Full textFrancis Ponge's "new rhetoric"(or "non-euclidean" rhetoric) corresponds to the array of new principles regulating poetic writing as practiced by the author : text-object, contradictory variety, incompleteness. This study considers this rhetorical corpus in itss own complexity rather than exclusively for its new lessons of poetics. ] This didactic metadiscourse is also a discourse. A man, or rather, a subject, is offered for consideration. The variable image of a public shapes the very form of his reflexive words. Thus takes shape a poetics of the rhetorical text that one suspects to be new in relation to a tradition inherited from Greco-Roman Antiquity. For the author finds criticism and creativity to be indistinguishable. This reflexive discourse is thus liable to be affected by the esthetically innovative agenda he is theorizing. For if Ponge continues to subscribe, more or less, to the taxonomic and authoritarian ambition inherited from Cicero and Horace, the amateur's uncertainties, the orator's vocal outbursts, the way the admirer of the Roman juste milieu takes charge, turn it into an ever-surprising literary metadiscourse

Full textThis dissertation aims at allowing the access to a little known portion of Francis Ponges works by means of the translation of fifteen selected texts, extracted from his anthology of unedited works and manuscripts titled Pages dAtelier 1917-1982, written in different formats and periods, that are here organized around four central themes: Reflections on literature, Poetic self-reflections, Textual objects and On Surrealism. Considering the intended approach, we seek to present the main characteristics of the french writers work, namely, language issues, the materiality of the words and the absence of form, as well as contextualizing his work, discussing its influences and bringing some of the dialogues established in his texts with french writers and philosophers. In addition also, this work brings a debate about the translation and the anthology as places of rewriting, something that is important when we think about Ponges reception in Brazil. Because it is a commented translation, we bring as well a discussion on the possible types of notes in this kind of practice.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to examine the aesthetics and the ethics of Francis Ponge’s poetry through the notion of Nature. The first part examines the concept of Nature in Ponge as the outside world and his materialism which, heavily influenced by ancient materialism, is characterized by the anti-metaphysical. This part also explore the close relationship between his idea and Spinoza’s immanent idea, summarized in the expression of "God, or Nature". The immanent aspects of things in his work can be fully understood with the help of the concept of "immanence" of Spinoza. The second part examines the relationship between Nature and literature and the development of Ponge’s new materialist lyricism. For him, literature becomes naturalized and nature becomes literarized. The approval of nature is reflected in his countersignature for things. His new materialist lyricism, contrasted with the traditional lyricism, is characterized by notions such as vibration, aspiration, "réson". The third part will focus on the new humanism and the ethics of Ponge. The relationship between Nature and man will be treated primarily on certain essential themes of ethics such as otherness, the new humanism and the salvation of man. His ethics is to live à happy life. Various topics, such as ancient wisdom, the harmony of the "non-self" and the "self", the ethics of joy, chance and freedom, will be discussed

Full textReplaced in its original context, L Ecrit Beaubourg, the word “movement” appears to be a symbol of Ponge’s poetical practice. ln one only word it associates two fundamental elements: a play with the divergence and association of various things, and the materialism of the expression mode. On the basis of the paradoxical praise, these characteristics allow the making of a textual synthesis of contradictory elements, in particular of time and space, of the abstract and the concrete. Added to this intellectual vitality, the texts evolve in their composition like an organic body, as fragmentary constituents of Ponge’s work. ln his writings on art, he carries out also the paradoxical praise in accordance with his approach of plastic arts which convert temporal subjective emotions into substantial communicable materials. lt is precisely in his ‘poemes de circonstance’ (occasional poems) that his most contradictory poetics appear: that of concrete concise abstraction and that of monumentality in movement. ln between the thickness of the words and the flat surface of the pages, Ponge makes use of them particularly in his poetic diaries: La Fabrique du pré and La Table. Suggesting the musical form “moment”, and the parallelepiped spatial form by the segment “ment”, “movement” embodies the three-dimensional poetry, which keeps, as the Pompidou Center, the collective memory of words, revitalizing it constantly through the encouragement to practical applications of language

Full textA close reading of Ponge's oeuvre allows one to grasp a sense of a kind of mobile breaking-up of reality - which reflects contemporary art and thought - that he is at once exhibiting for us to see and "repairing". If the mirror shattered into moving splinters is indeed re- presented in the fragmentalisation of subject, image and signifier, it does not escape one that it constantly comes together again to produce an object which is the formal and dynamic equivalent of its referent and, like this referent itself, has several dimensions. This process comes about through the dialectical movement which leads, by means of a system of opposition and complementarity, to a very tight linking-up of all its logical and formal levels. In this way the falsely anarchic metamorphoses of the various linguistic elements (into the text) participate in the genetic metamorphosis (of the text, made as one with its own becoming). Such a phenomenon calls into play the inseparable fate of the writing subject and the object through three modalities: referent, text and desire - the last-named proving to be "poetics" in its infinite temporality

Abstract: This thesis starts from a historical sketch of the inter-relation between painting and writing outlined by Horatio?s expression ut pictura poesis. Its main goal is to study Francis Ponge?s texts on Art because this French poet had a life-long relationship with plastic artists, witnessed in his work. Our intention is to present Ponge?s textual resources which reveal pictorial marks in the lexical domain (words and expressions), in the orthographical domain (typographic choices), in the onomastic domain (pictures? titles, artists names), as well as in the writing techniques used. To sum up, how the Plastic Arts are worked out by his pencil. Our hypothesis is centered in the idea that Ponge sees himself as a painter. In the idea that he tries to observe and apprehend the world as a painter before the texts he writes. From his palette of words all Nature?s details come out. To show how this in-the-place-of-a-painter takes place in Ponge, we show similarities of sight and in the way the work is done in several themes shared by the artists and Ponge. La Mounine is an exquisite example of this, which stands for a mimesis of an impressionist work, given the lexical choices and the way the author observes the landscape. All the analyses presented reveal that Ponge is more than an eyewitness in the Arts? world; he is a plastic artist who became a writer

Full textAbout the relation in ponge between knowledge and creation, it appears that the renovation of the world organized by the literary work, rather than proceeding from a "new representation of the real", seems to be accomplished through a perpetually open apprehension of the object, both sensitive and verbal, so that the experience of things becomes one with their resistance to expression, a resistance which is actually deliberately aggravated with the writer by his choosing problematic objects, that is to say, strangest and most irreducible to immediate knowledge. This integration of knowledge with creation thus makes of the poetic text the place of an essential and ontological experience of speech, the originality of which is to revive the best ambition of philosophy without in the least renouncing the requirements of a concrete apprehension of the world according to conditions entirely expressive of the mind and sensitiveness of the contemporary man. It is in this respect that a new form of humanism can be truly spoken of, since, through the text, the reader experiences a restored resistance of things, hence, a new apprehension of the world and of himself
