ABSTRACT: The spiritual journey of Father Paul James Francis was marked by faith, courage, and determination. Born Lewis Thomas Wattson, he became an Episcopal priest. He served as rector of a parish in Kingston, New York and Superior of the Associate Mission in Omaha, Nebraska, before returning to New York to found the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in 1898. Father Paul, as he was and is known historically, always held a "high church" theological perspective. Gradually, over an approximate ten-year period he made the transition and in October 1909 was, along with his community, corporatel

This article presents the evolution of the Franciscan order which took place in the years 1223–1228, i.e., in the period from the final approval of the Franciscan Rule to the canonization of Francis. This period is poorly described in the oldest Franciscan sources, but we believe that it is wrong to conclude that the generation of Friars Minor, contemporaries of Francis, wanted to hide something in the history of the Order, in particular the process of departing from the original Franciscan ideals and moving towards the clericalization of Friars Minor. The Franciscan chronicles stand out as sources for Brazilian historiography by preserving the memory of the Order of Friars Minor in the colonial context. Their narratives show aspects of the political, social and religious life of the friars, while they also contribute to fill the gaps left by the absence of documents in the archives of the Order in Brazil. This work focuses on the descriptions made by the chroniclers about the devotional images found in the Brazilian territory between the 16th and 17th centuries, with emphasis on the news that described miracles attributed to the sculptures.

Using the example of the Bohemian Franciscan Province, and its Olomouc convent in particular, this paper analyses mendicancy after the Reformation. In the early modern period mendicancy remained an important practice in the Franciscan Order. Apart from its economic function, begging was also an important means of interaction between the friars and the people. It was a complicated exchange of goods and services, which helped the friars to secure their position in society and export elements of their spirituality outside the walls of their convents.

A popular perception persists that the Franciscan friars of Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing bear heavy blame for the results of the play, adversely for Friar Lawrence and positively for Friar Francis. The friars do formulate similar plans, but their roles vary significantly. I contrast their approaches using Michel Foucault's definition of pastoral power, with Friar Lawrence as an overly manipulative friar controlling the lovers in spiritual matters, and Friar Francis as a humble military friar returning from the Wars of Religion to share his authority with others. It also examines how the presence of the friars affected the city. By the thirteenth century, the populated centers of northern Italy were fertile grounds for heretical movements, religious skepticism, and anti-clerical attitudes. The mendicant orders developed as a response to the crisis of the medieval church in the city and provided a new concept of the religious vocation, one committed to voluntary poverty and the con

The ideal is studied through the regulations that determined what manuscripts should aim for. Space refers to the development and role of Franciscan libraries. The form is revealed by the assessment of the physical configuration of a set of representative manuscripts read, written, and manufactured by the friars.
