era, namely during the reign of King Louis XIV (1643-1715), France pursued an aggressive foreign policy, trying to annex not only the territories of neighboring states, but also to extend its influence throughout Europe. The consequence was the need to improve the system of state awards for the Royal Army officer corps. The cavalry were still beautifully and often impractically clad, and were always seeking the decisive charge, on their unfed and often sickly mounts. Jacques-Antoine-Hippolyte, comte de Guibert (1743-1790) dedicated his life and career to creating a new doctrine for the French army. Little about this doctrine was revolutionary. Indeed, Guibert openly decried the anarchy of popular participation in government and looked askance at the early days of the Revolution. Rather, Guibert’s doctrine marked the culmination of an evolutionary process that commenced decades before his time and reached fruition in the Réglement of 1791, which remained in force until the 1830s. AbstractIn 2022, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine came as a shock to European countries, who unanimously condemned it as a war of aggression and acted to bolster Ukraine’s defense. Europeans have different understandings of the endgame in Ukraine and the risk of escalation. Three of the European Union’s (EU) key member states, Germany, France, and Poland, have taken varied approaches to this question. This diversity is reflected in the deliverance of military support to Ukraine and the history of the country's relations with Russia. Understanding these divergences will play an essential role in determining the war's outcome and shaping the future of European security.
