Abstract:
The most significant shift in the wartime and postwar history of the Hollywood producer was the rise of women. Joan Harrison and Virginia Van Upp are best known, but little has been written about the producing careers of Harriet Parsons, Helen Rathvon, Ruth Herbert, Frances Manson, Ginger and Lela Rogers, Constance Bennett, Joan Bennett, Helen Deutsch, Jane Murfin, Theresa Helburn, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Kay Francis, and Rita Hayworth. Together with Mary Pickford, longtime partner of United Artists Studios, and Ida Lupino, actress turned writer-director-producer, they formed a formidable contingent of women who sought to redefine and re-energize the creative role of the producer. Many of these women combined screenwriting, editing, acting, and producing duties. During the war years, two factors advanced women’s executive roles in Hollywood: women outnumbered men in the United States and public and cross-party support for the Equal Rights Amendment was at its peak.

Abstract:
With the German invasion of Belgium and France came economic chaos and the near total disruption of agriculture and the marketing of basic foodstuffs to the nearly 10 million residents now behind enemy lines. Herbert Hoover, a young mining executive, was tapped by the American ambassador to Britain to lead an American effort to establish, as a matter of highest urgency, a system to feed these people—otherwise threatened with starvation—until the war was ended. This chapter relates how he succeeded in what was widely believed to be an impossible task. When the United States entered the war in 1917, Hoover’s difficulties only multiplied. Now he had to convince the American people to consume far less, so that there might be food enough to keep the populations of the allied states from starvation.

Abstract:
In 1811, Bell had printed privately a monograph titled Idea of a New Anatomy of the Brain. In it, Bell correctly showed that the anterior but not the posterior roots had motor functions. François Magendie subsequently showed that the anterior roots were motor, and the posterior roots were sensory. This led to a dispute about priority during which Bell republished some of his early work with textual alterations to support his claims. Bell was involved in a similar dispute with Herbert Mayo concerning the separate functions of the fifth (sensory) and seventh (motor) cranial nerves, and Mayo today is a forgotten man. In both instances, Bell deserves credit for the concepts and initial experimental approach, and Magendie and Mayo deserve credit for obtaining and correctly interpreting the definitive experimental findings.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 engages Donne’s religious poetry. It reconsiders the authorship of “Psalm 137,” the only poem to appear in all seven seventeenth-century printed collections of his verse that is excluded from his current canon. Alexander B. Grosart attributed this scriptural verse translation to Francis Davison in 1872, based largely on style, and subsequent editors have followed his lead. This study reveals that material evidence points overwhelmingly toward Donne’s authorship, with only one scribe claiming Davison. The chapter also identifies topical, thematic, and verbal connections between this psalm translation and “Lamentations,” the one scriptural translation universally accepted as a Donne poem, as well as an echo of this particular “Psalm 137” in George Herbert’s “Denial.” Recognizing “Psalm 137” as a part of Donne’s canon alters our understanding of him as a verse translator in relation to his other divine poetry and prose.

Priego, Natalia. Positivism, Science and 'The Scientists' in Porfirian Mexico. Liverpool University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.5949/liverpool/9781781382561.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book is intended for not only students and academics who undertake research on the history of Mexico during the half-century prior to the onset in 1910 of the Mexican Revolution, but also the parallel community of specialists on the history of ideas, philosophy and science throughout Latin America in this period. Its principal focus is to revisit the influential thesis of the Mexican philosopher Leopoldo Zea that the ideological group dubbed ‘the scientists’ by their opponents were guided by Positivism, particularly as interpreted by Herbert Spencer. It begins by reviewing previous research upon the formation and differentiation of ‘the scientists’, and the black legend which assumes that they legitimised the long dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz. Having established what Spencer himself believed and wrote, it analyses the prolific writings of two of the leading ‘scientists’, Francisco Bulnes and Justo Sierra. It explains the eclectic nature of their discourses, derived from the works of not only Spencer but also Charles Darwin, Auguste Comte and other European writers, which reached Mexico in a fragmented fashion. It concludes that, far from forming a homogeneous elite clearly committed to to a conservative insistence, derived from Spencerian Positivism, on political stability and modernisation, ‘the scientists’ had an ambivalent relationship with Díaz.
