Abstract:
In this article, I argue that François Jullien’s thought draws into question the exceptionalism that typically constitutes Western thought. Consider, for example, the thought of the event, which is a thought of the break, the rupture, of radical caesura—of the miracle, which Jullien (who is also a thinker of Christianity) frequently mentions. It is the thought of the subject, the author, the artist, the genius, the sovereign, and the creator. Such exceptionalism is political as well as aesthetic. It is philosophical—ontological and metaphysical—as well as theological. If Jullien, in all his work, operates within what he calls “the divergence” between nonessentialist notions of Western thought and Chinese thought, I argue that he thereby illuminates Western exceptionalism and shows how Chinese thought is unexceptional, so as to exploit the resources of both.

This article is about François Jullien and a controversy that arose over the publication of a pamphlet by Jean Franc¸ois Billeter entitled Against François Jullien, replied by Jullien in a volume subtitled Reply to *** (the asterisks standing for Billeter) and followed by collections of essays by French (and some German) intellectuals—one of them entitled For Jullien. The controversy assumed a weight that went beyond Jullien and the French debate to the heart of sinology and also of philosophy. The question, what and where China is philosophically speaking, is discussed with regard to the role of context, the notion of heterotopy, and the political side of talk about China.

Hadot y Foucault buscan referentes en las escuelas antiguas grecorromanas, mientras que François Jullien lo hace en la sabiduría tradicional china. Cette thèse a pour objectif essentiel de contribuer à l'exploration de la pensée de François Jullien en sinologie. Notre étude s'est concentrée sur sa théorie du détour dans l'application de deux grands domaines que sont le domaine temporel et moral (l'efficacité, les notions de création et de transformation, le temps, la morale) et le domaine poétique (l'esthétique et la langue). Ce que nous avons l'intention de montrer, à travers la pensée de François Jullien, c'est que la finalité sur laquelle reposent nos stratégies choisies est inévitablement influencée par une notion importante, soit l'axiologie comme présupposé, c'est une idée qui n'est pas suffisamment développée par François Jullien dans ses œuvres. afin d'élucider les rapports entre les phénomènes culturels et les valeurs, nous allons citer beaucoup d'exemples, soit historique, soit littéraire, soit social, afin de compléter la pensée de François Jullien ; deuxièmement, face à l'éloge de François Jullien envers la culture chinoise, nous pourrons la réexaminer par rapport à la culture occidentale, ce qui constitue un travail inverse par rapport à celui de Jullien ; troisièmement, les insuffisances de sa pensée sont également prise en compte, étant donné qu'elle s'articule autour des anciennes époques, c'est-à-dire autour de l'époque grecque et celle de la chine impériale, ce qui ne permet pas aux occidentaux de connaître la chine actuelle.

Le présent travail interroge l’œuvre de Goffredo Parise (Vicenza, 1929 – Treviso, 1986) à partir du primat qu’il accorde à la vue dans chacun de ses écrits. Une recherche des causes au fondement d’une telle poétique ainsi que des implications qui en découlent a ainsi été menée dans un cadre d’interprétation dépassant les frontières purement littéraires au profit d’instruments méthodologiques empruntés à la philosophie (Maurice Merleau-Ponty, en ce qui concerne les liens avec la phénoménologie, et François Jullien, pour ce qui est du rapport à l’Orient), à l’anthropologie visuelle et à la critique d’art (Georges Didi-Huberman). Cette étude s’est développée selon deux axes principaux : d’une part, l’analogie entre la réflexion philosophique et la poétique de l’auteur, qui a montré la validité d’une relecture de l’œuvre de Parise à travers le prisme du primat de la perception ; d’autre part, les affinités qu’entretient l’écriture de Parise avec la pratique picturale, qui ont, une fois de plus, prouvé à quel point la production de l’auteur ne peut être contenue dans des frontières strictement littéraires mais exige le recours continuel à des instruments interprétatifs issus d’autres champs de recherche
This research focuses on the work of Goffredo Parise (Vicenza, 1929 – Treviso, 1986) seen under the perspective of the primacy of the visual element, which can be traced in every text he has ever written. Drawing on Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology, François Jullien’s thinking and Georges Didi-Huberman’s visual anthropology, the thesis aims to trace the origins of Parise’s poetics and its relationships with philosophy and visual arts. The first strand of the research deals with the intersections between Parise’s work and the philosophy of perception, while the second one investigates the similarities between Parise’s poetics and painting. This leads to the conclusion that Parise’s work requires broader instruments of analysis than traditional literary critique

This practice-led project is the experimental re-interpretation of an extensive archive of soundscape recordings and original songs, and was developed in collaboration with the visual artist Leah King-Smith as the exhibition Mill Binna ("eye - ear", Bigambul). The theoretical basis of the project drew on concepts and terms associated with the Chinese literati landscape tradition articulated through the writings of François Jullien. This alignment of classical Chinese painting practices and soundscape methodologies enriches the field of understanding to which the soundscape may lay claim.

Die historischen Avantgardebewegungen haben mit dem Angriff auf die Autonomie der Kunst ein Erdbeben erzeugt, das sowohl die zeitgenössische Kunstpraxis als auch die ästhetische Theorie nachhaltig bewegt. Das Vermächtnis der historischen Avantgarden bleibt insofern als the Living Dead bestehen, als die Forderung, politisch wirksame Kunst zu schaffen, seit dem Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts immer wieder begraben und wiederbelebt wird. Auf der Ebene der Theorie pendeln diese Debatten zwischen der Konzeption einer autonomen Kunst einerseits und einer heteronomen Kunst andererseits, wobei Erstere einer philosophischen und Letztere einer soziologischen Kontextualisierung von Kunst entspricht. Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt diese beiden Perspektiven – einmal die ästhetische Theorie von Jacques Rancière und einmal die Gesellschaftstheorie von Niklas Luhmann – nebeneinander und zeigt, wie ein künstlerisches Schaffen – hier Marko Peljhans Projekt Makrolab – zugleich politisch wirksam und politisch unwirksam sein kann. Mit diesem Schritt wird die Diskussion über politische Kunst auf die Diskussion über die Wirksamkeit verschoben. Es wird festgestellt, dass die Frage nach politisch wirksamer Kunst nur im Rahmen einer kulturhistorisch spezifischen Vorstellung von Wirksamkeit möglich ist. Wird diese Vorstellung von Wirksamkeit durch eine andere ersetzt, verliert die Frage nach politischer Kunst ihren Sinn, es erschließt sich jedoch ein neues Verständnis des gesellschaftlichen Wandels, das weit über die Themen der Kunst hinausgeht.
By attacking the autonomy of the arts, the historical avant-gardes caused an upheaval which has resonated in the contemporary artistic practices as well as in art theory to this day. The legacy of the historical avant-gardes remains in the state of the living dead, since the demands to make political art have since the beginning of the 20th century repeatedly been buried and resuscitated. On the level of theory, these debates have been oscillating between the concept of an autonomous sphere of art on the one side and the heteronomous sphere of art on the other, whereas the former corresponds to a philosophical and the latter to a sociological contextualisation of the arts. This text combines both of these perspectives, putting Jacques Rancière’s philosophy of art and Niklas Luhmann’s social theory side by side in order to show how a singular artwork – here Marko Peljhan’s project Makrolab – can be understood as politically efficient and not politically efficient at the same time. With this step the discussion about political art is shifted to a discussion about efficacy and brought to the conclusion that the question of political art is only possible within a frame of a culturally and historically specific conception of efficacy. When this specific conception of efficacy is replaced by another, the question about political art loses its meaning. However, it is exactly at this point that a new understanding of social change opens up, which reaches far beyond the domain of art theory.

Rosalie Jullien (vers 1745-1824) est l'auteur d'une correspondance de 750 lettres environ entre 1775 et 1810 qui offre un intéressant exemple de l'esprit jacobin. La période de juillet 1794 à juin 1799 retenue pour l'édition et le commentaire se caractérise par une réflexion sur l'histoire. Epouse d'un député montagnard de la convention, Jullien de la Drôme, elle écrit en général à ses enfants, surtout à l'ainé, prénommé Marc-Antoine comme son père, qui se fait appeler Jullien de Paris. Il avait acquis quelque célébrité à dix-neuf ans comme agent du Comité de Salut Public et fut emprisonné apres thermidor. Pensée et sentiments reflètent une influence préponderante de Rousseau. Le désir d'unité qui marque son comportement familial se retrouve dans son attitude politique. Relatant les évènements qu'elle apprend dans le journal des hommes libres ou par son entourage jacobin, elle considère que l'histoire est une lutte entre le bien et le mal et juge sévèrement la France d'après thermidor. Elle ne peut trouver de réponse a ses interrogations répétées sur les dévoiements de la Terreur, l'unanimité etant peu compatible avec la tolérance. Elle est tentée par le mouvement babouviste qui veut restaurer les principes révolutionnaires mais effrayée par ses conceptions sur la propriété. La personnalité de Bonaparte suscite par ailleurs son enthousiasme ; mais elle redoute rapidement les dangers de son ambition
Rosalie Jullien (ca. 1745-1824) wrote around 750 letters between 1775 and 1810 which are an interesting testimonial of the jacobin mind. The period of july 1794 to june 1799 chosen for edition and commentary is characteristic of a reflexion on history. Wife of Jullien de la Drôme, a montagnard member of the national convention, she usually writes to her children, mainly to the first-born, christened Marc-Antoine like his father, he named himself "Jullien de Paris", gained some fame at nineteen as an agent of the Commity of Public Safety and was imprisoned after the thermidor coup. She is strongly influenced by Rousseau. A desire for unity marks her attitude towards her family as well as her political thinking. Relating the events she knows in the journal des hommes libres or by her jacobin circle, she looks upon history as a struggle between good an evil and judges severely the post-thermidorian France. She cannot find an answer to her frequent interrogations on mistakes during the Terror, unanimity beeing hardly compatible with tolerance. She is tempted by the babouvist movement which aims at the restoration of revolutionary principles, but scared by its attitude towards property. Bonaparte's personality strongly appeals to her, but she quickly fears the dangers of his ambition

Ce mémoire-création questionne le concept d'émergence en création. Il s'agit d'une recherche qualitative qui s'appuie sur le processus d'une pièce chorégraphique : CHAIR. Construit sur le principe du circuit-fermé (une caméra est intégrée à une poupée dont les images sont transmises en direct), ce solo s'est élaboré grâce à la perméabilité des pratiques et des matériaux. M'appuyant sur des concepts deleuziens (l'actuel et le virtuel, les zones d'indéterminations et le devenir notamment) et sur la philosophie chinoise (telle qu'étudiée par François Jullien) je mets en perspective la notion de décentralisation du créateur. Approfondissant les matériaux qui ont permis de construire CHAIR, je mets en perspective le fait que chaque matière contient ses propres singularités et que chacune de ses singularités fait émerger l'œuvre. Construit en deux volets, ce présent mémoire décrit tout d'abord le processus de création de manière chronologique. Et questionne ensuite, par l'entrecroisement des concepts, la notion d'émergence, qui va de pair avec la notion d'entre-deux. Cet entrecroisement de concept se fera sous la forme d'un dialogue entre les principaux théoriciens et moi-même. Sans apporter aucune réponse, j'entre dans une fente, je m'aventure dans l'inconnu afin de pousser une réflexion conceptuelle. Arendt’s humanist perspective, which is central to this study, is interrogated in this postscript in two ways. Firsty, it is contrasted with the ‘Chinese’ model of thought proposed by François Jullien in his Treatise of Efficacy, in order to account for the importance of Zen Buddhism for many precarious practices, and to analyse the contradictory drives articulated by each perspective. Another critique of humanism, levied by feminists and post-colonial discourses, inflect my remarks concerning the predominance of white, middle-class male artists in this book. The specific politics of precarious practices are outlined through reference to further debates concerning precarity and precariousness.

Hobbes and Rousseau placed fear at the joint between the state of nature and society, on the side of nature for Hobbes and society for Rousseau. Aristotle and Rousseau anticipated the problem of ungroundedness explored in twentieth-century thought. Since feelings and polity alike are ungrounded and since feelings are an essential dimension of politics, it falls to rhetoric to forge the link between them. The numerous pitfalls in specifying the affective dynamics of rhetoric in the political realm can be seen in the work of such influential theorists as Albert O. Hirschman, George Kateb, Brian Massumi, and Corey Robin. Moreover, political community itself is volatilized by questions of identity and belonging. The polis, as François Jullien emphasized, entails exclusions even as the principle of inclusion itself is ungrounded and contingent in the sense that the we of political community does not derive from reason or from nature. Unease, what Heidegger called Angst, is at the core of modern political experience. Peter Sloterdijk’s provocative approach to the modern polity’s collective energies and affects foregrounds rage and the symbolic, institutional, and discursive means by which the inchoate dissatisfactions of modern social life are stored, organized, and mobilized as political forces.
