Abstract:
This paper explores the nature and chronology of La Tène and early Roman unenclosed agglomerations in central-eastern France. It has been prompted by the discovery of a c. 115 ha La Tène D2b/Augustan (c. 50 BC to AD 15) site close to Bibracte in the Morvan, located around the source of the River Yonne. This complex provides a new perspective on the chronology and role of Late La Tène and early Roman unenclosed settlements, adding further complexity to the story of the development of Late La Tène oppida. It indicates that these ‘agglomerations’ followed remarkably varied chronological trajectories, raising important issues concerning the nature of landscape and social change at the end of the Iron Age.

Abstract:
The first issue of Cotteau's monograph on the post-Eocene echinoids of France, destined to be his final contribution to Paléontologie française, had reached proof stage when he died in 1894. A limited number of copies of this first part, which included twelve plates, was printed for private circulation. Subsequently the section of the genus Spatangus was published in Isère as a posthumous journal article with the same twelve plates. Plate 13, of Spatangus heinzi Gauthier, whilst called for in the text, was not included. This paper presents the missing plate 13 which was prepared separately in the Yonne and never previously published; it identifies errors which were not corrected in the published version, and differences between Cotteau's original proof version and that which was published. It also briefly summarises the history of the publication of the echinoid volumes of Paléontologie française and the reluctance of the publisher, George Masson, to continue its production.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractBiosynthetic calcite samples were investigated using combined synchrotron X-ray microspectroscopy mapping. These samples were prepared with bacteria isolated from the Large cave of Arcy-sur-Cure in which prehistoric figures are masked by an opaque calcite layer. The biotic or abiotic origin of this layer is the issue of the present work. As previously known, a large community of bacteria may be involved in the CaCO3 formation in caves. A mixture of calcite/vaterite was obtained from bacteria isolated from the cave. Therefore, we can offer conclusions on their calcifying capability. The rare presence of vaterite in cave environments may be treated as a marker of biotic carbonate formations. Moreover, an amorphous calcium phosphate phase was present in the form of a calcite/vaterite mixture in the biotic model samples. This mixture of phases could be used as a tracer of the biotic process of CaCO3 formation. These biotic tracer phases were not identified using the applied analytical methods in the natural samples taken from the opaque calcite layers that covered the prehistoric figures of the Large cave. In this case, based on the obtained results, the biotic calcite formation process is likely to be considered as an undetectable effect at minimum.

Abstract:
Research framework:In 1881 the French Third Republic allocated yearly pensions to nearly 25,000 elderly citizens as reparations for political oppression suffered thirty years earlier during the previous regime. To receive a pension, each former political prisoner (proscrit), their widows or children, wrote letters describing their punishment and the wider multi-generational impact of that oppression. Objectives:This article uncovers understandings shared by Republican administrators and a particular group of their staunch working-class supporters - artisans, rural laborers, and small-town shopkeepers - of the definitions of old age, expectations for life trajectories, and how gender affected both expectations and experiences.Methodology:Historical, qualitative analysis of archival documents at the French National Archives and departments of the Ain, Allier, Drôme, Hérault, Rhône, Saône-et-Loire, Vaucluse and Yonne, France. Results:Analysis demonstrates pension applicants drew upon common understandings of gender and age-based roles to strengthen their claims to pensions both as erstwhile heroes of the newly democratic regime and as members of an indigent, elderly poor worthy of government aid. Conclusions:Formerproscrits, their families and Republican administrators shared assumptions about the definition of the onset of old age as linked to gender; about expectations that elderly men would work indefinitely in old age until physically unable to do so but that the specter of elderly working women was shameful and a blot on Republican values; and about an understanding that pensions allowed a dignified old-age for both male and female applicants by undoing dangerous shifts in gender roles perceived as triggered by the political oppression decades earlier.Contribution:The article contributes to scholarship on changing European understandings of the gendered dimensions of old age in the late 19th century, just before decades of social welfare legislation.
