Abstract:
Given the priceless value of library materials in the Franciscan Monastery’s Library in Osijek, and the inadequate conditions in which they are kept, it is necessary to indicate the need to digitise these materials. As founders of the monastery, the Franciscans have played an important role in the cultural and educational life of the city ever since the expulsion of the Turks, when they came along with the army and received the funds to erect a monastery from the Austro-Hungarian Emperor in 1697. The monastery itself was completed in 1733 and the Franciscans have supplemented it with a library, collecting invaluable books over time. As a cultural centre of eastern Slavonia and the broader region, the City of Osijek and its inhabitants, students, and the academia need a more modern and better-quality access to that library.

The article summarises new findings and complements earlier studies concerning the history of the library of the Franciscan monastery of Our Lady of the Snows in the New Town of Prague. Its first part deals with the maker of rococo bookcases from 1764, the second part summarises previously unused information on the library rules created by the Franciscan provincial Bernard Sannig in 1685, and the third part reports on the rediscovered copy of a Czech printed book from the 16th century, which was, together with other books, donated to the Franciscans of Prague by Jan Sferýn of Sferýn, a New Town burgher, and which was stolen from the library at Our Lady of the Snows in the first half of the 19th century.

Abstract:
The author discusses the architecture of the church and the monastery of St Francis in Zadar in their original form, and their transformation during the Gothic and Renaissance periods. Based on an analysis of published historical sources and the preserved architectural elements, it has been concluded that the extant structure of the complex emerged between the mid-13th and the early 14th century, when the church and the sacristy were built, as well as the monastery wings and the original cloister. An important typological feature of the church is its three-apse rear structure, which the author brings into connection with the Gothic architecture of Franciscans and Dominicans from Umbria and Veneto during the 13th century. The sacristy, in which the Peace of Zadar was signed in 1358, was also a chapel of St Louis and the chapter hall. Its significant rearrangement, with the furnishing of the choir and the sanctuary, took place at the end of the 14th century, when the General Chapter in Cologne proclaimed the monastery the seat of the Franciscan province of St Jerome for Dalmatia in 1393. The choir rebuilding was completed by the mid-15th century with the construction of Giorgio da Sebenico’s podium on the site of the presumed earlier railing.

Abstract:
The monastery of the Conventual Franciscans at Šibenik houses a valuable collection of incunables among which the illuminated examples deserve particular attention. The incunable of John Duns Scotus’ Scriptum in quattuor libros Sententiarum Petri Lombardi (Johannes de Colonia et Johannes Manthen, Venice, 1477) is decorated with high-quality figural and phytomorphic illuminations displaying marked similarities with the works of Giovanni Vendramin, a Renaissance miniaturist from Padua. The edition of Caesar’s Commentariorvm de bello Gallico (Milan, Antonius Zarotus, 1477) features decorative frames with white vine stalks (bianchi girari). This type of the decorative frame was frequently used by Giovanni Vendramin and the examples from Šibenik are closely related to some of his works, especially those made for the Bishop of Padua Jacopo Zeno.

Abstract:
The article analyses a silver altarpiece in Kotor Cathedral which was made in the repoussé technique in the mid-fifteenth century. The figure of St. Tryphon (fig. 11) is the only saint which had been preserved from an earlier, fourteenth century altarpiece. Two figures (Christ and St. Peter; fig. 2, 3) were made by master John of Basel, active in Kotor until 1440 when he moved to nearby Dubrovnik where he was commissioned, by the Franciscans, with a silver crucifix, still preserved. The figures of three saints (fig. 6, 8), in the right part of the middle row (fig. 5), distinguish themselves from the others with their visual quality and are the work of a master who trained in a more developed artistic centre. A more numerous group of figures, the author of the article attributes to a local goldsmith called Marin Adamov (fig. 5, 9, 10). His work on the altarpiece is directly testified with a document dated in 1445. Finally, the altar piece was dismantled and re-assembled in the seventeenth century when the Venetian master goldsmithVenturin added the figures (of a mediocre quality) of St. Francis and St. Jerome (fig. 13). The author of the paper proposes a reconstruction of the original appearance of the altarpiece in the mid-fifteenth century. Accordingly, saints’ figures were arranged in two rows, with Christ figure in the centre of the upper row. The lower centre figure was St. Tryphon, flanked by St. Marc the Evangelist and St. Simeon the Righteous whose Kotor feast coincides with that of St. Tryphon.

Abstract:
The author of the present paper analyzes texts created from early 18thcentury to 1855, when Ignjat Alojzije Brlić passed away and when his Novouređeni ilirski kalendar or Svetodanik ceased to be published. The above works make up the corpus of so-called Slavonian literature that was, territorially speaking, created in the area encompassed by the Province of St. Ivan Kapistran. The authors were mainly church people (Jesuits, Franciscans), while the genealogical image of 18th century Slavonian literature is mainly made up of works of Enlightenment orientation (M. A. Relković, Satir or divji čovik, 1762; Đ. Rapić, Satir obraćen, 1765; V. Došen, Jeka planine, 1767; A. T. Blagojević, Pjesnik-putnik, 1771; J. S. Relković, Kućnik, 1769; etc.), as well as those of Baroque and Rococo (A. Kanižlić, Sveta Rožalija, 1780; A. Ivanošić, Opivanje sličnorično groba Josipa Antuna Ćolnića od Ćolke, 1786), and classicist orientation (M. P. Katančić, Fructus auctumnales, 1791), along with war chronicles in verse, as well as religious books, defined by N. Andrić as catholic truths (catechisms), divine ways (prayer books), mirrors of truth(various genres of moral-instructive prose), etc.

Abstract:
In 1932, six Missionary Franciscan Friars from Bavaria came to South Africa at the invitation of Bishop Adalbero Michael Fleischer (1874-1963), a Mariannhill missionary in Natal. His vision was that they would establish a “Franciscan Family” there. Despite this invitation, the Friars were not welcomed by the Mariannhill community and went on to found the Mount Currie Prefecture (Diocese of Kokstad) in 1935. There the Franciscans became involved in the life of the ordinary people, who were otherwise abandoned by the government. Among other activities, they provided schools and gardens, and embarked on skills development projects for the youth. The Holy Cross Sisters - whose arrival in 1926 pre-dated that of the Friars - played a crucial role in these developments. From 1952, their educational work would be supplemented by the medical work of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary Sisters. The arrival of Irish Franciscans (1946) and English Franciscans (1948) brought tensions and differing interpretations of the form that the vision should take. In addition, the Friars were men of their times and products of their particular backgrounds. For example, while some saw their African converts as equals, others were prejudiced against them. However, this thesis – the work of an “insider” to the faith and to the Order, argues that despite tensions and shortcomings, the settlement, and continuing presence, of the Franciscan Friars and Sisters in the Eastern Cape was an eventual realization of Bishop Fleischer’s vision, even though in a slightly different manner from the original ideal. In the early nineteen sixties a new and powerful spirit invaded the Catholic Church. The Second Vatican Council took place from 1962 to 1965. It may be argued that, from that time onward, the Church has never been the same again. In accordance with this call and invitation of the Second Vatican Council for quite some time it has been my earnest desire to get down into a more in-depth study of the history of the Franciscans in South Africa than that provided by the two existing works on this topic. It is my hope that this thesis will contribute to a soul-searching of the Franciscans as they continue to live and minister to the people of South Africa. This history will hopefully teach us to learn from and be inspired by the great and heroic deeds of our spiritual forebears – our Franciscan brothers and sisters – and also teach us to learn from their mistakes.

Christie, Heather Alison. "'The Meek Shall Inherit The Earth' - Vocations of humility in the early Franciscan Order." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/20733.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, Francis of Assisi's vocation of humility is given its unique place in the heritage of Christian humility, and situated in relation to the early Franciscan vocation of humility that followed and the Bonaventurian vocation of humility that then concluded the infancy of First Order Franciscan development. Francis's vocation of humility was constituted by a unique blend of subjection, self-sacrifice, inversion, and freedom from worldly constraints. The characteristics that these elements gave rise to included: living the Gospel and the Rule, seeking to be the Lesser Brother in every sense, loving and honouring all brothers equally, obedience, humility in deeds and words, and the exhibition of humility that could not be mistaken for lack of strength or determination. These elements and characteristics form a framework with which to analyse the subsequent early First Order vocation of humility and the vocation of humility under Bonaventure. Studying these three vocations highlights continuities and divergences in formation and complexion. Varying levels of reference to earlier ideas of Christian humility are detected, as are differing approaches to challenges posed by the temporal and ecclesiastical spheres. Of particular interest are diverse responses to four points of contention that have preoccupied other contributors to the heritage of Christian humility: the optimal exemplars for the pursuit of the relational, action-based life required by internal humility; humility as abrogation of power versus humility as a source of power; spiritual advancement through grace versus the possibility of attaining it to some degree through merit; and the extent and level of involvement in the temporal world compatible with Christian humility. The responses of Francis, the early First Order, and Bonaventure to these points of contention differentiate them from each other, and their theological ancestors, and provide a fresh perspective on early Franciscan Order history.

Abstract:
THE SULTAN AS VIS MAJOR – PERCEPTIONS OF THE OTTOMAN AUTHORITIES IN THE MONASTERY CHRONICLES OF BOSNIAN FRANCISCANS FROM THE 18TH CENTURY The paper attempts to reconstruct the genesis of the narrative about the Other in 18th century Bosnia, using the example of the monastery chronicles of three Bosnian Franciscans, Nikola Lašvanin, Bono Benić, and Marijan Bogdanović. Since the Franciscans were members of the ecclesiastical and intellectual elite among the Catholic population in Bosnia at the time, and since the chronicles were written for internal monastery use (therefore, they were less censored), the imagotypical statements in them reflect a Eurocentric view of the Others, with a particular focus on the representatives of the Ottoman government in Bosnia. In the analyzed Franciscan annals, there is an identification of the one who observes/writes with a historically determined subject, because the author is not some external consciousness, but places himself within the historical sequence, shapes the story and – takes a side. The oppositions between “we” and “them” are explicitly present; order (mostly) comes from the Franciscan order, and dis-order and the threat to that order come from outside, from the Other, who is also clearly identified. The narrative subject of the Franciscan chronicles is directly affected by the current relation of power and power (lessness), which is the result of the historical moment and the socio-political context, which also determines the image of the Other. The Bosnian Franciscans’ monastery chronicles are a confirmation of their specific role throughout history, and historicity, on the other hand, is a confirmation of the “self”, which is shaped in opposition to the Other and in relation to the Other. Keywords: Bosnian Franciscans, Franciscan literature, chronicles, imagology, ideas, axiological attributions, the Other and otherness

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The Coast Range ophiolite (CRO), along with the overlying Great Valley Group sediments and underlying Franciscan complex, form a classic convergent margin assemblage comprising forearc basin crust (CRO) and sedimentary fill (Great Valley Group), underlain by a subduction zone accretionary complex (Franciscan assemblage). The CRO near Stonyford, California, USA, is by a unique forearc volcano underpinned by serpentine mélange and by upper mantle peridotites, which may represent the refractory residue of melting that formed the volcanic complex. This locality allows us to reconstruct a detailed history of its formation and evolution using geochemistry and 39Ar-40Ar dating of the volcanic rocks, U-Pb dating of plutonic diorites associated with the volcanic complex, whole rock and mineral chemistry of the mantle peridotites, and biostratigraphic dating of chert intercalated with the volcanic rocks. This guide summarizes the geologic, age, and geochemical relations of the CRO and adjacent rocks near Stonyford, and provides locations that illustrate these relationships in the field.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The Franciscan Complex of California, the type example of an exhumed accretionary complex, records a protracted history of voluminous subduction accretion along the western margin of North America. Recent geochronological work has improved our knowledge of the timing of accretion, but the details of the accretionary history are disputed, in part, due to uncertainties in regional-scale correlations of different units. We present new detrital zircon U-Pb ages from two sites on opposite sides of San Francisco Bay in central California that confirm previously proposed correlations. Both sites are characterized by a structurally higher blueschist-facies unit (Angel Island unit) underlain by a prehnite-pumpellyite-facies unit (Alcatraz unit). The Angel Island unit yields maximum depositional ages (MDAs) ranging from 112 ± 1 Ma to 114 ± 1 Ma (±2σ), and the Alcatraz unit yields MDAs between 94 ± 2 Ma and 99 ± 1 Ma. Restoration of post-subduction dextral displacement suggests these sites were originally 44–78 km apart and much closer to other Franciscan units that are now exposed farther south in the Diablo Range. Comparison with detrital zircon dates from the Diablo Range supports correlations of the Bay Area units with certain units in the Diablo Range. In contrast, correlations with Franciscan units in the northern Coast Ranges of California are not robust: some units are clearly older than those in the Bay Area whereas others exhibit distinct differences in provenance. Integration of age data from throughout the Franciscan Complex indicates long-lived and episodic accretion from the Early Cretaceous to Paleogene. Although minor, sporadic accretion began earlier, significant accretion occurred during the interval 123–80 Ma and was followed by minor accretion at ca. 53–49 Ma. Periods of accretion and nonaccretion were associated with arc magmatism in the Sierra Nevada–Klamath region, cessation of arc activity, and reorganization of paleodrainage systems, which implicates plate dynamics and sediment availability as major controls on the development of the Franciscan Complex.

The paper considers the relations between art created on the territory of the Serbian medieval state and Italian painting from the end of the 13th and the first two decades of the 14th century in the context of contemporary historical events, as well as political and family ties between the Angevin, Nemanjić and Árpád dynasties. Representations of standardized forms of rare iconographic solutions appear in the monumental painting in the endowments of King Milutin (1282–1321), spread predominantly in the art at the territory of Serbia and Macedonia. The monumental Mother of God Pelagonitissa was shown in the church of the mon- astery in Staro Nagoričino, as well as Christ’s Ascent of the Cross in its trium- phant version, while the same scene, a different iconographic scheme empha- sizing the strong emotional charge, is preserved in the church of St. Nikita in Čučer. Moreover, a fairly unknown motif of the Mother of God kissing the Son in the cradle-sarcophagus was painted on the scene of the Birth of Christ in the Sts. Joachim and Anna Church (King's Church) in Studenica. Variations of these themes appeared in Italy in the same period, most often on small-size panels. These works, intended primarily for the Franciscans, were created in the centres where this monastic order maintained strong connections with the Guelfs, the Angevin dynasty and the popes. Thus, the interpretations of the Mother of God Pelagonitissa are found primarily in Romagna and Rimini, where Giovanni da Rimini presented this theme as the central part of the triptych, on whose side wing there was, among others, the scene of the Birth of Christ with the motif of the Mother kissing the Child. The triumphant version of Christ's ascent to the cross was painted in Tuscany and Siena, while the variation seen in the fresco in Santa Maria Donnaregina Vecchia in Naples is close to the fresco from Čučer. The significant role of the political and cultural mediator of the Serbian state was confirmed in the time of Milutin and his mother Jelena, whose relations with Angevins and Franciscans, widely present in the Balkans, are well known, simultaneously being in close contacts with popes, starting with Franciscan Pope Nicholas IV.
