Abstract:
Robert De Niro and Marlon Brando are the only two actors to win an Academy Award for playing the same character: Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather series. My article examines the similarities and differences between the actors’ interpretations of the iconic Don Corleone. I draw on lessons on script interpretation they both learned from their acting teacher Stella Adler and Robert De Niro’s goal of ‘being in the present circumstances of the moment’ to examine De Niro’s translation of Brando, the script, Mario Puzo’s novel and their interpretation of Corleone’s embodiment of masculinity. Using De Niro’s scripts, documents and notes related to his research of Corleone in the Harry Ransom Center, I outline the specific steps that De Niro took to translate and reinterpret Corleone. By triangulating the three major personalities most responsible for creating the memorable role, we can separate the various author-functions of three very different creators ‐ Francis Ford Coppola, Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on the assumption that an artist’s work is a coherent whole structured by aesthetic and dramatic principles conjured up by a central figure – the author. Therefore, it aims to establish the coherence of Coppola’s work through an analysis of his films. These films appear as narratives characterized by a recurrent storyline: a protagonist transgresses the laws of a system which in turn punishes him/her. Therefore, transgression and punishment imply the existence of a collective order to which the figure of the hero is subordinated. The notion of order is central to understanding the articulation between narrative and aesthetics, as it implies the existence of a set of rules and values – cultural, moral, economic, and social – by which a community defines itself. In Coppola's films, these rules are embodied in either a power figure or a power structure. But order is also about creating the framework which permits the very existence of cinema: the various means and devices through which film manages to convey the illusion of human life. Following a first, strictly narratological part, this study is divided into three parts focusing on film analysis, and develops a reading of Coppola’s films from two inseparable perspectives: the fiction narrative and the artistry which generates it. Such an approach imbues the figure of the hero fighting an alienating world with a meaning that, far from altering its mythical quality, reinscribes it within a properly cinematic dimension

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I investigate the nature of noir subjectivity, and the degree to which it can be described as heroic. To investigate these issues, I have chosen to illustrate my argument by analysing my novel, Viper, and two films that renew the noir cycle at different socio-political crossroads in America: in 1958, Alfred Hitchcock???s late noir, Vertigo, and in 1974, Frances Ford Coppola???s neo-noir, The Conversation. Because these texts present an extreme theorisation of deception in terms of the assembling and erasure of subjective identity, they will serve as a basis to explore the question of noir subjectivity. In proceeding thus, I argue in the dissertation that film noir???s most innovative borrowing can be described as a monstrous stitching together of incompatible parts???the real and the imaginary, the past and the present, the living and the dead???which accounts for a cut both between, and within, the image. It is this prosthetic approach to representation that takes the noir mode beyond its existential, individualist limits, and accounts for the subjective wound in noir: the heroic conflict between the singular and the multiple. In my analytic procedure then, I extend the idea of monstrosity beyond its current boundaries in contemporary theory. I do this by fusing Marie H??l??ne Huet???s conception of the monstrous imagination, which is a theory of art, with Gilles Deleuze???s powers of the false, which belongs to a philosophy of time. I posit a dialogic exchange across these analyses and my novel to suggest that the cinematic cut not only accounts for what Deleuze has termed the time-image but also is symptomatic of the chronic wounding of the riven noir hero. These analyses suggest that, while sustaining the aura of authorship through technical innovation and stylistic mastery, film noir serves paradoxically to challenge the mastery of the model designated as masculine. In my novel I continue to deal with the issues raised in the dissertation, through a rearticulation of a subjectivity that irrevocably alters its relation to representation in its affinity with the image, its serial movement through interstitial space, and its novel powers of falsification.

Abstract:
Wim Wenders, with “Wrong Move”, James Gray, with “Two Lovers”, Alexander Sokurov, with “Faust”, Francis Ford Coppola, with “Twixt”, and Sylvie Verheyde, with “Confession of a Child of the Century”, have given a unique place to the romantic material. Through the practice of the film adaptation, these five filmmakers have engaged a dialogue between two aesthetic movements, romanticism and the postmodern aesthetic. Through this encounter, they have questioned an aesthetic of the surface in terms of an aesthetic of interiority, and they have mobilized romantic characters confronted to historical and aesthetical singular contexts. Even though these neoromantic expressions are formed into various geographic areas, they share lines, highlighting a cinematographic neoromanticism. Lastly, the treatment, sometimes very open, of the original literary material questions the concept of film adaptation. By the multiple sources mobilized and the necessarily individual filmmaker’s interpretation, the concepts of adaptation and fidelity fade in favor of the concept of “recreation”

Abstract:
Farhadi’s The Salesman, which won the Best Screenplay award at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and the Best Foreign Language Film in the 89th Academy Awards, got universal acclaim and behooved for academic debates. The intertextual references in The Salesman optimized with the film’s explicit references to Arthur Miller’s drama play, The Death of a Salesman. However, the director, Asghar Farhadi, includes more subtle intertextual references to attract the audience to some masterpieces of art. This study introduces referenced sources to emphasize parallels between Farhadi’s film and other literary and artistic works to determine the central themes of the movie in order to evaluate the protagonist and antagonist’s actions thoroughly and accurately. Out of The Death of a Salesman, the film establishes intertextual relations with plays such as Hamlet by Shakespeare and Out at Sea by Slawomir Mrozek, “The Cow” —a short story—by Gholam-Hossein Saedi, Gilemard—a novel—by Bozorg Alavi, and movies such as Shame by Ingmar Bergman and The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola. These intertextual relations are the film’s central conflict that should be evaluated in the realm of the challenge between tradition and modernity. In addition, of course, various manifestations of such resistance are reflected in the facedown between the past and the future.

This work presents an overall review of the “Racine operation” which started in 1963 as a touristic project of the French Government for the economic development in the South coast. It was in charge of the Délégation à l’aménagement du territoire et à l’action régionale (DATAR). In order to assert Architecture, Urbanism and Landscaping as elemental instruments in the tourist development in the French coast, we will deepen into de analysis of the original documents, since the published critics and the evaluation of the Languedoc-Roussillon project received, along with its known influence in the tourist world are being forgotten. We will, as well, point some considerations for the future.

This paper presents the results of modelling of the complete three-dimensional fluid flow through the spiral casing, stay vanes, guide vanes, and then through the Francis turbine runner to the draft tube of the Derbendikhan power station. To investigate the flow in the Francis turbine and also to compute stress distribution in the runner blades, a three-dimensional model was prepared according to specifications provided. The two topics discussed in this study are: (i) the simulation of the 3D fluid flow through the inter blade channels for the Francis turbine runner by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and, (ii) the simulation of the stress analysis of the turbine runner by using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). In this study, the water pressure obtained from the CFD analysis for different boundary conditions are incorporated into a Finite Element model to calculate stress distributions in the runner.

Abstract:
In this study, new design concepts were structured by DOE based on internal flow evaluation by CFD to realize the efficiency improvement, reliability improvement and cost reduction of a medium or small capacity hydro turbine. As a part of new concepts, shroudless type and shroud liner type runner shape were adopted. In shroud liner type, shroud line of meridional plane shape inclines at 45 degrees to rotational axis. By adopting shroud less type, runner can be made not by casting but by cutting work. For medium or small hydroelectric power plant, cost reduction is strongly required in comparison with larger scale hydro one. By adopting shroud liner type, efficiency was improved because of mitigating secondary flow. In addition, to improve reliability, shroud partial band was bonded at inlet of runner. This plays a role to prevent runner blade from breaking by tip rubbing. By using high-speed video camera and CFD analysis, it was clarified that runner outlet cavitation is caused by jet which is leakage in the tip clearance region and that leakage flow of outlet is larger than leakage flow of inlet. Moreover, by using the three-hole Pitot tube, the runner outlet flow distribution was measured and the validity of the design point was verified. Finally, by measurement of pressure on the wall of the stationary parts such as the guide vane, it was clarified that the total pressure loss of guide vane increases in stream-wise direction in low mass flow rate. In this report, the development of the shroudless Francis turbine based on the loss mechanism and flow investigation was described.

Abstract:
Hydroenergy is one of the most useful renewable energy sources. Hydropower is a vital source as it is clean, sustainable and cost effective. Francis type hydroturbines are applicable to a wide range of head and flow rate values. Spiral case, stay vane, guide vane, runner and draft tube are the basic components of a Francis turbine. In this paper, CFD based 3D numerical simulations of steady turbulent flow in a Francis turbine for an actual power plant, BUSKI HES in Turkey, is presented.

Abstract:
By using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, the complex unsteady vortical flow in the entire draft tube of a Francis turbine under a part-load condition, with severe low-frequency pressure fluctuation, is investigated numerically to gain an in-depth understanding of the physical characters of the flow including its stability and robustness, and thereby to seek effective control means to alleviate or even eliminate the strong pressure fluctuation. Our main findings are as follows: In the cone segment of the draft tube, the vortex rope is due to the global instability of the flow caused crucially by the reversed axial flow at the inlet. In the elbow segment of the draft tube, the reversed flow coexists side by side with a fluid channel that carries the mass flux downstream due to favorable axial pressure gradient. In the outlet segment of the draft tube, the mass-flux channel always goes through a fixed outlet, leaving the other two with nearly zero flux. The entire draft-tube flow, although undesired under part-load condition, forms a globally robust system. The principles for effectively controlling this complex flow are proposed. A simple water jet injection at the inlet is numerically proven successful.

Abstract:
This paper presents an automated tool chain for simulating Francis turbine behavior during the transient processes induced by a load rejection event. The proposed methodology combines a commercial CFD solver and a user function and scripts to address the simulation challenges caused by the wicket gate motion and runner speed variation during emergency shutdown. Mesh deformation and re-meshing techniques are used to simulate the large displacement of the wicket gates. The runner speed variation is computed using an angular momentum equation implemented in a user defined function. The proposed methodology was developed and validated by performing 2D unsteady simulations on a high head model Francis turbine used in the Francis-99 workshop, followed by a 3D unsteady simulations on a medium head Francis turbine. These simulations allow computing the evolution of engineering quantities such as turbine angular speed, flow physics and unsteady load on blades during the process. The validation of CFD results with experiments showed 9% discrepancy in the prediction of runaway speed. The investigation of flow physics reveals the presence of complex flow structures such as reversed flow (pumping flow) near the draft tube cone center and a downward tangential flow near the cone wall of the draft tube. Pressure fluctuations are captured when the Francis turbine operating point moves through conditions of zero and negative torque. The proposed methodology is fast and simple to present a qualitative analysis of the flow physics and the turbine behavior during load rejection.

Abstract:
The International Health Regulations (2005) are legally binding on 196 States Parties, Including all WHO Member States. The IHR aims to keep the world informed about public health risks, through committing all signatories to cooperate together in combating any future “illness or medical condition, irrespective of origin or source, that presents or could present significant harm to humans.” Under IHR, states agreed to strengthen their public health capacities and notify the WHO of any such illness in their populations. The WHO would be the centralized body for all countries facing a health threat, with the power to declare a “public health emergency of international concern,” issue recommendations, and work with countries to tackle a crisis. Although, with the sudden and rapid spread of COVID-19 in the world, many countries varied in implementing the WHO guidelines and health recommendations. While some countries followed the WHO guidelines, others imposed travel restrictions against the WHO’s recommendations. Some states refused to share their data with the organization. Others banned the export of medical equipment, even in the face of global shortages. The UN Compliance Research group will focus during the current cycle on analyzing the compliance of the WHO member states to the organizations guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.
